Watching this video it took literally two minutes for me to start making noise with my shofar and my neighbors are now blessed with the noise of the Ruach, whether they like it or not! :P
I just received my 1st shofar and tried it, no sound (lol). Then I watched other 'how to blow the shofar' in youtube still no sound until I watched your video. Your technique is so simple but works. I was able to play Amazing Grace after few try's with my new shofar and it gives me goosebumps. Thank you and GOD Bless!!!
your pfp is lgbtq also with the star of david lgbtq isn’t how God wanted marriages and your also putting the star of david onto a lgbtq flag that people made it as different genders which a rainbow is the promise of God it’s beautiful and people turn it into lgbtq and something God doesn’t want
@@johnathanandrews5430 the rainbow is literally a sign of the covenant between Noah and G-D, maybe you should catch up with the thousands of years of tradition…
Tip #1: use a little chapstick to moisten your lips. Makes all the difference in the world! I played trumpet in elementary school and at 50 I picked up a shofar and was able to play my first time.
thx a lot, got my shofar two days ago, thought it would be more difficult to make a good sound. peace and love from austria! maybe playing the shofar can bring some hope, in times of repression...🙏
Thank you for this video! My husband bought me a shofar because I saw one on the series, The Chosen, and really wanted one. I tried it, got light-headed, and got no sound. Thanks to your video, I'm now off to a good start. Only problem...it scared the heck out of my 14 year old dog and he ran from the room with his tail between his legs🤣
@@Cynthia99911 I wish I could get my dog used to it. I tried giving him a treat, after he gets scared, but he's too scared to eat the treat😜 I want to practice but he's always with me.
I've been wanting a shofar for a couple of years, finally ordered one, and it came yesterday! My cat is not yet sure what he thinks about the whole experience.
The thought never entered my mind before a week or so ago to blow a shophar ❤️. My husband purchased one from Israel for me ,it hasn’t arrived yet but I’m excited and hoping to get it soon and start practicing on it . To God be all the glory.
Your husband sounds cool. I had assumed that there was a problem with: A) Legality of animal horn importation. I guess not. I can find nothing on the internet that suggests that. B) Can gentiles be allowed to play? I see some stuff about that on the internet but nothing is too clear, Can we play only to gentiles? Or only among women? I did see something like that but still not clear. Yes, even women sounding the shofa amongst just women is mentioned. Playing a song? I guess that is okay. The instructor just did. Maybe he can do “Melancholy Baby” next time. After all, that is about reflection, too. Shana Tova. 🧸🎉
@@robkunkel8833 There is no reason why a gentile can't blow the shofar. However, s/he would not be permitted to do so in the synagogue on the holiday to fulfill the mitzvah of hearing the shofar, any more than a gentile can learn to read Hebrew and even cantillation but would not be allowed to read Torah for the congregation on Shabbat.
Arguably, he DOES provide a secret. To practice with a “trumpet mouthpiece”. I happened to have one & used it per his advice & it seems to make a difference!
I can vouch for the "practice on a mouthpiece" advice! My mom plays French Horn in a small orchestra and she keeps a spare mouthpiece in her car, and toots along to the music on the radio. It really builds up your strength! Good luck to everybody learning!
I'm so glad I found this video! I saw another one before this one, tried it based on his instructions, but couldn't get it. I kept searching, found yours and, within 5 minutes, I was able to do it! 🤸♀🤸♀🤸♀🤸♀🤸♀🤸♀🤸♀ Thank you! ☺☺☺
It's been almost a year I see, since you made this video. I hope it has been good for you and yours! Your instructions are well rehearsed and clear, and they're really helping me in my practice! Yashar Koach, and may you have a great new year!
B”H, great and entertaining at the same time!! I would say that the idea of using a trumpet mouthpiece to practice in the beginning is a simple secret, which is really great! Thank you!!
Great technique and thank you for the pointers. Your teaching style makes it easy. One comment:Since the purpose of shofar is to fulfill the mitzvah on Rosh Hashanah, playing a tune with it is halachically problematic. I wouldn't encourage it. Playing a tune on Shabbos or yom tov with an instrument is not allowed. Blowing the shofar for the mitzvah is allowed on Rosh Hashanah.
Hi Jay, thanks for your comments--seeing this in September, 2022. The question of whether a shofar can be played as a musical instrument is a tricky one. It is not halachically prohibited, however it raises the issue of whether something that is embraced ritually can also be embraced secularly. When Hebrew was first suggested as the language of Eretz Yisrael by Ben Yehudah, many objected, saying that it would be a disgrace to use the same language of David's Psalms to direct how to drive a tractor or even tell dirty jokes. Yet people did embrace it, even Haredi Jews in Israel. My purpose in playing secular songs on the shofar is to honor and elevate it, by bringing people who do not appreciate as much as perhaps you and I do even closer to its beauty and potential. Shanah Tovah!
It's like playing trumpet, but the mouthpiece is very small. However, on a modern trumpet mouthpiece you can press it onto your lips pretty hard, in fact it's a problem trumpet students tussle with. But I have started on shofar and have a particularly hard to blow one (short, and small mouthpiece opening) and it works for me with nearly no pressure. I will get a better shofar later after I have mastered this hard to blow one.
HI, THANK you for this tutorial and great tips. I just discovered the Shofar today!! and I am SO happy. Just a little tip on your camera angle for the future. You were not looking into the camera, but above it. Perhaps do a spot check before posting the next vid. to make sure you are making eye contact. Everything else is perfect. I like your teaching a lot I felt it was accurate. The only area I would change is when you say there are three thousand and then later on you explain the first one. I think it would be less confusion if you total number four and blue all four together. That is a teaching from the master's from years and years of teaching from those like Rabbi Art Finkle and Rabbi Reuben
......I realized the incredible dept of life, that springs forth in the creation of the world.......This seems to be accomplished, with the release, from the possible, to the reality.......... if you are able to blow a rasperry with your mouth, either the front or side, it shouldn't be impossible. (blowing a rasperry being making the farting sound with your lips, no tounge or teeth involved.
It depends on where you live. If you're in or near a city with a large Jewish population, there will likely be a Jewish bookstore or gift shop, which will have a wide variety of sizes and styles. You can also just google "shofar" online and find one. I would recommend staying away from anything that is artificially embellished (decorative metal plating, etc).
Get a trumpet mouthpiece. Don't get a Bach brand, they're too expensive. Get a Blessing brand, size 7C. Now, once you have that mouthpiece in hand, go to a home improvement store and get some flexible tubing the mouthpiece fits into. Get about a 2-foot piece, maybe 1-1/2 foot. Now you have a practice shofar. Practice on that while watching TV or any time you have some time free.
I bought 2 and just loved learning to blow them. I wound up sending them to a Christian friend in Pakistan where he had much trouble getting them out of customs due to I didn’t take the “made in Israel” stickers off them! And of course Pakistan opened my box I sent! Pakistan does not allow any Israeli products into country. But with God all things are possible and he got his shofars 2 days before his Easter service!
So this is exactly like blowing a trumpet? Awesome! I've been trying to figure out how to practice without blowing the shofar itself. There's a not always funny thing that occurs when an angelic (Angel in human form for long-term assignments) blows a shofar. Shit tends to happen. Sometimes good shit, sometimes bad shit.
There are some shofar-safe oils sold online that hydrate and seal the shofar and keeps it lasting longer and less naturally stinky 🙂 it gets more intense in smell as you practice on it and it gets internally wetted by your breath, fair warning ❤
