The Ukrainian elections are Sunday, and there's still uncertainty that they will actually take place in eastern Ukraine. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky travels around the eastern part of the country to gauge the vibe before election day.
He interviews Ukraine's Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov about plans to make sure everything goes smoothly in Donetsk and Luhansk - areas which have a heavy presence of pro-Russia forces. He then visits a polling station in Donetsk where nearby a Ukrainian checkpoint was attacked a few hours earlier resulting in at least 11 deaths, and meets up with the Donbas Battalion, who are working to ensure that everyone will be able to participate in the elections. Despite the measures that are being taken by Ukrainian troops and officials, it's still unclear what tomorrow will bring.

Rewatching the entire series makes one truly appreciate the things said by all parties. It might be the best prequel to understanding the events in 2022.
Yup, people have to understand that the ukrainian side ain't angels
The Ukrainian SIDE ARE A bunch of thugs.
@@neonlight1214 i agree. I was gun ho ukraine, now i feel different. I am not pro russia but ukraine government sure screwed up in the donbass. However, putin can suk azz for invading. This is not the 14th century. Even if russia wins militarily he successfully achieved the expansion of nato and let russia become a pariah. Russia enjoy your vacations in crimea for the next 3 decades, the free world unwelcomes you and your yachts.
@@neonlight1214 no one is, but the Russian supported the civil war and contributed to the instability and are antidemocratic.
@de caesaris ? What kind of treaties and agremeents? The Minsk agreements were signed by Ukraine and the LDNR. They were never implemented, ukraine never ensured to break hostilities. The minsk agreements ensured the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Oh look a press interview without people threatening the lives of journalists. Must not be Russian.

This is when I say it. Vice makes the most amazing and greatest in depth news reporting I have seen in my life. Truly astonishing, I am so grateful to the for supplying the world with all this knowledge!!!
Can we call it a civil war at this point?
Pretty much
I'm doing a paper on this subject. There is no good definition of a civil war but most people use the 1000 deads rule. If 1000 people or more die as a direct result of armed conflicts between two or more factions from the same country it's called a civil war. But yeah it's still hard to know how many people died already in Ukraine..
Martijn Van Den Boogaert I'd put the number around 200 so far.
***** They're not Ukrainians anymore. Now they're "Novorossiyans."
Malacovics I don't think so. According to Wikipedia, it would need to be large scale, but it only involves small gangs of violent thugs - yet. The term isn't very specific though. What's wrong with referring to it as armed conflict instead?
Stay safe Simon
Thank you Mr. Simon Ostrovsky (?) for going back to Ukraine after your troubles. Keep it up, #1 reporter from north america!

Simon is a great reporter, much better than most on Vice.
I hope this crew survives till the end. They are the best and truthful news team I ever seen.
Good to see simon back at work, be careful down there, and thank u for giving us this vital information.
All the comments about Simon being so brave are mute. Look at the Ukrainian men who are fighting the Russian invaders. Slava Ukraine!
Geroyam slava
Well it seems that the real Ukrainian army has quit good equipment, not like their patriots who carries WW2/USSR Era weapons
They are not army, they are a private army of Jewish oligarch Kolomojskij, and their equipment is not good, just new uniforms.
Fox100cool Ignore him, the guards you see here are a section of the actual Ukraine Army, which has much less men so more money to spend on each soldier. The National Guard is the one filled with men from west Ukraine and from the Maiden, so less money on each soldier. It's kind of like if we followed the Pentagon's plan, shrunk our military down to the Navy, National Guard, and Air Force, then had 6 Marine Units for the President.
I think those units at the beginning are the president's personal protection, well equipped stuff they got there indeed
As Shedio said, there is only a small amount of troops with good kits and guns...a lot of simple soldiers dont even have bulletproof vests...although volunteers are collecting money and buying required items, including the vests and scopes for the army. I also donated...
there is a big need for night vision goggles right now as a lot of attacks happen at night.
those arent just regular army troops. they are protecting the iterim president so they probably are some kind of special unit. normal ukrainian soldiers dont have such andvanced equipment like eo tech sights.
I really hope that Ukrainians know better than vote for extremes. Whom ever is elected president has to set a new tone to address the unrest in the country by conducting diplomatic dialogue with antimaidan leaders. Showing willingness to listen may just turn everything around. Turning Ukraine into federal government might just be the right way to go. For everyone's sake.
D3adtrap There are no anti Maidan leaders among those armed separatists. It's only a small group of armed gangs, who are anarchists. Anti-Maidan leaders would be local politicians or representatives of regular folk. While people overwhelmingly disapprove of the way the interim government in Kyiv came to power, they disapprove of armed militias disturbing the peace and of Moscow rule as well.
***** This is true. Pro-Russian separatists are the extreme element in Antimaidan movement. I still believe that situation can be resolved in peaceful manner provided both sides are willing to sit at the table and talk. Thus far we only have rhetoric coming from both camps.
D3adtrap I hope that the new president will fix this situation by giving the regions some more power and de-escalating the situation that way. But it looks like (and always has) that those "people's mayors" and their people never had any attention to settle for less than out right secession/100% independence. They make it a point to reiterate that where they are now is a "new country" and "their" territory.
D3adtrap It didn't and it wont because Putin wants Ukraine.
Seems they never figured it out.
Thx for the reporting, Simon & co., be safe.
when that round went off at about 8:00 I even ducked
7:10 Incredible from their response back then they clearly didn't know on behalf of who they were officialy operating, and fallback to the recruitment slogan they were recruited with. At the time that unit was indeed part of the Interim Government Interior Ministry.
Ukraine cannot move on until this conflicts ends. The separatist say that its hard to live in Ukraine well move to Russia and stop trying to start a war and end this bloodshed. Its proof that people are loosing businesses and are miserable in eastern Ukraine because of the separatist. Everything between Russia and NATO is still happening because the separatist so the faster Ukraine wins then the faster things will get back to normal and Ukraine can finally start building itself again.
NATO will never win Ukraine
When you say that Ukraine will start building itself, I suppose you mean thet the rich will get richer, the pensioners will starve to death ( because of the 50% of pension cutbacks), the rise of the ukrainian nationalism ( hatred against Russian speakers, black people, etc), rise in crime because of the impovershid part of the population ( Eastern Ukraine) with huge social cutbacks/no jobs etc....The Donbass is the richest region in Ukraine but have the poorest population of Ukraine! How is that possible?
Ukraine Winn not move on because after maidan some crooks and right wingers got into power they call Russians separatists and kill them! It is true there is plenty videos of ukranian soldiers shooting civilians and also nurder of mAny Russian speaking Ukrainians trapped inside the building In Odessa there were women children old men and even a pregnant women murdered not only burned and media called them separatists! Wow! New power in Kiev is scum and I hope they vanish from the face of the earth! No point of elections they all are crooks!
***** No one was talking about NATO joining Ukraine until AFTER Russia decided it was a good idea to invade a sovereign nation. So blame Russia for that one or more specifically Putin since he runs the show from top to bottom.
***** He doesn't hate his country like these Pro-Russians do so why would he move? THEY are the ones that need to move instead of intimidate their own people in the OWN region to not vote in the Presidential elections because they know the masses would show they do not want to be a part of this "Donetsk Republic".
If it was not for the Vice News reporters out there risking their lives to get this video coverage, who would? Stay safe guys. Really good work.

Because Ukrainians are in their Home and Russians not.
Brilliant filming. Loved how the cameraman slowly panned the camera from the armed dude to the roses. Now I know they are the good guys.
Props to Simon dude was kidnapped and here is back in action and props to the English guy who filled in for Simon.
What is the point of a election? No matter who you vote, the us will choose a leader for you.
or Russia will.....
Russia is picking Ukraine's path that's what started this...
There is no U.S. involvement in the Ukraine.
Oskar Mamrzynski to be honest, i really hope there is. Ukraine was a shithole since 1991 because of the old soviet politicians that continued there (or new politicians with old mindset), prostituting the country for gas. Time for a change.
Dan D Many times in recent history Ukrainians have said "Time for a change", started protesting, and all this jazz (not as bad as now) took place. But yet again, after every one of these protests, even if they achieved what they wanted to achieve, somehow it was still Russia's fault for their countries economic downfall.
Maidan won't change anything. Protests have *almost never* made any significant changes in history.
Very interesting to compare right now, what people have been thinking 6 years ago, about the further end of the war, peaceful living after president selection, and what finally we have now, like long-frozen war which will continue for much more time in future
Guys on the APC at the start protecting the president look like contractors

Russia should follow the Budapest Memorandum treaty they signed in 1994, or otherwise bend-over. Nobody will help a backstaber!
I would like to remind you of the Khark pact, if you're talking about Crimea, if you're talking about Eastern Ukraine, the Russian government didn't involve itself there, because it is well aware of the dangers of it.
That does not mean the Russian ex-war veterans are going to sit put though.
Dejan Andric
Kharkiv Pact - Russia unilateral terminated the treaty on March 31, 2014! The Budapest Memorandum states that russia must:
▲ Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty within its existing borders.
▲ Refrain from the threat or use of force against Ukraine.
▲ Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine in order to influence its politics.
Did putin follow the rules? Fuck no! He must give yankoWitch back to Ukraine, or give back the nuclear supply!
Lumiel Zaibatsu I'm talking about this pact.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Kharkiv_Pact
Ukraine agreed to let 25k Russian troops, together with a bunch of machinery (Russia did not exceed this number) be placed in Crimea. And if you're going to cry and whine about them occupying Ukrainian bases, let me remind you - a bunch of Ukrainian commanders defected from Ukraine to Crimea (Russia) very early in the plot, meaning they gave Russia authorization to occupy military bases.
And i have no idea what the heck it is you're saying when you say "Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine..", *THE ONLY* thing Russia did economically to Ukraine is ask for the *DEBT UKRAINE ALREADY HAS* towards Russia, that's not economic pressure, that's common fucking sense.
Read your own link!
Citation from wikipedia:
"Shortly after the (disputed) March 2014 accession of Crimea to the Russian Federation Russia unilateral terminated the treaty on March 31, 2014."
DEBT UKRAINE ALREADY HAS was neglected by the national crimianl Viktor Yanukovych - whos under Pidarutins protection!
Ukraine has lost at least $80 billion since Russia annexed its southern Crimea region and the price tag will be much higher when Kiev includes lost profits and the value of possible energy reserves in the Black Sea.
These $80 billion will be asked from russia after International arbitration
calculates all the loses!

TwoFistsOneHalleluja
Oh, the people that stormed the block-posts after they bombed Slavyansk with mortar fire and destroyed 2 apartment buildings?
Antoha0102 1/ Provide proof and body count.
2/ Still no reason to abandon their bodies in a field like they were trash or something. Respect your enemy.
3/ I saw on another footage of that scene that some of them were probably executed (shot in the back of the head). Respect human rights.
TwoFistsOneHalleluja
1. There has been reports of atleast a dozen of civilians killed by the Ukrainian military, including a doctor that came to help the separatists but was shot by the machine gun on the BTR, but I guess that is not enough for you. Here is a video of some houses burning in Slavyanks.anna-news.info/node/16324#comments There are more videos like that, but their RUclips channel got banned and same happend with their streaming channel. Wonder why that happend.
2. Do you really think that their bodies are the only abandoned ones? The same happend to pro-Russians. The journalists that died where found by pro-Russians and not Ukrainian military, hmm I wonder why.
3. Respect human rights, indeed. You know who doesn't respect human rights? Radical "patriot" forces that come straight from Euromaidan and don't support neutrality in the army or the police. Just look how radical they are on social networks. No matter who you are, civilian or not, you will still get shot if you not support the pro-Ukrainians.
Antoha0102 Are you somehow surprised someone would get hurt if they're among the separatists when the Ukrainians attacked? That's what war is. All this tells me is that the Ukrainians are actually starting to fight back. I'm glad there is a Ukrainian side to be firing from.
If the people of Eastern and Southern Ukraine asked the IMF for a loan the fighting would stop. I don't know how the western or the rest of the world's media would be told to frame that development though. Flight MH370 would probably turn up just in time. Put it in the book.
Well the situation with IMF loan i very difficult at the time. IMF demands to stop the uprising and alot of social cuts that would cut people`s pension, and decrease the social workers salary if not cutting them to zero (look at Greece). While Russia in february 2014 was ready to give Ukraine $15Billon to support the economy but as we know, one thing led to another and the whole situation got to this civil uprising.
*****
Like Kiev. That's what the good people of Ukraine fought and died on the Maidan to be left with. Disgraceful.
If you want an idea of what the IMF is about, Venezuela lent Brazil $5billion to pay off their IMF loan in full. The IMF wouldn't accept it. They wanted Brazil to rollover the loan. It is not about the money, it is about control. Austerity programmes slashing pensions, public sector wages, fuel subsides and privatisation of the industries Ukrainians have built up over generations while the country is at best full of guns and at worse in the middle of a civil war is a recipe for extremism.
The West have played their hand. Chaos will continue to ensue. If only we could've predicted this. If the same thing had happened in Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq we could've taken lessons from those mistakes. Or did they go according to plan in the same way Ukraine is today? It can't be unnoticed that US foreign policy is achieving the same results with each new gift of democracy down the barrel of a gun.
Someone is making out well from this. It certainly isn't the Ukrainians, be them ''Ukrainian'' Ukrainians or ''Pro-Russia separatist'' Ukrainians.
Being Scottish and being in favour of Scottish independence does that make me a ''pro-Scotland Scotsman?'' or would that sound like nonsense propaganda to you, like it does to me?
People of Easter Ukraine never have loan. And all " candidates " are oligarchs, criminals or just insane people, situation are about to be much worse. For witch side ? I hope for Ukraine strugglers. Not for people of Novorussia.
олег бурдин
The people of Eastern Ukraine/NovoRussia should call their bluff. Ask for an IMF loan, with no intention of accepting it, then you would see who is really calling the shots in Kiev. Both east and west Ukraine are being badly let down. Divide and conquer. Oldest trick in the book. If both sides could realise who the real enemy is the good people of the region would soon be back on their feet.
олег бурдин Novorussia is fake. Don't believe russians!

The IFV are pretty similar to USMC LAV 25...And the way those guys hand their rifles atop them very like US ex military forces around the world. Can we say now where the "economic aid" is going? Since soldiers in regular batallions refuse to fight the federalists, they use the "national guard" formed by pravy sektor gangsters; the Donbass battallion paid by Akhmetov and Academi mercenaries paid by IMF

he chose the persons he interviews, he chose his questions, and he does the final editing.
people always expect to get the very true information watching one channel/media. they are all biased one way or another.
to get the closer to the truth as possible, you have to deversify your sources, ear every version of one story, and then process it with your very own brain, and knowledge, make an average of it ect...
