I said it in 1964. I’ll say it again now. My Top 4 British invasion bands are The Beatles, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, and The Who. Thank you Ray, Dave, Pete (RIP), and Mick for the magical musical memories still turning in the windmills of my mind, all day and all of the night.
Awesome song! I remember hearing this on the radio back in the early 1990s and being very very impressed at the performance. Why didn't everyone make it a super hit like it deserved?
Hello. That is me, the girl in the video. I have very happy memories working with Ray on this. I wanted to keep all the clothes! I thought the song was great, and was really disappointed that the song didn't do better.
Hi Helen That is really interesting. Can you tell us more about the making of the video. - like where it was filmed and do you know the meaning of the man in the magic goggles? Yes, a shame the song didn't do better - it is a terrific song and a great video - but not surprising as it got no airplay and of course the track wasn't even on the original UK release of the To The Bone album, which was madness. Thanks - Geoff
Geoff Lewis Hi Geoff. Re the Googles - I seem to remember they were something that Ray had found or bought and that he was keen to use them, although I can't remember his logic about them fitting into the song. All the internal stuff was filmed in a North London Studio (if I remember rightly) and I can't for the life of me remember where the external shots were taken. I do remember it was cold! We also filmed in Trafalgar Square but those scenes didn't make the final edit.
Helen L Thanks Helen. It really is a terrific video - both funny and poignant. It seems to me that the goggles are some sort of X-ray specs - the wearer seems to be seeing what is going on in the flat - he certainly gets shaken up when you and hippie Ray are fighting over the union jack. All the best - Geoff
This song together with the song "Animal" must be the last studio songs The Kinks recorded in their career, and what a way to finish the story of The Kinks! Two killer songs with pungent lyrics, strong melody line and great guitar playing!
In the back of a record rack There's a old double pack Twelve inches and black With an old crumpled cover But every track is stacked And it takes me back To the one who caused this melancholy mood And every single groove Cuts me to the bone Yeah, she rocks me to the bone I took her back to my bachelor flat While the stereo played for two She unwrapped her gift And played me a riff And said, "this old record was just made for you" Then we danced to songs of passion and The singer's velvet tones On the gramaphone While the record played She rocks me to the bone Knocks me to the bone Those those rock n' roll romantic songs Played all summer long And she rocks me to the bone Knocks me to the bone. Yeah, she rocks me to the bone Yeah, she rocks me to the bone In dreams she's smiling in slow motion Devouring all of my emotion Angels singing rock 'n' roll While demons take away my soul Voices sound, her image fades Every time that record plays She rocks me to the bone Knocks me to the bone In my back room there's an old 45 That we played all summer long Shakin the beams so loud it covered up the screams When lover's harmony went oh so wrong And in every word emotion is torn And blood flows down the drain Like she opened up a vein And cut me to the bone Yeah, she rocks me to the bone And now i'm just a prisoner In that stereo Hi-Fi jail The needle pierced just like a nail As she rocks me to the bone Knocks me to the bone Do do do do do do do She rocks me to the bone Yeah, she rocks me to the bone Yeah, she rocks me to the bone
ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK SONGS EVER WRITTEN.AND NOT JUST FROM THE KINKS. AND OF COURSE THE BRILLIANT MIND OF RAY DAVIES ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS IN ROCK MUSIC.. THE LYRICS, ARE PHOENOMINAL AND THE GUITAR PLAYING AND STYLINGS FROM RAYS YOUNGER BROTHER, ARE GREAT AS WELL.. ITS JUST A KILLER SONG.. YOU CANT HELP BUT WANT TO ROCK.. RAY BABY YOU ROCK ME TO THE BONE.. I LOVE YOU BABY. ROSIE. ( WE MET TWO TIMES ONCE IN 69.. YOU WERE A BEAUTIFUL ENGLISH BOY..AND SECOND TIME IN THE NINETIES../
The Kinks are in my top 3 or 4 bands of all time. I was lucky enough to have met Ray and Dave (1979). Just such a wealth of great music. The one thing about them where I think they made a bad decision was, beginning in 1972, they started making album covers showing just Ray or generic artwork of things or scenes. Only counting albums of new material & live albums, from Everybody's in Showbiz through To the Bone, there were 6 album covers featuring just Ray, 1 featuring just Ray & Dave, 9 featuring no one in The Kinks, and just 2 showing the whole group. The message was that The Kinks were not a "band." They were Ray Davies' faceless backup musicians. And that was highly unfortunate that they went that route. In every band, there are always those 1 or 2 guys who do most of the heavy lifting, but for the sake of band unity and teamwork, 95% of bands downplay each member's role in all their optics. The Kinks turned that all on its head, and I think it hurt their legacy somewhat. Most of the fans knew that Ray was the primary writer and singer. We didn't need the album covers to emphasize the point just in case we had somehow missed it.
This tune was one of their very BEST...yet ,little to no airplay...its' for ALL Music Lovers and a freak'n shame so many people have'nt heard it !!! ROCK F8538'N ON!~!!!!!
The lyrics cut me to the bone! Ray Davies would've been in the RR Hall of Fame on lyrics alone; but his stage shows were legendary, not to mention the musical innovation that the Kinks inspired.
This is one of my favorite songs.. Kinks.. brilliant Ray...its so rock and roll.. Love the words the music.. "She Rocks me to the BOne" I think this one of the great ROck songs.. Definitely, prooves that the Kinks may have written mostly about the Life in ENgland and everyday life in England... but this goes back to their roots int eh begining when Ray wrote about Girls and sex and romance.. Yes full circle moment here.. I love the rocky side of Ray. its so sexy.. Daves guitar tot. rocks
Ray says that the original title for this song was " 12 inches and black" so he thought he better change it !! Rock bands come, rock bands go but Ray Davies goes on forever, All day and all of the night......
Seems like it's folie a deux between Ray the Kinks front man, and Ray, the loser whose life revolves around the girl, a record player, a TV, and fantasies of rock stardom. Which is which? At one point there's an album cover with the Loser with his arm around the girl, and Kink Ray is the wallflower. Other times, Kink Ray gives the finger to the Loser as he takes the girl into the bedroom. Dave is outside, doing the photos for the next album, to be based on the Loser's life. It's a cool concept.
God I love this song. I'm trying to figure out what's going on outside with the guy hanging out with Dave wearing the goggles or gas mask. The shopping cart containing the tuba. And why the photo at the end? It's like Dave and goggle-man are outside observers watching this romance fall apart, LOL.
I agree, it is a bit puzzling. Someone has suggested that the weird goggles are seeing what is going on in the apartment - the goggle-man gets thrown about during the tussle between hippie Ray and the girl. The contents of the shopping cart seem to be musical debris - records, tapes etc. The "tuba" is an old gramophone playing the song. No idea why Dave takes the photo - maybe he is making an album of pics of Ray's failed relationships :-) Watch out for that motor-bike, goggle-man! :-)
Thanks for introducing me to this video. I have owned this LP since the 1990s but never encountered this video. Love the song.
Greatest band of all times!!!!
My favorite band 🇬🇧 🎶 of all time 📀🎼 📻 THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GREAT MUSIC 🎸. 🎹 🎺 🎤 🌹 😎

The Kinks are the Kings
Awesome song! I remember hearing this on the radio back in the early 1990s and being very very impressed at the performance. Why didn't everyone make it a super hit like it deserved?
Wow, it doesn't get any better than this. Long Live The Kinks.

Hi Helen , I was in my 20s when this came out , I heard it on 96.9 FM in sacramento , loved it from the first time I heard it.
well such a pretty girl....can throw a mean pizza...familiar with that for real...nice vid and tune..but can you cook..lol
The Kinks were superb - to the very end.
This song together with the song "Animal" must be the last studio songs The Kinks recorded in their career, and what a way to finish the story of The Kinks! Two killer songs with pungent lyrics, strong melody line and great guitar playing!
Yes, great guitar playing by Dave Davies. As always, great tone.
This song just ROCKS!
Helen, you did great, I love this song and Ive been a fan since 64....should of been a hit - one of their best EVER. GSTK
Yes Helen, you did do great. Fate. Takes me back....a time never forgotten so it's timeless and immortal. See you next time, kid.
A tremendous Rock and Roll song which no other band in history could match!!
In the back of a record rack
There's a old double pack
Twelve inches and black
With an old crumpled cover
But every track is stacked
And it takes me back
To the one who caused this melancholy mood
And every single groove
Cuts me to the bone
Yeah, she rocks me to the bone
I took her back to my bachelor flat
While the stereo played for two
She unwrapped her gift
And played me a riff
And said, "this old record was just made for you"
Then we danced to songs of passion and
The singer's velvet tones
On the gramaphone
While the record played
She rocks me to the bone
Knocks me to the bone
Those those rock n' roll romantic songs
Played all summer long
And she rocks me to the bone
Knocks me to the bone.
Yeah, she rocks me to the bone
Yeah, she rocks me to the bone
In dreams she's smiling in slow motion
Devouring all of my emotion
Angels singing rock 'n' roll
While demons take away my soul
Voices sound, her image fades
Every time that record plays
She rocks me to the bone
Knocks me to the bone
In my back room there's an old 45
That we played all summer long
Shakin the beams so loud it covered up the screams
When lover's harmony went oh so wrong
And in every word emotion is torn
And blood flows down the drain
Like she opened up a vein
And cut me to the bone
Yeah, she rocks me to the bone
And now i'm just a prisoner
In that stereo Hi-Fi jail
The needle pierced just like a nail
As she rocks me to the bone
Knocks me to the bone
Do do do do do do do
She rocks me to the bone
Yeah, she rocks me to the bone
Yeah, she rocks me to the bone

Every time I hear this song, it "cuts me to the bone." It's just breathtaking.
so f***´n good :) Bands like The Kinks will always be loved and remembered, what they play on radio today no one will remember a year from now!
This tune was one of their very BEST...yet ,little to no airplay...its' for ALL Music Lovers

ROCK F8538'N ON!~!!!!!
Ray wrote this song for me, and ALL of the record collectors everywhere...
Ray's voice...👍
One of my all time Kinks songs.
The lyrics cut me to the bone! Ray Davies would've been in the RR Hall of Fame on lyrics alone; but his stage shows were legendary, not to mention the musical innovation that the Kinks inspired.
Such positive responses--great just great- I really Dig this song to
JUST FOUND IT FANTASTIC VID AND , English through & through... thanks Dave & Ray
one of the best kinks songs i ever love them :)

Yes, aside from everything else, Ray is very sexy just being himself 💕👍
This is a gorgeous song.
should have been a hit!!
If there is any justice in the world, it most certainly would have been a massive hit!
Totally agree, especially considering some of today's popular music, aka rubbish.
Good humor and some really funny stuff from ray & dave. kinks music will live on forever! Great video clip!
Real KINKS
Would eat beans on toast with the kinks any day
Ray was made for the MTV video era. great great writer
CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
love it..
Kinks.....Ray and Dave Davies.....so cool.Way and above Beatles/Stones.
Great song and video!
I adore this version.
@ethifanman Damn right we do-- ticks me off!!!!!
I love the Kinks-- superb
Hi Jon. It was on the US (2 CD) version of the To The Bone album. Strangely, as it is the title track, not on the UK version.
Exactly, "Strangely..."
5 million stars ...
Good question. There was some discussion of him a couple of years ago - see the Kastoffkinks comment below.
@Leifura , Ray and Chrissie were never married.
Actually, I think this gorgeous song is about his separation and divorce from his first wife, Rasa.
Ray says that the original title for this song was " 12 inches and black" so he thought he better change it !!
Rock bands come, rock bands go but Ray Davies goes on forever, All day and all of the night......
Thanks for reposting this:) I used to have it but the quality was awful.
Love this song and this video. What do you all make of the hazmat attire on the guy outside with Dave, if anything? Toxic relationship?
The first melody and lyrics of this song reminds me of another song exactly. I just can't place it...
heard this song many years ago on the white room ch4 what album is it from? this is a gem of a song top quality! ray best writer ever.

i think that bands today should continue to rip of the kinks, especially this song, its all there good for
It looks like the set used in Do it Again!
lazerating rifts
'Live as you will have wished
to have lived when you are dying'...
waiting for the soda stream
Two shine in silver lightnin
The theatre lost out on a great natural actor/ham in Ray Davies.
Which means us music lovers lucked out.
Ok you seven gronk who don't like this song...put your emails down for a special message!~
God I love this song.

Is this song about Chrissie Hynde?
I have always had a suspicion that it was about Christie, but I don’t think Ray has ever confirmed it.
@ethifanman well said, you nailed it! very frustrating.....
I agree, it is a bit puzzling.

Watch out for that motor-bike, goggle-man! :-)
This song is written about Rays divorce from Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.
I always wondered if this song was written about Chrissie Hynde
1000 of the 106000 views would be mine

New music coming from the kinks - ray looks like John Lennon in this video.
Then we NEED to WRITE WRITE WRITE for the air time.
This is about the only Kinks I like, besides Lola. Never heard it before.
The only track you like besides Lola? Ridiculous!🤨
I’ve just realise there are no Dave vocals. Here. That’s why it sounds so different
You mean you have a version of To The Bone that has Dave vocals on it?
@@geofflewis1142 no, I mean that Dave’s vocals are ever present in pretty much every kinks song. None here. Gives it a very different sound
@@tuffb2687 Oh, I see - sorry. I was hoping there was another version out there, although it is hard to imagine this version could be bettered.
If you're comment couldn't get any better you're a fan of Johnny Cash to :D
