  • What Is Spinal Compression Fracture? Dr Arun L Naik explores osteoporotic spinal fractures in this video. Spinal compression fracture symptoms are back pain and numbness in limbs. Spinal compression fracture causes are osteoporosis and trauma. Treatment of Spinal compression fracture is by medications and surgery. Spinal compression fracture relief depends upon the extent of fracture. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty procedures are done to correct the fractures. The type of fracture in the back bone that is caused by osteoporosis is usually called as a compression fracture. These compression fractures can occur in vertebrae anywhere in the back bone , but they are seen most commonly in the lower thoracic vertebrae (e.g. T10, T11, T12). Next location is upper lumbar segments as well, such as L1.A spinal fracture due to osteoporosis (weak bones) is usually called as a compression fracture. Also called as a vertebral fracture, osteoporotic fracture, or wedge fracture.
What are the Compression Fracture Symptoms
How common is a Spinal Fracture
Vertebral fractures due to osteoporosis are common. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 25% of all postmenopausal women have had a vertebral compression fracture. Compression fracture can also be due to a Trauma to the spinal vertebrae from a fall, a forceful jump or a traffic accident in younger people. One more reason for a spinal fracture is Some types of cancer. Examples are spinal plasmacytoma, hemangioma or a metastatic tumor from some other cancers in the body.
What is the treatment of CF
Treatment of a spinal fracture caused by osteoporosis is usually two-pronged, one treatment of the fracture, and two treatment of the underlying osteoporosis that led to the fracture.

Some tips to prevent an OP.
    1. Calcium rich healthy diet. milk, cheese and other dairy foods are very rich in calcium. Daily recommended dose of calcium is 1-1.5 gram depending on your age and height. The remaining will come from diet such as green leafy vegetables - such as spinach, soya drinks with added calcium, fortified bread and fish such as sardines. Oranges kiwi fruit mulberries guava papaya and passion fruit. One orange gives 40-60 mg of calcium depending upon the variety.
    2. Sun exposure : bcs you need sunlight to activate your vitamin D in the body.
    3. Avoid smoking : Smoking is a known risk factor for op.
    4. Limit alcohol: Like smoking drinking excess alcohol reduces absorption of calcium from stomach and deposition in to bones.
    5. Limit caffeine : Drinking more than 6 cups of coffee is shown to cause op in many studies. So limit your caffeine.
    6. Do regular weight-bearing exercise. It is shown that performing daily exercises is essential to keep your bones in perfect shape as you age.

I have two t 6/7 severe wedge fractures that I didn’t know about until 5 months later
They were present on X-ray in March but not mentioned until I had a Ct scan on my gallbladder in august
The Ct revealed they weee present in March on X-ray
The doctor that saw that X-ray must of been blind
The X-ray was for a chest infection but still ok excuse that it was noticed
We are now Dec and I’m still in allot of pain and now also my lower back is burning ? I just can’t find sitting comfortably at all
Is there a brace or something I can wear to keep my posture upright
I’m in the uk so out nhs is not the best and I can’t get to see a rheumatologist untill Jan for my osteoporosis and now kyphosis which I suspect is from the fractures as I didn’t have kyphosis early last yr

How does "relative youth" factor in? I was just diagnosed with "very very severe" osteoporosis, after a year of "one thing after another" with my back. No one suggested osteoporosis, even though I had injured my back in 2019, followed by a compression fracture in my wrist--put my hand down to protect my back, and, I did, (protect my back,) still no one hinted at it. I have now officially lost at least 1 1/2" in height, 5/8" of that since last May. I am starting to think, now that I have had the DEXA scan (only because my husband did fracture two vertebrae, and he asked for a bone scan, was found to be officially osteoporitic at age 60, so he pushed me to get a scan too, but even his doctor didn't suggest osteoporosis,) that I've had at least one fracture, and maybe two. (My lumbar t score was -4.6, versus his -2.9, and I DO pursue exercise that apparently were very ill advised for someone with weak bones.) I've definitely paid a price, and have absolutely concluded I can't twist, no running (at least, not on pavement,) I lift with my legs for sure. Still haven't heard from my PCP (in whom my trust is weakened,) just...am disheartened because I'm at this place at age 61 even though I have been doing all the preventative things since I was a teenager, trying to maintain a healthy weight. (I do take thyroid though, suspect that's the accelerant, and again, no one even hinted that there was a connection.) Still, even though I have lost ground this year because I've had so much pain, and because I've hurt myself while I was exercising, I'm hoping that I'm still stronger than...an 80 year old? That my relatively greater muscle mass has been...compensating? This doctor said bed rest...I did rest from "working out" but I never stopped walking...and it did hurt, I felt like a little old lady, pain radiated through my whole pelvis and started to affect my leg, but I kept walking, and I hope that's because I was/am strong, not because I'm stupid?

      Hi
Iv just read your story and was wondering how your getting on have you had anymore help since
The dr here that is doing the video doesn’t seem to answer anyone as far as I can see
Like you I’m in allot of pain
      I have 2 severe wedge fracture at t 6/7
I wasn’t told for 5 months that I had them
I do have osteoarthritis and have had it since 2015 and unfortunately I didn’t take my vit d or alendrate acid
I have only been taking it for a few weeks but the bottom of my back has started burning ?
I’m in the uk and still waiting to see the rheumatologist which isn’t u til Jan next yr
      Our nhs is terrible
I don’t know what excersise to do for the best
I also have severe emphysema so I was doing breathing exercises and excersise to help strengthen my lungs and ones like press up on the wall
I think thes have slowed my healing process?
What advise have you been given have you had any good advise yet and are you feeling any better
Your message sounded how I feel now but I do hope things have looked up for you now

    • @cindylutz7442

@shazben9822 Wow, thanks for checking in! I usually figure no one even reads my lengthy responses, so, thanks for that, and for sharing a bit of your story. I am sorry that we are experiencing similar things...oh but I guess you don't know that yet. 😜
It can take a long time to get appointments here (I'm in Oregon, USA) too, especially with specialists, as I've learned this year. January is right around the corner, now. Hopefully you'll get some direction?
I have had quite a year, actually. Highlights include:
Losing another inch in height (for 3 inches total now;)
Learning I also have fractures at T6 and 7, and I'm 99% sure a new one at T8, and at L 1, (maybe also T 11 and 12.) Well, I've lost so much height, there pretty much had to be fractures, but it still took a long time to discover them, and I had to push even for x-rays.
I saw an endocrinologist finally in August who said don't bother with Fosamax, you need Evenity, only to have insurance deny it. Endo says he wants to appeal, but failing that, he wants me on Reclast. Second visit (where he said this,) was three weeks ago, and I've heard nothing since. My guess is I've fallen through their cracks, too. (He's super busy, and he's in a practice focusing on diabetes, so...:-/.) Whatever, I'm in medication limbo and don't really care...yet. I have my next DEXA in early January, figure I will get to see what the natural route has done. I have definitely made some changes, would just be nice to know if these things (supplements, vibration plate, being more consistent with strength training, dealing with hut issues I didn't know I had,) made a difference, or not. If my scores are worse, I'll push for the drugs, even Reclast, which I'm not excited about. If I'm not worse, or even a bit better...yay!
But candidly, I don't feel better. I can't say it's my bones, though, who knows? I apparently can fracture without much effort. But it could be just the general realignment of muscles, tendons--everything. My ribs are now resting on my hips/pelvis. Even my ribs feel compressed--not sure if the tenderness and sense of caving in on myself will diminish with time...well, it has, actually, I've definitely gotten used to it, it's not as distressing as it was...or if this is just my life now. My upper back hurts after maybe 15 minutes of standing (walking, working,) and if I don't rest it frequently, it will become excruciating. My lower back kind of took a back seat for awhile, but it's started to reassert itself, too. Some of this could be related to the aquatherapy I recently started. It takes so much work to achieve and maintain "neutral posture" while also trying not to float. It otherwise feels good, but I'm definitely sore. I also just started a resistance band workout...just seemed like a good idea...and though I have been working out with ten pound dumbbells (I'm afraid to go much higher because they do put stress on my back,) the band has worked me. But I was already at a place of "every part of my back hurts pretty much all the time," which was not the case a year ago at this time.
But that doesn't mean it can't get better! I'm hoping to try out a gym called Starting Strength--it's a franchise, all kinds of people go (all doing the same things.) Some claim they've reversed osteoporosis. I have a 75 year old friend who's been going there; she says her lower back pain is gone. I had a preview--the trainer definitely focused on my posture more than another trainer I tried this year, so...maybe if I lift correctly, I really will get stronger? I have been babying my back/core, I got one fracture, I know, while doing a workout video with 2 pound weights--gah! But I do think weak muscles just makes everything harder. So we'll see.
Post what you find out from the rheumatologist?
      Take care!

I am questioned by Paion Management as if I have to beg for pain ,meds. I tell them look at the MRI full spine and CT This has to change need of laws reviewed. Hi Can you help me, I have a crush injury in my spine with a central L1 bone loss of 80%, it wasn't immobilised and hasn't healed after 13 months no difference on two MRI scans 3 months apart. I am in terrible pain and I think it is unstable. I had a serious accident that caused it, but I have been refused treatment due to osteoporosis. I have had all the tests for osteoporosis and they are negative. Prior to the fall I was weight lifting and cycling/running/swimming. I have no health issues, normally take no meds. What can I do, I'm losing my life.

Epidural injections will give you some relief. I have L1 fracture. I take Vit D3 and herbs for pain/inflammation. I see chiropractor weekly. My spine is now crooked, scoliosis by medical terminology, some days the pain is unbearable if I overdo it, then rest two days. Also use a back elastic belt during any strenuous activity or yard work. Height went from 5’81/2” to 5’7”. If I let it get to me I get depressed, I must keep going so I push myself, sometimes I don’t know when to quit till it’s done, then I suffer badly. I’m a widow, nobody cares, nobody listens, no one understands the pain we have unless, like you…you know.
