Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.
I haven't seen anyone rebuild a caliper in a long time. Rebuilt caliper works as well as a new one and you know it's right doing it yourself, Nice job.

You can tell he really cares about the quality of his work too. He really gave this caliper some special treatment. Nothing overlooked or half-assed. The decal work he added was an especially nice touch. A superb restoration hands down.
Nope Beau, one left and one right green 50 HP caliper make 100 HP together; for it's the front axle caliper pair, it makes that little Miata an AWD also in the same go ...
i guess the paint is some kind of heat resistant. so it gets baked in while braking. normally you do that if the paint is half dry. but i did it also very late. no problem with that.
No apologies here required or received. This is almost emotional to watch and so satisfying. Some people rush too quickly through the process, but you show us. Bravo!
Watching you disassemble everything answered an Integrated Bellows question I was having. Specifically with the front brake calipers. Thank you very much.
One of the best videos (of any kind) I've seen. Great job. Changed my mk2 discs & pads recently. Cleaned them up but they didn't look as good as yours. Well done 👍👍👍👌

I agree, dust seal are a nightmare to put on. My way is to put the dust seal on the caliper first then push the piston in and blow the piston using a hand pump so the seal will seat on the piston, proper lubrication is the key.
I tell you, it really is a pleasure to watch a pro at work, and do the job properly. I was a little worried when you used vice grips to remove the bleed nipple etc but was happy to see a ring spanner for the replacement of the new one! As a professional powder coater I can tell you after blasting those weren't even close enough to being clean enough to coat. All the dark in the gray areas is corrosion. When I blast that part will look silvery and uniform. Powder coating, we would have removed the vinyl after a partial cure. and then a full cure to seal the edges.
Clear won't stop it from peeling it most likely will make it lift the green paint didn't like the black single part paint also pulling tape on a single stage paint after it is completely cured gives it a better chance of pulling up paint
I have two observations: 1. After you laid the sticker you should have used primer again (really light colors or neon colors need a white base) 2. after the green paint, before drying you should have removed the sticker and then clear coat everything. You can see in the video that the surrounding paint tends to peal off. Imagine that after a while and some heat, when you will try to clean the caliper with a brush or a sponge. Otherwise a great project with amazing results. Keep up the good work and keep posting ^_^
I agree that he should remove stickers immediately after applying paint! Though temperature resistant clear coat may be hard to find in some regions (seriously) ... BUT! it would be great to apply it as well.
Hi, Thanks for your comment. The reason this sticker removal didn't go as smooth as planned is because i messed up a little and built the paint up too much around the sticker making the edges a bit harder to peel up but usually it works a treat and your left with a lovely deep looking logo.
Good job on the project. I recently did this myself during the x-mas holidays on my car. Just remember when fitting the seals and outer dust cap to do a few tests using the compressed air to check on the movement of the piston as in moves in and out of the cylinder. I'm not sure what grease packet you used but I'd only use brake fluid to grease the internal parts with the seals.
Wow, the caliper‘s look amazing! Great Job! I‘m very impressed how you‘ve done the font! Maybe i had a little useful tip, how to install the cuff much easier. If you put the cuff on the piston and slip it down to the end of the piston. So you could handle the cuff-end with on the piston easily and slide it in the cuff-nut. After the nut is round on in the nut, slide the piston back into the caliper. It‘s much more safe and comfortable!
OH MY GOD... I can't believe this, I'm getting more and more addicted to this channel XD Brutally feeds my hunger for perfection PS - speaking of perfectionism :D I would have tear out the mx-5 writing while the green varnish was still half fresh and soft... so it would not risk to break around the edges while tearing! And maybe, a spray of glossy coat on the whole structure would have made it jet black, and fill out the "hole" of the writing. It would have looked SOOOOO factory made (drooling)
Hey, Thanks for the tip. I didn't remove the paint from the carrier as there are stainless steel shims that go on it so the brake pads will never actually be in contact with the painted surface.
@@RRCRestoration Yes, I understand. But the thickness of the paint may delete that little slack that the pads and shimms need to work properly. I am a mazda mechanic and that is my small advise. I dont want to be too obtrusive. That's why that surface is flat and always cleaned.

You don't have to leave tha pistons in when you're blasting because it doesn't matter if you scratch the machined surfice in the cylinder since the piston doesn't touch it. The seal is the only thing that will cause a leak. Although you don't want to get blasting sand in the bleeding canals. I usualy just put something in the bottom of the cylinder to block the sand. I have a suggestion. When using paint masks. Remove them after the paint has started to set up but before the paint is dry. This well give you nice soft edges with less risk of pulling the paint up. The masks will also be MUCH easier to peel off.
I've just done mine in a similar fashion to you and I really enjoyed it. Getting the new piston in was a bit tricky but other than that, it's satisfying as hell.
I did the same for my MK3.5. Unfortunately i didn't know about the importance of primer at that time so I will have to redo this at some point. You can actually use vinyl stickers and they hold without any problems. There are 2 other things to consider. You most probably need to apply clearcoat. Also check that clearcoat is compatible with your paint before applying it or test it somewhere else (ask me how I know..). Second thing is if you plan to take your car to a track your calipers will get black. I painted both front and rear in red color and after 4 years i have red calipers in in the back and black in the front. Just something to keep in mind.
Near perfect job. With that level of restoration, the pitted bolt heads and jacked up bleeder valve should have been replaced. And what, no bleeder valve cap? It's all about the details. I look forward to you taking parts like this to the next level. Powder coating is something I think you would enjoy.
the grease is for lubricating the sliding pins and the rubber guides to make them go in easier, it shouldn't be used on the piston nor anywhere in the cylinder as it may react with the brake fluid and/or affect its propperties

The rest of your car better be getting just as much love as that caliper
WOW - just wow - incredible work
Thank you so much :)
Охрененно,шедеврально,сколько работы,это просто жесть.Но итог работы того стоит!!! Мастер просто супер спец!!!
Near perfect job. With that level of restoration, the pitted bolt heads and jacked up bleeder valve should have been replaced. And what, no bleeder valve cap? It's all about the details. I look forward to you taking parts like this to the next level. Powder coating is something I think you would enjoy.
If you wanna clean the rust off calipers just drop them in some "evaporust" for 2 days .they'll come out like new...no labour required
That caliper looked like you found it magnet fishing lol top work on the resto very satisfying.
WOW.... WONDERFULL WORK!!!!
Thanks for share it.
Hello from Brazil mate!
Cool never knew how to pop out that piston... well done
this was so satisfying to watch
Loved the video , your meticulous and nice clean working area ,a pleasure to watch
Thank you very much :)
the grease is for lubricating the sliding pins and the rubber guides to make them go in easier, it shouldn't be used on the piston nor anywhere in the cylinder as it may react with the brake fluid and/or affect its propperties
Hey thanks for the comment. The red rubber grease is designed for brake assembly and is 100% brake fluid compatible ;)
i love the detailed closeups... great camerawork!!
Thank you, I try my best :)
