in today's vid, I'll be covering off how to change the 3 fan belts on your pajero.
This includes the 2 alternator and 1 air con belts.
My belts were purchased via ebay here ebay.to/2EsJ3w4
DAYCO Fan Belt Kit suits Mitsubishi Pajero 4M41T NM NP NS NT NW NX 05/02 on
Kit contains all 3 belts required (2x for Alternator, 1x for Air Con)

Just had my Paj serviced, I was a little upset when the garage changed out my belts without asking, after seeing the squeeze to get in there I happy they did them, lovely to see you ack on the tube.
hey Jim. I think it comes across harder than it is. I must say though, every single bolt or nut on mine just didnt want to let go, making it take longer to complete. still, so long as they didnt charge you an arm and a leg, I'd say it was worth it.
I probably should have stuck it up on the ramps too.

Replaced my squealing, dry cracked NT Pajero drive belts. Job went exactly as you described but my fan nuts weren't over tight. Job done in 1hr15min. Thanks.☺

Just used your tutorial to change my "v" belts. Excellent. That bottom bolt on the alternator was a prick to undo. Also left the fan on and wasn't too much of a hindrance. Thanks

I could not for the life of me loosen the bolt under the alternator. That included a lot of swearing while under the car. Ended up wedging a large torque wrench between the alternator and engine bay wall and forcing it toward the engine block. Got there in the end.

hey Reece, yeah it's a proper PITA . Removing the air box etc I beleive makes it easier to get to but where is the fun in that. glad it helped mate. Just remember to tighten them up again after some driving. They'll start to squeak again if you don't

Not just the adjustment bolt. That 17mm bolt at the back is hard as crap to move if it's frozen. I swear it took me 2 hours, a lot of swearing and a pry bar to get it moving.

You're a Champion and appreciate your Video. When I come to think it is really very hard to shoot an Instructional Video for the simple reason that in order for us to visualize "how" to do it is also a big job for you to stop and film in a different way (many times perhaps) to achieve the correct angle of view for us to " see" as well ha? After watching your video I "feel" I can do it too! Thanks

Excellent video mate, glad I watched this before pulling random things off lol. I got the alternator from the top but I pulled all the air intake pipes and a radiator line off but I have huge hands and needed the room lol
Not hard but shit of a job. Pulling random stuff off is kinda my thing though.

Maaaaattttteeee I had lots of trouble with this belt change and I gave up and took it to KMart Auto who charged me $60 labour to change my belts They said it took two of them to loosen the belts and all bolts in the adjustment as I nearly destroyed two bolts using my breaker bar, Two months later the buggers squealed again so I did the adjustment this time a lot easier with the nuts cracked. I also took off the air box pipes to access the alternator tension from above but I feel your pain Keep on going strong Oh and by the way my radio club has just entered the digital mode on DMR this month and we are loving it All the best
Hey Les, thanks for making me feel better mate. I don't feel so bad for struggling with them bastards now. Mine are ready for a tighten up now. so might try it from the top. Ive got a few hotspots here. cheap jumbo hotspots and theyre great. I do a lot more listening on DMR world wide than I do talking but I do enjoy it. Whilst navigation is different, I find it same same to dstar as the type of people you get on the air. Im just waiting for a radio that updates the contacts on its own
lol, paused at 5 sec to comment, seen many of your vids. My Pagie has had the squeal for a while now, it lasted a good 10K with intemittant noise, today it decided to really play up, constantly. I will probally upload a vid and link to this, mine has cracks galore and car has been through some hard times in past few weeks. so today had to pull over and do the old wd40 trick to get her home. looking forward to see this vid. Thanks for all your shared advice and help.

Just did this, took about an hour. My fan nuts were not locktited, quick hit with a hammer unstuck them. I also changed the idler pulley on the air con belt. Alternator adjuster nut undone with a straight ratchet spanner - it sits directly forward into the fan space to swing. Would be a pain without a ratchet. Belts were badly cracked after 100K Kms. Thanks for the video

can you guys not camp at the moment ? We're all good here. They stopped camping in round 1 but nothing so far for round 2. getting a new Paj and not being able to use it would be right proper shit

Just replaced mine video great help. When removing fan nuts you can hold fan from moving with open end spanner on the cast iron structure behind each nut. Saves using Jimmy bar.

Nice video mate. I couldn’t shift the 17mm under the alternator from underneath. I removed the air intake and cowl as you did, also engine top cover and air hoses off turbo. Very easy. This gave me very good access to alternator for all the adjustments. I did need a big breaker bar for that 17mm but now I had room for it. Sweet.
It was a royal pain in the back side from underneath Doug. Had to get creative to get it. I'll keep you approach in mind for next time.

To have the leverage, I fixed the 17mm socket on a 1/2 inch u joint swivel socket, 2 extenders, and a rachet to get it off in my Triton
I have spent more time trying to get this 17mm than it takes to do the whole job. Pretty damn annoying to be honest.
I've spent two days working on this M17 screw, but he still can't seem to unscrew it, thinking about cutting off the old belt and putting a new one on.

Hey Brett. You can also use a 17mm open end spanner (if i remember correctly) by the fan side as counter for the 12mm.

Great video. If your hands and arms aren't too Ape like you can slacken off the 17mm alternator bolt from the top with a small ratchet or offset ring spanner, and despite fully slackening off everything I still had a hard job getting the new belts on
I'm sure our little Japanese designers do it on purpose some times just for a laugh
Howdy mate, I had a very similar issue when I replaced my timing, A/C & alternator belts on my Courier except had to use a heat gun to get the nuts undone on the fan. Was a real bugger but other than that all went very easy. Recently I had to replace the radiator which was a breeze compared to the belts. Cheers, Adam

Thanks dude. This was a lot of help and from your advice a bought the correct fancy swivel ratchet MacGyver spanners at my local Chana town. Fortunately here in SA we are quite strong so... It seems we don't need the long pipe to make adjustments after all. Perhaps an South African boerseun tightened it, on the previous service 😏

On the interior, on the left side where the passenger seat is. There is quite a large gap. It seems as if there should be something filling that gap. You don't have the same issues by any chance?

Fitted up the full set of bash plates from Boos a couple of weeks ago, pretty happy with them so far but yet to give them a hard time. Not that I'm worried, seeing what yours have copped 😂
Do you have any opinions on ARB air lockers vs the Eaton E-locker? The traction control isn't cutting the mustard for the tracks up here so looking at the next upgrade.
Cheers aat. I think the 3mm will suit most. I'm not sure what you'd have to be doing to need the 4mm ones. Plus I'd prefer the lower weight. I don't have an opinion on the lockets at all. I've only tried the factory one died to the pajero. But if be interested in hearing your experience if you go ahead with it.
Good job. My mechanic manage to change them without removing the fan. At what millage they need to be changed? Mines chopped off while driving.
Not sure what the service book says but mine were well past their used date. I guess it depends on the conditions you drive in. They are rubber based after all. Taking the fan off just gives you more room.
I wonder if replacing the pulley would be a good idea whilst your this far in, not a great deal more cost wise for peace of mind, thanks for the vid, I’ll change mine out soon👍

No mate not that I recall. I think I had to back the pulley right off to get it back on though. More than what was required to get it off in the first place.....I think. It was a while ago

On my NT I had to put a 3'pipe on the spanner to get that rear bolt on the alternator undone. It was ridiculously tight. No fun from under the vehicle.

I bought a NP, so far I have had to replace the starter motor, bugger of a job, and the other day the alternator died at night time. So I replace the alternator and the fan belts should have been change sometime last century. Changing the alternator is a bit more than a one person job, it is awkward to do by one's self so an extra pair of hands would be good.
Regarding the panel mate, Ive run some Alloy strip along the length of mine under my roof cage with Nylock buts and bolts through the panel and strip. Not the way I hoped to set it up but so far its holding well. Not the easiest way to mount it either. Looking at how much of a hassle you have with the belt IM glad I have the 3.5L Petrol lol... 1 belt and all you need to remove is the fan cover.
Sounds similar to what I did with the caravan. I've got some threaded rod now which I'm going to run through both sides of the rack and straight through the panel. I reckon that will keep it on.

I was wondering for my Paj whether the scraping squeal I am getting is also related to the air con tensioner pulley so I decided to buy the belts and the pulley as well. What a pain in the arse. Awesome educational video but I’ve me the single serpentine belt with a tensioning pulley any day.
I think I’ll be letting my mechanic do this one.
The one on my commodore is one large belt. It's alot easier to fit but figuring out the route was challenging 😁 self tensioning pulleys made it easy though.
G'day mate, I'm wondering if you know much about the DPF sensor wiring as my dash warning light continues to flash even after the DPF has been fully cleaned out. So I'm thinking it might be something to do with the wiring connection which is near the gear box on my Pajero & perhaps the reverse sensor is located there also as it seldom work off n on. How loud is you viscous fan?. I think mine may be faulty but hard to diagnose. I never have temp issues except when going up steep hills and even worse when towing up a hill I get close to 100 engine Celsius. Do you have any of the same issues in you paj? I've never had it stop but I usually change gears or slow down.
I wouldn't say noisy at all. I can head the movement of the air more so than the actual fan itself. My trans Temps move more than my engine temps when towing up hill. The engine temp never moves regardless of what I'm doing.

I take it of today, try insufling with air compressor, but the same: 2,05 liter....I considerate you an expert and i abuse of your experience: have you ever had problem with rubber sospension of gear? My gear made noise ( toc toc) if I try push left or right....bat the noise came from the bar( where the gear pose) sorry for my italian english.
Pre-spray all nuts/bolts with WD40 at least hour plus before doing any work, makes a big difference.
That's outstanding advice for someone with more patience than me :)
What size belts did you use for the alternator?

Alan. Jump on the Vic pajero forum and search for workshop manuals. It might take some looking but there was a link there to a pages that had a heap of manuals that could be downloaded to keep. Shout out if you can't find it.

I curious of the fan. Yours can be rotated by han. I tried it in mine and it can’t be rotated. I needed to apply force before I can rotate
welcome , Hard to remember but I dont think it was possible to rotate it by hand any if at all.

Just replaced alternator belts. What an experience. Thanks to this video. There are still intermittent chirping & squeals noise (not too often) when cruising then accelerating. Similar noise 17:10 of your video. Thought it there might be a breaking period. Tension is quite at part to your instructions.

Went on tightening the alternator belts again. It seems the breaking period made it loose. After tightening, back to no chirp or noise whatsoever.
Hoping you have it sorted by now. The viscous coupling on the fan should free spin when cold and lock up with engine temperature. When cruising on hwy the fan should free spin at the speed of the air moving through the radiator. If it has failed/is locked up when cold there will be a differential between the fan and air moving through the radiator and you will feel a vibration and hear a noise. The vibration can damage fan blades and on some vehicles with belt driven water pumps I’ve seen these fail I assume from the vibration. If the weep hole on the water pump is dry (no coolant) at the time of changing out the viscous coupling I would leave it alone.
Managed to change all the belts without loosening that stubborn alternator bolt, just had to loosen the tensioners as much as they can go and was able to squeeze the belt on. Did unfortunately over tighten and break one of the fan bolts however :(

You need to get yourself some bonnet struts off eBay. Was probably the first mod I did when I picked up my pajero

Btw when you removed the intake piece at the start I noticed your “rubber asshole” valve was missing. Sorry, forget the proper name but it’s a valve that lets water out if you ingest but will not let water in from external pressure on the intake tubing. Have a look at the parts diagram on partsouq

take the radiator out first no need to remove the fan lots more room to work in the time it takes to remove the fan you could have done to cars
That would definitely give me more room but I'd have to drain the radiator etc before removing it and I'd also have to remove the bash plates and disconnect all the wiring that runs across the front of the engine bay that's attached. I like the idea of the extra room but there's no way that would have been quicker for my set up.
