I remember when this song and video were new in 1987 when I was 14 years old. I turn 50 at the end of this year (2022), and Soul Food to Go is still as fresh today as it was back then.
The original song is Sina from Djavan, a brazilian group music. Try to listening to it, I think you will enjoy it. There is a Italian version as well. ^^
The late 80s wasn't the best time for quality music but thank heavens for the Manhattan Transfer to save the day with this song. Such a great video. I so miss Tim.
This great group does not need to be in the top 40 to be popular. This group is in a league of their own. They are superb one of the most popular a cappella groups I’ve ever heard of. I would have loved to have seen this group performed back in the early 80s that was just about their hay day, this group is absolutely entertaining and they are performed all over the world one of my favorite groups. This song wasn’t their biggest song but it certainly was a lot of fun great memories of the 80s.
Saw them in concert at Montreux Jazz Festival (1981), then at Antibes Jazz Festival (1987) then in Cerritos, California around 2005 and I agree with you - they’ were the Best!
Reminds me of Walkabout's habit of filling time waiting for our check by quietly starting our acapella version of Freedom Is Coming, letting it build... and if asked for an encore (not uncommon) doing Siahamba at full volume. We nonplussed a few diners, but nobody ever objected...
I love MT with all my heart, though I'm just not sure about the video, the stop motion figures are creepy. I loved the album but this wasn't the best song on it.
So this video is about the members of TMT finding a soul food restaurant deep in the jungle, singing a song to a visibly annoyed cook while tripping balls, and then.. Getting served tiny living clones of themselves to eat...!!! Sounds like a horror movie. Who the hell wrote this nightmare???
This is so much fun! This song came out long before I was born but I am obsessed! The vocals and harmonizing are amazing. I hope this was a huge hit in the '80s (aka the best decade ever!)
A VH1 staple when I was a kid. How can you not like this song?

This song was playing in the WTC mall
There is no maximum number of times I can watch this vid!!! Love Manhattan Transfer. Ooo see'est si bon....
This song is sung by Djavan, a brazilian singer. Song "Sina"
You´re wright. This song was composed by Djavan in 1982.
Nice to see this in 4K quality. 👍

Yes, Djavan's tune originally named Sina, in Brazilian Portuguese, made the grade in América with this Manhattan Transfer version.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN JAZZ??
Tempi eroici.
2023...and this song just popped in my head outta nowhere. Claymation is still trippy as hell...lol but still crazy catchy...
Same with me May 2024...cheers!
The music is by Djavan, a great Brazilian composer.
Indeed. It was included on TMT's "Brazil" album.
July 1988, I flew First Class on TWA from JFK to Paris listening to this tune in a loop on my Walkman. Can never forget it!

The 80's, packaged in one video.
I always loved this song and the video. It should have been a Top 40 hit.
I had this song on a parents tape when kid, who know where it went lost, been searching this song for ages...finally 🥳
Have seen them ten times. Simply the best. This is their best song in my opinion. Absolutely always spectacular!!!!!!!!!
Only got to see them once, but yes, they were amazing. They made magic!
Saw them in concert at Montreux Jazz Festival (1981), then at Antibes Jazz Festival (1987) then in Cerritos, California around 2005 and I agree with you - they’ were the Best!
Great Video
I had this song stuck in my head even though I hadn't heard it in years. I still remember this from being a 9 year old when it came out.

There was no better era for this song styling, and the Manhattan Transfer were top of the class.
God, I miss them...
Just remember that this music is actually Brazilian, by Djavan. Its called "Sina", and Manhattan transfer did and adaptation.
Reminds me of Walkabout's habit of filling time waiting for our check by quietly starting our acapella version of Freedom Is Coming, letting it build... and if asked for an encore (not uncommon) doing Siahamba at full volume. We nonplussed a few diners, but nobody ever objected...
Wow! Adore this group!
They have always been simply awesome!
I remember them from my days in college back in the 80s 😊

Sina, Djavan
O luar, estrela do mar
O luar, estrela do mar

Someone with a sense of humor...
Pure joy - so glad to have rediscovered TMT after all these years.
😊
Will Vinton Claymation I presume.
Tasty phone…😂😂😂
Qué lo disfrutéis ❤️
I was 4 when this song came out. My father played this album often and always liked it. Even as a young child. What a great combo of voices they had.
This is so much fun! This song came out long before I was born but I am obsessed! The vocals and harmonizing are amazing. I hope this was a huge hit in the '80s (aka the best decade ever!)
Such a burst of imagination in music videos of the 80's.
a clever presentation of this great song. Manhattan Transfer are simply beyond compare.
5th grade. VH-1.
Saw them in 1997, at the Oakdale Theater, Wallingford, CT., with David Sanborn. Great show.
