Free was a great band and Paul Kossoff's playing was unique and very expressive. Two of my favorite bands from 68 to 70 was Free and Taste with Rory Gallagher.
I've been listening to so many guitarists for years and to this day no one achieves such captivating vibrato as Paul. Miss him. My favorite song of him is Molten Gold
I discovered Jared at my local watering hole in Ottawa Canada ("the brass monkey") and I was totally blown away by Jared's presence, energy and just total kick-assery. I left an instant fan and have been ever since!
Only recently came across JJN and whilst many are trying to get more complex and faster, he fully embraces the power note players of the past and builds on that and add his own flair - and sounds fantastic
I'm glad Paul Kossoff is finally getting the recognition as dude was better than Clapton when Clapton was at his height of fame , why do I say this ? Because Eric went to Paul and asked him how do you do that vibrato
Doesn't matter that he died young what he did with free made him LEGENDARY and one of the greatest guitarist's EVER nobody had kossoffs feel vibrato or passion playing a Gibson Les Paul
@@sixslinger9951 I think by the time he done that other stuff he was absolutely obliterated by drugs. If he had been in a position where he could've had someone to keep him straight the sky would've been the limit. You're right about the stuff outside of Free.
Free was my second ever concert after Creedence Clearwater Revival. Paul Kossof was really grooving that night at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1971.
notice lately, we've seen greeny, Duane's burst, Pauls guitar and some others showing up in the hands of the newer gen? I feel like the guitar gods are smiling and the old guys who retired from Gibson and Fender gotta be ever so proud of their legacy!!
The Kossoff burst is iconic, for sure, but the most impressive thing about this clip is the fact that JJN sounds just as good with his €600 Epiphone. The tone on this guys fingers is amazing. Cheers. HM
Its not that uncommon to hear vibrato with the width and speed Koss used in blues. We think of rock music but this was just him playing blues in a rock band. Theres a ton of people with vibratos like this but they dont use it as much….
In case y'alls ears didn't pick it up, that's some cool cool finderpicking. Third time watching the vid. Now I understand why he has his signature amp.
I got that Early Nuge Vibe too. Older I get though I’m agreeing it’s the player more than the guitar. I’d love to own a Holy Grail Les Paul but probably not sound much better than I do on my ‘98 Standard. It’s a good one too.
this is a tone that i have pursued. I get close but always thought almost... Im not a cork sniffer but its the guitar. first not he played on it i was like thats pauls sound. I always said any lp will get you there. I might have been wrong.
I actually have an Agile 3100, that looks similar, (not anywhere near as cool!), and even has a similar tone! It just seems to come alive on Koss riffs, (not that i can really play them any good!), got it 2nd, i know it has Gibson pots, but nothing to identify the pups. Don't care if they are the stock Agiles or not, never gunna change them, just love it!
One thing about Koss, he never used pedals, just him his guitar and amp. For me, Koss is the only one on a par with Page for the passion in his playing, so damn emotive. I always say Koss made the guitat Sting!
The sessions melt on the acrobatic pull.with de kossoff guitar ,more like a note on ice than within a scale ,How did the sock spare for the independent?
I've listened so many brilliant, not so briiant average and shockingly poor guitarists trying to get kosoffs sound. But in my opinion none come very close to him. Sorry guys. None of house can get the free sound right. What a legend!
I mean it's got a good tone, but if that's Paul Kossoff main 59, it just shows that the tone is in the players hands. The Les Paul that I always seen pictures of there is no finish left at all.
Nostalgia is very expensive, after watching a couple of guys on RUclips compare a few '59's and '60's LP's to a Epiphone Standard '60's LP, very few people would ever know you're playing a 63 year old gem!! In fact, I'd bet many people would choose the Epiphone as the old gem, because the sound difference is so minimal!
you played the opening chord wrong man!..kossoff placed his little finger on the E string sounding an A note together with the rest of that A chord....to give it a more heavier sound!
I love the rockin sounds, but I always want to hear these straight up clean, just a bit, so to get a baseline as to what comes out of the guitar before it gets processed and eq'd and overdrived. Kinda like over-roasting coffee, at some point all kinda seems the same.
That looks like the guitar Paul Kossoff threw up in the air at the last gig by Free. The guitar he threw went like thirty feet up and when it landed the neck broke at the fifth fret. Some genius rebuilt it but I can’t remember the guy’s name.
It's like if Ray Lewis (an NFL linebacker) played guitar. I would not even let this guy play my 2002 Chinese Stratocaster that I paid $31.50 for, much less something important. It is impossible to copy this guy. The way he picks with his index finger looks bizarre and he has his thumb ready to go too, so it is almost like he has 2 picking hands with 2 picks. He can go so fast while still have amazing clarity and tone. Jared is one of my current favorite guitar players. He's like Ted Nugent, X 2.
I love all your rig rundowns very much but you’re doing some artist that you’ve already had on before for a second time when you haven’t even done some of my all time favorites even once yet. Please can you try to do one with the legendary Mr. Philip Sayce or maybe another guitar legend like Mato Nanji?

It’s still hard to believe that when “All Right Now” was recorded, the oldest member of the band was 20.
I think Andy Fraser was only 18, born in 52 ✌️
Truth
@@jcsk8 Kossoff was 19, Andy was 17
why that when all great bands were doing their thing , in their 20s.
Wasn’t the bass player 16?😂

No words.....I'm there with you and add humble pie with steve
Fantastic sounding guitar made even better with Kossofs vibrato. Peter Green, Snowy White and Gary Moore were also masters of the Les Paul 1959.
So good to hear and see someone who knows and gets the essence of Paul Kossoff and the importance of his great vibrato. Thank you.
everyone knows about Paul Kossoffs vibrato
Paul Kossoff was my first favorite guitar player and still in my top hand full!
Paul Kossoff is the reason that I've had a lifelong love of the Les Paul. Both Paul and Mick Ronson are still in my top 10 favourite guitarists ❤
That midrange honk just hits you right between the eyes.
Paul Kosoff soul is still living in that guitar....I can hear it...
Not if I was playing it. 😅
Man yeah. Free were one of my first influences, Paul Kossoff is the man.

I saw Free in Glasgow in 1970, and this may well have been the guitar Koss was playing.
Two things most of us guitar players want. Paul Kossoff's guitar, and Paul Kossoff's vibrato.
