Considered Mendelssohn's first masterpiece, the work is admired by the musical community. In four movements, the work begins with an « Allegro moderato ma con fuoco » in sonata form. The second movement « Andante », is a gentle melancholic reverie. The form is similar to a sonata form, the exposition of which presents three different musical ideas. After a development juxtaposing the first and second ideas, the reexposure begins with the occurrence of the third idea, before the return of the first two. The third movement is a very lively and airy « Scherzo », typical of the composer's style. Finally, the fourth movement « Presto » reveals, through its fugal sonata form, Mendelssohn's mastery in the matter of counterpoint. The movement begins with the successive entries of the instruments on a sinuous theme, from bass to treble and increasingly closer together. A second theme follows, played fortissimo by all the instruments at unison. After the development, the recapitulation brings out some reminiscences of the Scherzo. Ernst Wolff, Mendelssohn's biographer, says of him « that it is a choir of angels with tender voices, who evoke the sky in a soft and clear language, where a breath of intimate reverie passes. All earthly sorrows are soothed by divine beauty ». We don't read or write poetry because it's pretty. We read and write poetry because we are part of humanity.
