I’m not in a photo rut but it’s videos like this that keep me inspired. I haven’t used a film camera in years. It’s time to dust off my old Olympus OM 1. Great photos thanks.
Martin, your shots are brilliant-Brilliant. Beautifully executed and the subject matter exudes evocative serenity. No matter what camera you use, you’re able to coax wonderful images out of each. Thank you for the video.
Whenever I have a block, I make drawings, or concentrate on writing , that usually helps. I was also told by someone if you walk two hours to anywhere, you will eventually see something. These are wonderful photographs. Thanks!
The difficulty with many film lenses is that you can't get close enough to photograph images like with your photos. There are macro filters but they reduce your focus range to a really slim area. There are extension tubes but they also reduce your focus range to a slim area. There are dedicated macro lenses, but all of them are 1 to 2 stops slower than standard lenses. There's bellows systems but they are relegate for the most part to large format cameras that require shooting with costly film and having to lug a hug camera around. There are two options that remove all of these issues for close focus but I will keep them a secret.
Thanks Martin. This was the perfect video to jump start my creative processes. Ijust love the way you explain things in such a relaxed style. I shoot 4x5 in Ohio it is hard to get motivated here after living in New Mexico for years. Thanks again and please keep them coming.
This was very helpful with a topic I at least am familiar with. Getting in closer or playing with cropping when composing can create an entirely different image. Thanks for really inspiring videos!
I so appreciated this video. I've had health issues that have left me dormant and uninspired. I watched this video and i feel some of it coming back. I love that you present various cameras & films too. I shoot mostly 35mm but some medium format. I really need to shoot more of it and this might be the kick in the pants I need. Thank you. Thank you!
Martin - You are brilliant and your photography is excellent! Thank you for taking the time to go out and make such interesting videos. My history is in newspapers (local to you hahaha) and I absolutely know that the advice you give on this video should be at the very heart of anyone who is a photographer and wants to take arresting and interesting images. Well done your work is appreciated!
Fantastic video Martin, I loved the photos and suggestions to try different formats as well as different styles. Hope all is well and look forward to the next video.
I was not aware that the pinhole has infinite depth of field. I just found a use for a cheap Chinese M42-PK adapter I bought. Thanks for the creative views.
A much needed video! The lockdown has a lot to answer for. I retired the week before all the lockdowns started and all those planned trips and holidays went to the wall. I also found that I had to do my photography alone: My impatient partner was a real drag, I really needed to spend the time even with my 'main' EOS6D Mk ii camera. My more quirky film cameras takes me much longer. Funnily enough, I was looking at some old photos of the town I live in, and was struck by how simple things like the clothes people wore, the cars, shops that have now gone. Those photos have preserved that history. I looked at my own high street now and saw people wearing masks, the Covid signs in the shops and the rest. Things that looked alien 2 years ago look normal now. How would your kids see those photos in 20 years time?
Thanks for the video, Martin. I thought I was watching myself on TV at first. Love the camera collection and you have a great portfolio with some truly inspiring images. You obviously have a lot of technical ability as well as creativity. Thanks again 👍
Maybe my favourite of all your videos. The unconventional opening (i.e., not a head shot of a stationary vlogger) really grabbed my attention and also gave me some good insights into how you designed your working space. The topic is not discussed that often and yet everyone will hit a block eventually. Last, but not least, some wonderful images. Kudos.
the weir pic is great. very thoughtfully composed balance of the tonal values, my fav together with the bridge picture. overall your pictures are way above what i consider standards now adays
Absolutely love your videos. You definitely inspire me to go out n take pictures. They don't look anywhere near as good as yours. But.... I'm trying. One day I'll hopefully have one that I'm happy to put up on my wall. Thankyou.
Great inspirational video. I have had most of these feeling lately and not been out taking shots. After watching this today I went out for a wander round a familiar spot and took some shots in a completely different way. They are probably the best I have taken in that area so I thank you for reviving my mojo a bit :)
What a wonderful collection of images Martin!! It would be hard to pick a favourite and I know I will want to look at them again. The one of the waterfall looks as if there are trees in the background with the water falling from nowhere. It really made me look twice. The one of the close up of the bird is very unusual. I love all the different tones and the texture. The motorway bridge is beautifully composed, which must have been difficult with pinhole. I also like the way the rivets make a focal point in the view under the bridge. I love all the portraits too, especially the one of the little girl looking up. I could go on and on, but thankyou very much for sharing these Martin, and for the inspiration.
Hi Martin, great video, enjoyed your acting skills at the beginning 👌I had to laugh its what I have done more than once in my life of photography, glad to see you Back, inspiring us all regards Mick 📸
When I lack motivation I normally buy another camera and then I'm motivated again :-) . Eleven cameras in the last 18 months from a £28 FED 5 to a slightly more expensive Mamiya 645 Pro TL. Bit bored this week - think I NEED a Texas Leica! Also just ordered all the gear for home developing, I used to do it back in the 70s but this time I'll go hybrid with film scanning and Lightroom etc.
Yes there will be reciprocity failure for colour and slide film , Kodak Portra as an example 10 exposure reading will require around 20 sec to get a correct exposure

hi , Martin I was wondering if there is reciprocity for 35mm colour film ... keep up the good work enjoy your channel and knowledge
Yes there will be reciprocity failure for colour and slide film , Kodak Portra as an example 10 exposure reading will require around 20 sec to get a correct exposure
At 71 I'm wondering if I'll have enough time to do what I want.
