Another great video Uncle Knackers. Never thought there as so many steps when you want to go an renovate your own home. But a lot of useful information for sure. At leas there now you are getting through all the steps, getting closer and closer to the remodeling phase. Can't wait for the next video to see the walk through of your home. Just from the videos you have submitted so far, have given me a lot of ideas. Much appreciated. :D
I am sure glad I do not live in Australia. I just rebuilt a cabin on the Tennessee River and needed no permits. Too much to go thru. Good luck. Great video.
denis daurer Thanks Denis. I think the reason is is that so many owner builders get into trouble, don't finish their projects and finish up going bust. It's a pain top go through it but hopefully there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Cheers mate.PS. Your cabin sounds great.
Thanks for this great video Shane. I'm doctor by trade and am interested in doing something more hands on in life with my soft supple hands. Your channel has helped me a lot!
Thanks Juian 👍 Go for it mate....it is very satisfying to see what you can build with your hands. Your hands will callous up in no time at all 😂 Have a great day mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Thanks Shane, do you think you could do a more detailed video on this process from design to construction certificate with all the lessons you've now learnt? just starting this process myself.
Stephen Harding Yes mate…the god old Queensland White. That was what was on offer with the Owner Builder Course that l did. It's recognised Australia wide so that ticked all the boxes for me. Cheers mate.
Hey Shane, have just started our own owner builder project. Being a seasoned carpenter myself it has been quite a challenge with a lot of organising and planning. Love the videos mate and agree with the feeling of “white noise” haha
Although a completely different set of rules and regs required than for a job here in the UK, one thing is exactly the same - the council sponsored red tape! :-) Nicely done getting all the boxes ticked, can't wait to see what's going on next! :-)
TAFE (At least in SA) has been dumbed down to "Technical/Training and Further Education" - no longer regarded as "tertiary". To overseas viewers, TAFE is Australia's Community College. Cheers again Knackers, looking forward to future updates. Edit: What counts as a "renovation", as in, what work undertaken requires all of this Owner/Builder process - I'm going to guess that varies state by state or council by council? Or is it an Australian standard?
TheApothecaryAus Any job over 10 grand (in Australia) takes you into the class of an Owner Builder. It's a real shame that they closed down a lot of the TAFE Instituions. I think there's a real need for them. Cheers mate.
Hey Shane, Good video. It was no surprise to see all of the bureaucratic hoops you have had to jump through. I can understand the reasoning behind all of the steps necessary BUT! I think the exorbitant fee abuse is a bit of thievery, much like here in the US, A real revenue generator. Sounds like you have your ducks in row and ready to go. Don’t forget your hardhat! Cheers!
Dave Ellingsen Hi Dave, like you, l can see the reasoning behind the courses. Back in the past Owner Builders were notorious for not finishing jobs and going bankrupt so a little preparation is always a good idea. Hard hats are on the ready. Cheers mate :-)
awww, no "great tips knckkeerrrrrsza?!" you let me down shane...you let me down...hahaahaha really great tip mate, this will help alot of us...easy quick guide! well done
When I win the powerball lottery you can reno my house in Australia (which I have yet to buy, on the coast of course!) and then fill it with pallet projects. Deal? It's out there so it's written in stone now lol, cheers my friend!
G'day Billy. Having done it a number of times before l had a fairly good idea of what my project was going to cost. If this is your first attempt, l have a link here that might set you in the right direction. Good luck 👍 www.ownerbuild.com.au/cost-estimating
We dont have to go to this level in NewZealand, except getting council/engineering sign off for certain work, especially structural. I would guess though that we arnt far behind following Aussie down the path of courses and special insurances.
Doug Mottern Thanks Doug. I don't really see much of a problem with the courses etc. They do prepare you for whats to happen down the track. Cheers mate :-)
Shane I haven't yet done any projects that have triggered the OB threshold, but they're getting closer each time. There's a possibility I'll OB an extension in a year or so, and will need to complete the course before then. Until that time, if it's not technically required, do you feel there is any value in completing the course for somebody at competent DIY level, where the projects generally don't involve any external trades? Think decking/pergolas/tiling/etc etc type scale. I'm not sure how much of this is a "tick-a-box" exercise, and how much could be of real practical value.
Pete, where l found the course valuable was on the legality side of things as well as insurance requirements. The course really doesn't go into the act of 'how to build a house' It's more about coordinating the job effectively so that you don't get into trouble and you don't go broke. Cheers
Thanks Shane, much appreciate that. At this stage I've decided to hold off on the course and think it's better to concentrate on the skills required that would otherwise be done by the various trades. Once I start bringing in others more regularly and/or it becomes a legal requirement to go down the OB course I'll jump through the hoops. Love your work mate, great stuff!
Make sure you jump through all those hoops mate, great 2nd part. Does your planning permission go into your local Newspaper or a sign put on the nearest lamp post for locals to read?. Here they do that before works are carried out incase any Joe-Public wants to oppose such works.
Kani Fuker The Council here sends letters to all the parties that are close to the project stating what is proposed. If they have any concerns then they have the opportunity to object. Thankfully we got the all clear :-) Cheers mate
What I have a private certifier ? I already put my builders name on the paper work for the council , private certifier mentioned if I do my owner builder course he will amend it for me and add my name
Filmgeek913 Thanks Filmgeek. Just so you know, the Owner Builder Course and White Card (you do them in combination) was $244.00. The Owner Builder Permit was $160.00 and Council fees vary between different Councils. This also changes depending on the cost of the job and the type of the work proposed. Hope that helps. Cheers

Dang I'm glad it's not that tough here. 50 dollar permit and your ready to go here. The more the reno costs the more the permit is? WOW! I feel your pain. Tax and spend government is so efficient. LOL!

They were excellent lol :) Do o still need to get home and warranty insurances ? I googled it it says it’s no longer required ? I know this video a few years old lol
what is this council you keep talking about? Here in Covington, Washington , USA we have a Community Development Department that is local to the city. They take care of all the permits and other detail for building inside the city limits. We have city, county, state and federal levels of Government. Is the council local to your city?
mike smith In Australia its Federal, State and Councils that form our governments, Councils look after a region usual set by the population of the community and regulates all building constructions.
Every business interest of the building industry is represented at state government level. The owner builder is not represented. The costs and regulations for an owner builder is all about discouraging owner builders.
I just completed the Owner Builder's Course with Absolute Education and was let down at the end when it stated that the last module can't be done online like we were led to believe the course was supposed to be in its entirety. There is an audio/visual component that you must complete with a series of ridiculous tasks. You have to either attend their office in person, do a facetime video with a trainer or record yourself and send it to them. ARRGGHH !! This is the last bit I have to do to get my certificate. I did the whole module set in one sitting and just ploughed through, despite 90% of the course having nothing to do with my project, which is a shed build. Go figure.. Took around 4 hrs. I'm so sick of Bureaucracy and red tape !
Thanks for sharing! This video is perfect for owner builders. I’ve been doing owner Building for 10 years it is definitely the way to go!
