when I was 17, my piano teacher told me I wasn't ready to learn this song. so i went home and over my christmas holiday, I taught it to myself. When i went back to her after the break, i told her i had been working on it, and she thought i had just done a little bit of it, but i had the whole thing down. Best moment of my piano career, and now im 21 years old and its still my favorite song to play. I just wish i was still taking lessons so i could get even better
This is my issue with traditional approaches to music study. Whilst structure in learning is undeniably important, restricting what students are and aren't ready for based on perceived level is such a poor approach. Taking on a complex piece will teach you a lot about what you do and don't know.
@@andybarker8787 The issue that comes with that is learning things wrong and developing bad habits. I'm a trumpet player for example, and one thing that comes with learning things on your own despite the teacher's caution, is where players play in a way that sounds fine to them but damages and wears muscle out over time which will destroy their ability to play in the future.

Others just bang this out, hitting every note perfectly. ... But Barenboim seems to understand Beethoven's emotional intent. He varies from initial statemens of very soft musical near-whispers, then transitions to more foreceful, exhuberant passages, after which he returns to the basic statement. His calm cadence is perfect. I never tire of this and go back to it when I'm feeling a little down.

I had someone stupid recently argue with me over how the violin must be more complicated than the piano because the piano keys are clearly defined so the moment you press you are basically pressing a correct note as opposed to the violin. THIS video is what differentiates a good pianist from a lousy one. It’s not about the piano being able to perform a clear note from one hit. It takes IMMENSE command to actually control the pressure of the note. One slight shake and you could either press too hard and that high notes will affect the next one and will sound so horrible. Imagine controlling the pressure of every note (one light and one hard another light and another hard) WHILE playing the left hand that plays something completely different in addition to controlling your feet to back it all up with the pedal. Yeah piano is easy my ass.
I think it's clear the learning curves are different. Violin is perhaps more difficult as a beginner because it's difficult to get a pleasant sound out of the instrument but both are obviously extremely difficult to play well, especially at such a high level.

Of course the entire sonata is a work of art (especially the first 2 movements), personally @4:37-4:45 is my favorite part. I always slow it down a bit when I'm playing and get to that part, sometimes I'll even tear up because of how beautiful it is and how many emotions and memories it evokes. I love Beethoven so much.
How many of us are still around that had the privilege of listening to the wonderful Karl Hess discuss classical music every day on the radio in New York in the 1950s and 1960s? This was his introductory music, and signaled that we were in for another treat.
I've been experiencing some rough times, but wherever and whatever I'm doing, when I stop and listen to this in my mind, it puts everything into perspective again.
Anyone that could compose such a tender melody is of a pure heart that has been broken. Beethoven was a genius, but what I love most about him is the rather transparent nature of his compositions. He was only human, and one can hear exactly that through his works. What a soul! I'd love to have witnessed him play this piece.

Cant control me happiness tears hearing this melody. My soul,,heart and being alligned as god perfection . just a tought
Only after learning to play this piece can I truly appreciate how well he lets the melody come out over everything else happening on the piano. So difficult and so perfectly done.
This is a MASTER of his craft playing Beethoven superbly and beautifully, keeping the music alive. This is absolutely amazing.
2024 anybody?
Me
yes
Here! ❤ And will always be listening it. It's the best!
Working on this piece ... So motivated ❤
Still listening to it (and playing it😊)
How many of us are still around that had the privilege of listening to the wonderful Karl Hess discuss classical music every day on the radio in New York in the 1950s and 1960s? This was his introductory music, and signaled that we were in for another treat.
I meant to say Karl Haas, and his program was called Adventures in Good Music. He was a German-American with an accent and a delightful style.
They were still playing his radio show on WCLV in Cleveland when I was a teenager and young adult. I just loved his show AND this music.
My favorite Beethoven piece
Moves me to tears
Yep.
Just had to come back and play it again to make sure.
Still my favorite of all of the interpretations out there.
One of my favorite pieces. Even when I was a kid, it was one of my favorites.
this is ridiculously amazing ... I'm sure it can't be played any better..
Can really feel the intense heartbreaking melancholia
I've been experiencing some rough times, but wherever and whatever I'm doing, when I stop and listen to this in my mind, it puts everything into perspective again.
Anyone that could compose such a tender melody is of a pure heart that has been broken. Beethoven was a genius, but what I love most about him is the rather transparent nature of his compositions. He was only human, and one can hear exactly that through his works. What a soul! I'd love to have witnessed him play this piece.
Probably my favourite interpretation of this piece. This tempo sounds just right 💆♂
the best piece from the classical era and you cannot change my mind.
*piece
Erin M thanks
My teacher told me he would love to hear me play this piece for the recital so I took his request and I learned to love this piece so much. I hope i can learn the whole thing perfectly or almost perfectly before my recital :)
kokoro ga sakebitagatterunda brought me here =D i love how they merge a song with this. beautiful!
Me too ^^
Took me a while to find this
One of my absolute favorite pieces of music. Please play this for me when it's my time.
This piece resonates with calm acceptance and making peace with yourself and the world
baronffreak, I used this video as a template to send to a pianist for my wedding ceremony a couple of years ago. I absolutely love this movement, and I think that Barenboim did it very good justice. I usually hear it played faster than this tempo but I enjoy the slower tempo much more. Thank you for posting this.
He understood the assignment.
Ohhhhh......so nice. Barenboim has such a beautiful understanding of Beethoven's work and seems to actually be living/channeling the music. His hands move so effortless across the keys and the emotion he conveys is like no other when playing this particular sonata and one of the most gorgeous pieces of all time. Thanks so much for posting this :-) ~Jackie
This dude has a perfect sense of timing, period.
He is holding something precious, absorbed in the miracle of it. So beautiful to witness his care and humility towards such a piece.
He has a bit of that "wise old owl" look :)
Kind of funny
true
My Nan
I think he's probably a hoot
1:23😂
Barenboim is absolutely the very best! And the emotions that this movement evokes... even in the midst of chaos you will always find hope and even joy. By far, my favorite Beethoven masterpiece!
2:18 He Just remembered that he forgot The oven on at home! Then, at 2:20 he thinks: false alarm!haha
i choked
HAHAHAHHA FUNNY
Accurate
It's funny
Beat me to it. Hilarious, well played
Extraordinary. Each note is played with love and attention. The video recording and camera are also splendid.
The way they recorded it is so good 😭 😭😭😭 His emotion while playing it too 😭😭😭😭
Marvelous! Beautifully interpreted. Moving! Powerful! Thank you! The best of what it means to be a Human Being!
favorite piece of my idol Beethoven
thumbs up for this man :D he's soooo great :D
I'm a big fan of his too. I'm an even bigger fan of Schubert. If you spend a few hours listening and looking, you may find out why.
Absolutely amazing. Mr. Barenboim is just magic with the sustain pedal!! Not to much, not too little. Just perfect :)
Beautiful.
This never gets old. I booked marked this performance. Great performance.
Who was the simp who said Beethoven couldn't write good melodies! This is one of the greatest of all time!!
Who said that?
Andrew Morton some people who say that "Beethoven is just like Mozart just with less feeling"
T. Alexander E. Lol tell them to listen to this and then tell me LvB "lacks feeling"!
Bernstein said it.
ridiculous! in fact Elgar wrote a piece based on a conversation he had with a friend about Beethoven's 2nd movements. they're that special...
Happy to make the 500th comment, i love both the piece and Daniel Barenboim, this video is pure gold.
