    Bought a radio for $20 just of the fun of fixing it. On inspection there is a very fine pitch connector loose and this will push me to the limits of fixing SMD. I tell a story and get the number wrong. The ICOM I got in trade was an ICOM W2A

    Not sure what was more impressive, your soldering skills or bartering skills. Enjoyed the video and story, as usual, thanks! Marry Christmas!

    Not a "banana jack" antenna connector. It's "BNC." :)

      That made my laugh out loud. It's funny how our brains make a disconnect like that.

      I had banana jacks on my brain. I had ordered some dual plugs from eBay and when they arrived they were shorting plugs! the seller had no idea and refunded me and now I have 5 shorting plugs to find uses for

    I think maybe you mean the Icom IC-32---that's the big one. The IC-W32 is later and the same size and style as that T7 (I've had all three of those at various times). I still have my 32AT---itll never die! 😁 Super unexpected to see that ribbon connector ripped off. When I saw that I thought "oh he'll just trash it after seeing that" but you knocked it out of the park by actually tackling and putting it back on---Bravo! 73s and have a very blessed Christmas. 😄

      @@IMSAIGuy Ah yes, still have that one as well lol. A little weird to operate but a great radio---IIRC it has a keypad mod that lets it RX 25MHz-1GHz (with questionable performance at some ranges).

    JB Weld? Banana-Neil Connector? OK, I'll stop being a smartass! Goodonya for fixing that connector. My eyesight has gotten so poor with age, I have a helluva time soldering. I bought an 8000 lumen 4 panel LED retina scorcher and hung it over the workbench. Maybe now I can see to solder. My buddy asked me if I could still see after looking at the light. I told him, "sure, lotsa spots, for a long time." Capacitors for the Icom 245, and RF output module for the Alinco have arrived. Now its just a matter of psyching myself up to begin the repairs. I'm dreading the PLL unit on the Icom. Merry Christmas and Hippy New Year!

      8000 is a lot of lumens. put some JB on them if you need to lower the output 😎

    My first thought was, "wonder what the previous owner was trying to repair when he managed to tear that connector off the board?"

    • @IMSAIGuy
      @IMSAIGuy  2 года назад

      the squelch is non-functional, I haven't looked at that yet. but, yes the previous guy screwed the pooch.

      @@IMSAIGuy Hey, it could be worse: You could own a repair shop, and the guy who brought the radio in would demand you do the repair for cheap because he already got it half fixed for you.

      Hi IMSAIGUY, Putting in repeater frequencies in my Icom T7H I somehow made my PTT switch when I press it, say OFF. And that's only on that one frequency. And I have tried everything to turn it back on. I must have pushed two buttons at once somehow. Any suggestions? kc0hlx 73

    Good Fix ! If the connector was pooched I might of tried just soldering the end of the ribbon directly to the contacts and staking if with some kind of adhesive. I figure the radio is past it's half life anyway . Merry Christmas and 73's

  • @lmamakos
    @lmamakos 2 года назад

    wow, so lucky none of the PCB traces got torn off the board when that connector became "dislodged". I can only imagine that happened while the radio was disassembled for some other reason. Maybe this is one of the applications where those "knife" shaped soldering iron tips could come in handy, try to try tack down that connected. As tight as that is, and with those SMD parts right next to the connector, it'd be tough to try to use a hot air rework tool to get in there..

    I noticed that someone had been in there before you. There were a couple of burnt places to the left... one on the case and another on a part. It looks like someone else attempted a repair.
    I heard the Lake Tahoe NOAA station. You're just over the hill from me.

      I had to use the microscope to do the repair. I do not have a trinocular setup so cannot film it.
