The age of virtual reality is upon us (again) with a torrent of devices and content launching throughout 2016.
There has been a buzz around virtual reality (VR) for the past few years. Some of this has come from the lengthy development of devices like Oculus Rift, but also through a growing interest in what we'll be able to get VR to do in the modern era.
The idea of VR isn't new. It's been circulating in the tech space for a number of years, but recently, the technology has broken through some of the long-standing barriers. Enabling access has helped, with devices like Google's Cardboard opening the door for anyone with a smartphone, right up to demonstrating what a fully-fledged premium system like HTC Vive will be capable of. We now have the power in home computers for lifelike virtual environments and this makes it a much more exciting time for VR.
So, without further ado, we've listed some of the top VR systems available. Their prices range dramatically, and some haven't actually been officially launched yet, but they're all worth being aware of, as you'll be seeing a lot more of VR in 2016

how do you operate the phone when wearing such VR headsets ? What if i want to use an app and that needs touching the screen at various moments for settings. Then how would we do that ?

Good review but you omitted to mention that although cheap, the VR Box's design allows for Augmented Reality gaming and applications - not just VR only... that actually matters a great deal to many people - especially developers - so the cheaper price point is actually a plus is you want a set to use for AR apps and games. Also, very inexpensive bluetooth controllers work great with almost all these HMDs, and reaching up to your face for control kinda destroys the immersive experience for games (although it's very handy if watching movies). Nice review though - keep up the good work.

you forgot about the VRGO! I love that headset and it's only $40!
VRGO has some of the best features. Has a button to touch the screen and is dirt cheap at £18 and light weight.

I bought the Noon VR headset, seems pretty good (the only other one I've used is the Samsung VR). The Noon VR app doesn't have much good content, imo. FYI: the general purpose mounting frame is removable and can be replaced w/ a customized frame but the customized frames are not commercially available, they have to be created on a 3d printer (per Noon cx support).
I'm looking for something convenient for Nexus 6P. Something that you can suggest?

the gear vr is the most immersive because it has the best lenses. dome style ones.
It makes more sense getting the vr box and shinecon, if your going to spend over a $100 just save up and get an oculus
I think the gear vr is the best because of the controlls and the oculus store and it has build in sensore so that the headtracking is way better than on any other headset
So far it is the "Vive" or "Occulus Rift" of mobile VR. So I agree AND can confirm with the points you mentioned because I've been using a Gear VR for 1 1/2 weeks now.
Virtual Reality is still in it's infancy so there will be a wide range of HMD of varying quality from the HTC Vive/Occulus Rift to some cardboard headset that you can buy from you local 24/HR Deli on the corner, until there is a minimum high standard set for Hardware and Software for Virtual Reality.
You can just install the oculus store, slap on VR box and your in the game.
+Lego Films 2.0 I don't know if this is actually possible, but from my knowledge it isn't. The Oculus Store apps and Oculus Home all take advantage of the built in sensors in the Gear VR to create lower latency movement. The Oculus Store is also designed as a closed system on mobile - to my knowledge it is only meant to work with the Gear VR and is designed to prevent any HMD using it. All the other mobile headsets seem to simply be a more comfortable, higher quality Google Cardboard viewer.

you should prob change the title to top "mobile" VR headsets. big difference between these and PC or console based HMDs

OKULARION, the first wireless Mixed Reality (VR & AR) standalone headset priced under $300 including two controllers just got launched on Kickstarter.
I have a Homido headset which I use with my Note 3, the clamp that holds the phone is secure but it is also hell getting the phone in and out without catching phone buttons. Also having no controls on it makes it a pain navigating certain apps.
Also not sure if its because of my phone, but I can only use vr for very short periods as it makes me feel sick :(
Motion sickness is definitely common for people with phone based HMDs. The lack of proper headtracking, low persistence displays, and high refresh rates definitely causes issues for a lot of people.

computer attached VR. oculus rift is amazing but u need a strong computer n is a lot more expensive
***** iPhone is a smartphone. And yes, smartphone VR sets only rotate 360 degrees and not even smoothly so it gives a bit a weird view. Fun for videos but I wouldn't consider it true VR at all due to it only having that one feature, 360 rotation.
Robert depends on the virtual video ur watching. some videos arent all that good but the well made ones from the app store are great on vr sets
I mean to be honest, smartphone-based VR also costs less than 10% what a PC based setup does. Even the "high end" mobile VR stuff caps out at about 1/5 of an Oculus. Bobo VR Z4 has close to the FoV of a vive at a cost of $20 and Vridge lets you run it with steam vr or oculus software.
Yeah it's definitely not as good but I don't expect a bicycle to be as good as a car either. Hell with Vridge and Nolo you can even do roomscale on one of these headsets.

This entire thing is mostly obsolete; the BoboVR is the best Cardboard viewer available from what I've heard, but if you want a headset for your phone, the best bet is with either Daydream or Gear VR.
Is the Gear VR the only headset in which you can use your camera to see around you so you don't bump into things?
Can you put the Noon VR Cover back on once you have attached your smart phone on the front?

Unfortunately missing from the sub-$100 are the attractive sets from Baofeng Mojing, the BOBOVR sets with wide POV, even the newest Ritech Riem units. Most of what you can find on GearBest, really.
Though it was useful to me to see Shinecon reviewed and be reminded of what's good about N∞N.
How would noon vr or zeiss compare to something like the fiit vr 2s

the Samsung vr is 1of the best cause it has oculus lens and app so you don't feel bored as you have lot of games videos you can also sign in to Facebook and watch 360 photos and videos

You compare cheap Chinese headset. But there are Bobovr z4 and Baofeng Mojing IV (this is the fourth version of the points from these firms). Bobovr very good. Baofeng made better, but a little blur the edge of the picture. And both versions have the immersion points comparable to the samsung and oculus.

Virtual Reality is here, along with a wide range of quality until the market stabilizes with an acceptable level of standards of hardware and software I guess.
I have the Gear VR and I am quite impressed (but it's my first VR experience) and it will tide me over until I get a good enough hardware to run the vanguards of VR so far either the HTC Vive or Occulus Rift (depending on the Occulus touch controls and additional camera)d
Trust me, the Rift is incredible. I've had mine for about 3 days, and I've logged 10 or so hours on it.
The rift is pretty cool.If you have any chance on trying out a vive I would hold out on buying a rift. After trying room scale vr on the vive nothing else can really compare.

I admit I watched a couple of VR porn videos (professional, not some amateur video) and I have to say it's actually pretty good. The porn stars are life sized and can get pretty close to your face!!
