    I gotta say, Simba is the people's champ as a fantastic pilot, but you really get a feel for his true skill when he winds up on GCI callouts. His ability to stay on top of the battlefield and manage the variables, vectoring the boys to safety like a dad coaching his kid on backing up a truck with a trailer, really speaks to his talent and discipline. Great work!

    • @swayzefan3600
      @swayzefan3600 Год назад +12

      @@blueberrywilbur315 the version ukraine used was the very first version- M39. the russians are always so kind to provide battle damage assessments to ukraine so on the debris we even saw the model number and it was made in 96. this version has a ~165km or 103 mile range... official of course. the next step up in ATACMs has a 300km range which was largely due to removing 2/3 of the bomblets (300 vs 950 in m39). also interesting to note these rely solely on internal guidance- GPS wasn't added until the later variants. would be extremely curious to know how close to the actual aim point these landed.
      im an engineer so ill get nerdy for a minute- but i have a suspicion we'd agreed to send these for a while, but only the variants we don't use which have been in the expired/retired inventory for well over a decade- which means they're supposed to be disposed of as are most of the expired cluster ammo of various types but the army always has trouble finding money for that ;)- i know some in congress were shocked we still had over 3 million 'evil' cluster 155mm shells lol. but to think everything still worked on these atacms after all these years sitting in a storage bunker for it to still be able to hit its target and work as advertised is amazing to me, and i know from working on equipment (not mil but in the aerospace field) electronics and anything holding rocket fuel, batteries etc need regular maintenance- i think with ATACMs its 10 year intervals. but with them being in the expired inventory i doubt it got any of this. I have to imagine the actual holdup in getting these to ukraine was checking everything, replacing a lot of stuff (batteries for sure), probably a full refurb of a rocket variant we haven't worked on in a long time...and the whole publicly stating that we weren't going to send them was just a head-fake to the russians while we worked on getting them ready.

    It looks like you could have launched the MALDs earlier because they don't need to get to the target, just be inside the enemy ADU envelope long enough to drain their missiles. Yeah they could draw off the SHORAD stuff like the Shilkas when the ATACMS are in their terminal phase but they are still fast enough that the Shilkas would stuggle to target them.

    Another great video - with regards to the comments when the S400 launched at a target outside of it's range - it must take into account the predicted intercept point, which given the range & speed of the target would have been within the range of the missile. So it can fire outside the missile's range as it wouldn't actually need to go that far anyway.

    Has GR thought about doing a video on MALD tactics (over/above simple ingress straight to the SAMsitestuff)?
    Concept? or Concrete Balloon?
    You tell me.
    a) INCREASE SAM MISSLE-DRAIN RATE in a large conflict area:
    Problem Statement : burn a MALD for just ONE Grumble... ah hell no, lets go for 2 or 3 Sams per MALD!!
    Testcase : Set up the typical Risk overlapping Sam ranges (consult Kortana, or maybe use one of her previous Hanoi From Hell-type maps)
    Have the MALDs ingress into Sam#1-radar-circumference at a point near its overlap with a neighboring SamSite#2.
    MALD FLight path to arc into SAMSite#1 for 10 km (or estimated point where Sam is deployed against it) then arc into Circumference of SamSite#2 (hopefully before missile #1 closes on it.)
    Hopefully you'll get a launch from both Samsites on a single MALD, increasing the depletion rate.
    IFF you can slalom back/forth across the radar intersection region, see how many Sams you can draw from the two sites.
    Also, this may test/find-weaknesses in the Sam deconfliction coding between two sites (not sure if DCA is smart enough to include fire-control deconfliction code??)
    b) Make 2 MALDS look like a very scary JASSM/LRASM launch... suck up extra SAMs due to 'perceived higher threat'
    SAME ProbStatement as before. Different MALD tactic.
    (here I'm assuming a SAMsite like an S400 would perceive an incoming JAS SM or similar high-tech attack to be more dangerous, therefore, expend extra SAM or two to ensure a hit on it... assumes that DCS allows the pre-programming of mid-flight-path changes, perhaps changes in EW broadcasted 'camouflage' )
    Testcase : Single SamSite.
    Fire off a string of MALDs (2 or 3). Alignment should be single-file, vectoring directly toward the Samsite.
    Front MALD should broadcast a bomb-truck radar return.. something scary like a F15-SE
    Trailing MALDs should maintain stealthy-as-possible profile UNTIL
    - Lead MALD peals off, as if it just fired off it's load... head-for-the-hills mode of egress.
    - Trailing MALDs should alter EW-radar-return to be like that of a JASSM (make it a lightly too-vsible JASSM, so the radar takes the bait.
    These trailers should drop to low altitude and act like JASSMs homing in on the radar...maybe that threat will draw a few extra missiles.
    Variations on the theme?
    Have a tree-skimming MALD keep it's lowest profile, then suddenly broadcast a one of a couple threat' profiles:
    F15-SE
    A-10
    B-52 or B-1
    ... see which profile draws any extra missile designations.
    I dunno.... just early morning thoughts.

    You just said something that struck a note with me. You were talking about the AWACS jammers. Does any military have a missile that can jam as it’s flying from allowing any adversary knowledge that multiple missiles are inbound. Like, for instance, we fire the anti-ship missiles say 100 of them at the same time., The grim reapers fire say 10 AWACS version missiles that are capable of jamming the opponents radar. So they don’t know there is inbound missiles coming in. Is there any missile like that available in the military arsenal?

    • @AmirShafeek
      @AmirShafeek Год назад +1

      Because you can only fit a jammer in a missile. That's small. I would assume it's one thing to change your radar signature. But it's a whole another thing. In my opinion, to add multiple other signatures. I'm not saying the technology couldn't be made. I'm just saying that at this current point in history. I don't think that it exists. At least not at a small enough size to be slapped inside of a cruise missile.

    • @jonathanpfeffer3716
      @jonathanpfeffer3716 Год назад

      That’s not how jamming works. If a radar is a flashlight a jammer is a floodlight. Turning on a jammer will make your presence known to everyone but your specific location known to no one.

    • @michaelbrady9548
      @michaelbrady9548 Год назад

      Then can a missile like that work in a reverse order. My question was if 100 of those antiship missile’s were fired and you didn’t want them detected by the Gatling guns or missiles from ships. How would you hide their signature and my thought was to shoot other missiles that give a larger target array. To the skies, the inbound antiship missile’s. No I don’t fly with you guys. I’ve been following the Grim Reaper‘s for probably seven or eight years now. I am an over the road truck driver here in United States and what keeps me sane is watching you guys fly. Someday and I hope that comes soon I get to retire. I threatened a few times to come over to the UK to visit super Capt and the boys at one of the air shows. But I haven’t gotten the opportunity yet. Once again, I enjoy watching you guys fly. Thank you for the opportunity to ask questions.

    Great video GR, great video indeed.
    I suspect that they are going to increase the number of S-300V's being deployed in the AO to prevent this from happening as the S-300V is an ABM system primarily. Still a bit embarrasing that the Russians allowed one of their heliports being attacked by TBM's.

    For the tactic of scaring off an aggressor with a launch warning, is there any reason that a plane’s radar couldn’t be programmed to be able to mimic what a launch warning system picks up on? You could desensitize the target and confuse command/control loops

    speaking of SEAD i'd be curious if yall have done a full US Navy SEAD scenario, if you look up the manufactures video of the ADM-160 MALD it shows how it would work with a navy strike package of F-18s and Growlers breaching a heavily SAM laden coastline- using MALDs and the new AARGM-ER (newest harm variant) - that would make a cool video. the newest HARM has about a 100+ mile range and will lock onto the radars last known position so even if they shut the radar down after the harm is launched it will still come at it at around mach 3- that was the problem of earlier HARM missiles. Could be a real game changer and make it possible for even 4th gen to effectively deal with S-400 etc. Does DCS have that newer missile or Growlers?

    • @KG-gv1ds
      @KG-gv1ds Год назад +1

      I dont think DCS can accurately represent EW tactics aside from some radar jamming. Most of that stuff is super classified as far as the working mechanisms. Growlers plus superhornet missile trucks with malds and f35's in stealth config would make for an interesting but very predictable outcome :)

    ok really weird question. Saw it happen in a video the other day and got me thinking in this one... Could a SAM network be used to protect allied jets from enemy SAM missiles. Aka can a Patriot site shoot down an S400 missile of any sort. I know the pak 3s are only for shooting balistic missiles which go in a straight line but would that theoretically be possible. Some of the bigger SAMs are bigger than iskander (stuff the pak3 can shoot down). More of a hypothetical question not a realistic question

    • @MrDJAK777
      @MrDJAK777 Год назад

      Probably but it'd be weird for them to be so close to each other. Also pac 3 is good at just about everything (if a bit expensive for some ) not just ballistic missiles. And what modern Sam is bigger then iskander a 24 foot tall 3 foot around ballistic missile ?

    Afaik they sent a shorter range atacms which can do only 160km.
    I believe it's a short-sighted policy, the requirement not to attack targets on aggressor's territory is a major mistake. Russia has bluffed many a time that sending this or that weapons system to Ukraine is a red light not to be crossed, and backed down as soon as that happened.

  • @Joel-st5uw
    @Joel-st5uw Год назад

    I don't understand why you've continued to claim the US won't supply ATACMS because "they could be used against targets in Russia". If that was the case then wouldn't the same be true about Storm Shadow supplied by the UK? I don't know if *this* is true, but I read that ATACMS (and other US munitions) may be supplied with "rules" (i.e. "we'll supply them as long as you don't do XYZ with them"). Regardless, kind of a "don't bite the hand that feeds you" scenario. I just don't get why you didn't apply this same assumption to Storm Shadow.

    GLSDB's are going to be awesome. 150km range (93 miles) and comparatively dirt cheap, with six per launcher. Perfect to mix in with decoys, hell, it would be great if there was a decoy version of GLSDB. The US has hundreds of thousands of rocket motors that are nearing end of life and either need to be used or disposed of.
    Winter is going to be very, very warm for every Russian within 150km of the front lines.
    Also, right now Russian helicopters are the biggest issue for Ukrainian armor, would F16's be an effective deterrent? Also would F16's be effective Wild Weasel platforms?
    If only a Polish F35 pilot would "get lost" near the contact line and "accidentally" jam Russian air defense radars....

    • @MaxIsStrange1
      @MaxIsStrange1 Год назад +2

      As to the Wild Weasel question-the USAF currently uses slightly modified F-16C/D Block 50/52 (designated as F-16CJ or F-16DJ) as their Wild Weasel platform so it’s definitely suited for that role. It’s not nearly as capable as the F-35 which will gradually replace it as the Wild Weasel platform but the F-16 is still pretty capable and definitely comparable to other not-stealthy aircraft.

      Russian helicopters are far from the biggest issue for Ukrainian armor, that would be landmines and artillery, with an emphasis on the landmines.
      Some KA-52s did have a few exceptionally successful attacks, which were very highly publicized, but those are just a few stories. What you won’t see Russian headlines about is the sheer loss rate of KA-52s because those types of missions are actually extraordinarily dangerous. There’s no real terrain cover in the areas Ukraine is fighting in right now, so the only thing that was keeping the Kamovs safe was distance - at the time of those attacks no SHORAD was in the area and their MANPADs were outranged by the Kamov’s Vikhrs. This was why they were so successful at first when Ukrainian offensive operations started. Then Ukraine rolled out a slightly longer ranged SHORAD system to the front and shot down 3 of them in a single day and the Russians haven’t been able to use the KA-52s in that same way since.

What makes me cringe a bit it exploits the war in portraying events in a fashion that has nothing to do with reality.
