  • Sorry for all the mic popping, these live videos have me constantly bustling around while I make wild strokes at my tablet. I don't even know what this is actually about. Are clothing folds too simplistic to make a video about? I recommend putting this on and taking a nap.

      Right? I learned more in the Andrew Loomis books I purchased for a grand total of what... 30 per book times four? Vs my 60k+ college education. So many more resources are available now that college's one advantage is someone guides you through what to learn first. And that you're a dedicated student, not part time. Still.... the costs. The way I see college now is it's go big or go home. Find a school that has VERY good job placement after graduation, or don't bother. The networking is more valuable than the degree.

    • @toonybrain
      @toonybrain 6 лет назад +9

      Agreed. I'm noticing in almost every endeavor, those who are motivated enough to learn on their own and pursue excellence, are far more successful than those who plod through the one-size-fits-all approach of higher education.
      Many find that they're a quick study and can't handle the slow pace of a 6-8 week college course. Those are the kids who always got lost in public schools - from boredom.
      The internet is changing everything. Higher education is a colossal waste of huge amounts of money unless you're training for something specific like mechanical engineer, lawyer (yuck), doctor. Higher education is soon to become passe and obsolete.

    I would have liked to see a little discourse on fabric type and weight and how it affects clothes. Very light fabric will have more folds and movement, like chiffon or silk. Middle weave fabrics like cotton will have a little more stiffness and natural structure. Heavy fabrics like denim and velvet will have deeper drapes but less folding overall and a stiffness to them. And knits will have chunky folds that are rounder. Fabric choices will have a very profound affect on what you draw. If you make your jeans too 'folded' and draped, it looks like they are wearing sweatpants instead. If the velvet skirt has too much movement and drape, it looks like velveteen. The weave and weight has a very crucial part in art. I actually really recommend going to a fabric store and pulling the bolts out. You can see the natural drape of the fabric off the bolt that way and get a good idea how weight looks in fabric.

      In the meantime, there's a really neat site you can use to practice figure drawing and timed drawing. There is an option for only clothed models, and the variety of clothing is extensive. There's an option to skip and pause the pictures too, so if you find a style of outfit or fabric or pose you really like, you can keep it there.

    Great advice. Doing clothed figure drawing is definitely a big help. It's nice to go back and forth between practicing from ref and then without ref. If you're mindful of something like the clothing folds, then drawing without ref will help you with the ref, and vice versa. Like a snowball of improvement.

    A suggestion... why not reduce the opacity of the figures? (I'm only to 13:41). People would still get what you're coming from and you'd be able to better see the lines you are laying down. May be better overall, as we can only see what you see, too. The narration nails the points, though, so the video was still quite helpful. Thank you for taking the time to help people.

    I'm not near as good a teacher as sinix is but i found for me with my linework is to have your feet planted securely on the floor. It is much easier to support yourself this way. Keep your body still and only really use your arm/shoulder to sketch and arm/wrist to render. Also, vary your line width with purpose; bold lines away from the light source, thin/implied lines near the light. Have confidence in your lines. Look at where you're going, not where you are, this will help create clean lines.
