  • Morgen!" ("Tomorrow!") is the last in a set of four songs composed in 1894 by the German composer Richard Strauss. It is designated Opus 27, Number 4. The text of this Lied, the German love poem "Morgen!", was written by Strauss's contemporary, John Henry Mackay, who was of partly Scottish descent but brought up in Germany.
"Morgen!" remains one of Strauss's best-known and most widely recorded works. Strauss himself recorded it in 1919 accompanying the tenor Robert Hutt on the piano,[1] and again in 1941 conducting the orchestral version with tenor Julius Patzak and the Bavarian State Orchestra. His last recording of it was 11 June 1947, a live broadcast on radio with Strauss conducting the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and soprano Annette Brun.
    Solo sopran: Ernestina Jošt
    piano: Ivan Pernicki
This was Ernestina final concert for Ljubljana Academy of Music, where she graduated. She got suma cum laude grades for her singing. I hope you will enjoy this emotional performance.

    Mastering: Iztok Zupan
    Head of production: Gal Nagode
    Assistant director: Juš Hrastnik
    Director and producer: Primož Zevnik
    English translation:
And tomorrow the sun will shine again
And on the way which I shall follow
She will again unite us lucky ones
As all around us the earth breathes in the sun
Slowly, silently, we will climb down
To the wide beach and the blue waves
In silence, we will look in each other's eyes
And the mute stillness of happiness will sink upon us

Yes, she is going to have an amazing career, and I am certain that Primož will be recording her concerts and recitals for years to come. On his channel, you will find hundreds of videos of the most beautiful musical performances, by his Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra and Choirs, and by Ernestina and other superb soloists, that you are ever likely to see and hear. Here's a starting suggestion... from the orchestra's Very last concert, in December 2018 ("Zadnje potovanje domov": "Last Journey Home"). This is the first song that I learned to sing in Slovene from memory, and you will find the English verses as translated by my good friend Tog in the onscreen captions.
And please read Primož's notes accompanying this video so that you know the emotion of the verses and the sad story of Carinthia, once a part of Slovenija. Almost everytime I sing along with Ernestina on this one, my eyes get wet thinking about the history and heartache of that beautiful countryside at the foot of the Alps.

Yes, her voice is absolutely lovely, and always has been. But no, it is not hurried, and no, he doesn't need to slow down.

    • @tokkia1384

@@conradinhawaii7856 it’s just my opinion. I personally prefer it to be slower. There isn’t a numerical metronome indication in the original score as far as I remember so it’s quite subjective. I did however feel like she was making an effort to keep up with his tempo rather than him matching her. But I may be wrong as I have a bias towards a slower pace for this piece.

Nothing wrong with a personal preference. I have heard some pianists drag out "Morgen", and others rush it like they were late for "happy hour". When I learned it decades ago on piano, this was the tempo in which I played it. And you are correct... there is no tempo specified on Mister Strauss's original score.
If you are new to Ernestina Jošt, look for other videos under her name, or under "Zevnikov" on RUclips. My friend Primož Zevnik was her high school music tutor, and now directs and produces these videos. Also, look for her as a soloist on the videos of "Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra and Choruses", the high school/youth orchestra founded and directed by Mr. Zevnik in 2002, and where Ernestina got her start as a soloist. And you will also find her as a frequent soloist with the superb "Carmen manet" women's choir, based in her hometown of Kranj, which is composed of graduates of Gimnazija Kranj. She recently graduated with honors from the Ljubljana Academy of Music with a Masters degree in lyric singing and, no doubt, has a wonderful performing career ahead of her.
