    i love how you both said "GRANDPA?" at the exact same time as everyone else XD it's been really fun watching this series again with you both! a couple things to clarify in this episode: it's not really clear in the live action, but in the manga kuina's death was actually just an unfortunate accident. she fell down the stairs and broke her neck. the fact that she died "like a normal person" and not in combat really upset zoro but reminded him that, unfortunately, even the strongest people are still human, and fundamentally fragile.
    zoro's sensei, shimotsuki koushiro, is also kuina's father, which is why he's so devastated by her death. kuina was his only child and the eventual heir to the dojo, but despite the fact that kuina was the strongest in the dojo and capable of even beating adult men with her swordsmanship, koushiro still expressed concern that she wouldn't be strong enough, saying that men would "naturally" surpass her as she got older.
    throughout their time together at the dojo, zoro and kuina fought 2001 times, and zoro never beat her a single time. with that perspective, it's no wonder zoro became absolutely obsessed with beating her! and that he got so upset when she expressed that she was on the verge of giving up, just because of her father's old-fashioned ideas about gender and strength. it's really such a tragic story, i always feel sad when i think about it :'(
    look forward to your next upload, and i hope you're having lots of fun watching this series! i know i am

    It was better explained in the show, but after her fight with Zoro, she went to the storage basement to get a sharpening stone to get the nicks out of the blade. Unfortunately, she fell down the stairs. And if you know anything about Japanese architecture, their ain't no death trap like the way they construct their stairs. I mean, in the US and most other countries, you CAN die to stairs, but severe and debilitating injuries are more common.

    Just to point out that a devil fruit gives you a very weirdly unique out of the world like abilities, just like a rubber man or chop chop man for now, so if someone is unbelievably fast or strong it is safe to say they get it through training.
    And the Sensei (Trainer) is actually her biological father, in the manga/anime he is very proud of her but because of patriarchy thing, it's impossible to let her lead the dojo in the future. Which is where Kuina get the idea of how woman cannot surpassed a man. After Kuina made a promise with Zoro, she get more motivation and trained harder but unfortunately she fallen down the stairs and died just like that, to remind us how frail, unfair and unpredictable life is no matter how strong you are or how big your dream is.

      also "falling down the stairs" is a old japanese way of saying she commited suicide.

      @@Leer19917 This is already proven false a long time ago, it's only circles around OP fans for years just because of one person theory with no original source at all. There's no such thing as falling down the stairs means suicide in Japanese culture, except for a victim covering an abuse they went through, feel free to look it up.

      Its not because of the patriarchy, its because of biology. They acknowledged that she was the strongest fighter, but they knew that as she ages she would be overtaken by men.

    • @yooramosa5242
      @yooramosa5242 10 месяцев назад

      @@-BlazeK- Yes, it's exactly why I said it. Since biology is one of the reasons that plays a big part in why patriarchy exists in the first place.

    I mean there _isn’t_ anything suspicious about Kuina’s death, she fell down the stairs and died, that’s all that happened, the tragedy of someone so young with such skill and potential dying in an accident is what makes it poignant

      Down D. Stairs

    • @Rabbithole8
      @Rabbithole8 11 месяцев назад

      People try to read things into it that don't make any sense in context of the manga or anime. It is just how you describe it. What makes it poignant is that she slipped on stairs that she went up and down hundreds of times, yet she fell and hit her head. Just one moment took everything away. It adds to the sense of urgency of living to the fullest. Zoro is extra driven and stoic because of this experience, as well as the burden of becoming the best swordsman also for Kuina.

      We the readers and watchers of the anime know this because we’ve had years to process the information. But, as a first time viewer they have no reason to believe that there isn’t anything suspicious when people have literal superpowers.
