The Kinks were an English rock band formed in London in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. The Kinks' music drew from a wide range of influences, including American R&B and rock and roll initially and later adopting British music hall, folk, and country. The band gained a reputation for reflecting English culture and lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' wittily observational writing style. The Kinks and the songs of Ray Davies are now rightfully established as a great British institution. From the opening riff of You Really Got Me, The Kinks’ influence as pioneers in heavy metal, power pop, conceptual albums, and theatrical shows can be detected in much modern music.
This, and much more, can be seen on this RUclips channel exclusively devoted to these true British originals.

This is in my humble opinion, the greatest song in rock history.
One of. For sure!
A song for a band that puts the fan ahead of the Band
I just thought about this song today and I loved it brings me back to Carefree time in 1978 at Long Beach Island, New Jersey
One of the best, at least. Ray wrote it when Dave was nattering on about quitting the Kinks. Kind of a weird scenario...but listen to it - if Dave left, there was no Ray either. Fifteen years later, the brothers authored "Hatred/a Duet" about the same tied-together torment they had for one another. One of my all-time favorites ~
Listen at 3:55...the hidden call-and-response after "Dan is a fan" - Ray's low-end rhythm line, followed by Dave's lead line...exquisite.
how can this song only have 5 comments??... i know why because everyone knows Lola and not much else. The Kinks are so friggin great and diverse...listen to Muswell Hillbilies you want to hear diverse songs...love that album.
GSTK- 700 songs in their catalog- 100’s just as good as their hits!!!!
one of my all time favorite classic rock songs by any band
David I had 2 cassette tapes on 1971-72 RAM by Wings and MUSWELL HILLBILLIES by the kinks aboard a U.S, aircraft carrier off the coast of Vietnam- my job was clerical and I was able to listen to these 2 tapes via a headset back to back 10 hours a day for 10 months out at sea to pass the time - no one has listened to these albums more than me.
The most underrated band ever
I grew up knowing and loving these songs. Like I'm not like everybody else, cone dancing, and destroyer too, even though it's well known
"There's a guy on my block, he lives for rock
He plays records day and night
And when he feels down, he puts some rock 'n' roll on
And it makes him feel all right
And when he feels the world is closing in
He turns his stereo way up high
He just spends his life, living in a rock 'n' roll fantasy
He just spends his life, living on the edge of reality"
I am that guy on his block. This is such an anthem for all us music-obsessed oddballs, is it not?
And when he feels the world is closing in, he turns his stereo way up high.
Scrolling comments while the song plays. At the exact moment Ray sang them, I saw your post. Good timing, I've always been drawn to that line, myself.
Dang deep shit here...
This song very much reminds me of an old friend with thousands of rock record albums.
Rock & Roll classic.
I saw The Kinks three different tours starting in June 1978. Today I searched for a Kinks setlist, and this song was included. I still have the original "Misfits" LP released May 1978. I forgot about this song. It is so great, as if I discovered a treasure.
Damn, this band was terrific.
I love the Kinks music by geniuses Ray & Dave Davies since I was 15 years old. They're the most talented music composers and great rest Rock n Roll bands of our time. They're always underrated but are so talented. And our great music still lives in our hearts and memories. I don't know how I could have grown up without their music as an inspiration to my life especially when I was going through a rough period during the 60s and 70s. The Rolling Stones, Beatles, Tom Jones, Joe Crocker, Petula Clark, the Zombies, Otis Redding were all greats of early rock n roll and still live in our hearts and are sung & played by hundreds of thousands fans who still love their unique and effectively çool songs.
Everyone who grew up in the 60s and 70s can relate to this song. I remember when music was the only thing I thought about.
This song is magic.
I'm Too Free And I Won't Let Go!! Words to love and to live by... What an amazing song through and through....
I just heard this on the radio.. reminded me of the music my Dad played when I was growing up in the 80s..I had to Google it and I'm sure this is one of the songs I listened to as a toddler, it hit me right on the chest. Amazing Song.
Look up tear jerker. This band is holy
Someday this song will be played at my life Memorial❤
Kent Crawford.
For all we know….
Proud to be a Kinks fan. Great songs and a lot of them.
I remember when this song first came out. My brother was Dan and I was in a rock n roll band. We first heard it on the home from work and fell in love
with it.
No, this is a fantastic song that every so often plays in my head?
This song is about you, yes you!
I Think many of us are living in a rock'n'roll fantasy... and the world rolls well
I'm a friend of Dan. We so enjoy living on the edge of reality.
The Kinks songs were always about experiences they had, not about some fantasy they made up.
this is one of my favorite
It's a great song that everyone can relate to. In some ways we all become prisoners to both our success and failures. Finding your way out is the key to a happier life.
2024 and forever 🎉
There’s a great song I remember hearing this in 1978 when I was working in Long Beach Island at a restaurant restaurant this song always got me through my shifts
I want to live in a rock & roll fantasy.
I do live in a rock & roll fantasy. Me and my 5 guitars and the songs I've written that nobody will ever hear.
the 70's are over
Oh, me too! MEEE TOOOOO!!
Kinks....oh my ❤❤❤❤❤❤greatest feelings
What a great song, Ray really wrote this one from his heart, and they continued for almost another 20 years after this came out. A lot of us have been Dan in parts of our lives and bands like the Kinks were there to keep us going, I'll always be grateful for that. This song means even more now than it did then with all of the bands and musicians that have sold out and are just cashing in, especially someone like Springsteen, but Ray and Dave never sold out, they just couldn't get along. I sure wish they could one last time though, I'm sure they'd sound just as good.
Your in luck - ray just gave an interview and he says new music is coming….called Folk-Rock Musical! GSTK….700 songs in their catalog.
@@lannydante9390 Cool, I hadn't seen that interview, that's great! They are too talented to not be making music, I know Ray put out some Americana/folk music a few years ago that was good.
@@ds440RB it’s coming out this week in a music magazine- sorry forgot the name
@lannydante9390 Cool, I'll try to look for it, thank you!
@@ds440RB the magazine is UNCUT.
Classic
what a clear sound, nice to hear 🎼
Never leave your Parents basement. It's a scary world folks.
The Kinks.Happy 60th gents. Another one of the UK's National Treasures. Also, Jim Ignatowski (Jim from "Taxi" the TV show's) fav band.
BRAVO
This song is me 🤘
That's how I try to spend my time.
... liivn' on the edge of reality...
So beautiful.
Oh but you and me keep thinking that the world's just passing us by. Love this so g from beginning to end.
Such an important song from my youth!
Great song. Actually the entire album is.👍
I did this as a teen - got me through a lot of BS in life .
Great song.
Seen the kinks June 20 th 1977, 10 days after high school graduation. Wish I could see them again 4:58
My first 45 latch key kid home. And found this.
Still felt kinks in jersey
One of the sweetest most beautiful kink socks. I stand by my comment.
My mother had this album, she loved this song especially this song my mother believed this was about elvis maybe whos know
Yes Elvis had recently died. However more ELVES WERE COMING!
One of the four ultra great Rock Groups out the '60s in my opinion: The Beatles, The Who, The Rollingstones, & The Kinks. Some would include Led Zeppelin and maybe even The Beach Boys which is fair enough.
There were so many great bands back then with their own unique sound and great song writing & musicianship!
The Kinks had so many great hits! Out of the four or even six mentioned (if you include Led Zeppelin and The Beach Boys), the most underappreciated. People should check out RUclips for The Kinks! Those guys were great!
The keyboard organ sounds very similar to Paul McCartney’s “With a Little Luck”
No hay palabras.
Ok i get it
I can't say much more God don't save the Queen but save the the Kinks
New music coming from either ray or the kinks called Folk-Rock Musical.
Brilliant but this song is about me
About me too. My voice sucks😢
This is much better than LOLA❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love the Beatles, but there’s nothing in their storied catalog that hits me as squarely in the chest as this song, and it’s not even my favorite cut on this album (that would be “Misfits”).
❤❤ gosto muito dessa, mas prefiro a do Bad Company 🎉🎉
Still bet chills from this masterpiece
Great song so fricken underrated it's down right sick. Great band unfortunately they were around with Beatles and stones and a lot of great bands. That's about the same as being a great boxer but dealing with the likes of ali foreman and about a dozen other greats. But if the kinks aren't in music hall of game then they should be. Are they? Someone tell me they are
I know this is off the subject but can anyone tell me how led Zeppelin got their name. I know the answer but do you
Its about Ray's brother Dave Davies
Living on the edge of reality.. I hooked up... But my skin color.. made me rejected
An elevator smash!! 😂
Because "the great unwashed" do not know fantastic music?
some guy out there named dan is listening to this for the first time.
Yes
This is in my humble opinion, the greatest song in rock history.
It’s definitely a contender, Big Star - kangaroo is another contender ruclips.net/video/a8xPHS-n5Gw/видео.htmlsi=bfYL9wCRJ9EKQLZT the way it’s constantly on the verge of collapse, the honesty & shame of the lyrics that all men can relate to. I think Davies & Chilton both have the ability to analyze their own behavior/failings & the courage to put it out there which is what makes their songs so timeless.
That was awesome what you said
