      Caleb Voisine-Addis You know what though, they’re probably still there underneath all the coating he did. They just disappeared since those layers became level with the lettering. So it’s not completely destroyed.

    • @cvoisineaddis
      @cvoisineaddis 6 лет назад +1

      For the most part, you're right, though you can see he started to sand into the "E". Still unfortunate it's not visible.

    Gotta hand it to Bilt Hamber, They've thought up some pretty spectacular rust removing products. If you use DEOX-C with hot water it strips rust off quicker and more thoroughly than any other stuff I've tried.
    When I started my Ford Capri restoration I even looked into building an 8" deep "bath" using railway sleepers and tarpaulin. The idea was to sit the shell in DEOX-C so I could get every trace of rust out of the sills and floor seams........ Unfortunately, Due mainly to the size of the car it would have worked out ridiculously expensive, So in the end I just sand blasted it and painted DEOX-GEL into every area I could get to.

    One last observation - if this were to ever be used for storing fuel again, I'd suggest sealing the inside surface of the tank. No telling what crud is left behind inside. In the states it's common to use something like POR-15 Fuel Tank Sealer for sealing/relining old gas tanks.

The only item I will caution him about is the paint powder showing on the arms. That means it's in the air, also. Lungs are susceptible. Took me about 40 minutes to watch because of back tracking, but enjoyed every minute. Thanks.

      Legally across the USA, any current tanks need to be colored. Red for Gasoline, Yellow for Diesel, and blue for Kerosene, it would be illegal for him to fill that tank with gasoline if he did not paint it red. It would be really cool to see the original blue paint though!

    I enjoy watching your efforts. Regarding the pitting, We could only get a vague Idea of how thick the metal was in the pitted areas.Depending in the thickness, I might have gone through the effort of tinning with lead, brass, or an exotic. If I really wanted to save the embossing. I think I would have gone with a more fine brass screen as well. Thank you for the show!

      Hey, Thanks for the comment. Haha yeah the table top is holding up surprisingly well for the stuff that i throw at it haha. They are fantastic brushes for just about everything the bristles are perfect for lathering and getting into all the nooks and crannies, I have a set just for detailing and another set for general purpose mucky jobs like cleaning this fuel can.

      With all the material taken off, and the embossed lettering sanded down, I'm surprised there weren't a bunch of holes in the can. Nice job though. I think the only thing that will be good for is a beautiful show piece. The other thing you could have done to keep it closer to the original would be to have cut a section out containing the lettering, clean up the rest of the can, clean the lettering separately, and then welded it back in place. If that were some sort of embossing on the body of a car, that's exactly what would have been done. RRC, kudos to you for all the time and patience to do this.

    Incredible work and Amazing how a common petrol can from the 50's is like a work of art compared to what we have nowadays ...
