A Day In My Life | Living With Congestive Heart Failure

  • I'm going to take you through a slice of Seven's daily life while he lives with congestive heart failure. It hasn't been the crushing, life-altering sentence I thought it would be. Some things have had to be adjusted, and of course he's slowed down a bit (lots of naps!), but he still has quite the active life. He goes for walks at the park every day, is still able to go on travel adventures, and has time to see his friends. I'm ashamed to admit Seven has a better social life than I do at this point. Here's a little glimpse of Seven living his best life despite having heart failure.
    **********
    Hey! Thanks for checking out our video. I'm Jen and the furry little guy with me is Seven. He's getting on in years, so I'm determined to make every day with him count. Join us on our adventures and share in the fun!
    Come say hi! I promise we don't bite!

    My Sassy was on Pimobendan - you are so good with the med syringe. I had to have a washcloth under her chin to prevent messes. Seven is calm and patient. Sassy had two deformed heart valves. She made it almost a year from diagnosis. One morning, one valve completely gave out. She passed gentle and quietly. She was a good girl, a smart girl, and sometimes funny. I have two 12 year old sisters still. Love my seniors!

      Thank you. I'm very lucky that he's always been a calm, go with the flow kind of dog. I had to get the pimobendan compounded because he refused to take the pills.
      I'm so sorry for your Sassy's passing. As awful as it is to lose them, I'm glad she went peacefully, though. Seniors are the best! Love to them!

    we just lost our lovely Chica to congestive heart failure ! We had no symptoms, no coughing or any mobility problem visible ! But tow days ago she had a stroke and fell on her side, took her to the vet and he gave her an injection to try and help remove the liquid from her cavities, but the next day she had blue gums and jaundice and she passed that night.....we are totally heartbroken, she was just 8 years ! Seven looks like he doing fine, your a good pup mum ! Best wishes for you both !

      It's the best news I could've asked for. Hahaha, it's taken four months of practice, but I've got it down to a science. He won't take pills. He always manages to find them and spit them out, so I have to either get liquid medication, or crush his pills and mix them with water.

    I didn't know the Pimobendan and Furosemide could be compounded to liquid. My little one was first prescribed the tiny tabs for Pimobendan but the recent refills are huge tablets and since they can't be given with food I have to open up her mouth and push them in, it's a hassle and poor dog of mine. She takes a cocktail of other meds bc of her epilepsy, collapsed trachea, and arthritis. She still doesn't have CHF but recently had a major dental procedure and has started to cough more, I was warned her procedure could make her heart disease get worse but her periodontal disease was severe and her cardiologist suggested to get them done now and not later as time is crucial. She is still going strong, love her to bits.

    • @coffeeandchijen
      @coffeeandchijen  Год назад +1

      Yep, I know the fight to take those pills all too well. I was having such a hard time getting Seven to swallow them. I reached out to his cardiologist and she told me it could be compounded. It's a bit expensive, but definitely worth it as far as I'm concerned. He's on such a small dosage that one bottle lasts me four months. I don't know where you are, but I get it compounded from Wedgewood Pharmacy in New Jersey. If you're in the states, it might be worth seeing if your vet can place an order through them. I've had nothing but good experiences with them. Best of luck to your sweet girl. It's so hard to watch them age. ❤

    I have a question. My dog died last week from heart failure. He was on benazeprilhydroklorid and pimobendan. Then the vet prescribed only pimobendan but half the dosage of what my dog had been on the last 7 months. After two weeks on the new medication he died. Does it make any sense to lower a dose of heartmedication when there is no side effects present?? He was not close to the upper limit pr kg bodyweigt either. I think the vet caused his death way to soon and made a grave mistake

    • @coffeeandchijen
      @coffeeandchijen  11 месяцев назад +1

      I'm so very sorry for your loss. Honestly, I'm not a vet. I don't know the difference between all the medications and how they work. That being said, no it doesn't make sense to me. I understand your frustration though. Seven had been given a clean bill of health, and then 48 hours later he was back in the ER for fluid in his lungs, and three days later he was gone. I've beat myself up for months thinking maybe the vet missed something in the xrays, maybe they didn't look closely enough.
      His vets adjusted his meds throughout the year and a half from diagnosis. One would go up, one would go down. Two would go up, one would stay stable. I think they made the best decision they could with the info they had at the time. I'd like to think your vet did the same. I wish I could say something to make this easier on you.

  • @CommandoMuerto
    @CommandoMuerto 11 месяцев назад +1

    I'm considering taking my minpin off pimobenan or enlapril, not sure which is the culprit yet. The coughing always starts after the meds.
    I have him on two heart supplements, also added fish oil and hawthorn berry to his food.
    Alot of the coughing follows kibble which swells in their little stomachs. I found a food with low phosphorus.
    I have to question this medicine as his condition has worsened on some days and the waiting one hour to feed him, just seems to cause more stress and misery.

    • @coffeeandchijen
      @coffeeandchijen  11 месяцев назад

      I'd talk to your vet and see what's recommended. Sounds like maybe a reaction to one of the meds? Seven never had any problems with them, so I can't say for sure. I hope you find a solution for your little guy that gives him some relief.

    • @CommandoMuerto
      @CommandoMuerto 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@coffeeandchijen I've clocked his breath count and he is consistently 20 breaths per minute. Also put him on Hawthorn berry supplement, and cleaned up his diet. Minimal kibble because that also seemed to be causing his coughing and water retention.
      I don't have sled dog expectations. My goal is Brüizer having some peace before he goes to Valhalla.

    • @coffeeandchijen
      @coffeeandchijen  11 месяцев назад

      @@coffeeandchijen I love your video. I’m dealing with those things and collapsing trachea, and she can cough for hours til her little body is hard as an armadillo, I have to gently rub on those spasms. The hydrocodone cough medicine is her saving grace, it stops the coughing. I am like you with her, she’s my only baby and roomate and I keep an eye on her all day everyday. Her wish is my command. I’ve taken her to the Vets so much thst we’re up to about 10,000., but I get her inhalers from Canada, so they are only 45, not 350. Here in the US. Many friends tell me she’s old and exhausting me, and to put her to sleep, so I asked the Vet, he said not time yet. You don’t just love an animal until it gets expensive or hard, it’s for life, just like anyone I love. Oh I also got CBD oil for pets, but it just made her sleep 24/7, so I don’t use it. Honey on my finger in between meds and coughing, she really enjoys. That cherry cough medicine is nasty and so sticky. Thank you for your video. I’m so sorry for the loss of your baby, but you took really really good care of him, he was blessed!
