  • I had to replace two of those tiny surface mount button switches. Apparently they're not too robust. Be gentle with your Icoms!

    Thanks for the tip Kevin! Had an old HT that served as the donor for the power switch!

    When I have to desolder a SMD component with two legs like that, I find it easier to just add a little extra shoulder and use the iron to heat up each leg quickly while applying gentle pressure from the side with tweezers to move it off the pads. Solder braid doesn't work with SMD parts. There's always a little solder left under the leads, as I'm sure you found out.

      Yep. Solder braid was not the way. I don't think my hands are steady enough to move the tip quickly from one side to the other though. But tweezers to pull upwards just a tiny bit might have worked a bit better. I'll keep that in mind for the next one.

      Kevin Loughin, heh I hear ya. You'd be surprised by how slow a big solder blob is to solidify ( when it's not silver solder ). I should have made that part more clear... Leaded solder is the key, good ole 60/40. There's also this product called Chip Quick, it's a special low melt temp alloy designed specifically for what you were doing there, for people without special SMD rework tools who only see themselves doing SMD work once in a blue moon.

      Two soldering irons work well in a pinch. But the blob of solder works well also.

  • @hectorpascal
    @hectorpascal 5 лет назад

    Yep, I always use 2 temperature controlled irons with conical bits, for ANY 2 lead smd removal. Then, not to lose it (!), I just flick the component into a small wooden container on the bench. If you can't afford another iron, you can wrap thick bare copper wire around any tip with parallel sides, cut the free ends the same length, and space them the width of the smd solder tabs. Tinning the ends with a small amount of solder before use also helps.

    Very interesting. Never worked on surface mount stuff. Need a steady hand. Tks for sharing this fix.

    I used to work at a company that produced boards for other companies. What I would do with SMDs like the switch is to use two irons and use them kind of like really awkward chopsticks (one in each hand).

    One thing I have learned from your videos is WHO TO SEND the radio to to get repaired. :-)
    I would use a hat pin (L O N G needle) or your razor knife to move the switch around to orient it properly.

      Sorry, but no, I don't know of a source. You might look at the specs of it and hunt around on digikey, mouser, and others for something similar.

      I can't remember that one. Most will have a hidden screw under the rubber grip ring on the knob.

    • @loughkb

      As I recall, there's a grub screw hidden under the rubber grip ring. The rubber slides off the metal knob.

    Do they still make these babies?

    • @warplanner8852
      @warplanner8852 6 лет назад

      Sam Iam, they do not. The IC-706 MKII was replaced by the MKIIg which in turn was replaced by the IC-7000. The MKIIg is a superior radio in my opinion. If you can find a decent one at a price that does not include any "nostalgia factor" (cf., Kenwood TS-830s). and is in decent shape, by all means pick it up.

    Why would you give an expensive radio to someone else to pack the mind boggles,
