My suggestion is adding a new feature to the Storm Sorcerer subclass that allows you to convert any spell damage into thunder or lightning damage a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and when you do so, you can add your sorcerer level to the damage.
For example, if you cast Fireball and used this feature, it would deal thunder or lightning damage instead of fire damage. You would also add your sorcerer level to the damage 3 times (assuming proficiency bonus of +3 when you get the feature).
This would give Storm Sorcerers more flexibility to use a wider variety of spells while still maintaining the storm theme. You wouldn't be limited to only using lightning and thunder spells, but could still add that elemental flavor to your other spells.
Hmm how about rather than get bonus spells you can use transmute spell metamagic you can spend 0 sorcery points proficiency per long rest so you can convert damaging sorcerer spells int thunder or lightning. That way regardless of what attacking spell you get, you can change it to thunder or lightning. My only problem here is if the player gets something like eldritch blast so maybe only restrict it to sorcerer spells only.
Also you get the cantrips gust and shocking grasp for free.
The best fix I can think of is adding origin spells that give it thunder and lightening damage spells. While Witchbolt is a bad spell, it could be buffed with some class features to be ok.
If you want to improve Witchbolt
Make it a bonus action to deal the damage so you have your full action each turn, increase the damage from 1d10 to 2d8 and if the target succeeds on the saving throw, they take half damage. This prevents the spell from being completely negated on a successful save
@@kongoaurius You are missing my point. I agree that Witch Bolt is a bad spell that needs fixing, but it is a better spell for a Storm Sorcerer, who doesn't have it on their spell list, than it is for anyone else save perhaps Tempest Cleric.
That is just an example that the biggest fix is just an expanded spell list for the subclass. I really like the idea of a ranged shocking grasp, or even booming blade as free cantrips. Booming Blade is a better on a storm sorcerer than for just about anyone else.
As for the Witch Bolt fix, just switching to BA for damage and allowing it to scale with level would be enough for me. It would actually prefer a Con save vs the restrained condition instead of more damage.
The fixes are a nice improvement but I personally think that all sorcerers don't need an expanded spell list it makes choosing wizard feel pointless in my opinion but that's just how I feel
No I get that. This one is tough to go without one though unfortunately because it relies on a type of damage that it gets limited access to
While I agree not all Sorcerer subclasses need expanded spell lists, Storm Sorcerer certainly do.
@@brettmajeske3525 honestly that's a fair argument for the storm Sorcerer subclass specifically
Yeah I specifically did not add one for Draconic Bloodline but this one has to have it
