RAW - The Biggest Day Ever Ridden on a Skimboard at The Wedge - Pro Skimboarding

- A lot of people have been asking to see the entirety of this footage lately so I thought I would post a video of a bunch of unseen clips from this day. You may recognize a few clips but a lot of it has never been seen, especially in raw form. I apologize for the brevity of a lot of the clips as well, I had been filming since 5 am and was running short on card and battery capacity and I wanted to make sure I had enough to capture the craziest stuff that went down that day as the swell filled in (its a bad idea to ask people to come risk their lives on big waves and then miss the shot ).
There is even more footage from this day and the following that I will post as well.

10:19 I used to bodysurf the Wedge way back in the middle to late 70's. I was from Santa Monica and was part of the "South Bay Crew" that would invade Newport on rare occasions. Anyway, I nearly broke my neck on exactly the same type of wave that injured this poor fellow (10:42). The Wedge is really dangerous. If you have a big wave under you it can easily be doubled or tripled in size by the jacking action of the outgoing reflecting wave. Worse, you only have about a foot or two of water beneath you and as as result, are essentially pile-drived right into the cement hard sand.
I knew a fellow that compressed and fractured two vertebre in his neck on a Wedge-wave just like this one. He was temporarily paralyzed but some months later managed to regain almost all his feeling an motion but could never quite walk the same again. I feel really sorry for this fellow. The Wedge for sure ain't Pipeline, but on big days you are equally at risk of broken necks or vertebre at this shorebreak. Fuckin-A!
I used to bodysurf the Wedge back in the late 50s and early 60s before people started using boards there. I had my suit ripped off a couple of times, but escaped any serious injury. We would take off on that side wave and try to make it across the bowl. It was more makeable back then and the wave was much thicker. Because of the wave, I started using an underwater takeoff to avoid that inevitable drop. It worked really well and worked well in Hawaii, at the Pipe and other big spots.
The guy wasn't just injured he ended up passing away.

I have so much respect for you skimboarders. Always have. The first time I ever saw a skimboarder throw his bbn board down, skim out to see them tut run around and surf a wave in and get covered err red up was as t Seal Beach believed vfc e it or bbn ot, on the North side of the pier. It blew my mind. I was like, "You... you can do that? IIt's allowed? What you skimboarders o at the Wedge rivals as my surfing going on today including foiling and big wave 4iders. Hell you guy uys ARE big wave riders. So much balls yo do w hth at you do.

I love watching these guys. Even the guys getting so worked is entertaining to watch. I always cringe when they get closed out or those strong waves propel them straight down. That is how you get paralyzed for sure. The thrill of the sport though, you never know what mother nature has in store once you committ to dropping in!

It's an amazing feeling tbh. In my like 15 years of surfing, I found you get the least hurt if you are in the barrel. Everytime I had a neck injury or something gnarly it was because someone else dropped in on me or I didn't make the barrel and got worked on the sand

@Jason Karl Definitely man, I'm from Hawai'i so I've seen every type of wave except deep ocean waves. My homebreak has the most broken necks and backs in the world lol just pure shorebreak in ankle deep water. The worst I got hurt was on like a small 5-7 day but someone else dropped in on my landed on the back of my head cause they didn't know what they were doing. I was underwater couldn't move and ended up having to hitchhike home. Could barely walk for a week and half. Thank god i still can
I wasn't skimboarder back in the day and those heavy shore brakes feel like a water bed falling on you it's truly our Young Mans sport..

What is it like when the wave Swallows you up. Can you provide a video of that aspect of the surfing. I know what it’s like to get pounded by a wave but these guys get swamped and pop up and go again.

Unfortunately no. He broke his spine and passed away during surgery nearly a year later. I posted those clips so that people can see how seriously dangerous it can be out there.

My heart goes out to his family, riding the wedge since 1977, I’ve always felt the smaller inside surf at the wedge is most problematic, being slammed to the bottom on a 15’ outsider, is way safer than a5’ insider, where, outside waves break in really deep water, inside waves break on tint broken sea shells ... and some sand. Brutal.....
That was Gene Peterson who was a Wedge regular. The Wedge at high tide and a good size swell is when you break bones, because it is so shallow and when the lip of the wave is so thick and pushing so much water if you land wrong it can be deadly. Really big Wedge you might drown, but probably wont break any bones usually.

So true I skimmed 30 foot waves at the wedge before I met tfue. Now I'm a skimmer turned pro streamer on fortnite making millions and only get arthritis instead of broken necks and shells in my teeth
