You saw Randy live 3 times?!!! You fortunate rascal. Lovely guitar. Does it play well? So all of that aging was done to match his guitar? I'm surprised they have not done another run of these. It would suck today from what I've read on the internet about the quality of Gibson's guitars. Thanks for uploading, I was never aware or didn't remember them issuing these. The guys that made these guitars aren't even around at Gibson anymore I'd say. Hard to believe he would be 60+ years old now. Forever young. I would really love to have heard a 3rd Ozzy album but even more so, some of his classical music that he would have expanded on after he went back to school to get his degree in classical music. Life has a lot of what ifs doesn't it. I think you're doing the best thing by playing it live! That's what we musicians do my friend. It would have to be a great feeling. I play drums and sing and it would give me goosebumps if a guitarist whipped one of those out for a gig! I would probably bring my pistol and run armed security while he took it to and from the venue.
Yes it plays beautifully. Very heavy though, like all the vintage Les Pauls. But that's how you get great thick, solid tone. I have compared photos of Randy's original guitar with this and it it spot on. Incredible how Gibson did it. Even fresh out of the factory.....it looked ancient!
Yes, he sure was - a complete contrast to the 'monster' I'd just seen on stage rippin' it up. Not much was known about him at the time so it was a surprise to discover how quietly spoken and easy going he was.
I saw him play live 3 times. Once on the Blizzard tour in 1980. Again in Aug 1981 at Port Vale Heavy Metal Holocaust and again at the end of '81 on the DOAM tour which is where I met him. It was after the show and he was on the stage as the roadies packed up around us. I got his autograph and we had a short chat - in reality, it was probably only a few minutes but a very precious memory. I pinch myself!!
Nice! I have the VOS model. I really like the aged one and I could have had an Aged model, I think was #014 but the extra $2000 changed my mind. I am still very pleased with my VOS model. Mine is #04x, in the 40's and the tuners are Schallers. You are the first person to bring this to my attention. Possibly the VOS made first. I ordered mine in November and paid it off in January. Now all I need is the Marshall that you have. From California, one RR fan to another, I play mine everyday! Thanks!
I told him how much I enjoyed his playing and that it was a great gig - just that sort of thing. He was very quietly spoken and thanked me. Wish I had a camera that day.
Great video...thanks for the presentation. I'm glad that you decided to play the guitar, and not showcase it forever. Such a waste to do that. Cheers from Philadelphia.
Man, you are so lucky. I'm only 19, but my dad got me into Ozzy when I was little and once I started playing, I worshipped Randy. Seeing all the pieces you have really makes me jealous, haha. Especially of that 1959RR... all I have is a picture of him above my bed. Ever since I was 12 I've wanted a cream Les Paul just like his. I finally saved enough to get a Gibson LPC about a month ago and I'm hoping it'll age very nicely. Really is a shame he died though, I would've loved to meet him.
Yes, he was very quiet. A total contrast from the monster I'd just seen on stage minutes before. We only spoke briefly and I told him how much I enjoyed the show and his playing - that kind of thing.
Nice! Gibson really did do a nice job with that. I assume the front damage under the bridge where you said it looked like something drifted, was probably something that happened over the last 30 years after he passed
"He used the stock pickups in his Les Paul, A Dimarzio Distortion in the bridge position and a Dimarzio PAF in the neck position of the Polka Dot V, and for his first Jackson I'm pretty sure it was the Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB and SH-2 Jazz. I'm not 100% sure on what pickups he had in his 2nd designed Jackson, but I think it was the same Seymour Duncan set-up." Well i guess google answers everything haha o_O
Negative. On his Jackson's used a Duncan distortion in the bridge and a jazz in the neck. Lots of ppl think he used a different Bridge pickup, but this is fact: Gibson 74 les paul: stock pickups Sandoval polka dot v: dimarzio super distortion II in the bridge and a paf pro in the neck. Jackson (both black and white) Duncan distortion (ceramic) in the bridge and a jazz (alnico) in the neck
I was was wandering if you would like 👍 to be a guest on my talkshow Hangin with the Dreamer and share your passion for all things Randy with my listeners
Hi onemorebrando - thanks for your comments. There are Celestions in the cab. RR did use Altecs but they are almost impossible to get hold of. As a result Marshall only consider the head to be signature even though they sold the 1959RR and 1960A as a half stack package. The cab is not signature - it is just a current 1960A quad finished in white Tolex. I ordered the 1960B (lower cab) directly with white Tolex to complete the stack.
@snakeTDgameLNERfan I got the strap from "Musicians Pro Shop" in Brisbane. It's leather and made by a company called "DSL" - I think they're Australian. It cost about $70. There are some on ebay from time to time by another Aussie company but waaaay more expensive.
if only people knew what they were seeing live, Randy i think inspired an entire generation of players, Dime said it best, Eddie van Halen had that ability but Rhoads was deaper in depth and such a dark classical touch and unique riffs, man what a shame he's gone....
I had a backstage pass gven to me during the gig. I got it from a girl who was going out with someone who worked at a local record store. She only went to see the support act "Girl" featuring a young Phil Collen and went home after that. Back then - tickets for gigs were sold at the venue or record stores. There was no agency or internet ticketing.
It's neat and amazing how Fender and Gibson manage to make replicas so exact from this to Ed's Franky to Jimmy's LP. Sadly it's just money as most owners just want to
@wipers86 I've never met him, I was negative 14 years old, but from what I hear, he was quite and mild mannered, but loud and fun when he was around friends.
Awesome thank you for your review. I've seen this guitar at the Guitar Center in Hollywood in a display case. I always wondered what it looked like close up. I imagine it's very heavy.
@SuperSubydude I think it was great that we had a choice from Gibson - VOS or Aged. Both are great guitars and I also had to weigh up the extra expense. I'm in Australia so either way it wasn't going to be a cheap purchase so i went the whole hog. Wouldn't it be great to own a VOS and an Aged! Maybe that's being greedy though - we're blessed as it is. Rock On!
Seems like a good price for a limited, rare and collectable Gibson guitar. A real 74 Les Paul Custom in white would probably be close to the same price. Randy kind of turned this model into an icon.
Guard all that with your life, sir. You’re a lucky, lucky guy! You might add a partial pack of Marlboro red cigs to your case for an extra touch of authenticity.
No worries - everyone is entitled to their opinion. No one forced me to purchase this guitar - I was waiting for Gibson to issue it and I'm very, very happy with my purchase and I am honoured to own it. However, I'm ceratinly NOT a "clown". Plus, companies, whether they are guitar manufacturers or fast food outlets are entitled to turn a profit - that's business. It's naive to think otherwise. I'm sure their employees are happy to have a job in these tough times too.
when i had my les paul, the first thing i did was put a brass switch ring and tip on it and gold schallers on it as i thought it looked cool, a few months later i was introduced to randy , and when i saw his les paul i thought "yes, someone gets it"
Not too difficult - as soon as they were announced by Gibson, I contacted the licensed outlets in Australia and America until I found a store with one in stock and purchased it using my credit card. It was #1 on my wants list and I just had to get one.
@wewantmoreglam I gottcha, l think ive seen an aged SRV strat , I dont know if there is an issue of Rory Gallagers strat... He was really quietly spoken - a total contrast to his onstage persona. He was very happy to chat and sign my programme. It was all very brief. He also seemed a little distracted. I'd say that was due to the rest of the tour being cancelled following that gig. This is probably the reason why the band Tommy/Rudy and Randy were on stage when the gear was being packed rather than letting the roadies just ship it all off to the next gig. They were probably going to keep pedalboards etc with them.
also did randy replace them with silver humbuckers instead of gold? Cause they originally have gold dont they? Or did he just wear the paint out. But if he did replace em what humbuckers are they?
To my knowledge, the original guitar is exactly as it was when it was put in to its case after Randy's final Knoxville show. His family have kept his gear in storage and have only accessed the gear for very specific reasons - such as allowing Gibson or Marshall to analyse the original gear for their 'signature' models such as this. I have also read that the family are impressed by this replica. I don't believe the original guitar has sustained any damage or wear since 1982 - just gentle ageing.
You met Randy Rhoads you are very lucky. You really are a true Randy Rhoads fan, He was the greatest and now lots of players like Zakk Wylde base there guitar style off him.
I wish I'd have one. I've always wanted a Gibson Les Paul especially the Randy Rhoads one. But it's just really expensive but I can tell it's worth every penny.
I gotta 87' LP black Custom and I gotta say that I wanna keep it looking nice for as long as possible. To me all those artificial dinks scratches and dents are an eye sore. However, if it's natural, it's sentimental.
Nice. I love guitars with wear and tear. Even though it is a Randy Rhoads replica and is totally badass, I would never own a guitar w/ someone else's name on it. Want all those wear marks to be my own. Awesome guitar nonetheless.......
It's kind of sad that it's "aged". It's like an old dog waiting for its owner to come home not knowing that the owner has died and isn't ever coming home...... (damn, I thought this prozac was supposed to help with my depression). Anyway, cool guitar!
Love this vid, I saw Randy at Port vale in '81, his les paul was white then not yellow. Gibson have had to copy a guitar which has been kept in a case for 30+ years. None of the crazing on the finish would have been present when Randy played this beautiful guitar.
The gold plating does wear off really quickly. I have a 3 year old Les Paul with gold pickups and one of them almost looks silver already - especially in photos. I don't know if he replaced them or not - the guitar was already second hand when he got it - who knows for sure? His guitar tech on the Ozzy tours (Pete Mertons) would know and I don't believe he's been inetrviewed.
I have a 97 studio ; ebony and gold trim. Most of my gold is still in pretty good shape. The bridge has been replaced with a Tonespro locking that I rubbed hard to get some wear marks in but everything looks worn the same. Nothing really unusual or actually that bad. Guess they did better plating in those days.
The aged model had the higher ticket price so as a percentage I'd say the aged would bring a higher dollar return but is a higher outlay. That's assuming the market is favourable between now and whenever an owner chose to sell. Investment was the last thing on my mind when I bought it though.
@HEARTHEANGELSVOICES Thats true, thats true, and I understand what your saying. But that being said, I’d much rather have a Jimmy Page Les Paul after all of the customizations he made in the 80’s, than the way he had it in 1969.
I had the pleasure of going to his grave in San Bernardino at Mt. View Mortuary on Highland Ave. and swept it out using some dried up flowers left there. Someone had left a poem called "Six & twelve string god" that was kinda cool, I read it and put it back. Got to see him before I realized who & how good he was along with Motorhead on Monday, May 11th 1981 in Cleveland, Sec 2 Row B (2nd row) Seat 20 right in front of Rudy. He has remained my idol since ♫ and I own 7 Les Paul's.........for now !
I like wearing out my own guitars .Buying a guitar that is made to look worn out by someone else is ridiculous to me.My opinion.None the less ,very cool man you're stoked.I wish I could have met him. I probably would have bugged him for a lesson until he had security drag me away
Thanks for the positive feedback. I would say the neck is closer to an SG than a chunkier Les Paul. I have an SG standard and it feels very similar. In fact RR was an SG player before he was given the Les Paul.
Keith Williams thanks for the quick response Keith. My buddy has a 2010 SG Standard which has a very fat neck (fatter than my Les Paul with 60's neck. I've also played SG's (specially the 61 RI's) with very slim necks. Would you mind embellishing a bit? Thanks again.
The specs for the neck can be found here www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-Custom/Randy-Rhoads-Les-Paul-Custom/Specs.aspx - not sure how much that helps you. I would definately class it as a thinner neck as I have small hands and it feels just right. I find thicker necks to be a bit of a handful - which this guitar is definately not.
Marshall released them about 4 years ago - signature Randy Rhoads 100W head and non-signature but matching quads. Most guitar shops could order them in for you.
You saw Randy live 3 times?!!! You fortunate rascal. Lovely guitar. Does it play well? So all of that aging was done to match his guitar? I'm surprised they have not done another run of these. Iv never been a fan of aged Les Paul's, but this one just has so much history in it you would have to get the aged model, beautiful Guitar!
Man thats so awesome I would so love to have that. If 1 of Randy's guitar s would ever go up for sale it would be millions. Nice vlog.

Thank you!
Awesome! I can't wait to see it
Yes, it is a fair weight. Gibson state on their website that they try to keep the raw neck and body weight to below 8 3/4 lbs.
Yes, he was very quiet. A total contrast from the monster I'd just seen on stage minutes before. We only spoke briefly and I told him how much I enjoyed the show and his playing - that kind of thing.

@HEARTHEANGELSVOICES Your right, nothing beats owning a guitar that looks, sounds, and feels just like the one played by your idol.
I was was wandering if you would like 👍 to be a guest on my talkshow Hangin with the Dreamer and share your passion for all things Randy with my listeners

At the bindings it measures 2" (50mm) and then obviously goes thicker with the body contour to the bridge.

@riccanator Thanks. I promise I'll plug it in, crank it up and post a video soon.
I believe they have all been sold but they were selling from around $7-$9000 US dollars when they were in guitar stores.
What a great guitar! Amazing!
It's neat and amazing how Fender and Gibson manage to make replicas so exact from this to Ed's Franky to Jimmy's LP. Sadly it's just money as most owners just want to
Yes - he had just played a gig. But they were packed away by the time I met him.
Does anyone know if there is felt between the body of the guitar and the strap buttons??
Amazing !
@wipers86 I've never met him, I was negative 14 years old, but from what I hear, he was quite and mild mannered, but loud and fun when he was around friends.
@thelolguy007 Thanks for your comments. it's a great guitar for sure. You can see footage of me playing it live on RUclips too.
Randy was the best guitar player of all time as far as i'm concerned. Thanks for the video : )
Perfectly said!
I never knew Gibson did this...thanks for sharing and all the additional knowledge.
awesome!
lucky man to see him live and meet him congrats on that
@blindmellonchittlen The point of an aged guitar in this case is that it is aged and worn as per the original Randy Rhoads Gibson Les Paul.
Thanks ampRiser
Awesome thank you for your review. I've seen this guitar at the Guitar Center in Hollywood in a display case. I always wondered what it looked like close up. I imagine it's very heavy.

5k for a dinged up signature model? Insane!
Michael Pickett you’ll be really happy you don’t have one then.
@@wewantmoreglam7798 I just prefer a guitar with legitimate wear or for 5k give me something perfect

Holy shit. I am beyond jealous of your Randy collection. Very nice sir
how long did you see him for, you are so lucky!
so this is exacly what randy's guitar looks like today?

Nobody ever made a Les Paul look as cool as Randy did. Every after him we're all copy cats
Where did you get that snakeskin strap pleese reply
Do the make the Randy Rhoads model in Left Handed >>>????

Really appreciate this video! How would you describe the neck? Chunky 50s or more of a slim 60s? Can't seem to figure this one out.
I find thicker necks to be a bit of a handful - which this guitar is definately not.
i think it was called cream
amazing guitar bro!
Marshall released them about 4 years ago - signature Randy Rhoads 100W head and non-signature but matching quads. Most guitar shops could order them in for you.

No - only during the gig.
