      We definitely would have gotten those characters if this game had been better received. But because it wasn't, there will never be a sequel with an expanded roster. I would have loved to personally have seen Ike, as he has my favorite FE story

      Crazy thing is there is a development build of them in game along with the boss characters being playable. The plan was for a season pass 2 and along with a chapter would come the free update to add the boss characters. Unfortunately the game didn't do good enough in terms of sales and they canceled it. I can't find the video anymore but it was extremely early but it did show Roy and Ike. Ugh my heart ) :
      . Ps there was also to be a challenge mode added like hyrule warriors but expanded on. Would have made some great content end game when you have all characters max leveled and weapons/skills done. You can see this also when it comes to hyrule warriors age of calamity and fire emblem warriors three houses how both games are scaled down compared to both. Trying to go for a more half and half to audience's.

    Also, I do concur about the anime. I've been pushing for Fire Emblem to make a dedicated anime series amd one done like Naruto and DragonBall where they start from the very beginning (Shadow Dragon to Three Houses) and gradually pairing canonical couples and adding their children to the adventure and watch them grow like we show with Goku/Gohan and Minato/Naruto/Boruto all while keeping on with the story.

      @@GarbenTheBerserker And rightly so, since it did ignore the existence of most of the franchise.
      But unlike Zelda fans, FE fans actually bought it. For the sake if simplicity, let's assume every single person who bought both games is a franchise fan. Less than 14% of all Zelda fans (3 million of over 21 million in 2020) bought Age of Calamity, and much less for Hyrule Warriors. Roughly half of FE fans (1 million of roughly 2 million in 2017) bought FE Warriors. The numbers for Persona 5 Strikers, btw, convert to about 43% (1.3 million of 3 million).
      The difference in attitude is simple. Koei respected Zelda, while Zelda fans mostly snubbed their nose at the musou genre. FE fans actually wanted a Warriors game, but also wanted FE to be treated with the same level of respect (that it most certainly didn't receive).

    How iconic considering I JUST got through writing a blog in Fire Emblem Amino specifically why I would want a Fire Emblem Warriors 2 lol. However it is a massive blog so I will only super cut the certain things but before that can I just say that I was really happy that this game had an English dub? I was literally crying when I found out that nearly all the voice actors from each respective game pretty much came back with the exception of certain characters but for the most part, everyone did a fine job and with this, Persona 5 Strikers and Age of Calamity, we get English dubs again at least for a while. Not to mention even I enjoyed the use of the weapon triangle system implemented from the games in a Warrior's fashion because it makes sense seeing that is how fire emblem rolls and the best thing about this game is literally the support conversations. Seriously there's plenty of supports in this game that make me go that's adorable that's cute I like that conversation that character actually pointed out that other characters massive flaw and finally Lyn slapping Takumi.........life is good. Sadly there is the shortcomings of the game which ironically I mention those in my blog as well especially when it came to the clones. They could have easily made everyone unique even with the same weapon especially since apparently in samurai Warriors 5 they are gonna make the characters have different move sets despite having the same weapon so why didn't they do this for fire emblem Warriors is beyond me. Then there's the fact that the story is just not that good and the 2 original characters are literally the exact same character except with a gender swap so I mentioned that maybe they can do one story where the characters do get sent there but they have to fight a common enemy or what you say: Have the characters already be in that particular world and develop them naturally through that scenario and then another story mode that I just thought up have a created character that you make interact with the characters build supports with them and this is someone that also suggested this do what 3 houses did and have your character marry them and get a CG ending. Speaking of 3 houses they could have easily had Byleth/Beleth playable especially since KT did develop Three Houses and if not, then in a sequel, MAKE THEM ALONG WITH THE HOUSE LEADERS BE PLAYABLE!!!! If Lianshi could be reincarnated as a plant dude in Age of Calamity then Wang Yuanji should be reincarnated as Edelgard in a Warriors game and yeah History Mode is a massive chore and I really don't like playing through it. This was a very well done review and while Fire emblem Warriors definitely has it's issues, at least it got you into the series and I did hear from some who really like this game so...... I said it before and I'll say it again KT make a Fire Emblem Warriors 2 and for the love of God, GIVE ROBIN TAKAKAGE'S MOVESET!!!!!! Clears throat again soild review Chris!

      I also hope they make a sequel, I was even making a fanfic series on my thoughts for the plot; I haven't worked on it since the pandemic but I still have the plot points I wanted memorized. If you want to read it my name on Amino is Mattobito and I have a Wiki where I was putting the chapters for ease of access.
      I think cloning works for this series, the only problem is the character count doesn't necessitate it and the choices on who and how the clones happen. The only group I hated were the Archers as they were using a move set based on Takumi's special weapon and all four archers were the same class and moveset. One could have been mounted or used bombs instead of wind. 2 clones should be the max for that game with 3 being a bit much, but 4 was excessive especially with no alternative to accompany the weapon type. Axes had three classes (grounded, mounted, and flight) in the base game, while Spears were all flight and Archers all grounded; only the Spear type got some diversity.
      Otherwise, FE Warriors was one of my favorite titles and I enjoyed most of what they used. I'm hoping the next title includes Tellius and Valentia with some more Shadow Dragon officers like FE 1 Hardin.

      @@mattobitohall Ya hopefully when we do get a sequel which we should considering that again age of calamity pirate Warriors 4 and persona 5 strikers have proven that they CAN make an interesting roster, it should be a no brainer. Plus there's a whole lot of characters from a lot of the games in the series that they could use and if they still want to use a small number of games with a specific number of characters then it has to be the ones that work like what they did with dragon quest heroes or something like that. I'll be sure to check out your little cliff notes on what you were planning on writing!

    • @mattobitohall
      @mattobitohall 3 года назад +1

      @@MrDarksol Their not really cliff-notes but full chapters. I intended to write a full story and try to include how the stages would work in each chapter. It might be a longer read.
      I agree they could make a good roster if they focus a bit more on the armies and relationships from each game, Fates' problem was that everyone was from the royal family of both groups which forced them to be bigger than the other groups in my opinion. I personally want them to focus on adding characters related by groups; like Celica getting Valbar, Bowe, Saber, or Leon while Alm is included with Clyde, Clair, Kliff, or Lucas.

    FE Warriors gets a bad rap because of the clones and the coverage and it being kinda grindy, but I feel like it's actually pretty decent.

    • @leatherfoot11
      @leatherfoot11 3 года назад +2

      I kinda disagree with the whole clones thing. I know that a lot of people had issues with clone characters, but I think it was more with the lack of characters. Now I know that they said that they were going to focus on Fates, Awakening, and the OG game. Along with Lyn and Celica as a bonus, but I think a lot of people were hoping for more characters, like the Black Knight being the Lu Bu of the FE: Warriors game.

    • @etheusrook6242
      @etheusrook6242 3 года назад

      The grindy thing really only applies to the base game (and it's nowhere near as bad as Hyrule Warriors). If you own the dlc, you have enough stages to NEVER need to replay stages outside of the occassional 2nd Anna painting.

  • @Nyahahameha
    @Nyahahameha 2 года назад +2

    I'm surprised you didn't mention movesets being locked behind Masters Seals at all during this review. Considering one of the cons you mentioned during your Pirate Warriors 4 review was moveset unlocking islands being on the character specific maps instead of the shared map, I'd have thought this even more restrictive moveset limitation would have been a con for sure.
    It's a real shame, speaking personally. That one decision on the part of the designers has pretty much killed my desire to continue playing Fire Emblem Warriors, which sucks because I like just about everything else about it, even as someone completely unfamiliar with Fire Emblem. I can't see a reason to play it over Musou games with far easier to unlock movesets like Samurai Warriors 4, or the current GOAT Fate Extella LINK which basically just gives your characters their entire movesets from the get-go and makes all other forms of progression shared across the cast.

    Yesssssssssssssssssssssss, can't wait

  • @browncoatkevin
    @browncoatkevin 3 года назад +2

    I like how the cloned moveset issue is mitigated to some extent by the stats system. Among the archers, Niles is a great mage-killer with his high Resistance, Sakura makes a strong magic-bow user with her Magic, Takumi is strong and deals massive critical hits, but he's quite fragile in return, and Anna's Luck is seriously abusable with Supports and Skills to let her simply ignore most of the enemies' defenses.
    Darios/Validar/Iago/Gharnef were possibly planned as being playable, but they ran into some issue with having 32 characters already. Perhaps some quirk of the coding wouldn't let them go above that, since it's a power of two... that would also explain the lack of Three Houses content.
    The story is simply an excuse, I do agree. Nothing like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, where they did something more unique.
    I really do hope they're at least planning a sequel, allowing for different games to be represented, like Roy meeting Ike, or for an Age of Calamity-like entirely new telling of Three Houses, where you can have everyone on your team (say... pairing Hubert and Dedue in battle) and change the story. Like you said, they have the game assets and knowledge, so it absolutely can be done.
    8/10 is a fair score. It's still one of my favorite games ever, but I'm allowed to love a flawed masterpiece.

    I know this is late but you actually can't change to performance mode when in handheld. That's only an option you get when docked. When undocked, you're forced to play 720p at 30 Frames.
    Also back in 2017, the newest Fire Emblem game at the time was Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Velentia and both that game and Warriors were released in the same year. I know you mentioned it was a missed opportunity to not add Three Houses as some form of DLC but at the time Three Houses didn't even exist outside of just a teaser that said there was a New Fire Emblem game in development for Switch. Three Houses was announced at E3 Summer 2018 and the Warriors DLC wrapped up sometime in March or April of 2018. Seeing as they pretty much finished the game as a whole, I doubt there was any intention of going back to add extra DLC unless we got an expanded version. But hey, we ended up getting Three Hopes in 2022 so that's cool.

    • @ChrisGildart

    The game's movesets are better than HW but it has clones, quality over quantity.
    Thing is, most people don't care about that, they'll take unique movesets even if it means some are unoptimal; what they want is their characters represented in an original way, because half of the fun is finally getting to use your favourite character.
    Unique movesets will always be our choice; it's the entire point when making a game based of an existing franchise.
    This game just didn't do as well as HW so it didn't get all the updates and care that game got.

    Finally got to watching this, luckily this review was around about what I expected it to go with the clones thing and the other fun stuff and some things that are mixed but understandable. The only real thing that I am at a disagreement on is Byleth DLC as while that can be really good, I don't see a place for it in this game at all considering when the games came out and whatnot. Also the main reason why I say this is because of they ever made a Fire Emblem Warriors 2, that would be a great place to add him and the gang in and I would kill if that ever happened so I use that as a hope that they may make a sequel of sorts eventually. Side note as well that one of the extra characters is Celica who is kinda based on Fire Emblem Echoes that released about 5 months before this game came out.
    Also as someone who has played some FE games, I believe it is pronounced (Shee-da) and not how you pronounced Caeda but it's understandable considering how people called Falchion until Echoes English pronounced it differently.

My main is that you have to make sure your partners are switch to do nothing otherwise they tend to get themselves killed as they charge to a point regardless of whats on the way, or beline back to a base whenever they are not controlled, which cuts into the purpose of multiple controlled characters. Also another nitpick i have is that you cant start pair up so you have to spend the first few seconds making sure they meet up to pair, which gets annoying when grinding. Still I do like this game. Fire Emblem is my favorite franchise and a Warriors crossover was my dream. So when this game was announced I was SO HYPED. But I gotta say, this might be the biggest dissapointment to me. I just have a lot of issues with the roster and such that almost ruin the game for me. Like why do Awakening/Fates get their own story sections while Shadow Dragon just shows up before the final act. Why are there no playable villains or Armor knights??? (other than the mage villains used in the game, they would be boring). Also iirc in a developer interview the devs said they intentionally left beloved characters like Ike and Roy out to use in a potential sequel
    Sorry for the rant, I'm glad you and many others enjoyed this game and I hope it got people to try out the main series but I feel this just had limitless potential that they hardly capitalized upon

    My biggest disappointment with FEW is aside from the clones, the alarming lack of playable Manaketes. Only one character in the entire roster uses Dragonstones as a weapon and it's the joke character Tiki who only becomes useful in her dragon form and I suspect they chose her original child form and not her adult form because...obvious reasons. Yes, there's also Corrin but they're classified as a Sword character. There's also the fact that while Fates and Awakening are pretty popular games, they dominate the roster, leaving Marth's era not even really evening out the roster

    FE Warriors is alright. Clones are disappointing, but the gameplay is really solid and I like that incorporates the weapon advantage stuff from the FE games. But all the additional content is just grind, and its really disheartening that the only real reward for that grind is a new character that usually has a cloned moveset.

      This is the sad truth with most Warriors games. There's never much of a completionist reward, just a few things here and there and it is very grindy. But I still love it because the gameplay is usually really solid.

      There are certainly things to complain about this game not having. This....is not one of them. I don't complain about my Final Fantasy 10 game not having Final Fantasy 11 dlc characters, year(s) before Final Fantasy 11 even came out....

    Just wanted to say how much I appreciate this balanced review of a top-tier musou game. So many just say "eww clones" and write it off.
    I don't think you were quite generous enough to History Mode and just how good it is. It is one of the best and most extensive endgame modes in the entire genre. But to balance that, as someone who wasn't a massive FE fan at the time, you weren't able to give the poor roster the proper savaging it deserves.
    So I guess that balances out the pros and cons to roughly the score you gave it.
    Here's hoping for a proper sequel. Take the same basic game, improve the story, and flesh out the roster and you could have the best game in the genre.

    The clone move-sets aren't that bad considering the franchise, but what makes it bad for me was who got cloned and the Archers; Chrom and Lucina make sense in lore and Lyn and Navarre are thematically similar, but all four Archers have the same move-set and class which makes it feel irrelevant which one you play or annoying on stages where you only play as them. They could have mixed it up by giving Niles and Anna a trap based style or let Takumi be the only one with wind attacks; or even include a mounted archer which the series has. Also, Marth and Celica are from two different continents and Celica is more about her magic then swordplay, so they shouldn't have the same style.
    I think the problem with clones wouldn't have been so bad if they included more classes and characters; Knights and Fighters are omitted as playable, the three Pegasus Knights all use spears even though at least one could have used a sword, and Fates gets a bloated group compared to the other groups included.

  • @Zado19

      Also, they were flyers, meaning they could get instant killed by Archers before Minerva's special skill was added in her dlc pack. Compare that to the three Axe characters who each had a unique move-set AND class (grounded, mounted, and flight) with one being an Armored subclass which reduces archer damage. Pegasus Knights could heal, but it would have been better to have at least one mounted fighter like Xander and Frederick who used a Spear to give the cast a bit more diversity.

I've never been a fan of the weapon triangle system in Dynasty Warriors games (it's kinda a part of the Fire Emblem series though so idk how they can implement it in a way that feels better). I almost maxed everything and got almost every achievement but It never felt that good to me. The only reason why I played so much was to see if achievement hunting was interesting but it just felt painful. It just feels too empty and repetitive.

    Personally, I LOVED this game as one of my all time favorite Warriors games. And I so wished there was a sequel. But it's not going to, because the Fire Emblem toxic community tore it to piece over the silliest things.
    I just hated that when this game came out, the primary complaint that led to the toxic side of the gatekeeping FE Fandom...was its roster.
    And if you think about the SOLUTION that was offered by that side of the community....you realize how awful their idea was on a business side.
    For one, they were upset that it focused on, at the time, the 2 most popular FE verses. That being Awakening and Fates.
    They felt it should have focused more on the far more obscure lesser known titles, and completely ignored Awakening and Fates.
    Utter....madness.
    Yeah....let's create a warriors game for FE....and completely ignore the most popular characters and universe, SOLELY because the gatekeeping side of the community hated everything new.
    These were beloved characters designed to draw more people in. And FE had already proven that if you IGNORE the features and characters that drew so much needed new blood into the dying FE universe.....it doesn't end well.
    Like with Echoes....
    A game where Nintendo decided to listen to their old guard and simply do a remake that focused entirely on an older and beloved story. Fire Emblem Echoes.. They almost completely did away with any of the shipping features that allowed romance amongst your party (as everything was pre determined), and focused solely on what the old guard SAID they wanted....
    And it sold like crap.....
    Dropping down to numbers far below what they were selling with their older games...even BEFORE Awakening revitalized the series.
    So, why would you make a FE Warriors game using ONLY characters that, unfortunately, aren't a hugely familiar to the new massive fan base?
    You don't, unless you are literally setting out to fail while trying appease that will not be appeased.
    Like with Echoes.....
    Which led to the SECOND solution offer...
    Just use characters from ALL the FE games. Mainly, the main characters.
    ........
    ...........
    .............
    You do realize then that 99.999999% of the cast will ONLY be sword users then, right? Almost all your clone characters will be the main characters from each game >< with the only truly unique ones being that very very very rare spear user lol.
    That just devalues each lord from each FE game.
    The other solution I saw was....why not just have 100 to 200+ characters for their first game? This way they can easily add more beloved characters for each game!
    I wish they had done that too! But I'm realistic, so......
    In my opinion, they did the absolute best choice they could have done for A FIRST GAME roster. Get people into it with the major characters that a lot of people know and love, with some small entries from the other FE games in there. Marth, Celica, Lynn, etc.
    And THEN, with your second game....you shift the focus to the other beloved, but lesser known FE games. As well as a huge focus on your majority popular new FE title, Three Houses. Composing of maybe 4 to 7 characters of the roster (Teacher, the Three Lords, a plus one from each house maybe.)
    Heck, they could even have my favorite FE character, Ike! Who STILL has my favorite storyline of any FE game. Along with my boy Sorin.
    And since they already had Celica and Lyn....focus on their stories and add some more from them. Alm, Hector, Eliwood, descendent Roy, etc.
    And with a sequel, and having already gotten your Awakening, and Fates fan base in there.....it really would be a heck of a lot easier to now start adding your classic roster.
    But.....that'll never happen now. Cause this game got a boycott campaign to death by the people who were upset over the roster.
    It really does feel like FE is split heavily down the middle. You got the side who loves games like Awakening and Fates and the features of them.
    And then you got the old guard who ADAMANTLY hates those games, and feels that you should not be allowed to like those games....and still call yourself an FE fan.
    Thankfully, Three Houses alleviated some of that it seems, and the Old Toxic Guard seem a little less aggressive nowadays. But if you mention Awakening or Fates in a comment section though.....you're usually gonna get called some kind of childish name or attacked by them if they see it.
    This game however, Warriors.....is quite dead sadly. The old guard can pat themselves on the back for that one. And Nintendo can continue to wonder why it's worth pandering to the old guard, when Echoes sold so badly

    I can't stand clones in these games. There is no justification whatsoever. It's not quality if every character plays like another. That's laziness. If devs really couldn't have been bothered to give every character their very own unique moveset, they shouldn't have added them in the game in the first place. And what's disgusting is dlc characters being clones. Really? Pay extra for a new character that pretty much already exists in the base game? Nope. Fuck that.
