Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz", amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance.
The story is that while living in the Middle East, at age 6, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them.
Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true you, have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.”
From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.

Bottom line IMO: mastery demonstrated in phrasing, musicality, breath control, accentuation jazz influence, applies vocal ornaments as are most impactful..and.. It takes true talent to start a song Acapella and keep your pitch...finally, You DON'T HAVE TO BELT YOUR WAY THROUGH A PERFORMANCE, to achieve a moving, captivating, exquisite and stunning version of a classic rock song. For a point of reference, I strongly recommend you watch her black and white video of "I Put A Spell on You" She was 9 yrs old..and you will know learn how talented she was at this age...with 70M views, you'll understand exactly how long and talented this Prodigy truly is!! By this time, Angelina was a seasoned performer. She walks out on stage, barefoot, waves at the family, and after answering questions, starts the song a cappella.
One thing you didn’t pick up on is that English is Angelina’s third language. She is Norwegian, her mother, her father is Swedish, her grandma Mery who introduced her to music is Iranian(Farsi), her husband is Japanese, so Angelina speaks 2 or 3 and parts of a couple more. I have heard her sing in Japanese reading the lyrics, so she is quite multi linguistic.
Great reaction! Angelina's fans really enjoy vocal coaches reactions to her. Not trained in anyway to sing, all I know is what pleases my ears. At sixty eight years old I've been exposed to a lot of music. I've been moved many many times through the years but never have I been moved so deeply (to tears) as I have been by Angelina. I've never heard lyrics so clearly expressed. I've never heard tone as unique as hers. She has the skill of a singer who's been performing in smoke filled clubs for years and it takes me away in thought and emotion. After listening to Angelina everyday for almost two years, from her age of seven to soon to be seventeen, I'm convinced we are witnessing a true prodigy. THERE'S MORE!! so much more. Angelina wrote that arrangement. Queen liked it so much they gave her permission to copyright her arrangement. Angelina adored Amy Winehouse and she waited through a ton of recording contracts until she finally had a meeting with Republic Records, Amy's old label. It was shortly after this show that she got a call from Republic and the talks weren't going well. Just when the execs got ready to leave Angelina's manager, her uncle Michael, pulled out a demo tape of her original song, 'A Million Miles' and played it. The suits turned around and signed Angelina to a Preferred Artist contract.
Angelina also opened for Norah Jones in South Korea when Angelina was 10 yrs.old. Angelina was personally invited to sing for Quincy Jones 85th birthday celebration at the O2 Arena in London. She sang Quincy's arrangement of, 'Fly Me To The Moon' that he wrote for Frank Sinatra. Quincy called Angelina, "the best young vocalist since Michael Jackson".

You cannot listen to a handful of her songs and know how she'll sing. She is 16 now to get an idea of this listen to 4 songs from this year. SUSPICIOUS MINDS by Elvis, MY FUNNY VALENTINE, MOUNT EVEREST by Labyrinth her opening number at the Konsberg Jazz festival and lastly Whitney cover I HAVE NOTHING. She is brilliant at 7 year old audition singing Gloomy Sunday, she was 8 by the final Summertime, but Bang Bang is one of my favourites. Soon after she sang WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKE in a large open air concert with backing singers. So she has recorded almost everything shes has done since she first sung with a mike under the age of 2....so you will never run out of reactions for us angels.

LOL Welcome to the barefoot princess, yo just opened up a rabbit hole to the greatest singer alive. She has over 100 covers that will absolutely blow your mind. She’s a child prodigy. English is not her first language and speaks like four languages. She plays like four instruments. The barefoot princess is also the youngest published author in Norway. No one like her and the more you listen to her the more you will be startled by what she sings for you. Yes, for you. You will believe she is making direct contact with you and when you feel something happening inside you it's your heart trying to tell you it felt the love in her voice and if you begin to tear up or feel the urge to full out cry, don't feel alone. Thousands (millions?) of people all over the world have had the same experience and once she has touched someone's heart she will never leave them.
You may ask, "How come I've never heard of her before!?" She hasn't been officially marketed, yet, to the world and her family wants her to finish her education first and enjoy life as a teenage girl as much as she can before committing herself fulltime to her career.

Just love it when people discover Angelina! Amy and Norah, yes. But you need to go back in time much further - to Ella and Louis, Billie Holiday, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Dinah Washington … ALL the legends, she’ll have sung their iconic songs. Have a look at her playlist (I’m pretty sure somebody will have listed it!), choose whatever takes your fancy, and enjoy this signature voice. I hope she sings, writes and arranges music for many, many years and gives the world true music again.
If I have to suggest only one song, I would go back to when she was 8 and had just won NGT. She sang ‘What a Difference a Day Makes’ on live tv at an outdoor entertainment venue. The most gorgeous singing by an 8 year old I ever heard, she made you feel every word! At 8!

Performed a year after winning Norway's Got Talent (8), Angelina created something that everyone should see at least once in their life. She never repeated this arrangement; something that will be apparent to you after watching this performance. Regardless, this performance will not just blow your mind, it will knock your heads clean off your shoulders.
At 9 years and 2 months old, Angelina arranged and performed a black and white studio cover of this jazz classic; considered by many to be a masterpiece cover. There are 195 versions of the song, performed by such greats as: Nina Simone; Manfred Man; Pete Townshend; John Fogerty; Annie Lennox; and many more. So the question is, how does Angelina Jordan come closer to the original than the other 194 great artists?
She did it by going back to the source; Jay Hawkins himself. Her arrangement of music and lyrics honor Jay's work as close as possible, albeit by being performed by a tiny barefooted 9 year old girl.
You can see her change up her performance on the fly. The notes she scribbles down at the beginning of the video are the lyrics she’s chosen to use, and you can see her referring to during the performance. Angelina, the Barefoot Angel, has 180+ cover, rehearsal, and original videos on RUclips, Republic Records website, IG, TikTok, Facebook, Norway's TV2. She signed a contract with Republic Records on 2020 at 14 years old. According to her family, Republic Records will not introduce her worldwide until she finishes high school.

Not only did Angelina get the golden buzzer from judge Heidi Klum, but she also received huge praise from the remaining members of the legendary Queen. Queen were delighted with Angelina's arrangement and shared it on Twitter with the words "WOW, what a rendition". What was unfortunately not to be seen here, all four judges came on stage to congratulate Angelina (very rarely). Simon said to Angelina "I'm not sure if you know how good you are, seriously" 👣 💯 *AJ* 💯 👣 BTW, Angelina released her version of Bohemian Rhapsody on January 24th, 2020 under her own label ANGELINA JORDAN INC. shortly after Angelina celebrated her 14th birthday. 🤗🤗

Congratulations! You just discovered the best Vocal Artist on the Planet! IMO This opinion is quickly being reinforced as her career is finally starting to I believe explode. I'm surprised there are still many who know nothing about her but again I think that is going to change. If you want to hear music listen to anyone. If you want to feel it listen to Angelina. From left to right Her uncle and manager Michael Astar, her little sister Juliette, her mother Sarah Astar and her grandmother Mery Zamani. Notice her little sister crossing her fingers as the performance starts and later her mother wipe tears from her eyes. Also remember she said she had waited 10 years to sing for Simon. When she was 3 years old she was begging her mother to go on 'that Simon show'. She fulfilled one of her childhood wishes when she sang for the Nobel Peace Prize Concert at 8, her second wish that you soon watch was to sing for that 'Simon Show" that she expressed at 3 yrs old when she sang on America's Got Talent 'The Champions' at 13 yrs old singing the most beautiful rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody ever created! She is 16 as of Jan 10th this year and has just released her second original with Republic Records after being protected to allow her to grow up and when they got a deal that gave her 100 % control over her art. Angelina Jordan ASTAR (the name says it all), this young norwegian genius (here 13 and now 16) is imo the best singer on the planet! I am 69 y old and have never heard a singer like her in my whole life.
Angelina has opened for a Norah Jones concert, and picking up on AW is good. Angelina was raised on jazz from birth on, but also explored other genres, too. She auditioned for Norway's Got Talent at age 7 with Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday." For this AGT Champions performance, she got Heidi Klum's golden buzzer, putting her straight to the finals where she blew us all away with her rendition of Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." 2022, 16 yo, has been a big year for Angelina Jordan, if you want current. I got here late, so the other "angels" have probably given you many more suggestions 💜

Thanks for a great reaction to this awesome musical genius, Angelina. She has a number of originals and almost two hundred covers of some of the last century's greatest voices. You literally can not go wrong with any pick, try "Stay" or perhaps " I'm Still Holding Out For You".
I must say, you two seemed to instantly grasp so much of Angelina and her talents plus the two influences you mentioned were very insightful. Angelina has a few covers of Amy Winehouse and loved her music and she opened for Nora Jones in Korea when she was maybe 10 or eleven. How you identified her roots in jazz so quickly was impressive and although she can sing almost anything and do it with beauty and vocal grace, she started her own musical journey with jazz.
Angelina’s voice and her total being is like an ocean wave or soft summer breeze that takes you in and rushes you to places you have rarely experienced. Your heart rate increases, you find it difficult to catch your breath, chills and shells engulf you. You are now addicted to Angelina Jordan the finest story telling vocalist I have ever experienced.
AJ’s Christmas Show that live-streamed on Dec 23 of 22 had some of the most important musicians of our time: Frank Sinatra's drummer for 6 years, and sun in-law of the late Henry Mancini, Greg Field has won 9 Grammys, and the bass player, Chuck Berghofer who also played for Sinatra for 6 years and toured with Barbara Streisand accompanied AJ on her Christmas Show that aired Dec 23 of 21, and they stated that she had the "storytelling ability of the greats, Streisand, Fitzgerald, Vaughan, including Sinatra, to name a few. The main pianist, a five-time nominated for Grammys, Shelly Berg, stated in all his years working with the greatest vocalist, he had never encountered a talent like AJ. Did I forget to mention Jimmy Z, the famous Sax Player who worked with Rod Steward, Etta James, the Eurythmics, and Doctor Dre, was part of the band for the show? Jimmy stated that AJ was the best he has ever played for. Rob Christie Republic Records Studio Director at Universal Music Group Manhattan Beach, California played the guitar, and was the MC of the show. Rob has been working with AJ from the very 1st day Republic signed her at age 14. (I can't list the complete backgrounds on all the band members because it would take several pages to do them justice.)

Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman.
Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on RUclips. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran.
Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage.

At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes.
Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true.
Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East.
Angelina, at age 6 and 7, did record a few songs in a recording studio at her school, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old.
At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried.
Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience.
In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them.
In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists.
When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”.
Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on RUclips went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old.
In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration.
Angelina’s family took her to United States, Brazil, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Singapore among other corners of Earth, to perform for heads of state and to help raise money for charity. All before Angelina turned 14.
At age 9, Angelina recorded a music video covering the 1956 Jay Hawkin’s classic, “I Put a Spell On You”. The video begins by showing Angelina writing her “wishes” for how she wants to perform the song. Angelina has always created her own arrangements for her cover songs.
At age 10 and just a week before her 11th birthday, Angelina recorded a demo of “I’m Still Holding Out for You”. Her family never pursued having that recording officially released but someone leaked it on a RUclips video. Thankfully, everyone involved with that song is now ok with the leaked version. Many angels (fans) believe this is one of Angelina’s best performances.
When Angelina was 11, she performed a number of concerts in Norway with a jazz/rock band. Those concerts included up to 14 songs, each remarkably performed. Angelina seems to be at her best when on stage, never nervous, only 100% confident.
Also at age 11, Angelina recorded her “It’s Magic” album which has, at times, been in the top 10 best selling jazz albums.
On June 27, 2018, at age 12, Jordan performed “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. She has said that was the high point of her young career which was already in it’s 6th year.
During 2018, Angelina lost her paternal grandfather, her friend Avicii and one of her idols, Aretha Franklin. She did a moving tribute for each.
In 2019, Angelina accepted an invitation to compete in the 2nd season of America’s Got Talent (AGT), The Champions. She had, since age 3, wanted to perform for Simon Cowell and she earned his praise with her genius arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The surviving members of Queen loved it so much they put a link to it on their Twitter. Angelina was eliminated after covering Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. Angelina’s family refused to sign any agreement with AGT.
Angelina, before age 14, had covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres, all of which are available on RUclips. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. The pandemic hit shortly after her performances on AGT and likely caused a change of plans by her family, most notably her Uncle Michael who is her manager. Her family agreed to a contract with Republic Records in August 2020. Republic Records declared Angelina Jordan their highest priority new artist. Reportedly her family requested Republic to allow her as normal a childhood as possible and therefore have yet to fully promote her.
During the pandemic, Angelina was often seen buying meals for the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles.
In November 2020, Angelina released “Million Miles” which she wrote after the passing of her beloved maternal grandfather. She dedicated the song to anyone who has ever lost a loved one.

Wow you guys, great reaction! You clearly know your voice technique, and gave a nice analysis! I think Angelina is the singer's singer. By that I mean that she employs so many different techniques, dynamics and ornaments in her performances that you would need to know a bit about singing to appreciate it. Angelina always does it so tasteful too, never overcooked. As you hear more of her you'll find that she adapts her style to the message and style of each song she does. From the top of my head, she's done Jazz (she's the QUEEN of jazz!), blues, soul, country, folk, RDM, pop, rhytm'n'blues, and even a smidge of rap.

A couple of quick stories. You mentioned Amy Winehouse and Nora Jones (everybody mentions Amy) Angelina opened for Nora Jones at a music festival in South Korea in front of 40,000 people. She had finished her set and the crowd was calling for her, so Nora asked her to go back out. And when she was ten, Angelina performed at a charity concert in New York. A tutor was brought in to keep her up on her school work, and he asked her how she could be so calm with the concert that night. "Aren't you nervous?" She didn't know what he meant. He spent half an hour trying to explain what nervous was. She didn't understand. She literally does not know what nervous is. Angelina has said that she can't wait to get on stage and once she is there, she doesn't want to leave.

I have to listen to Angelina every day & have been addicted to her vocals for the last 4 years. Every aspect of her musicality is amazing. There are many great vocalists out there, but what sets Angelina apart from other amazing singers is her ability to emote the lyrics to make you feel & believe every word she sings. Norwegian born Angelina began singing at the age of one and a half, and by age three was listening to jazz and classics legends on repeat. Her grandmother was her greatest influence, but Angelina chose her own path. Her first studio performance was at age 7, singing I Who Have Nothing. Why does Angelina sing barefoot?

Angelina’s people did not allow the release of the song because they thought it to be the wrong stylistic choice for her. Baby FuzZ never heard Angelina’s demo until years later.
