In this guitar lesson I will demonstrate how to play the epic intro to "Creeping Death" by Metallica.
Now I don't plan on only teaching this part of the song. I will definitely be finishing the whole thing note-for-note. I just always gauge which songs to finish first based of the support they get. So if you wanna see the rest of these lessons let me know!
The song starts with some epic metal stylings creating a huge a suspenseful sound. Over that part we have some harmony guitar lines start to "creep" in. Hehe...
I will show you the bottom harmony part in this video lesson. From there we will play a short power chord sequence that sets up the main rapid down picked riff of the song.
Performing this main riff is no easy feat. James Hetfield has always been known as having perhaps the greatest picking hand in all of metal. At least when it comes to fast and tight muted down stokes, which are a staple of most forms of metal guitar.
Achieving the speed required to perform this riff up to speed can be quite the challenge. One good thing though is that the riff has and ending that consists of a little legato lick played in the left hand. As short as that little legato lick is, it gives your picking hand a decent enough amount of time to recover before having to perform the fast downstrokes again.
It's amazing how such a quick little picking pause can completely change how challenging the riff is to play. The hardest aspect of this fast down stroked muted style found in most metal is when you have to continue to play it for an extended period of time. It is a lot easier to keep your technique together in short bursts.
James Hetfield has one of those right hands that would allow him to probably play this riff for 3 hours straight. The reason he can do that is because he keeps his picking hand extremely relaxed. That is the key to mastering this style of rhythm.
So have fun with this intro and I hope to be back here soon to finish the entire song for ya! :)
Carl..
learning this song makes you appreciate just how much of an absolute beast james hetfield is on the guitar
Domt you mean kirk?
@@thatstutulife6084 have you ever tried to keep up with the rhythm guitar through the whole song?
There is somedays when i can play the main riff and somedays i cant
i think we need more drugs
It's a matter of wether or not your hand feels like downpicking the whole song
and work
Same here
do the massage things carl showed on his theory channel, mabye that works?
best guitar teacher in youtube. I've literally learned half of all my songs from this guy. God Bless this awesome mucisian, and Rock On!!!! :)
+Rock21 thanks a bunch! More Metallica coming this weekend! :)

12? Damn...
im 12 been playing for 9 months and 365 is my go to!!!! we are soul twins!!!!!! oh and metallica is my fav 2!!!!!!! OMG
im 15 and ive beeen playing for 9 years
Aezri It's find that you like Metallica, but please try not to mention your age. It makes you come off as a special snowflake who thinks they're better than the kids at school because they like older music
I can never nail that hammer-on...
Don't over think it
you should hit the fret board a little harder hope this helps :)
Same here. I really struggle to get a loud, clean sound by hammering. Especially, if I have to do it very fast during a song part ..
Pun intended
@@xKisukeX96 try turning up the gain/distortion
I'm 14 and I can play this full song and full Holy Wars. Thanks Carl!
That's so cool
Very impressive!!! Im 21 and I cant even play symphony of destruction😅
@Cameron Yea
14? Well 16 by the time I'm seeing this. 2 years younger than me and I can't even play wake up dead
doubt it
I actually figured out how to do the intro by myself wow.
Nice
I figured the breakdown by myself
Those are the best kinds of feelings
That's me with basically every Metallica song
@@chrispguitar2698 nothing beats it
The end of that last bit on the A string is classic Sabbath I reckon, awesome
rammstevie Never noticed that until you said it. Sounds nearly identical to the hammer/pull on from the National Acrobat riff. I knew they were Sabbath fans, but that’s still pretty cool.
Thanks so much man, great lesson. Being self taught I learned Creeping Death at 3/4 speed a while back but I could never really nail the 2-3-2h3h2h0 part, explained wonderfuly
Thanks for all these recent Metallica tutorials dude.
Absolutely w/out a doubt the most Amazingly Patient Thorough and Accurate
Teacher on the tube there is! So thankful i can go and play whatever it is I've learned, with total confidence that this i how it is played right.
Much thanks to my Sensei Browns knowledge.

Never thought I'd play creeping death but learnt this riff in 5 mins, I guess my playing has come a long way and I have carl to thank for that
how long have you been playing for?
@@khalilhammoud1854 20 months
one of their best songs. That intro is incredible!
2:00 I love how his guitar made that cartoonish sound
I can’t watch it without imagining a banana peel 😂
Great Lesson Carl!!

ps: LIKE THIS SO CARL CAN SEE IT PLZ
From Roger Brown to Carl Brown!! Thanks for all the lessons! We all really appreciate your efforts!!
You are the one and only for me, the only online guitar teacher who really worked for me! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!
I’ve been trying to learn this riff for years! Just you slowing it down and walking through it slowly helped me tons! Thank you!
Learned and completed in matter of 10min. Thanks a lot!
thank you, best way of teaching with patience and simplicity
if you’re playing with only one guitarist on the intro for the harmony if you play 7 on the A string and 5 on the D string then slide to 5 on the A string and 4 on the D string it sounds like the recording hope this helps👍
N C no i’m saying play minor triads instead of single notes
@@josephharley7642 Oh sorry, I didn't read it carefully
Carl you are the best ..i am learning alot from you increasing my riffs and getting further in my song ..the best teacher ..i am already up to over 16 riffs now
First song I’m learning on my new electric guitar!!! I’ve been using your videos since I was ten years old, thanks for an awesome tutorial as always.
I assume after 2 years you finally got it.
Ain't no way you did at full speed when new to picking electric guitar
@@Kinkoms I got it within a few weeks. I’m not a beginner, just got the new guitar lol :]
here's a tip from Hetfield for anyone trying to play this song:
Try practicing the riff as fast as you can for a few days, doesn't have to sound like it does on the song it jus has to be 2x faster. If you do that and go back to the original speed it'll seem alot slower and easier.
How in god's name does James sing while playing this. Especially when you consider they typically play is three times faster live. PS- Great video, love the all the camera angles, well done and thanks!
I'm 44, and I've been trying to play Metallica since I was 14. I have never arrived at an answer to this question. Pondering some of the stuff Dave Mustaine does just raises further questions.
I'll be contributing soon! I love how you have all the different cameras so I can see what both hands are doing as well as the description!!
Hi Carl, you can really explain, show and teach. Clear and brief, no show off from your side. You are simply very good.
Million thanks for this legendary song of my childhood. Now I can play it (after 30 years) :)
I come here when I’m to lazy to read tabs, I’m never disappointed by the quality of video
you do the best lessons! can you do the rest?
+The Real Eric Mitchell Yep.. I will be finishing up the Creeping Death lessons this week. :)
***** oh ok thanks
+GuitarLessons365Song plzz do the rest!
Best youtuber ever give him 100M subs
Yay I can play the main riff but why is it so hard to play and sing the song? Sometimes it gets so frustrating that James can play such complicated stuff and sing
This is a class act lesson and your a legend Carl 👍
As always clear precise lessons, keep on rocking
Please make ' When a blind man cries ' by metallica. Please i cant find a proper tutorial for this song but its one of my favourites. Thanks

+MetClub TV didn't expect to see you here oh and if you read this hello
+Mike Merifield hey mike follow us on RUclips
just looked at your channel your not the real met club but still your a fan and im a fan so its cool
Thanks alot man. Good stuff. One of my favorite songs
My right forearm and wrist are burning in ways I didn’t even know were possible after attempting to play this at its record tempo😂
Looks easy.....It's not, only James can make it sound perfect...Damnit James!
A small thing which I noticed while listening to the song -
The Plam mute sounds like the note slightly higher than E but lower than F. It is this thing which gives it the Egyptian or the Phrygian Tone feel. In the intro.
Probably the muting is slightly down the bridge.
Because the song is related to the egyptian myth! "Born to serve the pharaoh heed onto his ever words!"
man I love your lessons especially your Metallica lessons
It was kind of struggling of a simple riff but i got it. Good job.
Your lessons are great!!!!! Please teach the rest of the song!!!!!
This is a fantastic lesson, thank you!
Hey you should do the rest of creeping death
Hey Carl, can you do lessons for Trivium songs ?
When you get this it really makes you feel like a badass. Thx carl.
James Bellflower not too hard to learn on your own man
You are awesome! My favorite Metallica song
Please do the rest of the song it's awesome and I really want to learn it
This song fucking rocks and is super fun to play (like all Metallica songs). Great tutorial per usual!
Great lesson Carl! Can you do the rest of the song please. I can never get enough Metallica! Thanks!
You can knock out any riff and explain it brilliantly top notch lesson...its an aggressive riff..💀💀
I play it in drop C# in other places to give unique sounds meaner and heavier
Your an excellent teacher my dude! Hey will you do Escape?
Great lesson Carl
Yes me too best teacher on utube
I concur, we would love to see the rest of this.
Thanks Carl!
U got me addicted to the guitar again... thanks man ur a great teacher
Great video and explanation but i cant play with rythm and i cant keep up to speed🥲 I play so stiff and it sounds terrible and i cant do the little pullof hammer on bit its so hard😫
please do more metallica lessons
The legato part confuses me, I never know much you're supposed to pick, but I do a hammer on 2 to 3 then the legato to make it easier on the riht hand.
Yes I do want to see more
Keep 'em coming!!! ;D
Thanks carl!!!!
You are the best! Thanks a lot!
Thank you mate. 😊
Well that was Awesome!! Time to work on that one :)
Carl, what gear were you using to get this sound ? Amp and pedals? Love your channel.....
Another great lesson - keep it up. What model guitar is that Music Man? Seems to be very versatile
I love your videos and I love your tone what do you do to get your tone
Freaken awesome dude!
Nice rock🤘🖤🔥
Do you have a nerve problem? I noticed the tape. Does it help? I'm having problems. The Dr.s are saying my neck. But the fire pins are in my arms and fingers. Just asking.
I love you carl please do some styx. Any song and that would be FANTASTIC
Dear Carl:
Could you please help us figure out exactly what they're doing on the riff that starts at 4:17? You play this four times in a row:
00(G) 00(G) 00222222
However, if you listen carefully to the CD, you can hear that they do something slightly different the second time. It's something like this:
00(G) 00(G) 00222223
I can't figure it out, however. Also, I suppose it could be an overdub.
Thank you for your consideration.
John Saxon I think they just accidentally played the open F sharp power chord
Hardwired To Self Destruct
I figured out what they did. They do a hamer-on/pull-off lick on the 6th string. The notes are: F#/G/F#E
What a legend 😎
Thanks
Plz make a pt. 2!!!
thankyou sir, respect
brilliant explanation ! tell me please which exact effect do you use ? thanks !
Sick dude
please do a lesson on no remorse
Carl can you do John Petrucci - Wishful thinking? Thanks
Amazing! Thanks, Carl! :-)
