yeah for the tradition to be upheld you can't circle breathe. it takes years of practice to actually learn how to do it right. some people compare it to blowing a trumpet, but it's actually much harder than that. there's a lot more resistance, plus the horn itself is thick and the opening is smaller usually too. i know our congregation had one shofar blower for about 25 years until his lungs finally couldn't do it anymore, but he had been working with his son the whole time.

Never measured it, but my guess would be around 30 inches.
