  • She’s one of, if not the, most controversial and polarizing characters of the franchise. I think if we take a deeper look at this former authoritarian and rebellion leader, we’ll see a complex, flawed, and insanely interesting character, the likes of which we haven’t seen in many television shows, let alone an animated one. Continuing our Gem series, today I’m delivering the big one y’all have been asking for. We’ll go through her history, her powers, and, of course, the symbolism of her real-world jewels. I’m Kris Carr, and today I’m talking to you about Rose Quartz AKA Pink Diamond from Steven Universe

Pink is not a good person but I don't think she was ever intentionally malicious. She was abused by her fellow diamonds, always looked down on and was physically/emotionally punished for not fitting their mold. She did do a lot of bad things but I don't think she was aware of the severity of what she was doing at the time. It was because of her mistreatment that she felt the need to always hide aspects of herself. I find her to be a deeply tragic character, and personally it's irritating to see people throw out all the evidence of her abuse and simply state that she's evil...she's just complicated

Pink wasnt to begin with, but she learned and grew. Which is what the show is about, learning and growing. She couldn't lead a resistance as pink diamond, and gave that up to fight as rose instead. She only understood the wrong shes done the more she learned. I agree she's complicated which makes her more human.

Does anyone think that Pink's behavior reminds them of a child of abusive parents? That's kinda how it came off to me, which makes it kind of nice to see that Steven, essentially the next generation in the Diamond line was able to be such a loving person, showing that things can get better and people can escape the cycle of abuse.

@Andrew Mcfarlane I don't think seeing it in the right order would make what she did seem any better. She could've gone back for Spinel at any time (Steven wasn't able to fix the galaxy warp because his powers weren't working at the time, but there's no reason Pink's wouldn't work) but she chose not to because it was inconvenient. Rose let the psychological abuse she put Spinel through continue, so I can't see her as mature or a decent person. I see her how I see people like George Washington: bad people that did good things.

    • @nichole4968
      @nichole4968 4 года назад +7

@Andrew Mcfarlane I don't think Rose would be able to forget that. She had to atleast somewhat understand that Spinel was alive so she'd probably remember for longer, and I don't think she rebelled long after abandoning Spinel based off of "Now We're Only Falling Apart" and how long Ruby and Sapphire say they've been together, especially when you consider that Ruby and Sapphire got together a good while after the rebellion began.

  • @TheKurisa

You have to realize Pink is imatating her fellow diamonds. The treatment of spinal is because she was taught gems had a social class. She didn't understand she had value. Same thing with her pink pearl. They were accessories until she learned otherwise. I think Rose was embarrassed of what she did. Embarrassed how she used to think. It's easier to lie than to admit you were wrong

    • @birdomurdo
      @birdomurdo 4 года назад +39

Bit late but to add something. And Pink treating other Gems since their all lower then her except the Diamonds badly, would’ve became a habit. It’s difficult to get out of the bad habits even though you know it’s bad and you try to change it. Yes if you keep working hard enough and resisting to do it, you’ll end up never doing it. Rose had done the first two parts to fixing her habit: realizing and acting on it. But acting on it isn’t enough, you have to find the right way to solve it. But she’s basically having to fix this habit her self. I guess she never told her friends about any of her secrets since, you already know what happened. I also think Rose thinks Pearl keeping her identity a secret is already enough since in her diamond side, “she’s just a mere Pearl”. So she only had herself to find a way to fix her habit. No one to go off of and no one that can give advice.

The thing about Pink, I think, is that you have to consider the Diamonds and their origins. They each appear to have been born and bred into this mindset of ruthless superiority. It came naturally to them to treat other living beings like toys and commodities because they were never taught otherwise. If a child is strictly educated to believe that she's a goddess and that her purpose in life is to be served by others, it's hard to blame her for being spoiled. Yes, she did terrible things, but she was literally programmed not to know any better.
But unlike the other Diamonds, Pink started to grow up. She learned to be aware of the feelings of those around her. She still had drastic shortcomings, but without a responsible parental figure in her life it's really remarkable that she managed to reinvent herself in such a positive fashion. She considered the advice and emotions of friends and made an effort to mature beyond the selfish tyrant she had been trained to be all her life. That's commendable.
The other Diamonds, meanwhile, continued in their abusive ways for millennia. It took Steven's direct intervention and the simmering trauma of losing a loved one to finally foster change. The only reason we don't see more tragic, lingering examples of their mistreatment of their fellow gems is because they didn't form emotional attachments like Pink did, preferring instead to simply kill their subordinates. But, again... that's all they had ever been taught to do.
All the Diamonds were monsters. They were also all victims of their upbringing. But only Pink took the initiative to try to be neither.

I see pink diamond as a kid. Her character arc is reversed, we see what she did in the end to beginning. And like, I always thought the gems represented technology. Like pearl was a phone and spinel was a toy, but sentient. She threw a tantrum and broke her first phone and then given a new phone and a toy to play with instead. Like giving a kid an ipad right away, of course its gonna break, so you give them a toy. Like pink is a spoiled child, shes a diamond. The show gives these gems sentience though which makes it hard but the diamonds seem to treat them as tools, so why not pink too. Like how she supposed to know better. So yeah, everything she did was awful, but as a kid we do things, throw tantrums, break things, beg for a pet just to not take care of it in the end or change our mind wanting something else. Pink is curious, she loves other life, so she wants to save it, but she wanted the colony too. Like it's just, I dont know. How I interpreted the show. Like how the diamonds saw all these sentient beings as tools, but the gems have personalities and are fighting that. There. I dont know.

You misinterpreted why Rose never returned Pearl's feelings. Even if Rose loved Pearl dearly, Pearl was MADE TO SERVE PINK. Rose recognized this and knew that unless she removed herself from Pearl's life, there would always be that doubt that Pearl only loved Rose because she was her master. Yes Pearl was hurt deeply when Rose was gone, but it was a necessary pain for Pearl to find out who she really was without a maser.

She was content with how Rose relationship worked out she had fun with humanity get a boyfriend pretty much out live them and then she be her favorite again. Pearl was created to “obey & serve” Pink but became a friend who has feelings for you and you’ve essentially “friend zoned” them. Now she’s all angsty and jealous because you have partners. Just because Pink didn’t feel the same way doesn’t mean she had to be rude or remove herself from being her friend. As well (from what we saw) they never directly discussed their feelings.

I’m glad a lot of the comments are seeing pink as more complicated, rather than just bad. I’ve always loved that she was never perfect as a character, and even though I’ve always felt bad for pink pearl and spinel and everyone else she’s hurt, these were all things that she has tried to grow from and change herself from. She was never perfect, but she grew so much and tried to do what she thought was best at the time, even if it ended up causing pain. I’m not saying to forgive her actions, but that we have seen rose/pink turn into a completely different person over time (pun not meant). She’s gone from childlike and angry to protective and fighting for what she believes in to trying to have a new life with those she loves. I honestly love her character arc, although she does have her faults, and I hate when people just write her off as all bad. It especially spiked up because of her abandonment of spinel, and we as a fandom went back to pure anger towards her for a while. It makes me sad, especially because her character was written to be so much more than just “bad.”

  • @marsh9564

As the audience, we oughtta remember - we're getting Rose/Pink's character developement in reverse. She was ultimately good, it just took her several thousands of years to get there, and where she started from is so incredibly far from where she ended, so of course the farther we go back the more we'll see of her suffering and in turn causing others to suffer. Cycles like that take a while to break, and as Steven struggles with his new powers we are probably going to see him in turn having to deal with "familiar" *wink* things... Needless to say, I'm super stoked for the future of this show! :)

  • @recurse
    @recurse 4 года назад +74

One reason to love Pink: without her no man, woman or child nor any other living thing would be alive on earth today in the world of the series. A different diamond would have developed the colony instead and we would have all been efficiently killed. Literally trillions of brings owe their chance to exist to her, and that ought to cut her some slack.
I think Pink exists to make us deal with the dissonance between our ideas of what it means to be a good person and the reality of actual people. Steven Universe deals extensively with a concept that doesn't resonate in our day in age: forgiveness, specially the need for forgiveness. The Pearl story arc foreshadows this, and I think it's going to be the main theme of Future - Steven is going to have to face, reconcile with and forgive his mother.
In so doing, he will need to face and forgive these same aspects of himself.

  • @dragonfruit5293

I think that seeing earth pushed Pink to be a better person. She obviously didn't want the life she had on Homeworld because of her fellow diamonds and the bad things she had done. She wanted to leave that behind so she can be seen as who she wanted to be, not who she was. I believe that her childish behavior is what encouraged her controversial acts. The other diamonds also encouraged this by ignoring her and treating her like a child. If Pink wanted things to change she needed to change. The life she was living was past the point of redemption, so she made a new one as Rose Quartz and later on, Steven. I always see these two as seperate people, because Pink was different than Rose. They were the same gem, yes, but that doesn't mean that they were not different people at heart. Pink wanted attention and respect from the diamonds, Rose wanted all the things she loved to be protected.

Everyone is hating Pink, but in reality, we are seeing her story backwards, how she ended being Steven, to her as Rose Quartz, to finally Pink Diamond, everyone hates her because of how Rebecca Sugar is telling her story, but if you really look into it, she was abused and she was taught how to be abusive, which meant when she saw that the other diamonds thought of her as annoying, she portrayed that onto Spinel and left her because that what she thought was right, at first she didn't know what was wrong until she got her second Pearl, that she realized that what the other diamonds were doing was wrong, that she didn't want the earth to be turned into a colony because she saw how precious humans were and how unique they were as a species, how they learn from their mistakes, and how they can forgive, she wanted to join that world when she decided that she didn't want to be either Rose Quartz or Pink Diamond, she wanted to see how to live like a human and be able to do human things, but she couldn't because she was a gem, so she had Steven, she had him, not because she wanted to get away, but to be human, to do human things, to see it through Steven's eyes, even though she gave up her physical form, her memories are still inside her gem, locked away in a secret folder that Steven is getting pieces of whenever he visits places she has been, it's all coming out.

Pink is kinda like a French 17th Century tragic heroine.
The genre of tragedy during in France of the 17th Century was based on characters that could not escape a terrible fate. Pink is similar in the sense that she desperately tries to escape from her purpose and her Homeworld, to become better but she still makes things worse. There’s a twist though, as Pink does get a happy ending of some sort. Tragedy was also based on catharsis which is the cleansing of passions. Basically tragedy depicted passions aka impulses and whims negatively. Pink kinda fits this as her foolishness and intuitive actions caused a lot of harm.
This analogy is especially true if you view Pink from White’s old perspective.

I see rose / pink as analogous to an abusive person who learned how damaging they were and put the work into change into a better person but never tried to make restitution to the people she hurt before.
It's the classic philosophical question of: at what point have we done enough good to outweigh our bad?.
And I think you can never truly make that transition until you try to make amends to the people you hurt.
If Rose could have had more time to see the consequences of her decisions I think she would have made amends with her sisters and her subjects and all the victims of her actions but we don't always get the chance to repair what we break.

The one redeeming quality that keeps her from being a terrible person is whenever she learned she was hurting people she stopped.

Discussing themes in media doesn't degrade the experiences of people who have really experienced those things. We create art to explore the complicated nature of being humans. And I think we're lucky to be in a time where media is now free to explore the our more complicated dynamics.
Very few abusers look inside themselves and admit that they are abusive and actively hurting the people around them. Ignorance that you were doing harm does not excuse the harm that is being done. Good actions you perform do not erase the bad you have done it only means you have ceased to actively be a bad person.
Like I said when Rose learned she was hurting people she stopped. But if no one ever told her she was hurting them she never knew to stop.
The best example of this Rose's relationship with Pearl.
Pearl was never going to confront Rose about the one sided nature of their relationship or being burdened by Rose's secrets. Pearl didn't even have the conceptual understanding to express why it was wrong.
So Rose kept hurting Pearl by getting into relationships with humans and making her lie to the only two other people on the planet who could understand her.
I don't think Rose wanted to hurt Pearl and I think if she knew she was she would have stopped. But Rose never evaluated her actions for harm she might be causing she always relied on outside feedback.

don't judge someone for their past.
judge them by how much they've changed because of it.
yes, pink diamond isn't a good person. but she saw her bad behavior and went out of her way to corrected it despite what the diamonds (aka parental figures) had to say.
she sacrificed her royal status protect earth *and* other gems. she saw something she loved and wanted to protect. that shows how her attitude changed after the volleyball incident. she doesn't have a tantrum while the earth gets destroys she actively goes out and stops it. i love pink diamond bc she's complex and a well developed gray character.
personally i'm fine with people hating her. she has done a lot of bad things. but it's not fair to say she's a villain. pink diamond herself thinks she is still a bad person (hence the song love like you) but she has done so much good for humankind and gems alike. the present *is* better now that she's gone. but humanity wouldn't exist without her sacrifice. gems would still be slaves to the diamonds. everyone is better off because of *how* she left it. i think the series doesn't show enough of the good she has done. i'm not here force anyone into making pink your favorite gem. i just want ppl to understand that she changed and grew as a person. if you still hate her after that, it's fine.
as for the volleyball scenario, pink never hurt volleyball on purpose. the reasoning behind pink's tantrums is justifiable. the other diamonds had been abusing her for so long that all of that rage built up when they said no to giving her a colony. at the time volleyball was her closest friend so naturally she tried to comfort pink. please understand that pink diamond fans don't excuse her abusive past for hurting volleyball. we're trying to tell you that the intent behind your actions matters. if it was intentional or a repeated offense *then* pink would rightfully be evil. in fact volleyball's injury encouraged pink to become a better person. she realized that sitting around and complaining made things worse. the episode volleyball makes it clear the volleyball and pearl knew pink at two different times in her life. before and after she became a better person.
pearl and pink's relationship seems to be the biggest misunderstanding in the fandom. rebecca stated that the problem wasn't that pearl's love was unrequited. the problem was that *pink diamond's* love was unrequited. rebecca stated that pearl loved rose and only rose. pearl was the only one who knew pink and rose were the same but still treated them as two different people. pink knew that pearl didn't love her true form. that truth weighted on her self esteem. before meeting greg she felt like the same terrible person. she told him everything and he still loved her. honestly, i don't blame pink for dismissing pearl. if i was pink i wouldn't want to date someone who didn't love me for my true self either. pink couldn't control how pearl felt and that's the point.

This is also why Pink abandoned Spinel, Rebecca Sugar said that Pink left Spinel, because to Pink, that meant maturing. It’s funny how people who call Pink evil now, would have agreed with you before the movie came out. I still stand by the fact that Pink is NOT EVIL.

    • @dolfimatteo8455
      @dolfimatteo8455 4 года назад +3

Imho, maturing or not, she should at least leave Spinel in homeworld instead of just standing there for what could've been FOREVER, actually knowing that they are ETERNAL BEINGS as they don't need to sleep nor eat or anything else you know
I'm probably just mad about it but I believe it was just rude, as I felt like in the movie you can see her having literally cringe-like feelings towards Spinel. So I kind of associated it to the reason why she didn't want to see her anymore.
Your comment lighted me up and now I realized she might feel cringy cause of spinel's childish act BUT THAT'S DEFINETLY NOT ENOUGH to leave her all alone I MEAN C'MON.
Ofc it was a writing choice made to give Spinel a reason to be the angry villain but we're judging pink/rose by what she did kind of ignoring the external real-life forces so.. I'm not gonna forgive her for abandoning Spinel. As volleyball was actually took away from her, she sorta has no intention in that but Spinel being her playmate till she got a colony all for her should have meant at least something in her feelings, don't you think? As she was the most emotional and to all gems relatable, as seen in her reveal episode (when she morphs into rose quartz for the first time), didn't she just give a thought about poor Spinel once? Maybe give it a try and see if having her around would have made colonization little bit less boring? As well as when she was on earth, as Spinel was definitely loyal to her, she didn't even care about picking a FREE ally who's just been waiting for her.
As I was writing this last part I just thought that maybe at one point pink/rose might have thought that it was a little bit too late to just go back to Spinel and pretend everything's fine, but I mean, no. That was horrible in first place!
Also I kind of wanted to argue with your comment about her starting to change when she abused volleyball
Well as 2nd Pearl was already around during Spinel's abandon, it makes me believe it was not enough for her to actually change.
I myself believe that Pink actually changed the moment (as it is even shown in the episode I mentioned before) she sees how beauty planet earth is, we can see her starting to question the diamond authority, Which escalates in wanting to change em, but as she alone doesn't manage to do that, she just goes to changing her status and leaving the diamonds.
In "change your mind" you can see how Steven kind of leads the other diamonds to do the same pattern of realization, just definetly quicker (mostly cause of lack of screen time???)
So yeah this kind of is the reason why I believe all diamond's Change of mind (or heart) requires them to opening their eyes on their expansionism and their class system, as they must realise that they're not as perfect as they thought. I hope that's it.. sorry if grammar sucks I'm not dumb I'm just Italian

She’s meant to be morally grey, did both good and bad, and I feel like people, including me, need to remember that we are looking back on who she was before, regression instead of progression.
Of course, she didn’t go and try to bring Bismuth back or Spinel (though I feel like that was more complicated than “just get her back from the garden”), but she did try and change herself, not to receive forgiveness, but to stop hurting her loved ones anymore.
I feel like her demonizing her Diamond side may have also been how she saw herself, not just the other Diamonds. She saw herself as this terrible coward who only knew how to run away because what happened, and was quite cold and apathetic.
I could be looking deeper than I should lol but, I feel like calling her the villain of the show when the other Diamonds literally destroyed planets (they’re not genocidal, confirmed by the Crew that species like humans are rare in the known universe.) and were the ones to enforce the rules that affected every gem including the Diamonds to be cruel and “perfect.”
But I do understand why, since what Pink did hits a LOT closer to home than what the other Diamonds did, though they hit close too because they were the ones that made Pink act and think the way she did.
ok basically in conclusion Diamonds are screwed up loOL

With spinelle, it seemed like pink was ready to move forward with her becoming "an adult", but spinelle was unwilling to change (huh...ironic)and since pink is still young she didn't know how to deal with those feelings. I've had those moments of me growing out of habits, but the people around me not, so I left them without much notice (yes, I'm a terrible person )

I understand that people can dislike Pink because there's a lot to dislike. But I feel it's very unfair that she gets so much more hate than other diamonds. In my opinion, she still was the most admirable among them, it's just that we get their stories told in the opposite order and I think it colours people's judgement a lot.
Diamonds are first introduced as something straight out of cosmic horror, then we gradually learn about their own drama which makes them into more of tragic villains than pure evil incomprehensible to the human mind, and finally, they got a full redemption arc, completed by how we see them in the "Future" putting in some very real work to make amends. And conveniently, since they're pretty much eternal, it's possible for them to actually fix a lot of the damage they'd done.
But Rose is first pictured pretty much as some Mother Goddess (partly because we learn about her from some very unreliable sources - namely people who idolised her one way or another), then she gets gradually dragged from her pedestal until we learn more and more disturbing things about her.
But once you put events in chronological order you cannot overlook the fact that Pink was the only diamond who recognised her abuse as something wrong completely on her own, the only one who saw the need for real change. It's especially impressive when you consider that gems didn't really have a concept of growth. She was doing something really unprecedented there.

The Volleyball Accident and Spinel’s Abandonment happened long time BEFORE her character development. About Spinel, she probably forgot her due to excruciating circumstances (*cough*GemWar*cough*).

Indeed, who am I to judge her? She messes up, I mess up, my neighbors mess up, EVERYONE messes up!
Furthermore, it’s established that Pink hated herself for everything bad that happened when she was around, and envied humanity for their ability to change and grow (this is one of the many reasons why she created Steven).

Just to preface this is long.
I never really gravitated towards Pink Diamond, but I now see there is a strong bias in regards to Pink. I am a firm believer in how exposure to all POV(s) gives a less subjective narrative to storytelling. And while I emphasize with so many characters, I simultaneously feeling like they should ALL be called on their BS. The difference with Pink, is a reversal of development while we're clearly able to see the aftermath of damage and precisely how many gems were affected in the process. But let's be clear, Pink has never had the opportunity to have "a Steven type" show her the way, thus allowing her to retrace her missteps and apologize for her mistakes. The OG Crystal Gems have had many blunders, Garnet having a wall up and softening over seasons, Amethyst taking it too far with Greg, Pearl having to come to terms with Steven's existence, her mistreatment of Amethyst, jealousy of Greg and fusing with Garnet solely out of selfishness, Bismuth's shattering weapon "Breaking Point". As well, both Garnet and Pearl being too self involved once its revealed Rose is Pink Diamond. All of these blunders we see through the eyes of Steven and his innocence/empathy allows him to give foresight on these situations AND give the Gems a reason to grow for the sake of Steven.
Steven has always been the apple of their eye. Whether its the Crystal Gems or the Diamonds, their approval has merely shifted from Rose/PD to Steven. Initially I thought Rose was manipulative, but honestly I see people are naturally in awe of Rose/PD. Steven, in a lot of ways, has mirrored his mother - taking on a leadership position while constantly evolving, taking on others pain and ultimately believing what you're doing is the right thing. Steven is now a literal teenager and based on what we have seen from Pink Diamond she has gone through an evolution herself. From being a child who had a “toy” like Spinel, to throwing tantrums to gain a colony. Pink was considered something like a Princess, she had a constant dichotomy between acting “like a Diamond” and doing what was expected of her while subjecting herself to the abuse of all the Diamonds above her; whilst still holding on to her playful nature and true belief that Earth didn’t need to be colonized. Pink naturally diverted from the authoritative position, she spoke to her Pearls as if they were people and not merely there to serve her. She in turn taught them how to be themselves, think for themselves and because she was the first to “humanize” them in a world of tyranny I believe that’s how they felt an attraction/admiration for Pink. I honestly have so much to say, ill probably make a video essay. But in sum, Pink was nurtured in an environment of tyranny and abuse while simultaneously being taught her status meant she should take what’s hers without question. While her nature was playful, curious, and empathetic. Essentially Pink is doing her best without guidance to unlearn who she was as a Diamond and embrace everyone as Rose. Through this she has unfortunately continued some cycles of abuse. Does her abuse negate the abuse she subjugated the Gems to, not at all but her backstory should add understanding as to why she operated in that manner. And she should have more of a pardon than all the Diamonds combined seeing how their actions are the only reason she had to operate in such a manner in the first place.

A lot of Pinks poor choices stemmed from her privilege as a diamond. It shaped her world view. She began to out grow that privilege when she became Rose., and began to interact with gems that had no privilege. This is when she started to grow. She was always a live in the moment impulsive personality and had a tendency not to look back.

"I didn't even know my Mom, but I do know she saw beauty in everything"
    -Steven Universe
Pink/Rose did some terrible things, there's no denying that. And Steven has a right to be angry with her and maybe even feel like he hates her. But even after all the mistakes she made, after all the bad decisions, after all the things that make it hard to like her when you really want to; we should all still try to see the beauty in Pink/Rose.
Maybe in Future we'll learn more about her and eventually understand her a bit better, and hopefully so will Steven
Yes she was immature and kind of bratty at times, but maybe that was because she was young. Which could be why she was so much smaller than the other Diamonds. She would try to be more mature and act like a Diamond, but others still wouldn't take her seriously and brush her off as a little kid. She probably felt the same was Steven did in Snow Day.
Yes she mistreated people, but she didn't know how else to act. She had been around that kind of behavior her whole life. She faked her shattering because she didn't know just how much the Diamonds loved her and understandably so. They mourned her for 6,000 years, and when they thought they finally got her back they just right back to the hurtful behavior that caused them to lose her in the first place.
That being said what happened with Spinel, impossible to justify.
When she hurt Volleyball that may have scared her into hiding her feelings by the time she got Pearl. Volleyball was right when she said "she didn't mean to", but while she didn't mean for it to happen it did happen and Volleyball just brushed it off for 8,000 years (with help from White Diamond of course). It may take time and she may never completely heal, but with Pearl and Steven by her side Volleyball will get better.
There were moments when she reminded me of a repressed princess, especially when we met the Pebbles (I'm sorry but those little guys just screamed fairytale princess). Pink had rules, expectations and if she strayed from them she was locked in a tower. Which is why she was so happy to become Rose Quartz and be treated like every other gem, as well being free to be herself. You said yourself that intense pressure makes a pink diamond, and she was as one of the Diamonds Pink was under a lot of pressure to be a leader and act like an adult. A kind of pressure that I think Steven is starting to feel, but that's another topic.
When she dated Greg, at the time Pearl may have been right when she told Greg that he was just a phase. But when he tried to fuse with Rose and talked to her, really talked to her it became more than that. She realized just how much they loved each other and Greg was able to help her finally do what she been trying to do since the beginning. He helped her change, a quality all Universe men seem to possess.
I hope in Future we'll learn more about what was going through Rose's head before she had Steven. She basically gave herself 9 months to live, a lot must have going on in her head. At that point maybe even she hoped or even knew that Steven would have to be better than her. I hope that someway, somehow Pink gets some sort of redemption, that she gets to let Steven know how sorry she is for everything he went through because of her, how proud she must be of him. That he was able to do in a short 14 years everything she wasn't able to do in 6,000, and that he's become everything she hoped and more.
sorry for the short essay, I was kinda in the zone 😊
    🌺

About her attitude towards Pearl's feelings, it might seem as though she kept the her hanging there, not too close, not too far. And this in itself would've horrible implications. But I think she was well aware of how Pearl felt, but PD being PD, she thought herself never able to be someone worthy of love, the Garnet brand at least. She was ok with playing around but not committing (even with the humans), least a Pink Pearl repeated itself or something. Also, there was Pearl's freedom on the table. I'm 99.9% sure Rose never could fathom the idea of her Pearl loving her on her own free will, surely it was her purpose keeping her like that, if Rose gave in to it, how free would Pearl really be? Basically there was some history there that kept them from going Garnet, and they kinda never realized/talked about it. Bc change does not come easy for gems.
Edit: And can we talk about WD keeping her P. Pearl frozen in time as a constant reminder of the consequences of PD's lack of self control? My, PD's character in and of itself is brilliant, imo

Pink diamond being (most likely) the metamorphic form of colorless diamond ties into Pink's character arc. She started out as a diamond under pressure, and changed as a result. The Gem she was at the start of her arc and the Gem she was at the end were two very different people. That's something we need to remember. Maybe she wanted to go back and right the wrongs she committed, but didn't know how. She may have spread negative propaganda about herself out of a sense of self-loathing that she developed (she seemed very adamant that Greg not consider her a real person). We still only have bits and pieces of her story, and we don't know how they all fit together. For my part, I'm staying my judgment until we have more of the missing pieces. Did Pink Diamond redeem herself? That remains to be seen.

  • @KimiKorn
    @KimiKorn 4 года назад +11

I think the relationship between pink and volleyball could've been worded better. It was more toxic than outright abusive but doesn't mean that pink pearl was any less hurt. I think PD is so hard for me to dislike because I see it so easy for people to see someone who's done bad things as irredeemable. PD is like a someone who has come from and abusive or toxic environment who has unintentionally continued that cycle until they've hurt someone they loved. Unfortunately it's hard to change from bad behaviors until you've had that big wake up call like Pink did after hurting her PPearl so much with her destructive scream. But we're also seeing that the person she changed into wasn't the best either. She became someone who ran from conflict so she wouldn't loose her temper again. This could be why she abandoned Bismuth and Spinel without explanation.
Sorry, now I'm rambling but only because I find pink/rose so interesting with every new episode focused on her and the new context it always brings to her past scenes! I feel she is a character that shouldn't be written off so simply 😊

I see pink diamond as a reformed villain, traumatized and rejecting their past. She was a villain, long time ago like other diamonds, but the loss of Volleyball, abuse from her sisters and colonization of Earth changed her outlook. She begun to view gems more like living beings instead of tools. After meeting Garnet, everything changed for her. She tried to be better but was ashamed of her past. Instead she decided to always look to the future, ultimately deciding to give birth to Steven. Her goal of the future also explains why she decided to abandon everyone else. She did not want for Steven to inherit her problems, but she herself did not realize that it was inevitable. Maybe, through her sacrifice and Steven, Pink/Rose hoped to change the minds of her sisters and mother.

I've said it before and i'll say it again. I don't think it was Pink's intension to leave Spinel for 6,000 years. She was leaving to start her first colony. She never expected to stay on Earth forever until she disguised herself as Rose Quartz and started the rebellion; eventually faking her shattering. Spinel was basically made to be Pink's toy to help burn off some of her excess energy away from Homeworld so she wouldn't cause trouble. She wouldn't have visited Spinel during the war because; A. There was a war and B. She didn't need to burn off her energy as she would have that need sorted by the fighting. After the Diamond attack Earth was cut off from the rest of the universe and the gems had no way of getting into space.
Secondly Pink was basically a child, from what we see of Rose she still had some childish moments. When it comes to children out of sight IS out of mind. They can have many toys but will always make a beeline for their favourite, only if given one of the others will they play with it.
When it comes to Volleyball this was a Pink who had not yet decided to change. She was mistreated and shoved aside by the other Diamonds with only her Pearl as company. Tantrums were often, again like a toddler, but she would never have seen anything wrong with her as everyone around her would call her perfect as she was a Diamond. Volleyball especially as she was her Pearl and was basically programmed to see Pink as a flawless goddess.
I think the incident which damaged Volleyball was Pink's first turning point. She had done something so bad that Volleyball would never recover. It's probably why White took Volleyball; to be a reminder of Pink's mistakes, hovering over her on display but out of reach.
This would have been as a shock to Pink as much as anyone and probably her first feeling of true regret and horror at what she'd done. In the flashback Steven had of the Hessonite colony that was a prank gone wrong it would have been more comedic and her guilt only came when Blue scolded her. In hurting Volleyball she would have felt guilt immediately as she realised that she had done something wrong. Thus started her journey of change and self-improvement.

Although on the other hand, even up until she gave up her form to have steven, she didn't trust anyone enough to let them know about Bismuth, Spinel, or her past.

I can understand why she did leave Spinel (Even though she could've done other things)
Just imagine begging for something you really wanted and finally getting it, you're overwhelmed with happiness and excitement, right? Now Spinel is a goofy gem, like Pink, she was made for friendship. Imagine telling a friendship gem that you don't wanna be friends anymore, heartbreaking. So the only reason she resorted to was leaving her. I can see that she didn't really think through most of her decisions but, this is Pink Diamond after all. She's not evil or a terrible gem, just misunderstood.

I think having an incredibly complicated character with good and bad traits is one of the most genuine depictions someone can have of the experience of growing up without one of your parents. While I personally cannot attest to this, some of my friends who are fans of the show who lost a parent very early in their life are essentially raised with second hand information. And just like with anyone, you find out your parent wasn't a perfect person. But they're not here to say or do anything about that anymore, they can't defend themselves or change or explain anything to you. They're just gone, and you have to live with what they left behind, good or bad.

I like Rose Character. She started out as an elitist Gem who was able to resolve that due to being dismissed by the other Diamonds as she found companionship in her pearls and other organic friends, unlike the other diamonds who thought Pearl's organic friends on home world were less than them. She goes to Earth and falls in love with humans and makes more character growth, and believes that Gems should have the ability to grow and change like humans do. However it wasn't until she met Greg when she finally fully shed her elitist ways as prior she treated humans as toys just s she did spinel, ironically still acting the same way that the other diamond acted. Nearing the end of her life she definitely became a better person, and i'm sure she never intended for Steven to clean up her mess (outside Bismuth), but the fact is it did happen and it affects her character. Also the galaxy warp was broken and she was an intergalactic criminal thought dead by the diamonds so going to get Spinel was impossible.

She wasn't purposefully malicious because her social standing and the other diamonds taught her a way of living that is percieved as being toxic. Which it is. We first see Rose as the leader of the rebellion, the one that we can trust because she is fighting for what she stands for and as the story goes we learn that she is not the great leader as we think, it shows tht everyone can make mistakes, Pink tried to change and she gained maturity but her own nature cannot be erased so easily. Rebecca did an amazing job with that character because she is not perfect because no one is, I love that we see all the aspect of who Rose/Pink was, her background, her selfishness and immaturity but also her good parts, she is not good neither bad, she made a lot of mistakes and that's what is maker her kind of 'human'

I don't think of it as a redemption reversed. Pink becoming Rose is more like a coming of age. Pink diamond was playful and adventurous yes, but she was also the youngest of the diamonds and immature. I agree that it was unfair of the other diamonds to treat pink like a child and there for enabling her temper tantrums, but the secrets that rose kept were because she was ashamed of her past. As youth we do things that we are ashamed of later in life, so as we mature we keep more and more of ourselves hidden from others in hopes that we can be excepted and loved.

I think she forgot about spinnel and that's why it hurts even more. Because she's so excited to be rose, she must have assumed that spinnel was able to change and moved on with her life like her. Since spinnel didn't get to experience earth and fight for what she believes, she's incapable of change until the news hits her. If she wanted to protect her by not involving her, then it can pass but the fact that she didn't even tried to see or ask pearl if she could find what happened to spinnel means she's forgotten.
