  • This is Part 1 of 7 in a series of videos shot on SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line between 1997 and 1999. Featuring the Budd "Almond Joy" M3 cars, these videos take place from a few months before the first revenue run of the prototype Adtranz M4 set in 1997 and runs through to 1999 when both types of equipment were still mixed on the line a few months before enough M4's were on hand to permit withdrawal of the last Budd set.
    Part 1 features runby scenes at 69th Street and Bridge-Pratt.

    I've been very nostalgic about Philly lately. I know you have a lot more gems that we haven't seen yet, but I swear I need your autograph. Lol. You are definitely a star in my book. I remember being a kid in the 90s and always being excited to get on SEPTA back before and during the changes. It was great.

      @@vergilmontiero2558 I miss all of the Neoplans. AN440s (especially the 8000 Series), AN435s, and AN460s. NABIs. GMC RTS IIs. B10M Volvos. AMG Trackless Trolleys. Budd Almond Joy M-3s.
      All of those vehicles made SEPTA extremely fun to ride from the 1980s to the late 2000s. I only wish I was a teenager in the 90s to have enjoyed these vehicles a lot more. Especially the Almond Joys that were retired at the very end of the 90s.

      @@trainman1971 Have you ever noticed how much the brakes on the M4s sound like police sirens when they come on? That must be what's got opinions divided on those railcars.

    Where did ' Almond Joy' come from?

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  4 года назад

      The fan humps on the roof led some to give them that nickname.
      In the same spirit, when the M4's first came, I was nicknaming them "Mounds" because of the single equipment hump on the roof, but it never took off. lol
