Psychologically speaking, Kaido and Big Mom rely immensely on their devil fruits for their reputation. Yes, they would be insanely powerful anyway, but just mentioning she can eat your soul and he's a dragon is huge part of why they cause so much fear

I don't think their reputation had anything to do with their fruit. No one was saying Kaido was a a dragon. They feared him because he was unkillable and was the king of the beasts. Big mom also wasn't known for that, she was just known for her hunger and how you need to go to her tea parties.
Before, they were simply called "Great Pirate". We have seen this during Oden's flashback. Kaido actually not only used normal observation haki multiple times, he also used future sight against Luffy.

As a person without a devil fruit and avid swimmer of water I can confirm newbie swimmers often lose an arm or even both. I praise Oda in this depiction of on the hazards of swimming.
Is it just me, or do Big Mom and Kaido especially feel... 'hollow' without their Devil-Fruit? Like, a huge part of how they fight and generally the way they handle things is directly due to that. It just feels wrong for them not to have it? But at the same time, without Devil-Fruits, they legitimately might actually reach the level Roger and Prime Whitebeard have considering they only have Haki to focus on. They really only have that way to increase in power, after all.
Totland will automatically not be able to function the same way because Big Mom's Devil Fruit powers are integral to the way that she controls the country.
Big Mom gets her fruit by eating Mother Caramel. That's a key part of her story. If she didn't do it, she could have ended up as a world government agent.
I do admit that without their devil fruits their threat level will drop significantly since they won't be able wield such destructive powers. They still have indestructable bodies. Keep in mind big mom still had that iron balloon body and kaido literally jumped 10,000 feet without using his devil fruit and still survived. I don't think they honestly could have improved their haki bc they seemed to have mastered it. All of them have had decades to improve their fighting styles. They all used the three types of haki (minus Blackbeard) at least at one point. Plus it seems like they all could use the advanced application of each too. Physically I think the yonko are each at their zenith. They aren't getting any stronger than what they are now if anything time and age would eventually make them weaker like the dying whitebeard. Their devil fruits just make things easier. Without em they would just take longer to destroy things.
I think a worthy note is that he kinda did one-shot luffy at the beginning of the wana arc in his regular form, obviously luffy is much stronger now but luffy at the time was still technically considered strong enough to be considered an emperor himself.

I don't think there was anything in the manga that said Kaido would have died if not for the fruit at God Valley. Big Mom merely states that on the day that Rocks crew fell in God Valley, she gave him the fruit which puts him in a life long debt to her.
BigMom, Kaido and Whitebeard would have definitely still be at the strength of Yonko even if they didn't have their DFs. However they would have probably all gone down the same path of Shanks in the Haki spectrum, which would be quite boring for us the audience to see them fight. Oda is most likely intending for Shanks to have the strongest Haki currently, so if the rest didn't have their DFs the variety in combat would have been like "we already seen this to the audience". Now Blackbeard himself will most likely never have become a Yonko without the DF, he even stated himself that if he didn't find the Yami Yami no Mi he will have to give up his dream. It was basically important checkbox for him
I think the concept of the Yonkou is overly simplified to simple combat ability. Of course it helps if you can solo an army, but what it usually means is that you have the requisite power (not just individual combat ability) to be considered a threat to any other ruling power. I think it helps to think of the Yonkou as nation states... A weak person commanding that power would still be considered a monumental threat. So I think with or without their devil fruits, the power the Yonkou wield would still hold
Yeah, Yonkou is a sort of Quasi-Political position, that is mainly achieved through power initially but sustained through influence and diplomatics. As no matter how powerful Kaido or Big Mom is individually, they can only be at one place at one time, which would leave any territory they have claimed prior defenseless. It's not to dissimilar from how Bounties in One Piece, while mainly acquired by fearsome and powerful pirates through power and conflict, are still just a portrayal of how big of a threat someone is to the World Government (Like Nico Robin getting a 80 million berri bounty when she was just an eight year old kid with little to no fighting ability). Of course, one needs some form of power to maintain both of these, but combat ability isn't the only form of power in the series. I mean, if someone had built Pluton for example, then even if the person in question is weak by themselves and has no combat ability, that is still an ancient weapon right there. It would be the equivalent of someone in our world owning a High Yield Nuclear Missle, you might be able to knock em' out in hand to hand, but if they fire that missle, then anything within that blast and fallout radius is pretty much doomed. (Dr. Vegapunk would be a good example of this, he doesn't sound like much of a fighter, he is arguebly one of the most influencial people in the entire world due to his technological prowess) Shanks is more of an outlier and is probably a Yonkou through his connections to the Gorosei and how he seems to know a lot about the world which people aren't supposed to know, making him a theoretical massive threath to the government if he made his knowledge of the world public.

I think Blackbeard didn't wanted to waste his time asking Thatch for the Yami Yami no Mi since he would likely say no which is why he probably killed him and didn't risk starting a fight with him giving out attention before he stole the fruit.

Quick take; if the Yonko (aside from Shanks) didn’t have devil fruit powers, they’d be even more impressive because they’d still be crazy powerful and threatening without them (just like Shanks is).
The flashback of the fight with whitebeard and roger shows what appeared to be a fight that didnt involve a devil fruit at all from whitebeard or roger, after all whitebeard was able to clash with roger with nothing but the haki on his weapon and roger with his, whitebeard is a pirate king candidate with or without a devil fruit, he simply didnt have a motivation to pursue the one piece treasure cause he didnt believe in it.
I have to agree with you there Tekking. That one time Whitebeard hit Akainu with a quake fist to the face, especially in the anime, looked like it was a finisher. This man Shirohige shattered Sakazuki and this man walked away with a lot less damage than I thought he should have sustained. Maybe Akainu protected himself with armament haki, but still
@@theenjeneer2792 Well maybe Akainu is alot stronger than we give him credit for, also, WB wasnt anywhere near full health, he had been stabbed multiple times, and his insides were charred by a magma attack, and half his face destroyed from a magma attack at the time he attacked Akainu, so it is very possible WB was highly weakened, like Vegeta after he was hit with the spirit bomb then came back, and couldnt figure out why his finishing move didnt destroy gohan goku and krillen, the fact he could do that to Akainu anyway in that shape, being way less than 100% from the start of the fight is more than a feat on it's own

Hell, it could be the joke again that she burns all those calories trying to swim after the Sunny and I could easily see Oda doing that as the joke and reason why she could catch up. Hell, as someone else down below in the comments points out, Rayleigh is an amazing swimmer and he's still a "normal" human without a Devil Fruit power, just physical strength even at his age.

Black beard is the most interesting because even without a DF he was still strong enough to nearly kill Ace in one hit, lifted Whitebeard off of his feet with an uppercut, throw massive boulders off of himself, scar Shanks while also receiving no noticeable wounds, and kill Thatch. Granted it seems like he stabbed Thatch in the back but that would require him to sneak up on a commander of Whitebeard's crew and attack him without being noticed through haki. He likely had other plans such as; "When Whitebeard dies I'll finally reveal myself as a new Emperor by killing the rest of the crew", "I'll just find another DF", or even "Wait until Whitebeard dies so I can eat the Gura Gura no mi". He likely had other plans and ways of becoming an Emperor, it just would've taken longer.
He did all of that with a devil fruit except for scarring Shanks(admittedly impressive) and killing Thatch which as you already said was probably a back stab and not actually a fight. He killed white beard by ganging up on him with his entire crew after Newgate had half his head blown off by akainu, a hole in his chest, and a absurd amount of wounds that got tallied up when he finally did die. Black beard is FAR from weak but compared to big mom or kaido he's not that impressive. His most impressive feat is how well his schemes pay off like they pay off really well hence why he's currently one of the strongest pirates alive and a yonko currently
Yeah but it was Whitebeards fruit that made him a Yonkou. Blackbeard being an anomaly with 2 fruits is why he's up there now, without them he wouldn't be nowhere near as powerful as the other Yonkou.
Do we know how long ago Captain John died? Maybe he was the fourth Yonko and then Shanks killed him. It'd explain why Shanks had John's treasure map in his possession.
Ok. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Thriller Bark. Even if Shanks didn’t kill him, he may have still been a Yonko and died around the time Shanks rose to power. I thought Shanks having the map (which… I guess was a lie, haven’t watched Marineford in a while either) might’ve given more credence to the idea, but the theory isn’t reliant on it. John’s notoriety, and particularly his immense treasure, do indicate to me that he’s among the more likely candidates for former Yonko. None of the other former Rocks Pirates seem to have much of a claim to fame, aside from the ones who became Yonko, and Shiki, who doesn’t seem to have.
Big Mom would still have control over Totto Land without her Devil Fruit, her crew was able to take down kingdoms by themselves and she still have those Sea Snails
I think Kidos crew is mostly because he is strong Shanks and whitbeards crew would stand by them even if they get bedridden and weak Kidos grew would not Big moms would there family so he would be worst off. Luffy's crew would stand by him if he lost his fruit and could not fight

However them not having fruits may have even affected their place on Rock's crew at the time, it might not but who knows why those three specifically were actually picked up by Rocks, but hey that's just a theory, an ANIME THEORY!
Nothing in the manga says that Kaido was near death in God valley. Big mom herself only states that she gave him the fruit on the day that Rocks fell at God valley and that he owes her for life, as in a lifelong debt. Not "He has her to thank, for still being alive"

Well, one of the current emperors might either die or basically get demoted (no longer considered an emperor). So it might be that the number will still be 4, with luffy being one of them.
The was a time when Whitebeard was a playable character in some games that involved a versus mode and they didn't make him use his devil fruit powers since Oda hadn't introduced them yet (he only had a brief invincibility mode), so fans assumed he didn't have them until the Paramount War started. I do remember it was quite a surprise when he used his power for the first time.
I would imagine big mom keeping her slim form, all of that training might keep her at a lean, and muscular figure like Yamato, but using a cloud sword with a flame dial. Maybe Mihawk can have her as a rival, he only cares about strength, and skill, I would imagine him not liking how big mom relies on the cloud sword abilities, but with all the years of training with both Haki, and the sword, it would most likely be a black blade, big mom always seem to be using Haki, on a scale that makes her almost invincible, now adding in her devoting years of training to evolve her Haki, and swordsmanship Mihawk would have a interesting rivalry with her.
i believe WB is the only one who won't suffer so much from losing his DF , on the other hand i see kaido , BB and BM being way too nerfed without them almost as naruto without kurama or 6 paths powers , all while shanks remains the wildcard in the group cuz we don't know much about him (as usual)

13:00 I think it's influence that makes an emperor. They rule the new world. Almost everything in the new world either is under the protection of a yonko or is in active resistance against it. Almost nothing happens in the new world without the involvement of at least one of the yonko to some capacity. It's the reason why Mihawk is not an emperor. While he has a lot of individual strength he just doesn't have much influence or relevance outside of his one island. Also the emperors are strong enough to keep the world government at bay with power alone.
The way I see it, whether Blackbeard woulda become an emperor comes down to how completely we remove Devil Fruits from his story. If we just say he never found the yami yami, but everything else stays the same, I agree with you, but if we say that he never even wanted it, then I think he maybe still could've become a yankou. If instead of lying low waiting to find the fruit he had actually trained his body and his haki continuously, if he had spent that time being productive in his training, he might've become very dangerous sans fruit.
Tekking you should look into the African Pantheon. It would make an awesome video because there is a lot of similarities between death fruits and there creation story.
Blackbeard is underated because he takes double pain so his defense is probably crazy to be able to handle a direct attack from whitebeard so without the double damage it barely does anything

I do admit that without their devil fruits their threat level will drop significantly since they won't be able wield such destructive powers. They still have indestructable bodies. Keep in mind big mom still had that iron balloon body and kaido literally jumped 10,000 feet without using his devil fruit and still survived. I don't think they honestly could have improved their haki bc they seemed to have mastered it. All of them have had decades to improve their fighting styles. They all used the three types of haki (minus Blackbeard) at least at one point. Plus it seems like they all could use the advanced application of each too. Physically I think the yonko are each at their zenith. They aren't getting any stronger than what they are now if anything time and age would eventually make them weaker like the dying whitebeard. Their devil fruits just make things easier. Without em they would just take longer to destroy things.
Something I really want is a strong character with a Devil Fruit they don't even use for combat.

I think a worthy note is that he kinda did one-shot luffy at the beginning of the wana arc in his regular form, obviously luffy is much stronger now but luffy at the time was still technically considered strong enough to be considered an emperor himself.
The world government and other yonkos didn't recognize Luffy as a yonko back when Morgan spread that news around.

I don't think there was anything in the manga that said Kaido would have died if not for the fruit at God Valley. Big Mom merely states that on the day that Rocks crew fell in God Valley, she gave him the fruit which puts him in a life long debt to her.

BigMom, Kaido and Whitebeard would have definitely still be at the strength of Yonko even if they didn't have their DFs. However they would have probably all gone down the same path of Shanks in the Haki spectrum, which would be quite boring for us the audience to see them fight. Oda is most likely intending for Shanks to have the strongest Haki currently, so if the rest didn't have their DFs the variety in combat would have been like "we already seen this to the audience". Now Blackbeard himself will most likely never have become a Yonko without the DF, he even stated himself that if he didn't find the Yami Yami no Mi he will have to give up his dream. It was basically important checkbox for him

I think the concept of the Yonkou is overly simplified to simple combat ability. Of course it helps if you can solo an army, but what it usually means is that you have the requisite power (not just individual combat ability) to be considered a threat to any other ruling power.
I think it helps to think of the Yonkou as nation states... A weak person commanding that power would still be considered a monumental threat. So I think with or without their devil fruits, the power the Yonkou wield would still hold
Yeah, Yonkou is a sort of Quasi-Political position, that is mainly achieved through power initially but sustained through influence and diplomatics. As no matter how powerful Kaido or Big Mom is individually, they can only be at one place at one time, which would leave any territory they have claimed prior defenseless.
It's not to dissimilar from how Bounties in One Piece, while mainly acquired by fearsome and powerful pirates through power and conflict, are still just a portrayal of how big of a threat someone is to the World Government (Like Nico Robin getting a 80 million berri bounty when she was just an eight year old kid with little to no fighting ability).
Of course, one needs some form of power to maintain both of these, but combat ability isn't the only form of power in the series. I mean, if someone had built Pluton for example, then even if the person in question is weak by themselves and has no combat ability, that is still an ancient weapon right there. It would be the equivalent of someone in our world owning a High Yield Nuclear Missle, you might be able to knock em' out in hand to hand, but if they fire that missle, then anything within that blast and fallout radius is pretty much doomed. (Dr. Vegapunk would be a good example of this, he doesn't sound like much of a fighter, he is arguebly one of the most influencial people in the entire world due to his technological prowess)
Shanks is more of an outlier and is probably a Yonkou through his connections to the Gorosei and how he seems to know a lot about the world which people aren't supposed to know, making him a theoretical massive threath to the government if he made his knowledge of the world public.

Big mom without her devil fruit is an interesting question, because how much of her personality/the way she turned out had to do with her Soul Soul fruit and eating Mother Caramel and probably being influenced by her soul. The flashback of the fight with whitebeard and roger shows what appeared to be a fight that didnt involve a devil fruit at all from whitebeard or roger, after all whitebeard was able to clash with roger with nothing but the haki on his weapon and roger with his, whitebeard is a pirate king candidate with or without a devil fruit, he simply didnt have a motivation to pursue the one piece treasure cause he didnt believe in it.
I don't think it's that he didn't believe in the one piece, he just wanted a family. He had already reached his goal.
I have to agree with you there Tekking. That one time Whitebeard hit Akainu with a quake fist to the face, especially in the anime, looked like it was a finisher. This man Shirohige shattered Sakazuki and this man walked away with a lot less damage than I thought he should have sustained. Maybe Akainu protected himself with armament haki, but still
maybe he turned his body into magma at the last minute, that would stop alot of the quake damage

@@theenjeneer2792 Well maybe Akainu is alot stronger than we give him credit for, also, WB wasnt anywhere near full health, he had been stabbed multiple times, and his insides were charred by a magma attack, and half his face destroyed from a magma attack at the time he attacked Akainu, so it is very possible WB was highly weakened, like Vegeta after he was hit with the spirit bomb then came back, and couldnt figure out why his finishing move didnt destroy gohan goku and krillen, the fact he could do that to Akainu anyway in that shape, being way less than 100% from the start of the fight is more than a feat on it's own

Well she is physically strong and without being able to rely on her Devil Fruit she would need to be stronger still. Hell, it could be the joke again that she burns all those calories trying to swim after the Sunny and I could easily see Oda doing that as the joke and reason why she could catch up. Hell, as someone else down below in the comments points out, Rayleigh is an amazing swimmer and he's still a "normal" human without a Devil Fruit power, just physical strength even at his age.

They can still use the coup de burst to get advantage, so unless she could *really* swim faster than she can fly, she would fall behind at least a little.

Black beard is the most interesting because even without a DF he was still strong enough to nearly kill Ace in one hit, lifted Whitebeard off of his feet with an uppercut, throw massive boulders off of himself, scar Shanks while also receiving no noticeable wounds, and kill Thatch. Granted it seems like he stabbed Thatch in the back but that would require him to sneak up on a commander of Whitebeard's crew and attack him without being noticed through haki. He likely had other plans such as; "When Whitebeard dies I'll finally reveal myself as a new Emperor by killing the rest of the crew", "I'll just find another DF", or even "Wait until Whitebeard dies so I can eat the Gura Gura no mi". He likely had other plans and ways of becoming an Emperor, it just would've taken longer.
He did all of that with a devil fruit except for scarring Shanks(admittedly impressive) and killing Thatch which as you already said was probably a back stab and not actually a fight. He killed white beard by ganging up on him with his entire crew after Newgate had half his head blown off by akainu, a hole in his chest, and a absurd amount of wounds that got tallied up when he finally did die. Black beard is FAR from weak but compared to big mom or kaido he's not that impressive. His most impressive feat is how well his schemes pay off like they pay off really well hence why he's currently one of the strongest pirates alive and a yonko currently

Even if Shanks didn’t kill him, he may have still been a Yonko and died around the time Shanks rose to power. I thought Shanks having the map (which… I guess was a lie, haven’t watched Marineford in a while either) might’ve given more credence to the idea, but the theory isn’t reliant on it.
John’s notoriety, and particularly his immense treasure, do indicate to me that he’s among the more likely candidates for former Yonko. None of the other former Rocks Pirates seem to have much of a claim to fame, aside from the ones who became Yonko, and Shiki, who doesn’t seem to have.

I mean technically, if Kaido never got the fruit he'd probably have been captured or unalived in god valley, therefore never making it to the level of Yonko because his career would've been cut short. In fact depending on how all of that went down Kaido, Big Mom, and Whitebeard might have never made it out of god valley. However them not having fruits may have even affected their place on Rock's crew at the time, it might not but who knows why those three specifically were actually picked up by Rocks, but hey that's just a theory, an ANIME THEORY!
Nothing in the manga says that Kaido was near death in God valley. Big mom herself only states that she gave him the fruit on the day that Rocks fell at God valley and that he owes her for life, as in a lifelong debt. Not "He has her to thank, for still being alive"

The term "Yonkou" could just mean that there are 4 emperors of the sea. Before Shanks, there were 3 emperors, now with Luffy, there are 5 emperors.
Well, one of the current emperors might either die or basically get demoted (no longer considered an emperor). So it might be that the number will still be 4, with luffy being one of them.
The yonkou system is ending post-wano. There are no "replacements"

I would imagine big mom keeping her slim form, all of that training might keep her at a lean, and muscular figure like Yamato, but using a cloud sword with a flame dial. Maybe Mihawk can have her as a rival, he only cares about strength, and skill, I would imagine him not liking how big mom relies on the cloud sword abilities, but with all the years of training with both Haki, and the sword, it would most likely be a black blade, big mom always seem to be using Haki, on a scale that makes her almost invincible, now adding in her devoting years of training to evolve her Haki, and swordsmanship Mihawk would have a interesting rivalry with her.

I think it's influence that makes an emperor. They rule the new world. Almost everything in the new world either is under the protection of a yonko or is in active resistance against it. Almost nothing happens in the new world without the involvement of at least one of the yonko to some capacity. It's the reason why Mihawk is not an emperor. While he has a lot of individual strength he just doesn't have much influence or relevance outside of his one island.
Also the emperors are strong enough to keep the world government at bay with power alone.
The way I see it, whether Blackbeard woulda become an emperor comes down to how completely we remove Devil Fruits from his story. If we just say he never found the yami yami, but everything else stays the same, I agree with you, but if we say that he never even wanted it, then I think he maybe still could've become a yankou. If instead of lying low waiting to find the fruit he had actually trained his body and his haki continuously, if he had spent that time being productive in his training, he might've become very dangerous sans fruit.

Tekking you should look into the African Pantheon. It would make an awesome video because there is a lot of similarities between death fruits and there creation story.

Blackbeard is underated because he takes double pain so his defense is probably crazy to be able to handle a direct attack from whitebeard so without the double damage it barely does anything

Tekking, I personally disagree about the kaido take because if you remember kaido eating the azure dragon devil fruit is the reason he survived god valley. As stated by big mom. So if we’re assuming this to be true then with out the fruit kaido would’ve perished on god valley before he became a Yonko
