They played this on Sci Fi all the time a few years ago in the US. I thought it was the best Sci Fi movie ever made for a while till I saw it on Cinemax or HBO. I love this movie
I found a DVD copy of Dog Soldiers at blockbuster video in 2003... Since that day I've never had to guess what my favorite werewolf flick was. Also found Dead Man's Shoes a few years later at the same spot🤙🏻
Get Dog Soldiers on Blu-ray goo.gl/DY9VHz Dog Soldiers Soundtrack goo.gl/2f80Xg Originally published the 26th October 2014 and had to re-upload due to receiving claims from RUclips's favourite copyright claim abusers 'The Orchard Music Group' and 'INgrooves'.So I had to make some tiny changes to the video.
I enjoyed your review, AS ALWAYS Oliver, but for me personally clearly from a technical perspective, the score is generic AF, the howl film has a bluish haze/filter, witch is used for ages but doesn't compliment the film one bit. It seams directors forgot there are more collors in the color spectrum. Zombie flicks greenish filter. Horror in general bluish filter. War film grayish-brownish filter, a blockbuster orange & blue, it's lazy and anoying. The camera is at times too shaky and way to close and most angles probably do to a small budget are booring and extremly uninspired otherwise an OK film. :)
The upside is that Scream Factory did release the Dog Soldiers Bluray so that sad little bit near the end where only the UK/Australian DVD releases being the best are now kinda rectified...sorta.
Saw this when it premiered on Sci-fi channel in the US, barely 11 years old. Haunted my dreams for years, definitely one of the better werewolf films in ecent decades.
I saw this in the cinema when it was released. By far the best film I saw that year. Such a perfectly balanced blend of horror, humour and homages to other films. It's got to be one of the greatest low budget films of all time. Another quality review Oliver.
Films like this are cool. I remember being in a Blockbuster as a kid (heh, remember those?) and seeing it on a shelf. I was interested, but didn't watch it. When I got a little older, I figured it may have just been a dumb, kinda shitty straight to DVD movie, but later learned I was very wrong after hearing many good things. Watching this review, I see why. It does look good, and those practical effects are awesome. I may have to watch it sometime.
One of the best films iv seen, its not just the story that's captivating, its the actual soldiers and their friendship, the film really grasps the Camaraderie and has good soundtrack's too.
Absolutely brilliant review mate. It's a bona-fide classic this film. Seriously underated aswell. First watched it on a brilliant quality pirate copy and was blown away how good it was. I now own the dvd version on its first release and also have the blueray version you use to review it, better picture quality for sure, but why did they leave out the excellent making of the film, really hope that this gets a true 1080p Full HD bluray realese as it will be an instant buy.
I seem to remember Neil Marshall talking about this movie in his commentary for the Blackwater episode of GoT. Awesome that he and Liam Cunningham got to reunite for the Blackwater episode, and Marshall directed another big battle episode The Watchers on the Wall.
I’m still slightly unnerved from how intelligent the werewolves in this film are; even werewolf Ryan responded to the private’s insults with violence as if he understood every word. It makes you wonder if they’re fully aware of what they’re doing.
At 16:00 Oliver Harper recommends streaming services. Your local library may have copies OR buy a used copy at a flea market. DVDs are c. $1 now and very worth the time & money.
I grew up watching this movie on VHS and very few movies of any genre have come close to the feeling I get when watching this masterpiece. Every time I hear the soundtrack, or watch the movie, it's like seeing an old friend.
I'll always remember Sean Pertwee's, Sergeant Wells getting disembowelled and looking down at his intestines and saying 'sausages, sausages ..' over and over, lol:)
Liam Cunningham is so baby faced! I love Pertwee. I first came across him when he was in The 50 First State. I've met him and seen him at panels at comic con and he's such a lovely funny guy.
Liam Cunningham in this movie is just so far away from the Onion Knight from Game of Thrones in demeanor and appearance that it's oddly bizarre re-watching this film.
Besides the massive influx of information you provide, you are also entertaining and always make me want to watch the movie with your clever editing of film scenes. Without a doubt my favorite RUclipsr!
Oliver I love these retrospective reviews! Would like to see your take on Explorers, if it was something you, like me, loved growing up. Keep up the excellent work
One of the many strengths of this film is the first act. So many horror & action movies suffer from "20 minutes with jerks" syndrome, i.e. you have to spend a bit of time with the characters setting up relationships and a general who's who. In a lot of films, we don't really get strong characters or any reason to care about them. Dog Soldiers has one of the strongest "20 minutes with jerks" openings out there. The characters aren't exactly three-dimensional, but the interplay is enjoyable and each gets a clear identity. Films which do this (Tremors, Predator and Aliens, for example) are excellent for the same reason. On top of this, we have (mostly) good practical effects and a nice tight runtime. The film isn't overreliant on jump-scares, but when they come, they're bloody effective and totally credible. I'd not considered how good the score was before watching this retrospective, but films costing ten times as much could do to take notes (no pun intended). I'll look out for it to buy. Thanks for another excellent retrospective. (Doomsday was so disappointing, though!)
Bloody amazing little gem. Bought it on DVD years ago & watched it in the Cinema too. Everyone shit their fucking PANTS at the flying cow bit lol! We were so fuck'n stoned though so it was extra funny! lol
Interestingly, the producer of this movie, David Allen, is from a town just down the road from me called Siloam Springs. He was mayor around 2010 and had a wolf costume in his office window downtown. Pretty cool.
I loved how quoteable this movie is. "Where's Spoon?" "There is no Spoon!" And "MOVE YOUR FUCKIN' ARSE SOLDIER!!!" "I Love is when posh birds talk dirty!"
April 20, 2019---17 years later and still NO sequel? Bollocks. Thanks for reminding about me about the Special Weapons Division. I like writing stories and sounds like a basis of one. Wonder if a directors cut with all the cut scenes as part of the movie will be released? Thanks for the video.
I saw this on America's sci-fi channel when I was a kid and loved it. I didn't see it again until 2010 when I saw it on video on demand with a friend. He feel in love with the movie a well and he found it on Blu-ray and gave it to my for my 24th birthday. I really wish people would make more films like this. It's a balls to the wall fun action/horror film that you just watch and enjoy and not try to find a deeper meaning to.
This film was shown frequently in the US after its release on the SyFy channel. Anyone with cable and half and interest of the channel would have known about it but perhaps skipped it like I did. I feel like the visual quality of the film never sold me on it. I suspect a few others felt the same. Trainspotting, now that was some quality film production. The film should have been shot in digital. My college had better cameras for loan.
I wish practical effects were still used like this. CGI isn't bad but CGI looks better when you use it to enhance practical effects instead of using it by itself
One of my favorite reviews. I actually bought the scream factory blu ray because of this. Sure, the video quality on the blu ray wasn't great but this review gave me a reason to buy it
The Scream Factory blu ray really annoyed me. Some scenes would look great, others were absolutely awful looking in a way that wasn't there on the original DVD/blu ray release. Some scenes had great detail, others were over-contrasted or way too dark...so annoying. Such a pity they couldn't find a better print of the movie.
I was actually under the impression it was the best print of the film. If not... Crap. I mean, I still enioyed the film, but the prospect is still a tad disheartening.
Who else thinks this one of top 3 werewolf movie ever made. The make-up and special effects are top notch . To bad no part 2 more army V.S. the werewolfs if done right would be a Smash hit
it's a shame there isn't a sequel to this perfect werewolf movie. I would love to see a trilogy, but I guess its not gonna happen anytime soon. I freakin love this movie....
American Werewolf is the gold standard as far as I’m concerned but this is a very good film, most werewolf films are terrible as they rely on bad CG….. but I love this film, absolutely fantastic!!
One of my favorite movies/werewolf movies and is a blast to watch. I remember watching this a lot on the old Scifi channel(now Syfy, seriously what a downgrade in a name) and loving it. I always wanted a sequel, but regardless I will still watch around Halloween.
I think this is a cracking film and it was the first review I ever wrote on IMDB back in 2002. Here's what I thought then; I love films, love being excited or frightened and giving my imagination a full blown work out. I'm patriotic, I love my country but I admit when I heard the concept of Dog Soldiers I thought great idea but what a shame it's not a hollywood film. Being a British film I knew budgets would be tight, special effects minimal and the guns and equipment used would probably date back to almost pre war. How wrong was I, how wondrous was this film. I was excited, I was scared, I laughed and I was thoroughly entertained. Some have complained it's a rip off of Aliens, predator, jaws etc etc. Who cares ! All fiction can probably be traced back to Shakespeare and Co and all films pretty much follow a central core that's prevalent in most genres so lets stop comparing and just take it as it is. A wonderful film. I love that it's played straight. Yes there are subtle winks to other films (Evil Dead, Star Trek II, the Matrix) and displays of black gallows humour that although slightly relieve the tension don't damage the film. Brits are renowned for using humour in this way and it's refreshing to see it accurately portrayed. I like that it's trained soldiers being attacked and thus you don't find yourself shouting at the characters to stop having sex in the backroom, going to collect wood with a knackered torch or generally bemoaning their fate. These guys are trained to survive, they improvise others means of defense and just get on with the business at hand. The fact that they try hard to survive makes you want them to even more. We don't have to suffer hours of exposition and bemused soldiers questioning where they come from and why they want to kill them. They are under attack and they employ commonsense ways to protect themselves. Neil Marshall does wonders with his budget. The uniforms all look real, the guns sound right, we get good explosions and plenty of gore. We don't get to see the werewolves much but with a good script you don't need to. The acting, dialogue and characters are top notch. The sarge and cooper are great but my favourite character has to be Spoon. A tough patriotic lion that just will not give up. The action scenes really are sensational and prove that you don't need millions of dollars and CGI to create a real feeling of danger. It's great how the actors convey the adrenaline and fear combination during the tense action scenes with swearing and anger which to me seems all the more realistic and how one might actually react in that situation. The last scenes in the film with the characters making a furious last stand are fast paced and adrenaline charged to the point of making you want to jump up and punch the air. In all a fabulous film, great script, solid acting and direction and it made me proud to see a Brit director be able to deliver all this with a small budget and not allow the country to become labelled that we are only good at producing romantic comedies, period dramas or east end gangster flicks. I pray this film goes on to become a cult, the features packed DVD in february makes lots of money and Neil Marshall gets the chance to play with an even bigger budget one day.
The credits photo slideshow always spooked me, I’d go the whole film holding my nerve but those black and white photos send me to bed with the jeebies every time. Sad you didn’t mention them, such a small but effective feature. Adore this film.
When I was a youngin this was terrifying. However, I couldn't turn away. I had to keep watching it, probably one of the first horror films that I made myself watch because it was so cool.
The speech Sgt Wells gives about Harry Oswalt still sends chills down my spine.
