The display, buttons, battery life and volume control are a massive improvement over the BTR7. Sounds better too, nice job Fiio and great review as always!
And then they released m21 with more balanced power output, ldac receive mode for cheaper.
@@gokuljosh1186 do you mean the JM21?
I got one on launch and it's honestly superb.
Coming from a BTR5 it's a big bump in performance. PEQ is also a gem (Eliminated the need for DSP cable & Moondrop app with my Dusk iems by saving Crinacle's presets direct).
The biggest surprise though was actually Bluetooth: the gap in quality between LDAC and wired is barely noticeable. People are going to be pleasantly surprised.
Does it have multipoint connectivity in Bluetooth? It’s one of the nicest things about the Q5k.
@@guybrushtwood Yes it does
Can you elaborate on the improvement in sounds vs btr5? Thanks.
@@zyrexd7398no, he can't
Good to have you back, Dave. I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time!
Thanks for the review of the BTR17, which along with your review of other gear helped me make the decision on what I believe is the best gear for my needs, wallet and knowledge. I am new to this world of high-resolution music and find the BTR17 to be a budget-friendly option. This will be my first DAC. I already bought it on Amazon.
BTR17 is phenomenal with its PEQ function. I play around with it alot.
That puppy is super cute, thanks for the the amazing review as always
Awesome video also the quality of your video looks amazing!
I gave my FiiO K7 BT desktop dac/amp to my nephew and now hook the BTR17 to my Samsung 7 FE tablet, using a 3ft ANKER OTG cable and an Anker OTG type c to female usb adapter cable. I have concert hall and dolby atmos on my tablet but turn the concert hall off. I also have UHQ upscaler on the tablet. Something you might want to look up. With this setup, the BTR17 sounds great.
I think the FiiO might come with a 5 inch long type c to type c cable, that "might" work in place of the OTG cable and adapter.
You didn’t mention one of its biggest selling points, the eq & peq function for people who like to eq.
Having the BTR17 for over a month now, its a great tool for me to eq my headphones and iems, since there’s no solid apps/software options to eq in mac/ios.
The only thing I hate about the BTR17 is that it doesn't have independent volume control. I want to be able to control the volume from my macbook, which I can't.
Is this your first experience with the BTR, and are you satisfied with its battery and what you use it with
@@MML66 I also have the BTR15 for portable use when I go outside. This BTR17 I use for desktop use, because I want the eq function. I plug it on my Macbook, so I can't comment much about the battery since I use it on Desktop-mode (that doesn't require the use of battery).
@NelsonMichael Thank you
The multifunctional volume wheel alone is a massive upgrade and more than enough to change the whole experience.
The custom PEq is a great addition. I hope other manufacturers incorporate this feature in their dongles and bt devices too.
It's my first DAC and I'm okay with using it for years. I might upgrade IEMs, but I don't think I'll find better value for money in a pocket sized DAC any time soon. I haven't even tried desktop mode yet.
To be honest, though, at this form factor and with that button layout I would've loved to have built in memory to use it as a DAP/mp3 player for walks without a phone. Just 8 or 16 gb or a micro SD card slot and the software needed, that's all.
Is it better than the iFi hip-dac 3 in terms of specifications such as battery and power? What is the best option in your opinion, given that they are at the same price?
Use the braided short type c to type c cable with the BTR17 to hook it to a tablet and then you get 192 PCM, The anker cables only allow 48. Thanks😀
I've owned the BTR5, BTR15, BTR7 and now the BTR17. I would say in terms of sound, the 15 was a nice jump from the 5, but the 7 was too similar to the 15, so I got rid of the 5 and 7. With the 15 and 17, I feel like it's a night and day difference in terms of sound, all of my cans simply sound WAY better on the 17 than on the 15. I will be keeping the 15 because of it's portability and it still does sound good on my IEM's, but my new daily is the 17.
Can you share more on the sound quality differences between the BTR15 and BTR17 and for IEMs specifically? Thanks.
@@rdavidsen7344 Absolutely. In terms of volume they are similar. Using my Kiwi Ears Quintets as an example...with the 15 they sound great but with the 17 the bass is a little bit tighter and the soundstage is noticeably wider. On the 15 the upper mids can get a little grainy at high volumes and the on the 17 I didn't have that problem. At moderate volumes they both sound great but the 17 delivers better bass. Also, since I just went back and forth listening before replying, LDAC is way more stable on the 17 than the 15, the 15 had at a couple of stutters while listening. I've noticed this before on the 15 and the 5 but it never really bothered me too much. I connect to a Pixel 8 Pro for reference. Both are great and I would say for IEM's the 15 is still a good choice but the 17 is better.
@@jayzworld31 Thanks! I have the BTR15, so your experience is really helpful and important as I consider upgrading to the BTR17. My usage case is primarily via Bluetooth since I have the iBasso DC-Elite for 'desktop' use. Also helps that I have the Pixel 8 Pro as well. 😊
Any other points to share? For example, thoughts about usage due to weight/size/design differences between the 15 and 17, etc.?
@@rdavidsen7344 The 15 is definitely more pocketable and the battery life on the 15 has never been an issue on the 15. I do like the volume wheel better on the 17. Other than that, they are both easy to carry and fairly light...the 15 is lighter but it's not like the 17 is heavy by any means. I like and will continue to use my 15, but I like the 17 more.
@@jayzworld31 Good to hear these points. Thank you very much jayz.
Great production.
How does he fair with the Qudelix K4 though? I am really am curious about the tuning options on Qudelix , which are insanely broad, but everyone talks very well about the BTR17 as well.
This category of DAC is very confusing for me. I want the very small size, such as the BTR13 or BTR15, for you at the same time. You want the large battery and more power, for me, the BTR17. Also, the price difference between them, I feel that comparing them will be useful.
I need to see what IEM’s you have. Do you have links? I’m a bass player who puts most his $$ into gear except my IEM’s are KZ AS16 pro x. Which actually work very well IMO in the point. Looking into getting this BTR17 for first portable DAC.
How is the BTR17 compared to the M15i? Since they are in the same price range and the M15i was praised so much here?
Just talking about sound, NOT about features or operating system, just sound, which one sounds better, the fiio btr17 or the hiby r4?
HNY 🥳
Nice unit …I’ll stick with my IFI Go Blue…but this looks damn nice 👍
Thanks for the review!
Like always is excellent 👌🏼
I would like to know the information about the sampling rate and the bit rate of the analog outputs (3.5 and 4.4 mm)?
Can you help me?
Thanks a lots!
I'm saving for this right now, my only concern is if ibasso dc07 pro with 4 cs43131 edges it out in terms of resolution. While both are in the same price range, and both having a glorious volume knob, fiio btr17 has the convenience of Bluetooth, peq, and power. I settled with fiio, but a direct comparison would maybe cure my fomo of not choosing ibasso dc07 pro. Ty
Need a review of the Questyle M18i to see where they stand against each other aside from price.
Thanks for video. Is it big differents between btr5?
Any comparison in terms of sound quality over Cayin RU-7?
Fiio ka15 or btr 17 which one sounds good
I'm looking for something like this that also transmits hi res codecs apt x HD, apt x adaptive and LDAC In a similar pocketable size for no more than 300 or so, does such a product exist?
Compare to dc07 pro, which is better in sound?
How does it compare with fiio m21 ?
In spec, it has more power, more features, bluetooth receiver mode with ldac, while being cheaper. Only area where it lacks is in latency and little inferior dac chip, i don't understand how cs43131 chip managed to have more power output on m21.
Due to this not having a spring loaded clip and being on the larger side , what else would you recommend for using in the gym ? I just ordered a set of Fatfreq HBB iems and I need to upgrade my bleetooth amp as well . Would tu e BTR 15 be a good enough option for power and bass or are there any other better options ? I don’t know if FiiO will make a clip case for this . Thanks
Wireless iems with noise canceling. I simply use the moondrop space travel, since I recently lost the AirPods. The environment noise doesn’t justify at all messing with a wire
Qudelix 5k is the king . Weighs nothing , clips on, has amazing eq settings
I don’t really want Bluetooth earbuds as they don’t sound as good as wired and they don’t get as loud either . I really don’t care about noise cancellation or any other features. I just received my Fatfreq HBBs and they sound great with my old FiiO BTR 3 however I still need a more powerful amp for even better performance. I’ve seen comparison videos between BTR15 and qudelix 5k. BTR 15 seams to be a better option going by the reviews
@@MrPotter-xf7uo I have the qudelix had it for 2 years and it’s absolutely amazing I use it with s12 iems at the gym . Can also be connected to a PC in DAC mode which means it doesn’t use the battery. Also 1000s of eq settings
Who in their right mind would use a wired headphone to work out???? Lmfao - stupidest comment for 2025.
❤
So dave please tell me why you do not have the BTR 7 any more ? Seems strange considering that you loved it so much. Did it broke same as mine did ? And if so why dont you tell people about ? Do you get silent money from Fiio ?
Is it worth to buy it if i use ifi go blu?
Are there any other products like this but a bit smaller/lighter? I like to hang these receivers to the headband of my headphones.
Besides the power output, is there any advantage of getting these instead of btr13?
How does it compare to HiBy m300?
It works with IOS? Iphone 16 ?
What is that square unit on the top left? 0:10. It has the number 5 on it.
Hiby FD5
I want one 😊
I do like the dongle but the static and the display screen staying black and then having to turn it off and on to have the display show is quite annoying. And the random disconnect where if I'm listening to tidal and then a video on IG, and sometimes it'll just make it silent, so then I have to disconnect my iem and turn off the dongle is also an issue with mine. Been doing that for the first few days and it's been a week since I haven't had those issues so far. But it's getting close to where I'm about to just return it and not look back if it continues to do some of those annoying things again
I'm buying one, so that I can use BT to listen to my TV, which has no 3.5mm output.
David, thank you for another wonderful review! 👌

How is the sound compare to ka17 and m18i?
I have the btr7 (not the btr17) and m18i .. m18i is a big step up interms of sound quality, guitar distortion and synthesizers were really crunchy on m18i .. battery life sucks though, if you want portability I would stay away with m18i, but if you want the purest sound .. m18i all the way
How long would you say the battery last?
@ i couldnt tell, i havent drained it, but faster than btr7 would
Is it better than ibasso dco7 pro?
BTR is several times larger than the dco7 pro, so there is probably a difference in battery size and power.
@Darknight-d9o dco7 pro doesn't have an inbuilt battery I think.but it delivers around 700 mw output
@@ratheesh4865 I didn't know he was this big and strong. I will look for him more
Does it work through usb connection but using internal battery?
I run a qudelix which is pretty competent but using as a dac to my phone, can i adjust on the app while it's in dac mode or is it just while using Bluetooth.
would you consider this upgrade from Onix alpha ?
Sound wise, almost the same. The Onix might have a bit more resolution. If you don't need bluetooth/eq, get the Onix
@NelsonMichael Thanks mate
Thanks for the review! :) Do you still have Cadenza 12 on hand? I´m not quite sold on that combination and it feels like that it´s not a good synergy.....something is off and i constantly need to lower the volume...it somehow looses its effortlessnes and sounds strained. In case you still have C12, is the M18i a better match?
How does it work with Dunu's Davinci?
@@Desolate0716 I too want to know that.l planned to buy dco7pro for my davincy now I am confused
The btr17 is a ka17 with Bluetooth and a battery
i love fiio,i love my q15 for example, but i hate on it the plastic jack plugs, its just looks cheap, but sound great! This btr7 have same material plugs and ugly as Ffff!ugly case too!And look at the fitting at 2:53 ,what its that? The glue under the rubber back?
*btr17
Anodized not iodized.
🤣 I was gonna say: iodized??? So it's good to eat after it stops working, without fear of getting iodine deficiency? 😋
Good review.
I liked the comparison w the Onix Alpha.
( I own and love the Alpha) [warts and all]
In terms of value... While twice the price of the Alpha... you gain a separate USB port for power, BT, and a battery.
How much are those things worth?
What we've learned w the Alpha is that you want to use an external power supply (battery in most cases) (This means using a split USB cable w the power coming from a secondary source.)
Having a battery also relieves this problem and doesn't suck down the power of your cell phone.
BT also removes a lot of the stress on the USB-C socket where over time it can loosen up... if you get both the sound and the power over this... it can force your phone to reboot w a momentary loss of power.
If I were to ask for upgraded features... I'd think about all of the things you listed w the BTR17. And since its only 2x the Alpha's price... maybe its a better value proposition?
Honestly.. looking at the Alpha, BTR7, DC Elite, and now the BTR17 ... you really can't go wrong with any of them... just recognize their issues.
Man's sitting on ibasso dx340 about to demolish all these other dacs. Great video as always!
The DX340 is a full-blown audio player so it's not at all comparable.
Fiio (same with HiBY) are brands i will not buy any more since i experienced their ugly behaiviour in case of return/repair issues. I had to ship my failed BTR 7 (after 5 Month the output stage was broken) on my own expense to china for repair. After they successfully repaired it they told me that i also had to pay the delivery (backwards after repair) without providing any agreement how to handle eventual future issues. So that is more than 100 bucks for a repair after 6 Month of use without any futher service. Simply unacceptable and from now on a no go brand for me
It's pretty much the case for any chinese tech things. You're almost always better off buying through a local reseller and have them deal with the warranty and repair on your behalf. Fiio and Hiby aren't really unique in this.
Fiio software is trash, qudelix software is fantastic and it's peq simplicity is unmatched, how does a company as massive as fiio have such trash software, no easy way of searching peq's
Seems their priority lately has been taking over every portable source niche from inline "cable sized" DACs to near-desktop and DAP size, along with the full-desktop section where they already had a solid enough position. And they've been pretty successful, there seems to be no category of portable, wired or Bluetooth, where you don't end up comparing whatever other options exist to at least one FiiO.
