- We are 500 miles into the all new 2022 Subaru BRZ and we already have COMPLAINTS... kinda
This car is nearly perfect (in my opinion) and it was hard to find and point out the flaws of this car but it does have a few. Of course I am going to fix these issues for myself but I think its important I share these issues because everyone deserves to know the "bad" about a car before purchasing it. So here are some of my personal complaints on the 2022 Brz!
Btw in the video I only stated 9 things but I titled it 10 complaints because the number 9 just doesn't seem right in the title LOL

They place the exhaust tips in like that so that in the event of a rear collision, you don't have to replace the entire exhaust system, which is much more expensive than just a rear bumper.
It's the same reason that Mercedes and other premium brands have "fake" exhaust tips, where the real exhaust doesn't connect to the visible tips built into the bumper.
If anyone is wondering Automatic has an extra cupholder in the middle in front of the other two, good place for phone.
But then you’d have to drive an automatic. 🤢
If anyone was as wondering. Autos are gross.

That ride height issue needs fixing. Looks like hell and I can only imagine how bad it feels.

Been watching since you got your 1st gen brz, been itching to get the gr86.
The rear quarter fin is to help airflow to improve high speed stability.
I personally think the GR86 is generic sports car in styling. Although front grill may not be the best but at least it’s unique in BRZ. Mine is on order the wait is killing me

The “fin” is there because federal regulations require the fender to extend out over the tire so manufacturers add the plastic piece so that it technically meets regulations
It’s a great overall car!! Sporty, rwd and reliable for a good price is hard to come buy especially brand new for a affordable price
Honestly my main gripe with my 2022 GR86 is that theres no pocket area to put my keys/wallet/phone etc. where the AC switches are right in front of the shifter. I have to put things in the either the cup holder, or the door pockets(which causes it to rattle when music is playing at a volume that isnt too loud because its plastic.) It really is a small thing and isnt a huge problem. But other than that I frickin love it. And my previous cars were an AP2 S2000, 05 STI, and 08 STI hatch. My GR86 has less power, but I still have a ton more fun driving it than I did my STI’s.
Should I trade in my ecoboost for it?
That little sharkfin thing over the rear wheel well could be due to DOT regulations. The Audi RS3 has a similar thing in the same place because there is some sort of calculation on how much the wheel has to tuck in from the fender. Adding something like that would help with DOT regulation without having to change the whole style of the car.

tires cannot stick out past wheel wells because debris will kick up. most likely had to stick it on for us regs.
@@harrisongross2107 Toyota did a presentation on the 86 and said it was for high speed stability. I’m not saying it definitely wasn’t for the DOT, but, that’s not the only reason for sure.
That little rear bumper/quarter fin looks fire to me. A decent wheel/tire setup with a little bit of camber lets the bottom half of the tire poke out nice.
Can't get over on how the front looks. But with all this complaint, I guess I'll wait and see if they come up with something different for 2023. Maybe the manufacturer are all taking notes, I hope.
The rear fins are because of federal regulations, the stock fitment sticks out too much. Thats what I would assume at least because thats the case for the Lexus RCF
While I don’t think you’re wrong, Toyota did a presentation on the 86 saying that it’s for high speed stability. So I don’t think that’s the only reason.
Don’t know if anyone has said this but the fin you were referring to on the back of the car is for stability at high speeds. I’m a Toyota shill and they’ve mentioned it a few times in some of their material. So yes it’s functional.
That fin is for legislation by law you must have that to match the width of the side skirts

- The 86/BRZ steering wheel is far nicer than the MK5 Supra.
- Simply unplug the fake noise speaker behind the glove box.
- Intake, header, exhaust and an e85 tube would do wonders for this torquery 2.4L motor.
I’m actually gonna sell my nicely modded 2.0 Supra for more than I paid for it and pickup a new GR86….and mod the shit out of it.

Only 2 things i "hate" for a stock car. 1. The super cheap plastic on the part above the glove box. Should be covered in Alcantara. 2. The new insanely stupid turn signals.... will work out how to retrofit the old ones.
Alcantara is easy to maintain. Just clean with blue coral carpet cleaner, it’s synthetic material and cleans easily. As it ages it will get smooth spots and fuzzy rough spots. The smooth spots you can just use some 120grit sand paper and rough it up. For the fuzzy rough spots, use a basic bic razor (no fancy ones with gel) to shave the fuzz off, which might turn it into a smooth spot which you’ve already learned can be fixed with sand paper. Easy peasy.
I heard on a Japanese RUclips video the reason they put that little fin in the back was to comply with US regulations about tires sticking our further than the body of the vehicle. BTW - I've got 350 miles on my 2022 black BRZ and agree with a lot of the issues you brought up. I disconnected my fake noise and would tell anyone to do it! Trying to squeeze a 4 cylinder boxer engine noise into some cheap, crappy, tinny speaker. Took me about 2 minutes. What also drives me nuts is locking and unlocking the doors. First, the buttons are so small, it's crazy. Second, if you lock the doors and when stopping to get out, grabbing the door handle doesn't automatically unlock the door. Even my 5 year old stripped down pick-up does that. Nope, you have to press the very tiny unlock button to open the door. How stupid. And, no place to put your cell phone. Is the guy who designed the ergonomics of this vehicle 85 years old and still thinks a cell phone is some newfangled invention people shouldn't have. It's nuts just the little things they didn't designed into this car. However, I still love it. It's a free revving little car and a lot of fun but they could have taken it to the next level....
I totally agree with all the points you brought up, it is so funny that they’re over engineered certain points of the car but then it’s the most basic things that they failed to understand😂
Those fins on the rear are functional aero. Has nothing to do with wheel fitment since the entire wheel is well inside the arches regardless of the fin.
Yes that's what I understand. The ND Miata has something similar but it's only a black piece of plastic that sticks out but yes from what I understand it's got to do with how much the wheel sticks out past the body work...
The fins are functional and are said to create downforce for stability at speed. The sound is not artificial, it’s just piped in engine noise. The sound doesn’t resemble the iconic Subaru rumble because it has equal length headers vs UEL headers.
Your car so your choice, but I think the car doesn’t look good lowered. Most don’t.
I'm glad you mentioned the fake engine noises, but I'm shocked you didn't mention the look or sound of the new stereo. Actually, I'm shocked nobody else has mentioned the look of the new stereo. I the only one that feels like it looks like a depth finder or GPS unit from a freaking boat? 😂. Like, that entire stereo setup just looks like an afterthought, and for the first time in the automotive world, I think I've finally found a stereo I dislike MORE than what Mazda has been doing with the ND. The materials definitely feel nicer in the new BRZ, but I personally think the actual design of the interior is ugly. I'm REALLY torn between one of these and the new Miata. I know the BRZ will have the better sounding power plant by a MILE, but the ND just looks so much better and more refined. The Miata specced the way I want is almost $10k more than the BRZ I'd buy though, so that means I could afford to have a new BRZ WITH BOOST for what I'd pay for the Miata I want. So it's now a comparison between a faster, uglier car (BRZ), or the slower, but nicer and more refined car 😔. I just need to hurry up and finish grad school so I can buy both 😂🤣😂🤣.
I put 300 miles on my new WRX in the first 2 days of it man glad you like it so far
From what I heard when a car is designed they have to meet certain width. Now days some cars are designed narrower ( winch we can’t tell the difference ) for better fuel efficiency however doing so the with of the car does not meet government specs so by adding those little peace on the rear panel arch solves that issue.

Seen a white one and just a few days ago, a black one in my town. I prefer the gen 1 styling though. Ether way, love seeing these cars and love owning a 17 86 for almost a year.

That seat issue is present in the first gen BRZ, the only fix other than changing the seat to something with next to no bottom padding, is to actually tear padding out of the basic seats. If you take the seat out, the rails are on the floor, I think Toyobaru did their best with how low it is.
That exhaust sound via speakers is actually a useful option .. if you're a bit into rally

if you take a look at evan shanks' BRZ the rear fins look great when you have a wider wheel setup

(not that winter has been too much so far). pricing.. did you have to pay a premium, styling aside (as that is all intensely subjective) how has driving been? how is it on long highway drive at real NJ highway speed Thanks
Glad to hear an honest view about this car. I’m no Subaru/Toyota fan and don’t know much about this car. Despite that it caught my attention because 2 door coupes/sports cars are disappearing from the automotive world and I decide to look around for what’s still surviving in a world dominated by SUVs and 4 door family sedans and I came across this and the 86. Glad to see you point out what you don’t like about the car would you consider getting the STI parts for it? I’m considering getting either BRZ or GR86.
I live in houston and drove all the way to lincoln nebraska where they had one just yesterday . I ordered mine from a dealer here back in October and I was given an intial day in January and then was told March. So canceled my order and went to good ole nerbraska lmaooo. Absolutely love the car totally worth the 800 miles.

Subaru will turn it off if you ask them at the dealer. It’s even written in the manual.

@@garrettstupperware3754 Yep, even says so in the Owner’s Manual. You just have to take it in and then they can turn it off via their dealer service software. Page 242 in the BRZ manual.

Main thing I hate about the brz is the headlights I feel they could look so much more aggressive and the hood is very round and bubbly looking, the middle console button to pop the cup holders open I hit all the time with my elbow and it annoys me, also the middle consol doesn’t need the cup holders I feel the cup holders on the side door is enough

How’s the rev hang?
Exhaust tips - I think its due to a slightly different exhaust geometry for left hand drive cars than right hand drive. The japan spec (and probably what they designed first) the exhaust is set out more.
Europe spec also has better looking Exhaust tips. I've heard thats due to US regualtions but might be wrong.

1st gen has engine noise pump in from the engine bay.
Think the recessed exhaust tips are due to North American crash regulations or something, as they stick out on U.K models for example.
