      Vern Meyer Yeah so trees don't do anything for us right? Nothing to do with balancing out the carbon dioxide that it's making our planet warmer every year right?
      Every tree that is cut matters believe it or not.
      If people weren't so vain this planet wouldn't be as fucked as it is.
      It wouldn't kill anyone to use a fake tree for the holidays, but it's too much to ask I guess.

    One big fake tree and a couple of small ones, too.
    I like the smell of a fresh pine, but it's not worth killing over, and getting rid of the tree-corpse afterwards is too much trouble. Pine-needles EVERYWHERE.
    Fake one are easy to put up, require no care, and can be reused year after year.
    Plus, if yours is made of PVC and iron wire, the fire-hazard goes way down.
    PVC is much less flammable than dry wood.

    We don't' have real christmas trees in my country, so I had a fake one when I was younger, the same as everyone else. I don't think I have ever seen a real one on display before.
    Never understood why a people would want to kill a tree, haul its carcass into their house and then pretty it up with shiny things anyway. Btw I feel the same way about flowers too. Seems sort of disgusting to me really. Better to give a live plant as a gift - which I do on mothers day with my mom each year. "Happy mother's mom! Here is more responsibility!" My family uses a live pine tree planted in large pot. Usually lasts about 3 years before it grows to big to use, than we plant it somewhere in the wild and use new one in line planted few years before (we have 3 growing at various stages of development replacing each other and planting new one in empty pot remaining from the tree we planted in the wild). It is a sort of a tradition and there is already a small forest of ex Christmas trees.

  • @erocicTheGreat

    What about the impact of fake trees? Plastic, manufacturing them, cost vs buying a real one each year. Both sides of the argument were not presented, the title was a little misleading.

    • @gacorley
      @gacorley 9 лет назад +2

      To me, the biggest advantage to a fake tree is it's reusable. Take care of it, pack it away every year, and it'll last for decades. I haven't looked into it, but surely that offsets the environmental impact.

    • @FlRELAlR
      @FlRELAlR 9 лет назад

      I agree! I was hoping for a scientific breakdown showing environmental costs of plastics, as you mentioned, vs the cost of real trees being burned or landfill ridden. The monetary costs of real ($25-$45 typically) vs artificial ($75-$250) is subjective, since it can somewhat even out for a few years, but the artificial wins, as long as they do keep it for a few decades (like my parent's 30 year old fake, and my old 10 year old fake)

    • @loverrlee
      @loverrlee 9 лет назад

      Thank you! That was exactly what I was thinking! My family has always had a fake tree, but I think they are actually much worse than a real one. They may SEEM like they are better, for your short lifespan, but they can't decompose, so they will inevitably end up in some landfill someday.

    • @loverrlee
      @loverrlee 9 лет назад

      George Corley Like you said, only for those short decades. But what happens to that tree once you or your whole family are no longer around? I know that sounds morbid to think about, but it is the truth that your tree will last MUCH longer than your entire family. So what will happen to the tree? Are you going to make sure that Christmas tree is in your will? Passed down from generation to generation? If not, it could end up in a yard sale or thrift store and go to a new family to have for decades, but it is more likely that it will someday break, be non-reparable, and then wind up in a landfill where all those materials that it was made out of will sit because one little part of it became broken and no longer usable. That is verses a tree that, yes, has a life, and each year a new life is sacrificed to decorate your home, but once it is used, goes back into the cycle of the planet without much impact, because it can fully decompose. But that is the circle of life. Things live, and then they die, and then they go back into the world. Plastic has disrupted the normal cycle of life by introducing things that can't easily decompose and last much longer than lifetimes, and within only a few generations have posed a threat to the entire world. :/

    • @gacorley
      @gacorley 9 лет назад +1

      ***** This is why it would be interesting to know some things about the artificial trees. Are they recyclable? What kinds will have less impact or are more durable and long-lasting (they're not all fully plastic -- many have metal cores, and some are made entirely of aluminum)? All in all I expect fake trees are a small fraction of the plastic that ends up in the garbage, but it is something to think about.

    Lets examine the Christmas Tree tradition. We take this life form that is effectively immortal, could easily live for a thousand years, and chop it down. Then we shake its dead needles out, wrap it in plastic netting, tie it to the roof of our cars, drive it home, than put its slowly dying body in our living rooms. Then we hang cheap Chinese made lights and ornaments on it, and put more cheap Chinese made stuff under it for a few days. Then when we're done with it, we throw it away. In my family, we chuck it in the backyard to dry out for a few months, then burn it in the summer.

    Where I live (Argentina), apart from the fact that we celebrate christmas in summer*, you'll never see a once-alive christmas tree, it just feels too wasteful to chop a tree to keep it decorated in your livingroom for about a month.
    33M trees is not a huge number, and if they come from farms and are replenished (and not from wild forests), then I see no harm in such a (relatively) small agro industry (I'd say It's roughly 30.000~50.000 hectares dedicated to tree farms, not a big number really).
    Maybe I'd argue that spending 1 bill. a year to decorate houses for a month or so is quite wasteful. And I still wouldn't feel comfortable chopping a tree just to make my house look more christmasy. If my european ancestry crawled from their graves and cursed me for not having an actual tree for christmas, I'd probably keep one in a pot.
    *Which is totally awesome.

    Already said this in a video with Lacy in something like 2013..2014- that music in the background can be nice if there are noises around you in reallife, it could kind of like hold your attention like, people talk but they have pauses and the music keeps going that way your attention somewhat stays on the video, but can also distract you from the important words of the video because you pay attention to the music.. in a way that could be a training.. focusing on the words instead of music.. I listen to 5-10 musics all the time ebfore marathons or just 4 fun or just while playing games.. but usually while watching a interesting film or series.. in this case getting some random all kinds of science facts of youtube, I don't think music is so good or at least not so loud, I have my winamp and windows media player Rob dougan clubbed to death at 1% all the time to keep me not bored, imagine them fighting eachother while listening here.. so overall I think the music in the backgruond in these videos is a mistake.. or at least it should be lower volume ;p DNews rullz 0verall though.. just pointing out something :) and the audiences might learn better without or with lower volume music..

      My cat doesn't care about silly things like if a plant is 'real' or 'fake'. He eats it any way.

    I have and like fake trees. Mainly because if you buy a fake one, once you put it up and after the holidays you are going to have to throw it away and buy a new one next year.

    I remember when being kid my mom asked me to add water to our Christmas tree’s base. I asked why. And she said to keep it fresh. I then said but it has no roots, isn't that torturing it since it can't drink? The next following years, we used the fake tree. 😆

    90% of trees remain planted, year-in, year-out. It's the most winning crop of them all.

    Shocking, how some people start arguments over this.... Real trees, fake trees; it's all about the spirit of the holiday. I myself like both, a lot, but for the past 4 years I've been using a fake tree, for conveniences sake.

    I like real Christmas trees better. Now you may assume that I think people who use fake trees are evil....
    I use real trees because where I live, we can go out to the back yard, cut down a tree for free, then plant it out front when Christmas is over. This year we found a Norwegian Pine. Christmas just wouldn't be the same for me with a fake tree. The smell and look of a real one are things I have associated with happiness my whole life, and it would just feel empty without it.

    My fav Christmas tradition is that me and my sisters all sleep in one room together. We all end up waking up at 1 and we have to wait 6 more hours to wake our parents up. I'm posting this comment at 2:30 am on Christmas Day. Yup...

    If you're into celebrating the b-day of an alleged dude from a few Milena ago, why not just get a small tree, plant it in a large pot and take care of it, this way you're going to have a x-mas tree for the years to come.

    I rock the Douglas Fir. With silver bells, popcorn and beaded garland, and homemade dinosaur ornaments. Got some multi-colored lights on there too. Thinking of throwing some pine cones or apple ornaments of their next year as well. Maybe a live squirrel, those guys are cute.

    I cut down my own Christmas spruce from my own forest and carry it home on foot. Good for the forest and for the environment, although quite minuscule effect in both.

    Why would you spend 50+ dollars on a real tree every year when you can buy a fake one that'll last you 5+ years, pre-lit for about $90

    I dub everyone here, who's calling Christmas trees a "life form" in a way that implies they have any feelings or thoughts, SuperHippies.
    Also, I don't have a tree of any kind, because I only celebrate Christmas to the extent that it is important to people I care for. If all my friends and family were atheists, I'd buy 3 months of groceries and supplies in October, stay home until January, and forget that the holiday existed, to the greatest degree possible.

    I feel like those stats are pre-2008. Most families I know have continuously scaled down christmas stuff the past several years, because of the depressing weight of (a lack of) money. Skip the tree and lights, cook good food.

    Edit; Most of whom probably live in wooden houses, use wooden tools and equipment, and has wood to thank for progress in the world since we got our brains. You should buy a cacti houseplant and give it a hug every day.

    don't mind cutting trees for money, just put on an act upon replenish trees after that. I.E: chopping down 3 trees, you must plant 5 saplings back with certain rules applied throughout certain time length. and with that may be u get discount on taxes/ extension of license/ any guarantees.

    Since my family doesnt celebrate Christmas, we celebrate pagan beliefs of New Years (Noviy God - i'm russian), we wait till people throw out their trees on the 26th, take them while they are fresh and reuse them. After New Years, we enjoy a nice pine fireplace with the family when we cut the tree up :D

    Cutting down trees is wrong since I believe they are alive. With emotions and consciousness. I mean I understand cutting down for practical use but just to decorate and throw away? Really? And chemical trees are horrible too. I suggest if you have a garden, plant a tree, watch it grow, and decorate it at christmas yearly..If you don't have a yard, get some sort of plant that lives in a pot. Or a mini tree.

    When I was a kid, a natural Christmas Tree was a wonderful thing. The aroma that came out of those trees was intoxicating. Even the pine wreaths were super fragrant. Because of this amazing pine smell in the home (the smell of Christmas) you would put up with the mess of having a natural tree and needles all over the floor. Unfortunately, Christmas trees that are sold today have no aroma whatsoever, not to mention the crazy by the foot price tag. Today these trees are engineered, treated with chemicals and raised to grow faster and shed less, but this doesn't happen without sacrificing their natural beautiful scent. Sort of like cut roses today which have no scent at all... I will go artificial next year.

    Real tree = horrible allergies. Scratchy throats, itchy eyes, and skin rashes galore!
