Mod that allows to choose traits at the beginning is a such a good idea. Lets be honest we all at some point rolled million dupes in search of the perfect ones. Time saver!
so much stuff in episode one, love this play style and the care taken with priorities, something most series dont touch on and i love the style of this base
@Neil Thomas you think it’s good to know what you’re getting into. This game requires planning and heading in a direction. You definitely want to stay ahead of problems and not get surprised by them. This game has an okay tutorial but doesn’t really show you how everything is influenced or linked together.
I'm 165 hours in and only half sure of what i'm doing, and this helped A LOT. So thank you for your time and effort, and especially your editing technique keeping things moving and interesting.
This is great and informative even with new game updates. You can now compost seeds or feed them to Pacu. And oxylite no longer loses mass when mined. Hmm I think that's about all the differences that I noticed so far.
Thank you very much for the video! Your management of dupe time and priorities is very helpful (especially enabling proximity). Your build efficiency is also really good (not many people get that much done in the first 11 cycles). I do have a few observations for you and your viewers to help them better survive this delightfully brutal game: 1. Your initial rooms that are in the center of your base are a little undersized. The most common room size is 64 tiles, which means your rooms should be 16 tiles wide. This isn't really a big deal since most rooms that people build in the center don't HAVE to be max size, but later on that extra space becomes helpful depending on what you're doing with them (your bathroom is an excellent example of this because if it were max size you could fit four toilets and four sinks in it, or sack one of each for a couple showers). 2. The mess hall could have been built out to include the initial nine tables you put in the room. With the room height of 4 if you placed the wall next to the furthest table that would have only been 60 tiles (4 under the mess hall maximum). 3. Your statement about farm yield is a little misleading. Plants in a farm tile (non wild) must have all of their requirements met in order to grow, but do not receive additional yield from meeting those requirements. You could say they receive additional yield because they are not wild (since their domestic life cycle is 1/4 their wild life cycle). 4. Also, the mealwood plants in your nature reserve could be put on auto harvest like the ones on the right side of your base. Auto harvest only destroys the plant if they are muckroot or a decorative plant. 5. Building a nature reserve is extremely helpful to improve morale of your dupes with little effort, but they have to enter the room in order to get the morale bonus. Since your NR is on the edge of your base and you didn't set the plants to auto harvest they have almost no reason to enter that room. It could become beneficial later on if you expand and force them through that room, but early on this room is best utilized if it is put in a common path that the dupes have to pass through frequently. 6. It looks like you have some mods in the game and one in particular is kind of a big deal. You have something which allows your dupes to dig and build 5 tiles high, but in the base game they can only dig and build 4 tiles high. This would drastically change how they approach building as you expand, so some people may be a little confused why their dupes aren't as efficient as yours. 7. Egg shells do not need to be placed under water because they do not off gas. I could see you composting it if you really needed to, but egg shells are far more useful as lime later on when you begin producing steel so I would recommend putting them next to the rock crusher instead. 8. This is more of a preference but I would recommend prioritizing air flow tiles a little sooner. You were having some oxygen distribution issues in the base that could be alleviated with these, and you wouldn't have to build a second diffuser so soon (I have commonly run a base with as many as 7 dupes with only one diffuser, and by the time I need a second I have moved on to the electrolyzer).
Hey there! Thanks for taking the time to go into details with some of those tips! Some things are preference but now that I also know a bit more about the game I agree almost 100%;)
Thank you! This is one of the most clearly narrated gameplay videos/tutorials I've ever seen. I don't plan on buying this game but this is very fun to watch.
Just got the game on sale. After my first failed attempt I watched your video. My head is still spinning from all the info you managed to spit out in 30 minutes. Thank you
I have downloaded this adventure not even 24 hours ago and your video has already been a great seed that will hopefully sprout! Very clear and detailed and concise. Excellent. Thank you.
I played this way back when it's only the starting location was the vanilla meteor. Now I came back and it all came back to me how anxious inducing and fun this game is. I definitely need a refresher and I actually learned alot in this video.
I just discovered ONI and found your channel while I was browsing for help videos. So far this is the most interesting and comprehensive overview I’ve seen. You do a really good job!
You so lucky, one of the water ponds are next to you. Every time i try to start a game, the water ponds always organise a blockade under me, and i can't terraform the whole forest biome.
I tend to prioritize a central storage for clean water, and a waste water dump. I've never made individual rooms for the dupes, I just have a barracks-style room. I usually run into a wall where I'm out of coal, and can't get alternate power up fast enough. I prefer to have water sorted early, because then I can set up water and air reclamation. It also helps to deal with liquid pockets, if I have somewhere to pump the water to. Perhaps just separating my dupes into three shifts early on would help since I wouldn't be wasting part of the day.
I started watching Ultimate Series 3.0 and then you mentioned this series and I have to start here! I have to learn so my base keeps evolving and I stop dropping it when it gets too complicated!
GOOD TIP!...all you need is 1 some something to get it in the pod....like when you first start playing you will never get steel to show up....but after you make 1 batch it CAN show up.....that in its self is not to useless but it can help....but you can make it work better is diging down for fossil and use the pod to get some without the hot temps (pod is random so yea)
Great video, explaining the early game very well indeed. I've been playing this game for a long time, so sadly I didn't learn anything new. But still entertaining to watch and I look forward to this series. 👍
btw Nathan, digging up oxylite is no problem, in block form it only emmits 50% of its mass resulting in the same total mass of Oxygen produced whether mined or not
You should create distributed schedules, early-on, which distribute sleep-schedules early. Spread so they start with at-least four even splits. That will make you survive almost the whole game, with just three toilets and sinks. (That will manage up to, roughly, 72 dupes.) This also makes it easy to manage "snoring" sleepers and day/night bonuses, and help keep a steady run-time for the machines. You will never have a moment where something breaks-down or fails, and no-one is awake to respond to the issue. (Turn off the main alarm and use room alarms, if needed.) Just be sure to keep your "delivery" people awake when people are "working"... While your "Tidy" people are working opposite them. (Filling storage that has just been emptied.) The dupes will/should grab close items on the ground first. If your "tidy" guys are picking everything up, while they work... then the delivery people have to run all the way back to storage to get things for them to work with. Unless you actually "live" in an area... No need to pick everything up. (Unless it is to stop creatures from eating your drops. But that can be a good thing too. A few pieces of junk for valuable coal-droppings or some other junk, for more potential "meat" in the future, without the ability or need to farm.)
I just started playing the game and was having a hard time at that, and after seeing this vid, the details are very helpful, the shifts, priorities, simply amazing man.
I'm on cycle 40 on my first playthough and just discovered that you get bonuses if you have dedicated rooms. Up until now I used doors just to block of gases .. oh boi xD. Gotta start all over, I guess.
One little thing right off the bat: you should move the pitcher pump 1 block to the right, and build 1 block up before stepping over to the pitcher pump. That way, when a dupe makes a mess (it'll happen eventually), unless it happens right in the middle of them fetching water, you're sure it doesn't get into your fresh water.
Just started playing a few weeks ago ive managed to kill 5 colonies in the midgame, so ive decided to follow along with someone else to learn all the tips and tricks. This game is so complicated!!!
I know this is pretty old video, but the amount of information you were able to fit in 30 minutes is just incredible! I have about 100 hours in this game, but I wasn’t able to figure out such beginner things and I’m surprised how much I didn’t even know (and I learned that from a single video here). It’s just so complex. I’m definitely gonna watch the rest of your channel, well done. :)
This is very helpful. I played Oxygen Not Included last weekend and though I enjoyed it I struggled really hard. Great job at explaining things. I am excited to watch more of your videos!
I'm not use prioritys almost at all, just slightly prioritise talented ranchers to focus on their main task, and ok with 1000+ cycles, even grilling or research is not set in prioritys. Prioritising can help some, but also can get you in trouble. Strong prioritising makes colony LESS effective, so i almost dont touch it to lower my colony maintainance and better safety and try my best in manage routing and placing things when planning base. I see huge disadvanages on routing and suboptimal build in this video.
This has gotten me as far as I could get before although a few new items I had either done a different way or didn't think about. Looking forward to the next episodes to finally get into a new zone for the first time.
Thanks so much for this video. It is nicely explained, and at a good pace. Many tutorials I found on RUclips were too fast and glossed over things that were very complicated. They also relied on a lot of tricks and fancy builds, but I like to let the game guide me and not over-complicate things. You earned a sub from me! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Brothgar has a lot of modded and vanilla playthroughs on his channel going way back. He engineers the crap out of every base, but he does a good job of explaining things, just like Nathan.
@@Nathans-Sandbox I actually just started this new game, and built my first room in the areas with no oxygen. In this case, the clones need to sleep without breathing, and always ran back to the ground for fresh air in the middle of their sleep. Orz......
I need all the help I can get honestly! Oxygen Not Included is one of those games that is really fun to watch others play for hours on end. Which is why I got it. But it's kind of a nightmare to play as a beginner in actuality. I end up getting really stressed out rather than enjoying the game at all. I'm constantly having to look up how to do everything. Like what room sizes should be. Or how to do a basic toilet loop for instance. Or how on Earth you ranch and what animals to ranch. Or what 90% of the research is even for. I think in my last game I got up to having to set up a proper power grid. I had no idea what to do and I was watching all these tutorials and getting more and more stressed and confused. I'm also a perfectionist so I hate screwing things up or doing things inefficiently. But I'm also terrible at design and the kind of problem solving needed in the game. So it doesn't go well for me hahaha
This is so brilliant thank you! Love the narrating and efficient building style. Does this playlist go through the gameplay and progression step by step until the completion of the game or is it more like a tips-style series. Thank you! 😃
I'm just playing the game trying to mention everything I know. It's not a tutorial series in that sense and since the game is quite open ended, at some point I lost interest in that save game and started a new one.;)
I live this game so i live this vid! And your channel Edit: can you please do more prison architect because i lllooooovvvveee that game i even got it my self
The priority system is the only thing that dictates what they do. It doesn't matter what they like. Their preferred work means they will learn that skill quicker and lose less moral when spending skill points in it. Also you're wrong about the off priority, they will never do that job if you set it to off.
i really enjoyed you city skylines series when i found it, so i was surprised to see in my recommendations that you recently played ONI, which has been my favorite game to watch others play this year guess i'm oerdue in subscribing, because i just love your style. looking forward to watching this series and more.
Just started playing this the other day, and was feeling lost about some stuff. This video was great to help me figure out what I should prioritize, and give me a bit of an idea for a base layout! One thing I didn't understand though was the water dump in between the food storage. Is that to help insulate the storage area, or is there a different purpose that I missed? Thanks!
The water will help even out the temperatures of the resources I'm storing in there. Sometimes you will grab really hot or cold mats in the world and this way you prevent that temp from spreading.
I look forward to this, I've played for a few hours (almost 2 years ago) and reach a point where I didn't really know what to do or why to do anything (I.E. everything just worked and there wasn't really anything pushing me to research anything) , so I didn't and stopped playing.
@@Nathans-Sandbox That's actually the reason I started watching your series! :D Any quality-of-life mods you recommend to improve the experience for new players or do you recommend vanilla for the first(-ish) time?
Sorry for the late answer. Pliers or Pliers Fixed is a must. I also like better deselect and bigger building menus. There are others but I kept it as vanilla as possible since the DLC is being developed still.
Uuuuh! Nice seeing you enjoying yourself like this. Not gonna lie, I still don't get much of the 'technical' aspects of this game, but you make it quite enjoyable to see, nonetheless. Hope it goes well and you can finish the series succesfully, have a bit (or a lot) of fun, and don't have the channel suffer from it
Bro I am almost to dumb for this tutorial one of my guys somehow managed to get himself stuck while trying to make the food storage area and suffocated but now I am doing much better (got a farmer before life support because of bad luck but you just got to roll with the punches I guess) I absolutely love this tutorial though
Nathan, awesome video. One correction though, you can actually mine oxylite without losing any emitted oxygen. The wiki says that as a solid tile, it only emits half of the mass it loses per second, but as debris it emits 100% of its mass.
Only the speed of emission changes, not the mass with oxylite. A solid tile takes less time to emit everything I believe. But you don't lose anything. Not sure what I said in the video though;)
you should allow ranching at low priority or your haulers will not pick animal sacks up. I usually set toggling to max for everyone and life suppport to max up until i have dedicated haulers.
Mod that allows to choose traits at the beginning is a such a good idea. Lets be honest we all at some point rolled million dupes in search of the perfect ones. Time saver!

They also relied on a lot of tricks and fancy builds, but I like to let the game guide me and not over-complicate things. You earned a sub from me! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Thank you, I'm glad this is the type of video you were looking for. Hope you'll have fun with the game;)
Wow that was great! Now I see what I was doing all wrong. Thank you!
Have fun with the game!;)
I love this game, I watched Blitz’s play through, but couldn’t find anyone else, so thank you for playing it😄
Brothgar has a lot of modded and vanilla playthroughs on his channel going way back. He engineers the crap out of every base, but he does a good job of explaining things, just like Nathan.
👍
this is like a game for smart people
Just needs getting to know the features and possibilities, definitely not a game for just relaxing;)
Honestly the best tutorial ever :O
Klei always design games that are very complicated and difficult to start with, so I really need this guide.
Yes, they are surprisingly complicated;)
@@Nathans-Sandbox I actually just started this new game, and built my first room in the areas with no oxygen.
In this case, the clones need to sleep without breathing, and always ran back to the ground for fresh air in the middle of their sleep. Orz......
Hehe, I know the feeling;)
Just started watching and I’m already interested!
Sweet!;)
This was so helpful already and I’ve had this game for a year! Thank you 🙏
My pleasure!
I've been doing everything wrong!!! xD Love this tutorial, Thanks Nathan
Glad it helped!;)
i just bought this game on sale and it's not easy. there is so much to learn before being able to play it correctly.
That's true, but once you get to know it a little it's really rewarding!
Hehe don't give up, eventually you get the hang of it!
This is incredibly satisfying
Glad you see it that way;)
This is really nicely explained compared to most other videos out there. Thank you!
Glad you think that;)
This is so brilliant thank you!
Thanks for helping me understand this game... looking forward to the next video as I follow along.
Glad to hear it!
Should mention about the shine bugs that if gets stuck in the rooms irritate sleepers
👍
Just started this game yesterday and my brain feels overloaded 😭😭😭😭😭 but great video non the less!
It's a steep learning curve;)
i feel you xD I got this game a while ago and i think on cycle 24 i was just learning about computers
I live this game so i live this vid!
And your channel
Edit: can you please do more prison architect because i lllooooovvvveee that game i even got it my self
Sweet!:)
love this video. cant even keep up with all the stuff you have going on. your brain is next level
Hehe, nono just have most of the learning curve behind me;)
this game is good to play with friends for sure!
👍
Man I alway had trouble playing cuz everybody did everything I always just rushed to space and u made my playing style completely
I agree, getting established first and then you can take your sweet time with space.
@@Nathans-Sandbox bruh
Wow this is so neat...really awesome actually.
Cheers;)
I tried playing on my own and missed shit ton of things.
Glad I met this video.
The game has a steep learning curve;)
The priority system is the only thing that dictates what they do. It doesn't matter what they like. Their preferred work means they will learn that skill quicker and lose less moral when spending skill points in it. Also you're wrong about the off priority, they will never do that job if you set it to off.
This game is amazing
Plz make the series like these a reak series☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
Let's cross fingers it runs well on the channel;)
you're so good at this game!
Hope the video helps;)
Awesome video. Explaining everything was key. I've been playing a long time and learned some things I haven't been doing. Thanks.
My pleasure! It's a hard game to get the hang of and I noticed a lot of the newer LPs don't explain anything anymore;)
i really enjoyed you city skylines series when i found it, so i was surprised to see in my recommendations that you recently played ONI, which has been my favorite game to watch others play this year
guess i'm oerdue in subscribing, because i just love your style. looking forward to watching this series and more.
Thanks so much glad you found me;)
Ahhh yes a quality content to binge to
👍😁
Wow city skylines and oxygen two of my favorite games!
That's perfect;)
Incredibly informative and well-made. Thank you for the video!
My pleasure:)
i love it. keep up the great work!
👍
Just started playing this the other day, and was feeling lost about some stuff. This video was great to help me figure out what I should prioritize, and give me a bit of an idea for a base layout! One thing I didn't understand though was the water dump in between the food storage. Is that to help insulate the storage area, or is there a different purpose that I missed? Thanks!
The water will help even out the temperatures of the resources I'm storing in there. Sometimes you will grab really hot or cold mats in the world and this way you prevent that temp from spreading.
Goodluck on managing your dupes, nathan..
If you want more pro tips? I suggest to watch francis john. I highly recommend his channel
👍
Great video! Thanks.
👍
this looks very cool and i might try it later
I can only recommend;)
Your voice is very calming
☺
I look forward to this, I've played for a few hours (almost 2 years ago) and reach a point where I didn't really know what to do or why to do anything (I.E. everything just worked and there wasn't really anything pushing me to research anything) , so I didn't and stopped playing.
Hope you get back into it! It's a great game;)
@@Nathans-Sandbox That's actually the reason I started watching your series! :D
Any quality-of-life mods you recommend to improve the experience for new players or do you recommend vanilla for the first(-ish) time?
Sorry for the late answer. Pliers or Pliers Fixed is a must. I also like better deselect and bigger building menus. There are others but I kept it as vanilla as possible since the DLC is being developed still.
Uuuuh! Nice seeing you enjoying yourself like this. Not gonna lie, I still don't get much of the 'technical' aspects of this game, but you make it quite enjoyable to see, nonetheless. Hope it goes well and you can finish the series succesfully, have a bit (or a lot) of fun, and don't have the channel suffer from it
I do indeed enjoy it. The channel was dying again anyways, like many times in the past;)
Bro I am almost to dumb for this tutorial one of my guys somehow managed to get himself stuck while trying to make the food storage area and suffocated but now I am doing much better (got a farmer before life support because of bad luck but you just got to roll with the punches I guess) I absolutely love this tutorial though
Glad the videos help! Good luck on your journey!;)
What sacks do you mean?
I like to build double stacked doors so that gasses can flow more freely
I use that trick too, I felt it wasn't necessary for this setup. Did it for my newest playthrough though.
You so good at explaining and i like it
Thank you;)
