oh please if the 'district' doesnt allow this they're just being willfully mean spirited. a 'policy' isnt some sentient being. here's an idea - ' change the policy. problem solved.

I think the issue would be if they accidentally missed someone that should be included, needing permission from family to do so (some families might be offended if include their kid), and even if a student died in a matter that might be questionable or cause outrage for example: A student who shot and killed 20 students before killing themselves than the shooter parents citing district policy that they want their child honored at graduation among the victims.

If this is the way …
If this is truly the way that district political leaders interpreted the usage of this “policy”, I suggest a much deeper analysis of this and all other policies - be audited.
This young woman had the goal of graduating and earning her degree. It was her decree that she would receive a degree to inspire not only other students and faculties worldwide -
As it should turn out, I am in Austria, and I am now aware of this smiling and beautiful young woman; I cannot imagine how much she has done to make us aware of the dangers of political interference in our daily lives.
This policy has become a symbol of our society, in the United States.
    Bye for now,
    Riki
I am harshly reminded of the importance of being a student is to ensure that these built in
    to every system

Please allow the school to publicly vote to make an exception of this policy. If the students poll to make an exception then there is no reason not to allow this. I kinda cant believe a students name isn't read regardless - she still earned her diploma. If the reason is to protect the students from further trauma then consider the possibility that it doesnt actually work. Real life includes having to deal with real life events, including loss and grief. Honoring those who've passed is a healthier way to let go and move on than dismissing their memory. She earned this just like the rest of her class and she deserves it - living or not.

Yeah you know what i try to lean towards supporting school districts especially in a state where public support of schools and school districts is desperately needed but everyone else commenting is right - why the heck is this even a policy? Maybe things like this is part of the reason public support is lacking. This policy doesn't make sense. I'd love to know why it exists...?
