Always great to have a drummer like yourself Bob doing the hard work of having your own jazz band and playing these classic tunes. I have played Caravan so many times, but I try to make it a little different every time I play it. That is what jazz is all about. Keep on swinging with your band Bob!
A great solo in a great song!!! You display a excellent range in dynamics and manage to bring something not seen often enough in a drum solo: a touch of humor. Awesome job!
So glad you notice the dynamics in my playing Greg. This is a big part of my drumming when I do this type of open drum solo. Yes at times I will add a touch of humor, since I`m telling a story when I do these long drum solo`s. When you can feel the audience is with you, I like to add whatever comes to my mind to make it more enjoyable to the people. Thanks so muuch Greg for your comment.

I could never understand why 20" bass drums, were never as popular. Even Ringo, often used 20" Ludwigs, with all the screaming fans in the 60s. These Slingerlands look and sound sensational. They are certainly lighter to carry around.
I really do like the 20 inch size bass drums when I play with a Jazz Quartet. I have some video`s on RUclips of me playing my 20 inch Gretsch Renown Maple Jazz kit which also sound great. With the right tuning, these bass drums can sound big and full and give the punch needed for this type of music I play.
I HAVE ALWAYS USED A TWENTY INCH LUDWIG BASS DRUM, EXCEPT FOR A FIBES 20" INCH BASS IN THE 70S. MY FIRST set WAS A ROUND BADGE GRETCH. MY DAD GAVE IT TO ME WHEN I WAS A 12., IT HAD A 2o" BASS TOO.I THINK A 2O" BASS SOUNDS GOOD, IF TUNED RIGHT.
Long live Slingerland! Too bad they had to go out of business. The 2 best sets I've ever had. I'm really waiting to see what all DW will do with them now that they've bought out Slingerland.

Hey Ken , I haven't been commenting on much for the past several months, but again just watching this as I have so many times makes me have to say what an amazing drummer. I try to learn whatever I can from WATCHING you play. I like the fact that you are very good at supporting each of the soloists. And your solo of course DOESN'T need any support. I would like to ask you a couple questions when you get a little time. Thanks for the motivation. Btw....I got your DRUMSTICKS. They are great.
I`m still learning how to play and love trying out new idea`s that I have. For me it`s always about the music first. As a band leader,I choose all the songs that we play and even think of new arrangements like on Caravan and how to play the song. Ask anything you want Frank. Thanks so much for your comment.
Listen to the metre, Ken’s right on it,keeping time with the high hats, very clever, also he has a impeccable metronome built into his brain..andy (aust)...he drives the band, very creative and musical...
These Slingerland jazz drums are well over 50 years old now. It gives me that big open warm sound that I want in a set of drums to play the type of jazz music that I do with my Jazz Quartet. Thanks Jim for your comment.
Fantastic soloing, and I love the way you propel the band ! Great technique, and best of all, brilliantly MUSICAL. I’m sure that I’ve asked this before, Ken, but do you teach ? I previously studied with Joe Morello back in the late 90s, and would love to continue my drum education.
As a band leader,I always want to hire the best musicians who will play my arrangements of these classic jazz songs. They make me play better and so important to have the right feel for this music. Well you studied with one of the best drummers of all time in Joe Morello. I have used his Master Studies book which he wrote that is about the development of control and technique.I learned my finger control technique from Joe Morello. Of course I do teach and I`m always happy to help out drummers who came out to my jobs and ask whatever questions they might have. Thanks so much for your comment U2WB.
I always enjoy so much playing on these classic 1968 Slingerland Modern jazz drum set.It has the right sound for the music I play. Thanks for your comment.
Ken. You are a fucking amazing drummer Excuse my language :) I love rock but you blow away even drummers like Bonham and Peart Very impressed. As a drummer myself I must admit I could not play Caravan Not a chance
I just play to the style of music I`m doing Tony. I have my own jazz bands, both small and big and I hire musicians who can do the arrangements I want to do. Since these are my arrangements, I get to play what I feel and what will make the music sound the best. When it`s time for my solo,I just play what I`m thinking at that moment. As long as the people enjoy my bands and playing, then I know what I`m expressing is working. So do your own thing Tony and have fun playing.
I`m using a 70`s A Zildjian Medium Ride. I like a clear sounding ride with little wash to them. I can dig into this ride and also get a great bell sound on it that cuts very clearly. Thanks Jeff for your comment.
Just got this video in my feed. Great sound. As a mediocre drummer, with a good ear for sound from many years of playing sax in high school and Army band I always disect sounds from instruments, particularly drum kit pieces. Although it may not fit in with your music, if you can, try a Sabian 16" AAXplosion. The bell on it is awesome.
I like to put in some humor at times doing these open type of solo during my concert. Yes I have seen that video of Charly Antolini doing Caravan. He is an excellent drummer for sure. He is now 85 years old now and still playing. Thanks for your comment.
Very melodic and inspiring solo Mr Loomer! You have a very elegant style, in the tradition of Mr Bellson. When you get down really soft, to get that really nice bounce of the sticks, is it all fingers, or are you squeezing the fulcrum and using the middle finger to get that bounce?
I have used both ways of this style to play very soft. When I want a very low volume fast single stroke roll,I will use all fingers in the Joe Morello style. When I need more power and sound,I use mostly all wrist to get the job done. So I like to use a bunch of different techniques to do whatever I`m thinking about when I do this type of drum solo. For me,the hardest thing to do is to play very soft, and keep the flow going. Thanks so much for your comment.
Where did you get the info about the Buddy Rich Drum Company? They only made drums in the year 2007, and then the company folded. I have a Buddy Rich Drum Company 5.5x14 inch snare drum with all maple shell with radio king lugs on them I bought back in 2007. You are correct Marc that I`m using a 14x20 inch bass drum. Both heads are Remo Smooth White Emperor with only a two inch felt srip on the back head.Front head has a medium tension and back head I tension the head so it will not have any wrinkles to it,so it`s a low tension. This gives me that big open warm sound which I like so much .

Thanks for your comment.
@@KenLoomer Yours is one of the most enjoyable, and musical, solos I've ever seen. A class act sir. Cheers. Thanks for the reply.
Nice playing by all, great sound, excellent stick work.
Another great solo!
I just love playing on my small classic 1968 Slingerland drums. It has the perfect sound for my technique that projects so well. Thanks Jeff for your comment.
Woderfull!!!!! Realy woderfull!!! Y love your drums.
I`m playing on my classic 1968 Slingerland jazz drums. The way Slingerland made these drum shells with the 3 ply maple, poplar, maple and solid maple re-enforcing rings gave me a warm open tone that projected so well. Thanks for your comment.
Superb drummer !!
I have to thank my excellent musicians for always giving me what I want in these type of songs that I arrange. Caravan one of the great standards for a jazz drummer to play. Thanks Mike for your comment.
Very creative, Great Drum Sound, the whole band ROCKED Caravan!
My most requested song with my Jazz Quartet is Caravan.Always great working with these musicians who inspire me to play at my highest level. Thanks for your comment.
Drummers fantastic. Ken Loomer!
just watched Gene Krupa bio and the Caravan show.. amazing.. You played quite well at this show..tasty fills..
I`m only as good as the musicians I`m working with. I enjoy so much playing with these excellent musicians and they always inspire me to play at my best. Thanks Liam for your comment.
ReaL good stuff. Love his technics
I always get inspired to play when I have these great musicians swinging so great on this classic song Caravan. Thanks for your comment David.
Damn man.....that's some serious drum playing.
I`m playing with some serious musicains who inspire me to play at a higher level. Thanks for your comment Robert.
Excellent..!!!
👏👏👏👏
I must thank my excellent musicians for the great playing they did in Caravan. Thanks Marcelo for your comment.
Loved it Ken, and I really liked the piano in the intro too. All of the solos were great! I always smile when my jazz band calls this tune. I really enjoy playing it.
Wow that was really great.
Great drumming! Love it!
Playing with these outstanding musicians in my band always inspire me to play at a higher level. Thanks Jeff for your comment.
Great sound on the smaller size kit with a great tecknic , excellent with such control . Lets hope Slingerland makes a come back soon with DW Drums .
These Slingerland smaller size drums has that great sound because of the way they made their drum shell. It has the 3ply maple, poplar, maple with solid maple rings on them. With my wide open tuning with the Remo Ambassador heads ,it gives me a clear full tone out of these drums. I`m sure DW will do a good job of remaking the Slingerland brand. Thanks Albert for your comment.
Buddy, Gene, Papa Jo, Bellson and Morrello ALL in one!!!!!! You are amazing Ken. Oh yeah, your ride cymbal sounds incredible.
All great drummers who I learned so much from.Great that you know about these master drummers who always made the music sound so much better because of their playing. In this video I used my 20 inch 1971 Zildjian ping ride which you can hear every beat that I play on it. Thanks so much Kevin for your comment.
The band sounds great, and the drumming is very articulate and clear..great sounding kit and cymbals, Well done!
Playing with these excellent musicians always inspire me to play at a higher level. I always try to pick the best musicians when I form one of my jazz bands and just let them know the arrangement I want to do on a certain song. Playing on these classic Slingerland jazz drums has the right open sound for me. Thanks so much for your comment Paul.
Paul Rivet very awesome
cool...great solo & top notch kit....nice musical solo Ken.
These are my 1968 Slingerland jazz drum set with the 20 inch bass drum. Has a huge open sound for a small kit. Thanks Guy for your comment.
Thanks for that masterclass. I learn a lot watching you. Greets from México.
I do the same thing all the time learning from other drummers and always wanted to improve my playing.Glad you enjoyed this video and learned a few things that I did. Thanks for your comment.
As always Ken...great job. Nice chops, enjoy your post. Continued blessings and all good things.
When I get to play with these excellent musicians,I always play at a higher level.Plus I love playing on my classic Slingerland drums. They have the right sound for my type of drumming. Thanks so much Alan for your comment.

As you can tell, I love playing my classic drums with these outstanding musicians. Thanks Bobby for your comment.
My goodness me Ken that was fantastic! All the musicians were great including yourself what a wonderful inspiring drum so that was. God bless you my friend.
As a band leader,I always get the best musicians who can play the arrangements I write for my Quartet.Plus they inspire me to play at a higher level. Thanks Gareth for your comment.
Just love this!!
Believe me Robert, these great jazz musicians inspired me to play at my best. I was really into playing Caravan that night. Thanks for your comment.
Outstanding......
For some reason, playing on these classic Slingerland Jazz kit always brings out the best in me. Thanks for your comment Robert.
I’ve watched a lot of drum solos but wow never seen someone that fast actually
I`m really not that fast. I just want to be relaxed when I play and having every beat I play be clean and heard clearly. Like always, I want my solo to be exciting and dynamic for the people I play for at my concerts. Thanks Allen for your comment.
Great stuff Ken, keep the dream alive.
Doing what I can to keep this style of drumming alive today. Most important is to make sure this great music is being heard today. Thanks to these wonderful muicians, I am keeping the dream alive with my jazz quartet and Big Band. Thanks for your comment John.
"Bravo" Brother Ken, you are one of the best drummers I have ever heard, you remind me of my late brother-law Byron Taylor, and unlike so many so-called drummers that lack true talent with the need to have 20 drums, you give true meaning to the old saying" The lest you play the more you're heard, Keep up the good work!!!!!!!
For my style of playing,I don`t need a lot of drums. I just know how to get so many sounds out of one drum. The music I play inspires me to play all out and I`m always thinking of new ways to play. Thanks Samson for your comment.
You're Welcome Ken!
Cool solo, great technique
This guy can play!!
EXCELENTE BATERISTA!!!😄 EN MARAVILLOSA MELODÍA QUE LE DA EL TOQUE DE LO SUFRIDA QUE ES UNA CARAVANA!!!👏 SALUDOS CORDIALES DESDE MONTERREY MÉXICO!!👏 BENDICIONES 😄
It`s all about the music first for me. I must thank my excellent musicians for playing so well the arrangement I did of Caravan. When it`s time for me to do my drum solo, I want it to be exciting and telling a story. Thanks Juan for your comment.
Awesome drum solo!
Playing on these vintage Slingerland drums is always so much fun for me. Thanks for your comment Giuseppe.
I love it. your drumming makes me smile no matter how I'm feeling.
Your best work yet Ken!!!!! Great attack on the kit!! So very yummy!! Wow.....................!
As I get older, I feel I`m putting everything together now and playing at a much higher level with new idea`s all the time. Glad you notice this and thanks so much Matthew for your comment.
Really good sounding sticking
Great first name you have for sure! Very important for me to have sound sticking as you say. I want my solo to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concert. Thanks Ken for your comment.
MY DAD GAVE IT TO ME WHEN I WAS A 12., IT HAD A 2o" BASS TOO.I THINK A 2O" BASS SOUNDS GOOD, IF TUNED RIGHT.
someone here likes buddy very much rsrsrs, great stuff
Long live Slingerland! Too bad they had to go out of business. The 2 best sets I've ever had. I'm really waiting to see what all DW will do with them now that they've bought out Slingerland.
I have played on these small Slingerland Jazz kit for over 50 years now. It`s still the best sounding drums I have ever played. All about how the shells were made back then. It has the 3 ply maple, poplar, maple with the rock maple rings on them. We shall see what DW will do with this famous Slingerland brand which was a huge part of drum history. Thanks Bill for your comment.
great solo. 👍👍
Playing on these vintage Slingerland drums brings out the best in me. I love the wide open sounds these drums have. Thanks Alan for your comment.

Great playing Ken.
I always enjoy playing on these classic 1968 Slingerland drums. Plus my musicians in the band made Caravan so exciting to hear. Thanks so much for your comment.
impressive technique
Is that an akatsuki cloud?
YOU PLAY RIGHT UP THERE WITH THE "BIG" DRUMMERS. ONE FABULOUS DRUMMER YOU DID NOT MENTION IS CHARLEY ANTOLINI. HE STILL PLAYS AT THE AGE OF 83 WITH GREAT STRENGTH, PRESSION AND JOY. YOU CAN TELL HE STILL ENJOYS PLAYING HIS DRUMS. KEEP PLAYING YOUR DRUMS AND PERHAPS, LIKE CHARLY, YOU WILL BE PLAYING AT THE AGE OF 83! SYLVIA! 5/23/21

Thanks to RUclips,I got to see and hear the great drummer Charly Antolini who is from Zurich Switzerland. My great joy is being a band leader of a jazz quartet and Big Band and doing these type of concerts.Music keeps me young so I hope to keep on playing.I`m 67 now so no plans to stop playing my drums and I will keep on swinging with my bands. Thanks so much for your comment.
@@KenLoomer I envy your seeing Charly play drums. How wonderful that you have a jazz band and are still playing. You're a young man, so you will have many years to entertain people like me who really love Jazz. Blessings, SYLVIA! 5/26/21
Nicely played!
I was inspired that night because of the wonderful musicians who made this arrangement I did come to life. I was really feeling the music and when it was my turn to solo, I just expressed myself at a higher level. Thanks Maximo for your comment.
Ken!!!! You are damn good!!! Why is this the first time I've heard of you??? Great stuff and wonderful sounding Slingerlands!!!
So glad you found me Randy and enjoy my drumming and band. The good news is I have over 900 video`s of my Ken Loomer Big Band,Jazz Quartet and Trio you can check out. As you might know, jazz musicians are very rarely heard on TV anymore. When was the last time you ever saw a jazz band on any of the late night shows today! Even the huge name jazz artist today never get on these shows. But at least I have RUclips to put on my video`s of my bands. Thanks so much Randy for your comment.
great playing . kit is on the money
Not too many of these 1968 Slingerland Jazz kits left. They have the right sound for the type of drumming I like to do. Thanks for your comment Bruce.
KenLoomer you sound great Ken
That was fun! - Jeff
Always fun for me to play with these great jazz musicians who inspire me to play at my best. Glad you enjoyed this performance.
Great job, Ken!
I always get inspired to play when I`m working with these excellent jazz musicians. Plus I was using my classic Slingerland jazz kit that night. Thanks for you comment Chris.

Killer snare, in particular.

It was cool for me to play with these great musicians.I got inspired to really play my drum solo on Caravan for this concert that I did. Thanks Alexander for your comment.
Beautiful Ken! I also love the way the drums sounded! Just perfect!
These classic 1968 Slingerland drums has the right open sound for me when I play with my jazz quartet. I always get inspired to play with these excellent musicians. Thanks Rita for your comment.
Wow!
Rite on.
Nice!
Listen to the metre, Ken’s right on it,keeping time with the high hats, very clever, also he has a impeccable metronome built into his brain..andy (aust)...he drives the band, very creative and musical...
Nice sounding drums!
These Slingerland jazz drums are well over 50 years old now. It gives me that big open warm sound that I want in a set of drums to play the type of jazz music that I do with my Jazz Quartet. Thanks Jim for your comment.
Потрясающе !!!
I was playing with some "Awesome" musicians. Thanks Yuri for your comment.
Nice:)
Nice drumming
I always enjoy so much playing on these classic 1968 Slingerland Modern jazz drum set.It has the right sound for the music I play. Thanks for your comment.
👏 👏 👏 👏
So do your own thing Tony and have fun playing.
very good
Always great playing with these outstanding jazz musicians. Thanks for enjoying this video.
AWWW YEAH!
I always love playing this classic jazz song.Glad you enjoyed it Paul.
Another great video, Ken! The drums sound perfect. What are you using for a ride cymbal? Thanks again for the inspiration !
I`m using a 70`s A Zildjian Medium Ride. I like a clear sounding ride with little wash to them. I can dig into this ride and also get a great bell sound on it that cuts very clearly. Thanks Jeff for your comment.
+KenLoomer It sounds great! I've got to find one that's exactly what I'm looking for. It seems I can't find that perfect ride! Lol
@@willbar1961I just saw that this post is from 3 years ago. I've since found a couple Sabian rides that now I'm getting compliments on! Thanks.
9:10 Awesome and a sense of humor! Ken, have you seen this version on RUclips with Charly Antolini?
"Caravan" (Antolini Bern, Switzerland 1993)
PLAYING SOFT AND KEEPING TNE FLOW GOING IS SIGN OF A EXPERIENCED AND FINE DRUMMER.
Hello Ken. The Buddy Rich Drum Company is promoting a pair of sticks, along with their drums. Have you tried the sticks?
Where did you get the info about the Buddy Rich Drum Company? They only made drums in the year 2007, and then the company folded. I have a Buddy Rich Drum Company 5.5x14 inch snare drum with all maple shell with radio king lugs on them I bought back in 2007. I Google what you said about the drum sticks and all that came up is the Vic Firth BR model sticks. Show me the link about what you are saying. Thanks
wow gent,s BRAVI
HELL YEA
I always enjoy playing on my 1968 Slingerland Jazz Drum Set.Plus always great working with these outstanding musicians in my band. Thanks for your comment William.
You sound great Ken. Can I ask you if you worked out of any particular drum books and which ones helped you the most. Thanks.
The drum book that helped me out the most is"Advanced Techniques For The Modern Drummer" by Jim Chapin. One of the most famous drum books for coordinated independence. The other drum book I studied to be able to sight read good is "Modern Reading Text " by Louie Bellson. Thanks Philip for your comment.
Mr. Ken...wow, is that a 14x20 kick drum? If so, please tell us the head combination and if use felt strips and tensioning. Sounds amazing!!

Is that a setomatic tom holder, or something else, Ken.
That is a Slingerland Set-O-Matic tom holder on my 1968 Slingerland jazz kit. The best single tom holder ever made!
Great solo Ken! Is that a Coated emperor on the bass drum batter side?
I use Smooth White Emperor on both sides for my bass drums. Then only a 2 inch felt strip on the back side head. Thanks for your comment Pawel.
Its got that great vintage thunderous sound :)
What does Emperor give you that Ambassadors wont?
