when I was 17, my piano teacher told me I wasn't ready to learn this song. so i went home and over my christmas holiday, I taught it to myself. When i went back to her after the break, i told her i had been working on it, and she thought i had just done a little bit of it, but i had the whole thing down. Best moment of my piano career, and now im 21 years old and its still my favorite song to play. I just wish i was still taking lessons so i could get even better

This is my issue with traditional approaches to music study. Whilst structure in learning is undeniably important, restricting what students are and aren't ready for based on perceived level is such a poor approach. Taking on a complex piece will teach you a lot about what you do and don't know.

    • @aidanolesen381

@@andybarker8787 The issue that comes with that is learning things wrong and developing bad habits. I'm a trumpet player for example, and one thing that comes with learning things on your own despite the teacher's caution, is where players play in a way that sounds fine to them but damages and wears muscle out over time which will destroy their ability to play in the future.

Others just bang this out, hitting every note perfectly. ... But Barenboim seems to understand Beethoven's emotional intent. He varies from initial statemens of very soft musical near-whispers, then transitions to more foreceful, exhuberant passages, after which he returns to the basic statement. His calm cadence is perfect. I never tire of this and go back to it when I'm feeling a little down.

The emotions that Beethoven evokes in this movement... Sorrow and bittersweet, yet always resolving to that noble, head up, arms back, chest out hopefulness. The world is troubled, yes, but there is always hope. And hope doesn't disappoint.

It can feel like the world is falling apart around us at the moment, and that we are all becoming ever more divided by the day. Music like this reminds me that love, peace and simplicity can always be found even in the darkest of hours. While the world changes and becomes more complex and confusing, these works of art will never go away and we can return to this steady constant to find comfort. We could all do with a little less anger and a little more Beethoven.

Barenboim is the master of interpreting Beethoven's sonatas. You know that he will have considered the way every note is performed and related this to the overall structure. This gives his playing an integrity which can weather criticism of his particular choices - there is always an underlying coherence. Well that is what I pick up from listening to him

I had someone stupid recently argue with me over how the violin must be more complicated than the piano because the piano keys are clearly defined so the moment you press you are basically pressing a correct note as opposed to the violin. THIS video is what differentiates a good pianist from a lousy one. It’s not about the piano being able to perform a clear note from one hit. It takes IMMENSE command to actually control the pressure of the note. One slight shake and you could either press too hard and that high notes will affect the next one and will sound so horrible. Imagine controlling the pressure of every note (one light and one hard another light and another hard) WHILE playing the left hand that plays something completely different in addition to controlling your feet to back it all up with the pedal. Yeah piano is easy my ass.

    • @texanforeverthompson3645

    • @rafthegoat
      @rafthegoat 3 года назад +31

I think it's clear the learning curves are different. Violin is perhaps more difficult as a beginner because it's difficult to get a pleasant sound out of the instrument but both are obviously extremely difficult to play well, especially at such a high level.

It's a beautiful thing that we can share in some of the composer's magic and satisfaction by learning to read what's written on the page. Marvelous performance by this gentleman.

This is just so beautiful! It touches my heart every time I listen to it. The emotion is kind of sad and kind of appreciate... And when the minor comes it just transition normally... And Barenboim performs it as what Beethoven was thinking... He is so into it!

My father played this song often on the Piano, he loved Beethoven.
Whenever i came home, i heard him play piano, jass or classic music, he was a judge but in his heard he was a musician. Thanks to you playing this music- reminds me of childhood days.
Every politician should play Beethoven bevor becomming a politician.

Of course the entire sonata is a work of art (especially the first 2 movements), personally @4:37-4:45 is my favorite part. I always slow it down a bit when I'm playing and get to that part, sometimes I'll even tear up because of how beautiful it is and how many emotions and memories it evokes. I love Beethoven so much.

Anyone that could compose such a tender melody is of a pure heart that has been broken. Beethoven was a genius, but what I love most about him is the rather transparent nature of his compositions. He was only human, and one can hear exactly that through his works. What a soul! I'd love to have witnessed him play this piece.

Beethoven seems to like this theme very much, he used this theme 16 years later as the opening passage of his Adagio in the 9th Symphony, but instead of resolving down he goes up, you will see this piece entirely anew :)

How many of us are still around that had the privilege of listening to the wonderful Karl Hess discuss classical music every day on the radio in New York in the 1950s and 1960s? This was his introductory music, and signaled that we were in for another treat.

When someone understands the music and the composer's intention this clearly, it is more than the original, Mr Barenboim especially in his younger years showed this. Thankfully he put down the baton temporally and played the pianoforte again for us. The piece that shows all the love and feeling I have for my beautiful wife that I can't explain, - he and the composer achieve nirvana.
