I just watched a video of Adele singing and suddenly noticed her use of hand gestures. It made think so much I stopped the video and here I am. Thanks for your demonstration, I see how important it is now. I do remember noticing Dusty Springfield as a user of gestures way back but never really thought about it until now..
I now sing OK but expressions are just not there! I even teach a little vocal technique and do that part well. I had the idea for years that during classical music singing you repress expression and I've taken that way too far. I now am willing to try a few hand movements as well as eyebrows and looking in different directions for characters, etc. You are EXCELLENT! If I can do a fraction of what you do! Thanks for the video. I plan to sing hymns for a small audience so I'll have to balance between no expression and too much but right now its not a problem. I'm dead face! When I talk I'm expressive, so I should be able to change it! I will have problems focusing on singing technique and expression at the same time, but I'll just have to deal with it! More practice. Any hints appreciated! Also, its a lot tougher for a guy, ladies can so easily be transparent talking and singing. Some ladies have tons of expression talking about anything, even boring stuff! I gotta get there!
It's useful to bear in mind how appropriate gestures and facial expressions are. If you are singing something from Joseph, go for it. If you're singing Sondheim, not so much. Also, I completely disagree with your last point. Don't plan when you are going to do what. If you want to be believeable and find the "truth" in the song, let the song do the work for you and just go with what feels right. Don't block. xxx
I'm so glad that you find them helpful. I haven't uploaded in a long time because I'm a foster mom to large sibling groups and I simply don't have time. Maybe one day I'll come back to this, but I really am glad that these little tips have been helpful
My mother always says I sing good but my facial expressions were bad and I always looked uncomfortable on stage. so this kind of helped thanks
Same here!!Both my brother and mother say the same thing.I seem to have trouble with making proper facial expressions.
When I sing I have to close my eyes and I think it’s weird.
Same.
Me too!! By the way hi army
I look hideous I don't know what to do lol

Would you agree that making these small adjustments in your facial expressions can change the timbre of your voice slightly?
May I know what title is the song you're singing?
