Blue and Yellow's "new" powers were foreshadowed in Legs from Here to Homeworld when they healed centipeetle/nephrite. Yellow stabilized her form and Blue effected her emotions. The fact that their powers work even without physical contact now means that they've been working on perfecting their powers

In my opinion, the diamonds also represent the social classes of the Middle Ages: White the kings, Yellow the military, Blue the diplomats (the clergy) and Pink the people.

I think that asking whether the Diamonds have redeemed themselves is a bit of a loaded question. I don't think that anyone earns forgiveness by meeting some measurable criteria. All that someone can do is try to be the kind of person who deserves forgiveness, and then either hope that they get forgiven or accept that they aren't forgiven.
I do believe that the Diamonds have become better people, and they're trying to undo the damage they did. But I don't believe Steven has fully forgiven them like he has with Peridot, Lapis, or Bismuth, largely because he's had less with which to empathize, and because they were the "big bads" of the original series. Whether the Diamonds can build a good relationship with Steven remains to be seen.

Steven never forgave the diamonds, an example of this is in the episode Homeworld Bound. When steven mind controls white he becomes afraid but then flashbacks to Change Your Mind, this is a sign that he never forgave the diamonds (especially white) because he tells himself that white should be afraid and tries to shatter her

Rebecca sugar used the diamonds to represent second chances. And how if you are given the proper amount of time you can learn to forgive someone of there actions. However Rebecca also used characters like “Bluebird” and sometimes “Jasper to show that not everyone wishes to seek forgiveness. Overall the diamonds ending was fitting for the show.

Like sure for _humans,_ but why would the leaders of an alien dictatorship agree? If they did why are they even dictators in the first place? Who made THEM?
Yeah the Diamonds relationship with each other was toxic but if they didn’t know anything else why would they be so easily swayed NOW?
Pink's death probably taught them empathy. So when Steven makes them aware of the error of their ways, they basically reason that "oh shit we've been causing Pink to feel this way for so long and we have been doing that to other life we conquer and destroy." Pain is an excellent teacher and Pink's staged death was probably the big catalyst that set things things in motion for them to eventually see that what they've been doing was wrong because they now see the pain and horror they caused to so many.

Also the diamonds have been unempathetic to all other gems, being born into their superiority roles since birth (wherever they came from) they have been shown to be empathetic, even if dysfunctional, amongst each other thou. The other diamonds were more or less their only real peers, gems were more like objects/tools for them. With that in mind the death of one of the only other 3 beings in the universe you relate with, seems pretty traumatic. We see that it had a big impact on all of them and I believe only another diamond (Steven in this case) would've been able to make them reflect on their way of living.
The least we can judge the impact Pinks death had on would be White. But from the final season 5 we learn that she too took part in their shared baths and activities before her shattering. So it can be assumed she changed too, probably went overboard, after the shattering.
It's not about redemption. It's about just being a better version of yourself. Like Endeavor from My Hero Academia.

I am really proud of the diamonds. At first, I was really sceptical and unsure how the diamonds could be redeemed. I even suspected Yellow for shattering Pink due to her rushing the trial. I of course misread it and it was merely cuz she didn't want to deal with the loss of her sister and to keep her tough image. Blue I felt the most sympathetic towards despite her being a tyrant; she was more sympathetic towards gems than yellow or white...but way less than Pink. I had hopes for Blue to turn around and help Steven (which came true). White...was always so mysterious and scary in the sense of being unknown. After her reveal though...yikes. She was terrifying. After she turned around though...she became such a diva which I love. She's like a grandma who's heart is deeply into theater and acting with feeling. I also find it a relief that even shattered gems can be put back together and healed again. And best of all, they treat Spinel as an equal! There were so many speculations that the diamonds were going to let history repeat itself and treat Spinel like they did Pink. And I am just so glad it turned out better than expected. Quick note: I love how Spinel is just so cute and precious! I loved how she got excited to control white and paired it with "Yes please." I just find that so darn cute! 😄💕

Red ram I’ve come to like WHITE as well but not to the point replacing BLUE as my favorite diamond. Peridot being my favorite homeworld gem and Amethyst being my favorite crystal gem, but Steven just became the most relatable character for me.

i don't think it's that. I'd say you're on the right track, but yellow and blue both represent the heart, but yellow represents the heart in a literal sense, as in the organ, while blue represents a metaphorical heart, as in emotions. Pink being soul doesn't seem right to me either, is the soul located in the stomach? it'd seem more to be that they represent fertility and birth, most of their powers relate to healing and creation, and Steven being half-human and the only gem to be literally born would suggest that.

Steven Universe in fact doesn't forgive, he helps them. Steven Universe doesn't forgive people who try to murder him, but he helps them when they realize or gave up on attacking. Rebecca stated out that Steven has never forgiven Spinel nor the Diamonds at a CBR interview. She stated out that Steven Universe never forgive them, but he helped them to make everything better and come into a conclusion that Pink is gone forever and it was best for them to change because of what they did to Steven. When Steven turns pink at Spinel and the other Diamonds, we can already tell that Steven hasn't forgive them.

Steven had to tell the diamonds to change they only changed to please him. Plus the diamonds actions are way worse then peridots.

@@Skybound808 John Friday I never mentioned about redemption, but if Steven forgives them. And first, it's easy you can't undo murder. When you murder someone you're a murderer forever especially since the Diamonds and Steven had revived the ones they've shattered. And for saying that Peridot and Lapis aren't redeemed, what I'm seeing is that you're comparing the Diamonds situation to Lapis' and Peridot's and not adding any information of why Lapis and Peridot aren't redeemed, I've also never mentioned about redemption. Lapis gave the Earth's Ocean back, Lapis and Peridot both betrayed a mission from Yellow, Lapis tries to hold back Jasper for Steven, and Peridot helped the crystal gems to be aware of the cluster. They both payed back Steven what they owe him while the Diamonds did not after hurting him.

Their reign left deep emotional scars in gems but you can't really "punish" them. Their powers are way too useful for gem society. This is the next best the thing, extreme community service and humanitarian missions.
That's a good way of looking at it.
Also they WANT to be a better person so, with all of that stuff above and the strange circumstances... it honestly makes more sense for SU to have dealt with the diamonds this way
I still love how all 3 are doing their best to be better, and their new abilities fit them.
White: Closed off and superior, the fact she would allow anyone else to take control is a big deal. We saw with Steven that she could get hurt by someone else. She is taking a huge step, and being vulnerable so she can apologize for what she did.
Blue: Silent and reserved, she tends to surround herself with things. She prefers to be in the middle of something. Her powers are to effect the emotions of others. She also spent time in the Rose Quartz bubble room to remember Pink. She never shattered them, because then she couldn't be surrounded by them. Her clouds allow others to be happy around her, and she's probably working on ways to help Gems after they leave the clouds.
Yellow: Stoic and busy, she always has something to keep her busy. Even when talking to others in the past she would be doing something. Being the head of the military of Homeworld would keep her busy. Always something to look at and something to keep in line. With all that gone she must have been getting restless. She also took a lot more initiative than the others. Yellow had to have spoken to one of the Crystal Gems to get the fusion experiments. Or just sent her Pearl to get them. Either way, she wanted to fix the damage done. This also feeds into her initial feelings when she found out Centipeedle was still loyal to Homeworld. That she and the others had unintentionally hurt their own number. Granted she didn't care at the time about the Crystal Gem Rebels, but she got there.
Are they redeemed? Not at this time. Unlike Peridot, Lapis and Bismuth, the Diamonds have a lot more that they need to atone for. A true redemption for the trio would come much later. Though I think a little more on their personal journeys would be amazing.
They are redeemed in my eyes because at least they are consistently trying to make a genuine change for the better.
Ms. Blue, Ms. Yellow, and Ms. White are all really trying. They are truthfully sorry for what they did, and Ms. Blue and Ms. Yellow are working on helping gems get both their physical forms and emotional states under control, and Ms. White is honestly trying to understand others. Surrounding themselves with other gems that used to be beneath them is their sign that they want to try to fix and rebuild what they have done. We all are struggling a little with it, but we need to give them a chance.
The diamonds are only fixing their mistakes. But none of the characters in the show have shown forgiveness toward the diamonds. Rather they only tolerate the diamonds.
I don’t know about you, but I think that the Diamonds are getting better. Or at least they’re trying.

I saw some people say that White's new power still suggests some smugness on her part, because who wouldn't want to be her? I can see that, but that doesn't mean it's not brave of her to open herself up that way.
Edit - to me, Yellow's stuff makes the most sense - she always has to have a project, so if she's going to do something good, she needs to see a result.
I mean White of way better than she was before but I think she will always be a LITTLE vain and on herself... I mean she IS the most powerful Diamond and all the Diamonds are godlike in power as is and she is the most powerful entity we've seen (not counting Kaiju Steven) so I can understand but she trying

I feel like the diamonds, including Pink, are representative of the aspects of health and wellbeing: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual, respectively. With Blue being emotional, Yellow being physical, White being mental (or psychological), and Pink being spiritual ("Spiritual wellbeing means the ability to experience and integrate meaning and purpose in life through a person's connectedness with self, others art, music, literature, nature, or a power greater than oneself." "Spiritual health creates a balance between physical, psychological and social aspects of human life.")
Steven Universe is about forgiveness. That's something that makes it very uncomfortable, especially in our time where forgiveness is not a value we embrace at any end of the political spectrum.

i would argue its not the system, its people who dont forgive, however these are genocidal dictators who for eons ravaged planets, shattering their own, killing sentient life and leaving planets formerly habitable husks of their former selves. imagine if you will, michael vick, but in space, and with a hitler mustache, and that is what the diamonds were originally portrayed to be. furthermore, forgiveness is good, however giving the diamonds a way out via having steven be pink diamind, and having them pull out new powers that magically fix the very problems rhey caused, is not good. its idealistic thinking, and robs justice from being implemented. i am the space lorax, and i speak for the countless lives and sentient species wiped from existence by the diamonds.
@@lumikkiharthri6658 I get what you're saying but this honestly was for the best. If the diamonds were shattered or imprisoned for centuries, Steven would have never gone back to normal and Beach City, and potentially the whole world would have been demolished.
With the diamonds actually making an effort to change for the better, the diamonds can now use their immense amount of power to help as many people as possible instead of hurting them. Plus, if a powerful evil alien force comes to do what the diamonds use to do it would be very useful to have the Diamonds on your side to fight against them.
If the diamonds resisted change and insisted on doing what they always did in the past then I would definitely agree with you. Until they decide to change their minds and go back to their dictator ways (which hopefully will never happen) they really should keep doing community service missions.
@@lumikkiharthri6658 you can't apply human moralisation to alien sentient rocks. Everything they did seemed perfectly good to them when they did it. Much as actions that we humans take that impact other lifeforms seem perfectly good to most of us but are actually horrific if you try and adopt the viewpoint of those beings. However, while you can't apply human moralisation to alien sentient rocks, you can apply the lessons of alien sentient rocks to humans. Because much like them, we have much less control over our actions than we think we do. Most of what we do arises from our subconscious and then is explained by the conscious propagandist rather that being the result of conscious choice that we feel like it is. We, like the diamonds are slaves to our nature.
Steven Universe wants you to grapple with something very difficult and bitter to swallow, the idea that you have to move on and forgive people, and it gets away with it even though you have scenes like where Garnet forgave Pearl that are very much against the modern Zeitgeist, because the bitter pill is enveloped in lessons about LGBTQ visibility and acceptance that we find much more sweet and agreeable. People are not neatly separated into good and bad people and taking that view does not help you.
Pink seems like the villain of the piece - but in all this, given her nature, the fact that she spent her existence striving to transcend her nature and grow up, that she actually took the point of view of the beings whose extermination fueled the growth of Gem life, and actually tried to resist, is the only reason any organic being on earth is alive in the time of Steven Universe. And the redemption arc of the diamonds, while not satisfying our atavistic desire for "justice," ended the destruction in a way that didn't compound it with more evil.
In the end, Steven Universe being about forgiveness makes it much more difficult and challenging than it appears on the surface.
@@redram6080 see, i still am in rhe camp that, at least for qhite, its an act. blue is rhe most easily redeemed as her actions are mostly under grief, and she didnt colonize as harshly as yellow, and yellow can still be redeemed, somewhat, but white? nah, she straight up stole the diamonds bodies when they started defecting. pink wasnt NEARLY as bad as the show portrays her. and yes, human moralization does apply to gems. they may be "programmed", but they start out as a clean slate, have critical thinking skills and dislay emotions. "i think, therefore i am"
I'm just happy that they showcased how the diamonds changed for the better instead of just saying that they changed. After all, seeing is believing.
I say yellow is the most redeemed out of all of them because she's repairing the physical damage that she and her fellow diamonds did to gems. I mean blue just made people feel bad along with her which isn't really that evil. White was just the dictator that gave yellow and blue the orders to do it.
And Blue:
1) was suffering. Immensely.
2) couldn’t always control it.

Welllll blue was so horrified and disgusted by Garnets fusion that she orders her court to shatter ruby on sight; without any kind of word from white. That’s more on blue, not white. Plus, blue most likely caused much of Pinks Trauma, knowing that she cared the most about pink while also assuming blues always had the tear powers not from Pinks Shattering but from her own personal depression (Serving white)
Yellow being the "most redeemed" is kind of fitting, because physical pain is the one that passes/heals the best with time. Either you don't carry lasting PHYSICAL injuries from physical abuse or you do, but either way it's the emotional trauma you have to fight with for years. Even if you sustained lasting physical injuries, it's rarely the case that they are chronic pain syndroms (keep physically hurting) but that you have to deal emotionally with the origin and the new bodily impaired reality you find yourself in.
The diamonds are a huge symbol is SU emotionly and literally.
Have the Diamonds fully redeemed themselves, not yet. But it's great seeing them happy after they weren't for so long. And it was pretty fun to see their new powers and how they changed. I love how they represented the personality types, stages of grief, types of abuse and finally different types of therapy in the end. They're just over all fun characters for me
I enjoyed seeing the three remaining Diamonds atone for their actions. It reminded me of how Pink Diamond herself atoned for her past by becoming the Rose Quartz we met in the first seasons. The difference being that Pink became a better person without doing the hard work of revisiting her past and making amends for her wrongdoings. In a way, that may have been all she could do at the time. Maybe we judge her too harshly for it, but the reality may have been that the Diamonds would never listen to her so long as she existed. The pain caused by her supposed shattering is what pushed them to listen to what Steven had to say, and see the error in their ways.
Yep Pink's death was the catalyst that ultimately led to them deciding to better themselves after meeting Steven. Gems always had a problem with understanding the concept of empathy. But going through painful experiences is oftentimes the best way to understand the pain you may be causing in others through your actions.
I love the diamonds as much as anyone but i think i prefer them as villains them heroes. Something just didn't feel right about it.

it felt really synthetic to me. WD's whole spiel about "judging anyone by their appearance is wrong" felt so put on and forced (much like the "equal lifeforms" in the movie) like a child reciting something that they're expected to say, rather than hold any stock in the words. I do agree with the video that atonement is possible, but the diamonds shouldn't be redeemed in my eyes. all those gems they shattered and tortured for aeons, the others that secretly grieved for them. That doesn't go away because they turn around and say "It's ok everyone! We're good gems now!"

@@halu959986 exactly. I feel blue and yellow are making leaps and bounds compared to white, but they were still 2 completely different bag of worms. The point still stands though that all 3 are still shatterers.

When it comes to White Diamond, I do think it took her the longest to redeem herself mainly because she was the cause of all the trouble in Steven Universe as a whole, and to be honest I don't think she earned redemption until the episode "I am my monster". Despite helping to heal the corrupted gems at the end of "change your mind", this was mainly because White Diamond realized that everything she knew was wrong, and she was open to trying something new. White Diamond didn't even feel genuine during the Steven Universe movie, but she did start to show her caring side during the episode "homeworld bound" after Steven tried to get revenge on White Diamond. I actually believed that White Diamond was truly sorry for what she put Steven Universe through during the episode "I am my monster" , and I felt she earned her redemption by genuinely trying to help Steven, though she still has work to do on improving as a person.
I feel that Yellow Diamond started her redemption during the episode "change your mind". While Yellow Diamond did genuinely love Pink Diamond and especially Blue Diamond, she was so focused on pleasing White Diamond that she dedicated her time to work rather than on those she loved. Yellow Diamond is possibly the diamond who conquered the most and caused the most physical damage, while keeping her feelings locked up inside. If anything, Yellow Diamond had the most to atone for. Her only redeeming qualities Yellow Diamond had were that she was there for Blue Diamond during her depression, and that she genuinely missed Pink Diamond. While Yellow Diamond was willing to make up for her hand in the corrupted gems, she was also quick to blame Pink Diamond for her part in the corrupted gems. Yellow Diamond didn't even hesitate to poof the crystal gems for defying the rules of the diamond authority or to lock up Stevonnie in the tower. While Steven did have a hand in redeeming Yellow Diamond during "change your mind", I don't think he could have done that without Blue Diamond. Yellow Diamond more or less ignored what Steven and Connie had to say, but was affected by what Blue Diamond said and did. Yellow didn't even want to hurt Blue, and vice versa. After Steven made Yellow Diamond realize that trying to wipe away flawed things could result in losing things that make you happy, Yellow Diamond finally started to let out her feelings, which helped Blue and Yellow to be close again. Afterwards during the Steven Universe movie, Yellow Diamond is shown to be more honest and more willing to show how she feels. Yellow Diamond even shows a genuine love for Steven and enjoyment of Spinel. By the time of the episode "homeworld bound", Yellow Diamond is helping shattered gems by choice, which is her path of atonement. Yellow Diamond also plans to help the cluster in the Earth. Yellow Diamond is even willing to put up with Steven lashing out at her, and ironically has to talk to Steven about controlling his temper. Yellow Diamond even shows genuine concern when Steven is not looking well. Yellow is also the first of the diamonds to try and help Steven in his monster form. Yellow Diamond does admit to the harm the diamonds have caused to Steven and does play her part in helping him.
As for my favorite diamond, Blue Diamond was already on the path to redemption since her debut episode "Steven's dream". Blue Diamond always seemed to have a soft spot for Pink Diamond, to the point where she would often bend the rules for her, but not break them. Ever since she lost Pink Diamond, Blue Diamond had been in a depression that lasted over 5000 years and was obsessed with preserving everything that belonged to Pink. Blue Diamond did take a liking to Greg since he could relate with losing a loved one (ironically Blue Diamond and Greg were missing the same person). Even though Blue Diamond ultimately kidnapped Greg, it wasn't for malicious reasons. At the time, Blue Diamond thought the Earth was on the verge of being destroyed, and while she did want to save Greg to preserve Pink Diamond's legacy, she also thought he was worth saving because she could understand how she felt. While Blue Diamond showed her darker side particularly in the episodes "the trial", and "reunited", it was ultimately due to the love she had for Pink Diamond. During the trial, despite clearly hating rose quartz, Blue Diamond was willing to give a fair trial and was even open to the possibility that a diamond was responsible for the loss of Pink Diamond. During "reunited" Blue Diamond only engaged in battle with the crystal gems because she noticed Steven, who outed himself to the diamonds as rose quartz. Even then, fighting the crystal gems didn't bring Blue Diamond any peace, as it made her miss Pink Diamond more. Blue Diamond may have been hard on Pink Diamond, maybe even abusive, but there was no doubt that Blue Diamond loved Pink Diamond very much. When she learned the truth about rose quartz and Pink Diamond being the same person, and Pink Diamond not being shattered, Blue Diamond was surprisingly forgiving of Pink. While enjoying Steven as himself, Blue Diamond still didn't understand for a time that Steven was his own person, not Pink Diamond, though she at one point made an effort to refer to him as Steven. Like with Pink Diamond, Blue Diamond did bend the rules for Steven but could not tolerate any rules being broken. However, due to the genuine love that Blue Diamond had for Pink Diamond, Steven was able to fully redeem Blue Diamond by making her realize that she not only hurt Pink, but drove her away, in which Blue Diamond wanted to make up for by helping Steven. Blue Diamond was the first of the diamonds to fully side Steven, and to truly refer to him as Steven. Blue Diamond also helped to redeem Yellow Diamond. During the Steven Universe movie, Blue Diamond does genuinely love Steven and wants to please him. She was even smiling at the idea of living on Earth with Steven. Blue Diamond also showed genuine care for Spinel. By the time of Steven Universe Future, Blue Diamond does appreciate Steven being in her life, and wants to genuinely spread happiness rather than sadness. Plus Blue Diamond gets the last new song in the Steven Universe franchise (for now). While Blue Diamond will always love and miss Pink Diamond more than anyone else, I do believe that out of the all the remaining diamonds, Blue Diamond loves Steven the most. Blue shows the most concern for Steven, especially in his monster form, and I feel she shows the most remorse for how she and the other diamonds are responsible for what Steven has been through. Blue Diamond was even willing to do whatever it takes to help Steven in the end.
In the end, I now feel that if the diamonds weren't on the path to redemption before Steven Universe Future, they are on that path now. I even feel that Pink Diamond is also redeemed. Pink Diamond may have made a lot of bad and irresponsible decisions, but she did at least one good thing: Pink Diamond gave birth to Steven Universe! 💙💛💓💗💎
Yeah, the thing with pink diamond is that we see her redemption on reverse, so she starts with "I'm the generous leader who rebelled against the empire because I see beauty in everything" and finishes with "I'm one of the most important beings in the galaxy and lesser beings are mere objects" to our eyes, when in reality she started by considering Volleyball or Spinel just objects that don't matter if they're broken or lost and slowly started seeing beauty and worth on everyone and everything, and then got the courage to fight against her abusers for what she believes is right. She ends up deciding that bridging gem-kind and humanity through Steven is more important than her own life.
She literally passed from "People are objects" to sacrificing herself for a greater good. It's not that she wasn't redeemed, is that she's always been and then we slowly from what she was redeemed, seeing the last thing shown as an accurate depiction and not her chronological actions.

Firstly, it was heavily hinted that Pink Diamond's friendship with volleyball pearl was genuine, with the injury Pink Diamond caused her being possibly an accident, and losing Volleyball being her 1st step to changing herself. Secondly, while it can be argued that diamonds were abusive to her, the diamonds did love Pink Diamond, even though they didn't show it enough to let Pink know that they loved her. Also, Pink Diamond didn't have the courage to stand up to the diamonds as herself, as she had to use her fake identity as rose quartz to rebel against the diamonds, which may or may not have been her only option. Next, Pink Diamond wasn't necessarily fighting for what was right. She may have wanted to prevent the destruction of the Earth, but Pink also wanted to selfishly free herself from the diamonds. Not to mention that her actions led to gems being shattered and corrupted, as well as human casualties. Finally, while Pink Diamond did create new life through Steven at the cost of her own existence, she did leave many things unresolved and ultimately left the fate of the earth up to chance.
@@StareachValcin I think most of these are pretty much up to interpretation, I still think she wanted to fight against homeworld because she thought earth was worth protecting, at least "Now we're only falling apart" gives me that impression. And about the "Issues" she left unsolved. She didn't know that any of that would happen, since apparently it's common knowledge to homeworld that the earth was destroyed, not one gem came to earth for millennia. The one that did, did it for the cluster, which Rose knew nothing about, and the cluster pretty much triggers the entire series.
Without it, peridot wouldn't have come, so neither would Jasper or the rubies. And without Jasper or the rubies Steven wouldn't even know about Pink diamond, much less discover that she was Rose quartz.
Had Steven not known about Pink diamond, he wouldn't have gone to Korea and never meet Blue diamond either.
And since Peridot wouldn't have seen Steven, Aquamarine woul most likely just kidnap 6 people at random, most likely far away from Steven.
The diamonds wouldn't try to wake up the cluster if it wasn't there, and since he doesn't meet the diamonds anything that happened with either White or Spinel wouldn't have happened.
I don't even know if the events from future would've happened, since Steven would've faced way less trauma.
So yeah, Rose didn't know about the one thing that triggers everything in the series. So she didn't leave earth's fate at chance. As far as she knew, earth had been safe for five thousand years.
She may have been directly involved in every issue, but she thought that the problems were over.

Remember, Yellow Diamond had the cluster made in order to destroy the earth as her way of coping with the loss of Pink Diamond by getting rid of things that belonged to Pink. Also the fact that Pink Diamond didn't know about the cluster almost led to the destruction of the Earth. If it wasn't for Steven befriending peridot, earth would have been destroyed by the cluster and Pink Diamond would have faked her shattering for nothing. Not to mention how cruel it was to leave Spinel alone for 6000 years. If it wasn't for Steven, it's possible that Spinel would have stayed in the garden for who knows how long. Pink Diamond left too much to chance.
The thing is, had she known about the cluster she would have prevented it from forming herself, and not just die and let it be somebody else's problem. Earth was her home and she would have protected it. The fact that someone wants to destroy the planet because of her doesn't inherently make her evil. It makes her directly guilty, yes, but if a puppy were to bite an intergalactic emperor after being hit, no one would blame the puppy if the emperor destroyed the planet because he got bitten.
You can see it as "had the puppy not bitten the emperor the planet would have survived, therefore the puppy is evil" but I think that you have to take into account that this allegorical puppy did not intend to destroy the planet and bite an evil emperor on purpose in order to do that
I don't know if the puppy allegory was a good idea, but the point stands. She did not mean for bad things to happen, bad things just happened. It's a bit twisted, but you can blame her instead of the people actually trying to destroy the planet, but even then, the fact she is to blame does not mean she is inherently evil.

SU really highlights the idea that there are two constants in relationships between an abuser and a victim:
1. People change, and many people will change for the better
2. You don’t need to forgive them for what they did wrong in the past, nor does the change erase what they did in the past
Sure the show encourages you to recognize the efforts that people can make to atone for their actions. A lot of the time, I’m inclined to be sympathetic towards people who 1, realize they’re wrong and 2, work towards becoming a better person. Some people aren’t, and that’s their right to not like them, but to erase the change people made is basically like saying “you’re always going to be x person, and once you do a bad thing you’ll never be good again.” That’s a very outdated mindset that an unfortunate amount of people are adopting, and I think SU is trying to illustrate how even the most stubborn, most set in their ways people can be convinced to become a better person, and that someone who is truly looking out for their welfare (Steven) will stop at nothing to convince them of the error of their ways and that their actions are actively hurting people.
They are not redeemed. But it's a start.
I love what Future did to Connies Mum. She really took Connies words about her beeing overprotective to heart.
And I love the Diamonds helping-power.
It showes that Powers can be either used for good or bad. It's on its owner.
While I can understand why some people don't want the Diamonds to be redeem but how does one exactly "punish" them for their war crimes? Give them the trials like they did with Steven when they thought he was Rose? It would be like if they try to trial Superman but the Diamonds are not Clark (would you think they would behave and accept any punishments given to them?).
I think this is better because if the Diamonds were shattered or imprisoned for thousands of years they wouldn't have been able to use their extremely useful powers to help people the way they are now. Plus its useful to have extremely powerful beings by your side if a powerful alien species decides to wage war against you.
personally i'm happy they could be redeemed. i like all the Diamonds as characters, and if Pink could do it, then so could they in theory. i do believe they should atone for the things they've done, but to me this IS their atonement. and they seem to understand that as well.
I was legit impressed with how much progress the Diamonds made in changing themselves and Gem kind for the better.

Back in the finale the whole arc was basically "Steven goes to homeworld, uses his now authority position to make the diamonds listen, so they go to Earth to fix all the curupted gems, then stop all the imperial BS"
And now on SU future they are working on redeeming themselves by being better people and helping gemkind heal, which is basically community service.

I think the point of the show was to more show the diamonds in the light of misunderstanding families than evil fascist dictators. White represents the toxic mother that wants to force her perceptions of perfection on her daughters. Blue and Yellow represent the compliant daughters of said mother but despite their compliance, their unhealthy family dynamic causes them both to develop unhealthy coping mechanisms, that as stated in the video we're anger and depression. Prink/Rose represents the daughter that finally decided she had enough and decided to go no contact, but still has the trauma she never dealt with and therefore like White, forces her issues on Steven.
Them being fascist dictators I think isn't meant to be literal. I think it's more mean to represent the concept in family dynamics that you may not realize the harm you might be doing to someone and the quantity of that harm.
This is the first time I've heard about the four temperaments and you pointed out that the diamonds represents each of them. Then I'm suddenly reminded by the MBTI. As you defined them one by one, it made sense to me.
Sanguine would be most likely the ExxP types and represented as Pink's personality,
Melancholic is the IxxP types which is very well shown by Blue's actions,
Choleric is the ExxJ types which is also very well shown by Yellow's behavior. A born leader,
And Lastly, Phlegmatic is the IxxJ types as seen in White's perspective that everything is made for a reason and everything is a part of a system.

I dont mind a diamond redemption but what they were missing was a journey on a path of redemption. All we got was bad guys just turned good and I know there were time skips but at the same time it still isnt that convincing. I was hoping to see the struggle and self questioning that steven went through.
Seeing as the Diamonds aren't the focus, I can understand why they weren't given arcs.

6 months late, but The Diamonds still killed a bunch of planets that probably had life on them to make colonies out of. Hard to fix that.
Its been stated by Sugar none of the planets they colonized had life like Earth does, no sentient life. Effectively they where killing off animals sure (We do that too. So if the diamonds are unforgivable because of that so are we) but not sentient life.
I love how they do address the problem it make sense that they actively trying to change. I always love villains to hero's and that they are understanding the wrongs.

Regardless of whether you think the Diamonds deserve punishment, they are helping repair the damage. It would seem selfish to stop them just to nurse a grudge. Are the Diamonds forgiven? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe they haven't fully forgiven themselves. We'll have to see if the scars fade with time.

After how we've discussed the representation of the characters and diamonds alike, I think it's safe to say that this show is nothing but an exaggerated display of human flaws. Things we all face from time to time, and the influence they can have on our decisions. We hurt people we love unintentionally because we ourselves are hurting, but only some of us will make amends and try to do whatever we can to make things right. All of these characters seem to embody some kind of fear, or trauma, or disorder, or just a feeling we've all felt before at one point. All the show is, is just a more complex and detailed version of inside out. That's why some can forgive and sympathize with the diamonds.. And some can't. We all know what they did was wrong, but we've done things that are incredibly wrong too. Like I said, this show is just what we would look like if you separated us into all of the individual parts that make up our personality. When everyone including Steven are able to finally come together.. Finally move past everything.. We've all become one whole person again.
I mean yeah, the diamonds are doing their best to make up for the gems, but that still doesn't excuse their intergalactic genocide of who knows how many organic species and their planets.
Nothing they do will ever excuse what they have done in the past but at least they are trying to make a better future for as many gems as possible.
7:42 The scene in Homeworld Bound where Steven tried to shatter White Diamond is quite important because it shows that he never really forgave the diamonds for what they did. So yeah, they were redeemed, but that doesn't mean they were ever forgiven.

I think the new information that being shattered is not permanent in the show, makes the main reason why they’re irredeemable (Because they shattered so many gems) backfire, and when you step back and look at it in a different non permanent way, like all the gems were just bubbled, it’s definitely easier to defend them now, and not just from there grieving experiences.

Since you mentioned rubies and sapphires technically being the same gem in real life, I wanted to share that I recently came up with the theory that rubies as a whole were a failed attempt at making sapphires. They're somewhat blockheaded and can't see the future at all. Maybe the entire cut were seen as defective or off coloured sapphires at first but they kept them around because it would have been a waste of resources to eliminate all of them and they found a new use for them as body guards
If you look at Ruby and Sapphire, you'll notice they're pretty similar in size and shape. The biggest difference is Sapphires hair and that she only has one eye

With Era 3 being focused on healing rather than conquest, home world doesn’t colonies worlds to birth new gems. So in order to maintain a the population, yellow is going about fixing the gems that she and her family broke. Kind of makes it seem like a better government than we have now where they try to help the people they wronged instead of sweeping it under the rug

I don't think that we should be forgiving the Diamonds...completely.
They are a good demonstration that you can be reflective on your own actions, and work to be a better person for it. We only have seen these small changes because SUF was focused on Steven's trauma. And with such a short series, we don't have the chance to explore any potential "redemption arc" like we do with Lapis and Peridot.
But we can acknowledge that these giant, malicious evils were mislead in the details, acted waaaay out of base with their actions, and not only have they realised what they did wrong, they are working to resolve their own issues and use the lessons they have learned about themselves to assist others. We can acknowledge that the Diamonds are working really hard to be better people/gems/leaders.
We can also acknowledge that they're not completely ready for forgiveness from everyone yet. Because that is also a perfect example on how everyone else deals with their own trauma. One person might be able to wave their hand and go "you've changed! all is forgiven!", where someone else will go "yeah. you've changed, but I'm not ready to forgive you for the hurt you've given me and I might never be". Because both of those are real examples of working through personal trauma too.
I mean, hell! How many people who follow the MCU have forgiven Loki? That's a whole other kettle of fish, but it's similar. We can acknowledge a bad person did bad things, and see how they've changed, but some still don't like him.

However fragmented homeworld is, you can expect it 10 times worse on other worlds they didnt value as essential other than being spawning grounds. They can't hit the reset button on THAT.
