  • It's been a weird year with drought and bugs and so much more in the garden. I want to take a minute and share all the " garden fails" I see around me. Thanks for listening!
Welcome to our Plan Bee! After 20 years of successful careers in the Los Angeles area we moved to rural Missouri and are taking steps to become more self-sustaining on our homestead. I break down all the farmy things into small manageable steps so you can start homesteading wherever you are.
We homestead on 2.5 acres in the Missouri Ozarks, and our garden hardiness zone is 6B.
Our weekly videos break down farming and gardening into small manageable steps so you can make the transition towards self sufficiency and food sustainability without being overwhelmed!
I garden in the Missouri Ozarks and am in hardiness zone 6B.

It amazes me how these bugs seem to come from no where to attack a specific plant.

This year has been the worst garden year I can remember.

This year has been one sucker punch after another. First there was grazon and plastic contamination. Then there were squash bugs and vine bores. I was able to get a grip on the horn worms so tomatoes look great. The entire fall crop of greens were destroyed in one night. I need a better plan for next year.

Deer ate out sweet potatoes, but they might be some because there's vines now. We lost the battle of the weeds. We do have a few green tomatoes, a few peppers. Mostly nothing this year. We both work for da man and lack energy and drive. Burn your plot after the frost kills off the plants and you might get rid of some bugs. Another idea is to skip a year and leave the chickens in the plot.

Yes!! I’m up near Bolivar, and I just gave up on my garden in August. The drought, the lack of production, and the pests were too much. I did have a few cantaloupes that were doing well, but something got into them. I was able to get some sweet corn, okra, and a few peppers before I gave up. I’m definitely motivated to try things differently next year.

I’m getting tomatoes and peppers now, and harvested some carrots today, so not all is lost…
      Yet. 😬

Glad to hear this!! I was looking forward to harvesting a few pears from my tree, but I think the raccoons got them. Lol!!

So sad! - really tough year for a lot of reasons. My biggest problem was allium leaf miner - destroyed my entire onion bed. Still thankful for everything else but it's a bitter blow. Take care x

I lost all my courgette french dwarf beans & butternut squash to slug/ snails and they had a good go at other stuff too. So youre not alone with damage to vegetables. I need to go on a duck raid. .

Huge big tomato plants, hundreds of flowers but only two or three small ugly tomatoes this year, never had this happen before.... I’m going to take them out, I don’t think there is time for them to make and ripen... north east Texas here

I filmed this a few weeks ago, and I harvested a bunch of romas and cherry tomatoes yesterday. So don’t give up hope just yet!

So sad for you. I can't believe bugs or animals can ruin a garden so fast and it's so heartbreaking. I've had some fails but all in all I've been OK. I have no green beans though because they were destroyed by Japanese beetles. I'll save the beans that did hang on for seed for the next years crop. The beetles also spread to my beautiful strawberries but I did put Sevin on them and that took care of it. I like to stay as chemical free as possible but I was not going to let them ruin my berries. I had only 3 carrots come up. I have the best tomato crop I've ever had. My onions and potatoes did well but to produce enough to last a year I'll have to plant so much more.

Maybe get a motion sensor camera. I have a camoflauge camera you tie to trees to film wildlife. You can see what is attacking your garden. Cayenne pepper in dishwashing detergent sprayed onto veg will get rid of bugs.

You might have ground hogs or raccoons
