Shadow of the Colossus 2005-2018 (PS2 vs PS3 vs PS4) Comparison

  • In this video I compare the original Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2 with the PS3 Remaster from 2011 and the PS4 Remake from 2018. The graphics are much better in the remake, but the controls are still a bit choppy. Since comparing the games on different platforms cost me a lot of time, I would be grateful for a Like.

    The PS2 version is lower resolution/fps, but it still has the best aesthetics. They progressively removed the washed out/high dynamic range lighting in favor of detail but lost the iconic watercolor look. They also smoothed out Wander's animations but lost the feeling that jumping around on rocks should be a little awkward and jarring. (Death Stranding got this very right.) What’s up with remakes removing glow and washed out lighting? It makes it seem like you’re traveling through a fog, or a dream, and adds a nice aesthetic, the new graphics look very pretty, but it takes out a certain fantasy aesthetic present in the other versions

    • @pizzaparker7424
      @pizzaparker7424 Год назад +1

      I 100% agree. It seems to be a trend in remasters and remakes. Make it more realistic, more detailed, but less artistic? I don't get it. We want to see more of what the game has to offer, but that doesn't mean we want to lose the feeling we had before. The draw distance has been improved, but the lack of bloom effect makes the visual look simplistic. The sense of scale is better in the ps2 too somehow.

    While I gotta admit the remake looks great, I still prefer the low rez look of the PS2 original. • @deathbyslipknot

    The PS4 version looks great and all, but the world feels less lonely and desolate due to the focus on realism. Everything is bright and colorful and pretty whereas the PS2 and PS3 versions went for more of a decayed, dreary, barren vibe with the art style. However, the PS3 version had problems with the FPS change affecting Wander's response to colossi shaking, resulting in so much unnecessary shaking and flailing. So I'll say the PS3 version is the definitive version in terms of visuals, but the PS4 version is the definitive version in terms of gameplay.

    • @LongSinceDead1
      @LongSinceDead1 6 лет назад +14

      See, I've seen people mention that in regards to the PS3 version: that the higher framerate causes an increase in the shaking of the Colossi, but I never experienced this. I recently played through all three versions of the game to see if I could notice any significant increase in the amount of flailing, and while it did occur slightly more often in the PS3 version, it was never enough of an issue, at least no more than it is in any other version. It occurs in the others as well, and there can be scenarios where Wander is thrown around continuously, trapping the player in a loop, but I believe this is due to complex collision meshes being weird, and it crops up on occasion regardless of version. Still, while it can be momentarily annoying, I never found it to be all that prevalent or detrimental to the game.

    • @deathbyslipknot
      @deathbyslipknot 6 лет назад +24

      I find it extremely detrimental in the 15th colossus. He's broken in the PS3 version. Overall the game is still very playable but the 15th colossus shakes endlessly in the PS3 version and it's near impossible to get even a small stab off on him. I dread that battle every time I play the PS3 version. The 3rd colossus's stomach is also a pretty buggy area in the PS3 version for shaking and flailing. Most of the game is still fine, but I've played every version extensively and the PS3 is where I notice the most unnecessary shaking. The PS4 version doesn't have this at all.

    • @LongSinceDead1
      @LongSinceDead1 6 лет назад +13

      Actually, that's a good point. While I didn't actually have that many issues with the 15th colossus during my recent playthrough of the PS3 version, I do remember loathing it in the past for being incredibly wily. I do respect the PS4 version for fixing that, but ultimately I think, in spite of it's occasional issues, that the PS3 version is probably the closest to the definitive version.

      Butchered the artstyle of the original. I don't know what it is about it but Last Guardian truly looks like what a team ico game should look like while the SOTC remake just looks like a very generic game in comparison. It's a shame because Bluepoint is probably the best of all time at making remasters to games but their remakes so far have been extremely underwhelming. Maybe they should stick to remaking american games because they can't help but westernize the highly stylized, more imaginative Japanese titles that they get. Actually I would love to see an Uncharted 1/2/3 remake made by them.

    • @deathfrombelow1193

      @@benvids I highly, highly disagree. Most remakes of video game look, sound and feel amazing, and in a good remake the same atmosphere and style of the original is kept (see resident evil 1 remake, link's awakening, black mesa and the list goes on) It's not impossible to take the original SOTC and just improve on it in every possible way, in fact two generations and more than a decade later it would be hard to fuck something like that up, and to be quite frank I think bluepoint fucked up with this remake.

    • @Pan_Z
      @Pan_Z 3 года назад +4

      Bluepoint are talented when it comes to the technical side of video games. Their artistic changes always seem to leave something to be desired. That mystical, wistful feeling you get from the original artstyle is mitigated in the PS4 version.

    • @milkman1649
      @milkman1649 3 года назад +3

      @@deathfrombelow1193 I agree. The greatest shame is that the remake overshadows the original in popularity. The creators of the original gave the game life with its visual art. It reeks vision and creativity. The remake devs were like “let’s just add basic bitch graphical features that can run on a Nvidia gpu and sell it to the new generation”. They preserved nothing of the artistic imagery from the original. The only thing they nailed were its animations. It’s very arrogant of the devs to think that they could top a masterpiece with their little inclusions (Some devs did something similar to left 4 dead 2 recently but not near the same extent). Now, the forbidden lands look rather less hostile and unknown but more gay by adding shit like green grass (saturated color schemes) and decorative rocks. Also, I don’t think the game was “westernized” but “consumerized”. Just another sad example of modernism ruining things in media.

    Agora entendi,PS3 é o Remasterizado,a mudança da plataforma PS2 para PS3 apenas.E no PS4 eles não apenas mudaram mas adicionaram mais vegetações,texturas e infinidades.Sendo totalmente um novo jogo!Vou ter comprar um PS4 e deixar meu PS2 descansando um pouco...Ótimo vídeo,e sem dúvida.

      The PS3 version doesn't look like it changes the graphics any just takes advantage of the more powerful hardware so you have higher resolution, longer draw distance, etc. but the textures and models look unchanged from the original.

    I wonder why the PS4 version couldn't have some additional graphics options to make it look more like the original. It has filters but none of them give the desired affect. So many modern games give advanced graphics options. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to have the option for increased fog, more faithful lighting, and slightly de-saturated colors. GTAV let's you do similar things in the director's mode. I think the new visuals are beautiful (and prefer aspects of them) but I would have loved the option to try out things that would make it look closer to the original and it doesn't seem like something that would be that hard for the developers to implement.

    There's no question the PS4 remake is a technical marvel, but I can see why some people don't like it as much. In the original the desaturated landscape impressed by the overbearing sun lent the forbidden land a mystical, near other-worldly feeling. In the PS4 remake, Bluepoint kept the washed out colours. What's not shown in this video is much of the forbidden land is now a dulled, hazy yellow or chilling blue depending on where you are. Personally I think Bluepoint did a decent but not perfect job.

      you have a big problem with typology I see. If the game has nothing changed on it except the graphics is a remaster, so if this game has no new collosus for example or added more easter egss is not a remake just because it has better graphics and audio. looks trash? so with your logic ps1 graphics are the same with a ps4 but a ps2 with ps4 is a massive difference.

    • @OnTheSpaceShip
      @OnTheSpaceShip 6 лет назад +5

      the scarecrow No. This game is a remake because it was made on completely new graphics engine. Remaster means better resolution and frame rate, nothing more.

    • @scarecrow2097
      @scarecrow2097 6 лет назад

      I see, I thought it had to do with gameplay differences.But still saying that remaking or remastering a game from ps1 to ps4 is somehow trash compare to a ps2 to ps4 is redicioulous, in fact to my eyes this is the only game with a graphical difference from ps2 unlike resident evil 4 for example which looks more like a money grabbing to me when you compare the difference between the original and the ps4 version.

    Damn... when compared to the PS2 version it loses a lot of that mystical otherworldliness the original had as far as art direction goes. The overly bright, and bloomed out art created an ephemeral and godly aura to the entire experience. Like you should NOT be there. The PS4 version sterilizes that effect.

    (I’ve never played the game before, but watching Jacksepticeye gush about it so much in his ps4 remake playthrough, saying that it’s his favorite game ever made, and hear him compare the new version to the old one, I just had to see for myself how it actually looked originally, and I am not disappointed whatsoever!)

  • @LostJak

    PS4 looks absolutely stunning, the only thing I didn't like is how they took some of the excessive light away from the original game (which was present in PS3), probably to give it a more realistic look, and also made Wander running animation less clumsy.
    I think the excess of light and the clumsiness of Wander are contained in the artistic part of the game and help to make the poetry in it (IMO the excess of light representing divine powers ruling the land and the whole dangerous "game" Wander plays with it in his journey, and his clumsiness showing that he's no prepared and trained warrior, but just a boy doing whatever he can to get the girl he loves back to life). They also could've kept Wander's original face instead of the babyface look.
    Apart from that, the game looks awesome as always, and even more. Now I wish I had a PS4 to play it again.

    The PS4 version receives unwarranted criticism of the lighting effects. All of the detail would be lost if they kept the washed out blooming effect. The color palette is much the same, so it still conveys the same feeling as the original. People saying it's "colorful" but it's not really. It's just realistic. I think the original just used the bloom so much to cover up the fact that you can't see very far due to hardware limitations. Just like how old games used fog in the distance so you couldn't see the pop-in.

    I prefer the PS3 ver. in some aspects, one of them is that it takes the color palette from the original game and make it cleaner and better. And in the other hand PS4 has a way more focus in realism (like almost every game nowadays) and lost the style of the original game. Im not saying PS2/PS3 vers are better in terms of graphics But they still use and mantein the style thats make us say "That's Shadow of the Colossus" instead of aiming to a more realistic graphics.

      To be honest, I didn't mind the PS4 version's look, and I've played the PS2/PS3 version. It's hard to recreate something that came to be because of the PS2's limitations, and Bluepoint is aware of how important this game is, so I'm sure they did their best to be faithful while making it for contemporary audiences too.

      the thing that gets me isnt the realistic new look it is the fact they made colossus so brightly colored instead their original murky coloring. that murky coloring made them seem more intimidating and made you think they were other worldly. which since they are the 16 parts of a demon like character composed of black ectoplasm that is what they should of went for in this remake but it just looks like that the went for graphics. although it is a very pretty game.

    I wish all the PS3 HD remasters were better. Some like Jak Trilogy, God of War Collection, and Ratchet and Clank are mostly fine or even excellent. But then we got shit like Shadow of the Colossus with broken gameplay caused by the increased framerate that never got patched. It's also missing a bunch of visual effects that aren't properly replaced by the new ones. And several effects that were ported over don't look right as they scale badly with resolution. The gameplay and art are basically ruined by this and using software mode on a PS2 emulator plays and looks far better because of it. Get the PS2 version or skip over it and go right for the PS4 version.
