    The Ukrainian elections are Sunday, and there's still uncertainty that they will actually take place in eastern Ukraine. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky travels around the eastern part of the country to gauge the vibe before election day.
    He interviews Ukraine's Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov about plans to make sure everything goes smoothly in Donetsk and Luhansk - areas which have a heavy presence of pro-Russia forces. He then visits a polling station in Donetsk where nearby a Ukrainian checkpoint was attacked a few hours earlier resulting in at least 11 deaths, and meets up with the Donbas Battalion, who are working to ensure that everyone will be able to participate in the elections. Despite the measures that are being taken by Ukrainian troops and officials, it's still unclear what tomorrow will bring.

      I'm doing a paper on this subject. There is no good definition of a civil war but most people use the 1000 deads rule. If 1000 people or more die as a direct result of armed conflicts between two or more factions from the same country it's called a civil war. But yeah it's still hard to know how many people died already in Ukraine..

The National Guard is the one filled with men from west Ukraine and from the Maiden, so less money on each soldier. I really hope that Ukrainians know better than vote for extremes. Whom ever is elected president has to set a new tone to address the unrest in the country by conducting diplomatic dialogue with antimaidan leaders. Showing willingness to listen may just turn everything around. Turning Ukraine into federal government might just be the right way to go. For everyone's sake.

    • @Yutani_Crayven
      @Yutani_Crayven 10 лет назад +8

      D3adtrap There are no anti Maidan leaders among those armed separatists. It's only a small group of armed gangs, who are anarchists. Anti-Maidan leaders would be local politicians or representatives of regular folk. While people overwhelmingly disapprove of the way the interim government in Kyiv came to power, they disapprove of armed militias disturbing the peace and of Moscow rule as well.

    • @D3adtrap
      @D3adtrap 10 лет назад +7

      ***** This is true. Pro-Russian separatists are the extreme element in Antimaidan movement. I still believe that situation can be resolved in peaceful manner provided both sides are willing to sit at the table and talk. Thus far we only have rhetoric coming from both camps.

    • @Yutani_Crayven
      @Yutani_Crayven 10 лет назад

      D3adtrap I hope that the new president will fix this situation by giving the regions some more power and de-escalating the situation that way. But it looks like (and always has) that those "people's mayors" and their people never had any attention to settle for less than out right secession/100% independence. They make it a point to reiterate that where they are now is a "new country" and "their" territory.

    Ukraine cannot move on until this conflicts ends.The separatist say that its hard to live in Ukraine well move to Russia and stop trying to start a war and end this bloodshed.Its proof that people are loosing businesses and are miserable in eastern Ukraine because of the separatist. But yet again, after every one of these protests, even if they achieved what they wanted to achieve, somehow it was still Russia's fault for their countries economic downfall.

      Dejan Andric
      Kharkiv Pact - Russia unilateral terminated the treaty on March 31, 2014! The Budapest Memorandum states that russia must:
      ▲ Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty within its existing borders.
      ▲ Refrain from the threat or use of force against Ukraine.
      ▲ Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine in order to influence its politics.
      Did putin follow the rules? Fuck no! He must give yankoWitch back to Ukraine, or give back the nuclear supply!

    • @deaansugee
      @deaansugee 10 лет назад +1

      Lumiel Zaibatsu I'm talking about this pact.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Kharkiv_Pact
      Ukraine agreed to let 25k Russian troops, together with a bunch of machinery (Russia did not exceed this number) be placed in Crimea. And if you're going to cry and whine about them occupying Ukrainian bases, let me remind you - a bunch of Ukrainian commanders defected from Ukraine to Crimea (Russia) very early in the plot, meaning they gave Russia authorization to occupy military bases.
      And i have no idea what the heck it is you're saying when you say "Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine..", *THE ONLY* thing Russia did economically to Ukraine is ask for the *DEBT UKRAINE ALREADY HAS* towards Russia, that's not economic pressure, that's common fucking sense.

    • @Zainano
      @Zainano 10 лет назад +3

      Read your own link!
      Citation from wikipedia:
      "Shortly after the (disputed) March 2014 accession of Crimea to the Russian Federation Russia unilateral terminated the treaty on March 31, 2014."
      DEBT UKRAINE ALREADY HAS was neglected by the national crimianl Viktor Yanukovych - whos under Pidarutins protection!
      Ukraine has lost at least $80 billion since Russia annexed its southern Crimea region and the price tag will be much higher when Kiev includes lost profits and the value of possible energy reserves in the Black Sea.
      These $80 billion will be asked from russia after International arbitration
      calculates all the loses!

      1. There has been reports of atleast a dozen of civilians killed by the Ukrainian military, including a doctor that came to help the separatists but was shot by the machine gun on the BTR, but I guess that is not enough for you. Here is a video of some houses burning in Slavyanks.anna-news.info/node/16324#comments There are more videos like that, but their RUclips channel got banned and same happend with their streaming channel. Wonder why that happend.
      2. Do you really think that their bodies are the only abandoned ones? The same happend to pro-Russians. The journalists that died where found by pro-Russians and not Ukrainian military, hmm I wonder why.
      3. Respect human rights, indeed. You know who doesn't respect human rights? Radical "patriot" forces that come straight from Euromaidan and don't support neutrality in the army or the police. Just look how radical they are on social networks. No matter who you are, civilian or not, you will still get shot if you not support the pro-Ukrainians.

    • @promontorium
      @promontorium 10 лет назад +26

      Antoha0102 Are you somehow surprised someone would get hurt if they're among the separatists when the Ukrainians attacked? That's what war is. All this tells me is that the Ukrainians are actually starting to fight back. I'm glad there is a Ukrainian side to be firing from.

  • @Crouchy232323
    @Crouchy232323 10 лет назад +6

    If the people of Eastern and Southern Ukraine asked the IMF for a loan the fighting would stop. I don't know how the western or the rest of the world's media would be told to frame that development though. Flight MH370 would probably turn up just in time. Put it in the book.

    • @samuelgebries1550
      @samuelgebries1550 10 лет назад +1

      Well the situation with IMF loan i very difficult at the time. IMF demands to stop the uprising and alot of social cuts that would cut people`s pension, and decrease the social workers salary if not cutting them to zero (look at Greece). While Russia in february 2014 was ready to give Ukraine $15Billon to support the economy but as we know, one thing led to another and the whole situation got to this civil uprising.

    • @Crouchy232323
      @Crouchy232323 10 лет назад +2

      *****
      Like Kiev. That's what the good people of Ukraine fought and died on the Maidan to be left with. Disgraceful.
      If you want an idea of what the IMF is about, Venezuela lent Brazil $5billion to pay off their IMF loan in full. The IMF wouldn't accept it. They wanted Brazil to rollover the loan. It is not about the money, it is about control. Austerity programmes slashing pensions, public sector wages, fuel subsides and privatisation of the industries Ukrainians have built up over generations while the country is at best full of guns and at worse in the middle of a civil war is a recipe for extremism.
      The West have played their hand. Chaos will continue to ensue. If only we could've predicted this. If the same thing had happened in Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq we could've taken lessons from those mistakes. Or did they go according to plan in the same way Ukraine is today? It can't be unnoticed that US foreign policy is achieving the same results with each new gift of democracy down the barrel of a gun.
      Someone is making out well from this. It certainly isn't the Ukrainians, be them ''Ukrainian'' Ukrainians or ''Pro-Russia separatist'' Ukrainians.
      Being Scottish and being in favour of Scottish independence does that make me a ''pro-Scotland Scotsman?'' or would that sound like nonsense propaganda to you, like it does to me?

      олег бурдин
      The people of Eastern Ukraine/NovoRussia should call their bluff. Ask for an IMF loan, with no intention of accepting it, then you would see who is really calling the shots in Kiev. Both east and west Ukraine are being badly let down. Divide and conquer. Oldest trick in the book. If both sides could realise who the real enemy is the good people of the region would soon be back on their feet.
