Matter of fact it happened to me just a couple of days ago when I found some really nice pewter pieces and earlier that day I found a beautiful wooden colonial pedestal fruit bowl that I just love They look so nice together with my ironstone. I'll bet that young fellow thought your bowl was redware. Yes, it says red because the clay is brick red as it is dug from the ground, but fired and glazed it can turn brown.

You can boil water with coffee grinds in it once starts to boil take off stove and set the ironstone piece in it. But remember it will only stain if there is crazing

I always soak mine in hot coffee water. As long as it has crazing, it should stain.
