  • Founder of The Specials & 2Tone records, Jerry Dammer, appeared at The Abbeydale Picture House in Sheffield. This was a closely guarded secret. The evening was set, with music supplied by Trojan Explosion DJ duo, Hank & Greg, with a viewing of the film, followed by Trojan Explosion to finish. Then you heard the filmgoers come to life as the reality sank in, a wave of noise escorted The General through the crowd. This was an evening to remember. Sitting close to the front, with a pizza on his lap, surrounded by the people his idea influenced. This is one of only two screenings Jerry is doing. If being here wasn't enough, he also took too the decks to finish the night off.

I was 16 in 1979. Two tone was the best time ever. Am 61 now and still love it

I have always been jealous of people 10 years older than me. I was 16 in 1989. Stone Roses, Happy Mondays etc were great but I would have much rather been a teenager in 79. I have loved 2 tone ever since I saw The Specials on Top of the pops when I was a little kid. I used to draw Walt Jabsco everywhere when I was a kid.

Big thanks for sharing this superb video. In just 2 years, Jerry Dammers made a life lasting impact on millions of youths with his music and social commentary. C'mon Jerry, finish that album you've been working on for the last few years.

I have loved ska all my life but watching oldies dance to ska today makes me cringe. I used to love stomping about to ska but if I watch a ska band these days I have to stand back without getting involved and watch others make fools of themselves. Maybe it's just me but it is not the same as when you were young it looks so embarrassing!

Sad for you. I hope other aspects of aging are not equally distressing. I still wear my 20-hole Steel-toes now 40 years later.
It would just make you cringe, friend.

@@strummercash5601 Not at all. I still wear my Docs. I always will. It is just the dancing. It is only a recent thin g that has happened to me. A mate of mine pointed it out and I just can't unsee it now.

Yeah, I completely get that and have had my “I can’t unsee that” moments from my own youth. Haha! I sang in a punky-ska band in high school, The Abstracked, (best moments of my life, actually) and-maybe as a life-long starving artist 😄 I still fit the blue thin-lapeled and peg-legged shark-skin suit I wore then. When The Beat come to Minneapolis about every other year, I just must suit and lace-up, then skank like a teen even to the embarrassment of friends and family.
Please! Do not film me and show my old dancing ass video of this debacle! Great to chat-up another old Rude-Boy, my friend!
