Congrats Ryan! Take some lessons and enjoy your beautiful keyboard to the fullest. As a former teacher and keys sales rep for a leading retailer... here is another reccomendation:
Find out who your local 'Genos Guru' is ... and hire them to walk you through everything your keyboard has to offer. It might take a few sessions but it's sooo much more productive than piddling through.
      Congrats again and cheers!

Yamaha PSR SX900 does almost all that fro a third of the price. If someone needs all those features, to me that means that have not practiced enough scales and arpeggios and use sound color to cover up their lack of technique.

      @IamtheKingsman 5 лет назад +3

Actually it depends on what you want. The PSR series spans everything from rank beginners keyboards to really sophisticated, and marvelous semi professional PSR S instruments. Yes, some of them get to be a bit expensive. The Genos is the flag ship keyboard of Yamaha's arranger keyboards and really is not an inexpensive tool by any means. Actually, in October, Yamaha will be releasing the next generation of the PSR S line, and I can tell you this, I'm planning on buying the PSR SX900. I'd call it a Genos junior-it's that amazing.

    This is a 5500 bucks device !!!!
Just buy a MIDI controller (maybe an Alesis with 88 keys for 300 bucks), link it to the PC, download Kontact and the infinite sound library, also download Ivory for real pianos, and any workstation software.
Don't waste your money in a limited dinosaur keyboard and sequencer.

    • @thomaswild2957

how would your setup work for a "one man band" on live stage with improvised sessions? arrangers are quite good with all that styles stuff (intros, endings, fill in etc ) for that purpose.... interested to know how that would work on your setup

    • @LittleRichard1988

I agree for music production a midi controller and a sampler or VST instruments such as Kontakt, Sampletank or Halon 7
is perfect for music production. This is an arranger keyboard and it's not intended for that sort of use.

The Roland G70 it is better than the Genos even though it's older. The test showed that the sounds are absolutely identical it's like Yamaha cloned a Roland G70.I sold the Genos and bought back a Roland G70.Genos is not worth half the price that Roland has, it is cheaper and Genos eats for breakfast.

Err, okay. It always puzzles and irritates me why a demonstration of a new keyboard treats many features that have been there in past models like "oh my god this is great"! Like here e.g. the ability to control the sound in realtime with the knobs or sliders... COME ON! Why can you not say something like "of course as before you can do this...". And really leave the OMG factor to actually new features. This is one of many marketing blurbs that I personally would like to see buried and gone.

you cant buy talent, which is basically what you are asking lol, listen i along with 35 others have been involved with these machines for years as programmers (myself personally since 2007 on tyros 2) i have been made redundant now after tyros 6 as public name, code name genius hence when so different they decided should start a new chapter after tyros hence genos) so beond any comment here you are getting it from the horses mouth guys, korg are trying to bring out a new PAX machine to compete but they are nowhere close yet (even been offered a job many times by them lol), but at the end of the day this is the most versatile machine ever and only limitation is your tallent , so i personally find this question stupid, :) youl learn how to use the sequencng as you use it, more of a questio is are you atalented player.composer, mixer? or are you hoping a machine can make you seem like you have tallent? :) anyone on here who questions the machine i guarntee has never worked in keyboard/synth development, id bet my house on it, go try it yourself first before you comment or you sound an untallented stup or poor idiot, end of!!!

gimble - I’m glad you have talent & is an intelligent programmer. Not Everyone is fortunate enough like you unfortunately. I would caution you though to use your big brain and refrain from calling someone with a question about a product stupid, because it just makes you look like the one with the word stupid/88 written all over your forehead. I would bet my life Yamaha would not hire people like you who can actually call a customer stupid for asking a question about a product & if they did I’ll bet your ass would no longer work there. We’re not about to start arguing with you since you’re so smart, so be gone!!!

Finally got my hands on one to play and considering the price tag and my demo time with both the Korg Pa4X and Roland FA series, I was underwhelmed. The sounds are good, but honestly they're good on all of them. Yamaha added quite a big jump in the number of Mega Voices, Super Articulation voices, and Super Articulation 2 voices -- a bigger increase than we've seen with previous Tyros-to-Tyros upgrades, yet does it sound significantly better than the others, the answer is subjective to each person, but polling 17 different keyboard players during a blind test, none of them were able to correctly identify the Yamaha sounds as better when played over 4 different songs . The first things to jump out at me were the lack of intuitiveness and layout. It seemed counter-intuitive to find and do things in a live setting. The features seemed more geared to a studio than a live setting. Secondly, they market this as a workstation, yet it s has no daw integration at all, no real onboard sound editing features, only a few basic parameters, no audio over USB - The Tyros 5, Yamaha's top-of-the-line arranger keyboard did not have a built-in USB audio interface. The Genos doesn't either, baffling to me, and there is no pattern sequencer, also if you are looking at the sequencer on this, you'll find some disappointment in its limitations. To be honest, if I was gonna get something, price would come into play (as it always does). I would probably go with a PA4X. Why? It seems better built, is more compact (you could comfortably use it as a top tier in a two-board setup for function work), is sonically at least the equal of the Genos and it is just far more tweakable which is abundantly obvious if you compare them head on, and the price is $1500 less. If I truly wanted and had to have a workstation, the Roland FA series for the price is great value or simply get the Kronos if you want to spend more which is an amazing machine. I really hoped Yamaha had a good thing here with the huge let down of the Tyros 5 and the one sided aspect of the Montage. It turns out to me the Genos is just another arranger all too similar to the Tyros 5 for tastes.

I personally have Halion 6, the full version of Kontakt plus Abbey Road Drummer Collection. Some of Halion6's sounds like the saxophones are the same as
the saxophones on Tyros 2, even Genos uses those same sax samples which is good because I personally like Yamaha's samples even if they are a bit fake
sounding ( some of the Kontakt Factory library sounds are not that good ). I'm considering getting a Tyros 3 or Tyros 4 mainly because my computer is starting
to play up and if I ever have to reinstall everything I might not be able to get halion 6 back and I'm not going back to the SE version, also when I bought Halion
Symphonic Orchestra I ended up getting a refund because i couldn't get the licence to work. But I think Genos is a little out of my budget. The Super Articulation
is a neat feature to have. Maybe in the future I might buy some more Native Instruments libraries for Kontakt but for now I will stick with the Factory library,
Abbey Road Drummer Collection and freebies ( it's still worth having the full version of Kontakt for that alone ). I'm glad buying a Komplete midi controller
with a Komplete bundle worked out for you.

@@LittleRichard1988 Arrangers are cool if you're gigging and perform live and earn a living from touring to cover the cost of this machine plus your net profit. I am a music production guy and bought Genos mainly for production, thinking that it was cool for production, it is not! It's very limited and the samples aren't meant to be for production. The samples in arrangers aren't live recorded samples like in sample libraries because if that's the case, you'll end up having terrabytes of samples in Genos with terrabytes of internal storage. Instead, arrangers use "Modeling" which takes the original sound and mimic it from scratch using algorithms and crap. The result is low sized samples with close-to-original sound quality.
So my mistake is that I bought something wasn't intended for production but for live performance. I blame myself more than Yamaha for taking the decision of buying something wrong ,but I still blame Yamaha for their fake marketing by saying that it's a music production rig as well. I thought I could have a single production machine rather than having separate rigs like a computer, screens, mouse, keyboard, samples, midi controllers, here, there, and such. Then I realized that it's the only way to have these separate rigs if I want to produce something.
Finally, I faced HELL when I wanted to sell it. It took me 2.5 yrs to sell it because of course it's expensive and not everyone is able to buy something like that. So it's meant to buy it, perform it, enjoy it and not selling it. After I sold it, it was an unbelievable relief and luckily I haven't lost much money in selling it. I literally celebrated that day haha. I was in prison man.

    • @LittleRichard1988

@@Ahmad-Mounir44 In the end I didn't buy an arranger keyboard, partly because it's too expensive buying one just to do midi and
multi track sequencing. But arranger keyboards are not intended for sound recording they are only intended for people who are really good at playing live.
I agree it's very misleading for Yamaha to call Tyros and Genos workstations as they are arrangers. As I'm now unemployed I certainly can't afford to
take such a gamble on one of these hidious arranger keyboards because of the pain if trying to then sell it to get yourt money back, maybe if I hadn't
quit my job I may well have bought a Tyros 5 or maybe I would have bought a PSR-SX700 which is a lot cheaper and looks more like a traditional home
keyboard but even so. At least with my Yamaha PSR-295 which I hardly ever use I can put it in the zip bag, store it in the corner and forget about it.
I also think even some of the entry level PSRs have become more expensive.
If my computer ever did crash I don't see why reinstalling Halion 6 would be a problem as my licenses for everything I have ever purchased from Steinberg
are stored on my USB dongle and my Steinberg Download assistant account still has everything I have ever purchased and downloaded although with Cubase
Artist 7 reinstalling that would be easier as it's a CD ROM.
Update I ended up buying a new computer because my old computer started running very slow and I also had a problem with some VST plugins not working
correctly and as I also had to buy a new version of Cubase Artist 7 I also rebought Halion 6 and it all works fine on my new computer and maybe in the future
I might buy Kotakt 7 and some more Native Instruments libraries once I get my new computer to load all libraries from an external hard drive.

This is actually an arranger keyboard and it's perfect if your someone who plays the melody with one
hand the the auto accompaniment with the other. But in actual fact keyboards like Yamaha Montage,
MODX, Roland Fantom, Korg Kross are workstation/synths which are better geared towards music
production/midi sequencing if that's your thing. Hope this helps.

Terrific musicianship, thank you for this great video on a great keyboard. Your 'comping' during the swing (8:45), one chord per beat, is amazing! May I ask a question about the "chord loop" function? 20 years ago I used this function constantly on my Roland E-86 (made in 1994), to play or create the underlying chord progressions (often spontaneously), and then use two hands to play solos (LH on the modulation wheel or pitch bend, RH play saxophone or whatever); or, in a live setting, while leading worship I could establish a chord progression, and then physically depart from behind the keyboard, walk out to the front of the stage, and sing and lead the people in worship WHILE the E-86 kept playing the progression - and then after a while, go back behind the keyboard and seamlessly pick up in midstream (to play reharms or go into the chorus or B-section, etc). It was wonderful!
Fast-forward 25 years, and now I use a Tyros 5, and it's a great keyboard, BUT sadly it doesn't allow for either of these powerful and useful functions. My Left Hand is forever trapped having to play the chord progressions, with only spits and spurts darting over the left to adjust the mod or pitchbend wheels, and always having to zip back to play the new chord on the down-beat (which is often the very moment when mod or pitchbending is most needed in an effective solo). And another thing: with the Tyros, my body is physically trapped behind the keyboard. I can't depart from behind the Tyros to get more physically present to lead or exhort the people. Alas, how I miss the arranger loop function! (I'm much less effective as a live performer without it.)
So I'm very excited to see that the Genos 2 has the arranger loop!! Way to go Yamaha! So now.... I wonder: since this appears to be primarily a software update (and not a hardware feature that requires a separate set of buttons, like on the E86) ... could this feature possibly be programmed into an updated firmware or software version for the Tyros 5? Does anyone have any idea? I don't really want to leave my Tyros 5 yet, it's still an awesome keyboard; plus, the learning curve to learn the Genos is as much a deterrent as is the price to upgrade from the Tyros. So hopefully Yamaha will see fit to program this arranger loop function into the Tyros software or firmware, and not force us who REALLY need this feature, to buy a Genos2. Would love to hear from you or anyone who knows, about this. Thanks. Keep up with the awesome music!

2 BIG FLAWS the GENOS and TYROS' do not have are:
    1. the RESET BUTTON to reset to BEAT 1 when you don't have PRO SINGERS who sang out of beat. For a nearly 6K board, this is unacceptable.
    2. the Other flaw, is to be able to adjust velocity individual drum sounds in REAL TIME NOT unless you stop your playing and make adjustments unlike the KETRON KEYBOARDS do. PLEASE YAMAHA, fix or add these features.

This is a great looking keyboard workstation, but I am so grateful music sound industry has change in the favor of implementation of computer producing. What I mean, "overprice is a understatement". It should be "outrageous price!" for this unit but I am not surprised by the price, it Yamaha. For my many years of being music producer, Yamaha, Tascam, and Roland have been doing this same price scheme for over the years. Not only that, selling units with no upfront pc connect but you have to buy an additional slot unit to transfer your music. Then after buying the unit for thousands of $$, the company offers an sound update for $$$$ after you spent $$$$ for the unit. And to top that off, when the unit become discontinued, (and it will be soon) they do not provide any software updates after you have spent $$$$. I know this is a business but I am so thankful for the change of music industry game. Companies like Yamaha choked the inspired but broke producers and also their sound library is customized to a particular type of genres style. I dare wouldn't buy this keyboard neither do I want it for free. It will hurt my workflow. This keyboard is designed for live performance not pre-production.

yamaha MUST sell loads of these $3k+ arrangers but I've never in my 20+ years of full-time professional keyboard playing have ever met a single person who actually owns one. weird. I've seen them in use in non-english speaking restaurants and on cruise ships. I sometimes suspect it's a secret weapon of commercial library music producers- and I mean literally kept secret. Just some thoughts

... when the Korg Kronos gets attention through reviews and comparisons with various synthesizers and workstations such as montage, motif and genos to name a few comparisons with Yamaha, all the genos gets is reviews and self praise. The three review videos that I checked out ( including this one) is by the same reviewer, all three being done by the Yamaha's senior manager , whereas Kronos had a way larger audience

If Yamaha genos had more sample pads like Roland FA series, an intuitive looper, sequencer, better sound engine and more support for manual bass part for external connectivity to organ pedal board and appeal back to the organists or yester year. Then they might on to something. On a positive the drums on Yamaha are very good indeed.

Put "flagship" in the name of your product, ask unbelievable price 2 times as much as the same keyboard without few gimmicks, and everyone will get crazy to buy it.
With all that said, Genos is really great arranger, just not without some flaws and compromises even with this price.

Excellent instrument. Gamble hit the nail on the head. This instrument can do it all, but it still comes down to 1) can you play, 2) can you write music and 3) will you spend the time to fully learn the full instrument. I've heard people with the Korg Kronos not sound too good because they were not good piano players. Yet I've heard someone use an old portable cheap keyboard and make it sound great.

Question: I have experience with both low-end and high-end keyboards and have discovered--to my absolute horror--that some high-end instruments (in particular, from a well-known name that shall go unmentioned) actually do not have the ability to allow a SOUND THAT SUSTAINS (such as violin) to DECAY when a key is RELEASED WITH the sustain pedal DEPRESSED. So, I must explicitly ask: Does Genos have this ability? I didn't hear any strings decay in Martin's presentation of a string sound near the end, so I'm a little concerned. It so happens that this ability is EMINENTLY USEFUL for realistic performances of sustaining sounds.
