As the Donetsk People's Republic opened up a new front to the south of Donetsk, Ukrainian forces continued their artillery bombardment of the city. With the pro-Russia rebels also using artillery to push back the military, civilians are often caught in the deadly crossfire.
VICE News headed to the Donetsk train station to see the destructive aftermath of the shelling, and later spoke with the chief coroner of the city's central morgue to hear how he and his staff are struggling to manage the influx of bodies.

That morgue doctor is a wonder. He must be exhausted, heartbroken, traumatized, terrified, hungry?, overwhelmed, overworked, who knows if he'll get paid?, yet he keeps on. There are some amazing people out there, who, under horrific conditions, think of others, and give their all to try and maintain even the tiniest bit of order. I'm so glad to have met him.

Literally everyone knows that civilian casualties in the war have existed on both sides. Nobody's pretending it doesn't exist. It's war and civilians die, of course that doesn't make it okay. The difference is the sheer scale. Ukraine isn't the one sending barrages of missile after missile into separatist cities.
"During the entire conflict period, from 14 April
      2014 to 30 September 2021, OHCHR recorded
      a total of 3,095 conflict-related civilian deaths"

@@fightback397 It’s a war. There will be unintentional civilian casualties. Easiest way to stop it is for the DPR to stop their armed rebellion.
DPR has killed several civilians as well with their shelling and they are the ones that started this mess thinking they would be accepted by Russia in the way Crimea was taken.
Total civilian death toll through 2014 to December 2021 is about 3400. 2021 only had 25 civilian casualties. Then guess who invaded in 2022 and heated up this conflict again? Russia. Now the civilian death toll is higher than ever with over 8,000.

For example in Odessa a law has passed to forbid Russian language in that city, people of course protested as that is nazist and fascist from the government. The pro-ukrainians marched in and burned 42 people in the Trade unions house on May 2nd. To this day no one was caught guilty.

First of all I want to congratulate the vice crew for the tremendous job they did so far.
Second of all I wonder, in this age of satellites, ultra HD cameras and super accurate computer simulations, how come no one can say with solid proof which side is causing the shelling. I mean we have the technology to predict how the Galaxy will look like in billion of years but we can't say for sure who is bombing apartments habited by 70 year old people. Not implying anything I just want to know if there's solid proof about who's responsible.

I find it hard to believe what the coroner at the morgue had to say, he said 20-30 people where coming in everyday, then said on a week of intense shelling it was 12-17 a day? That doesnt make sense. And he also said just because some explosions hit the morgue and other buildings nearby it was deliberate? How did he come to that conclusion?

Being from a neutral country, India, I have an unbiased stand. I feel that the people of Donetsk do not like Poroshenko. Although the world view this fight as one between the mighty Russia and the weaker Ukraine. Hence, naturally the sympathies and thoughts tend to go with the Ukranian side. But if we go by the facts, the people or Donetsk are Pro-Russian and they want to be on the Russian side. I guess Ukraine should start negotiating rather than targeting civilians.

After 2017, Ukraine refused to have the UN peacekeepers, presumably because they did not want to freeze the conflict after having lost too much land. In 2022, Putin once again refuses to have UN peacekeepers - presumably yet more land is desired now.

Yes. And everyone who says “They just needed to have a referendum in the East” ignores the fact you can’t have a fair referendum in a conflict zone & the East wouldn’t allow international observers broadly during referendums. Not only that but when cease fires were called, shelling often would start a few days in. Russia & the separatists claimed it was Ukraine. Problem is, some of those areas the Ukrainian army didn’t even have artillery … one side did though …
Is Ukraine perfect? Nope. Corruption? Yep. Have they blocked out news during this conflict, yes. But they’ve never been able to grow as a country free of interference & meddling. Many of the top corrupt officials & oligarchs have Russian residency. Not black & white, but 1 side has been playing a long term sneaky game.
