This is an Alphonso Johnson song from 1977. I was lucky enough to have seen Bobby and the Midnites a few times 30 years ago. Bobby Cochran (Eddie Cochran's nephew) really jammed with this band. Rounded out with Billy Cobham on drums and Weir singing, this was truly a supergroup!
Yes. Weir doesn't do much on tracks like this. And I'm not a Bobby basher ever, he's just really not doing anything. Guess he's always wanted to be in a jazz band, I know ratdog explored some jazzy edges, as does Wolf Bros at times.
@AtomicBlog You get that distinct sound from having no frets, especially when you slide up or down (see the bass solo generally). BRRRRREEOOOOOOOWwWWWWW. Hard to explain. If you ever get a chance, sit down at a guitar center or something and try it out.
What an outstanding piece of an mostly underrated but surely one of the best bassist: Alphonse Johnson!
Amazing. Great solo, one of the best ever. Passion , feeling, warmth , big hearth, positive communication and coolness. Pure music

Really showcases the mastery of AJ.....
more like Alfonso & The Midnites . Love that fret-less bass sound . He was bad-ass with Weather Report .

Incredible....A.J. tears it up and you can definitely trace his bass tone here back to "Gibraltar. "...Lobue fretless... Thanks for posting...

anyone know where this was filmed, I saw 3 or 4 Bobby Midnites shows around then, The Palace in Hollywood?
yep
Wowza. what happened to these guys?
Does anyone play a fretless bass any more?
eight years on but you should look up Esperanza Spalding who plays a mean fretless and does so while singing.
