That game turned on the Vikes when instead of taking a 20-7 lead into halftime, they ran an ill conceived play that the Falcons turned into a TD . If Minny goes into the locker room after dominating the first half , the game would've turned out very similar to this Jags game .
Randall Cunningham, Ill always love him as an Eagle but damn, when he went to the Vikings and came in for Brad johnson in 1998 he was just Unstoppable!
I was at this game with my late grandfather, it went from a tight low scoring game to 50 points in a really short period of time. Vikings clinched home field in the playoffs with this win...
Honestly it’s hard for me to watch anything that has to do with the 98 season I’m still looking for my heart till this day cause it got ripped out I cried so hard that year
My Favorite Player of all time is Cris Carter so I was BEYOND hurt for him! It felt SO fkn Stupid and unfair that the Falcons led by Bummy Ass Chris Chandler won that game! Especially when the clock ticked zero I knew full heartedly and unequivocally that the Falcons stood NO chance of beating the Broncos. But if the Vikings would have made it to that Super Bowl I’m almost 100% certain John Elway would have ended his career with only ONE Ring 💍
Been a Vikings fan for 20 years I forgot we was putting up 50 points on teams that year r really best opportunity the Vikings have had too win a superbowl
The difference was the Vikings literally blew out every team they played that year and were blowing out the Falcons in the NFC Championship game and decided to play a more conservative offense in the second half of that game. Major mistake by Dennis Green. The 1998 Vikings Defense wasn't that good. It's just the offense put up such ridiculous numbers. That other teams had to play much more loose. Which the Vikings defense took full advantage of. O
I was at this game, home from college, but I have to admit, I didn't remember that it was so close for most of it. Thank you for uploading these games - they've been a great walk down memory lane
I was at this game. It was insane in the Dome. The only reason Jacksonville scored at all was two sympathy pass interference calls. And Jacksonville was good that season. I think they win their division.
I had the over in this game. I believe it was 50 points. I had little hope at halftime. But WOW what a second half. Hitchcock's pick-6 got me close enough to think it may happen. Then the rest of the 4th quarter got my $$$ with room to spare. What a game.
I wanted so bad for the Vikings to make it to the SB and face the Broncos. That would've been one of the most star studded and potentially entertaining SB's of all-time. There's no question the 98 Vikings were the best team I've ever seen that didn't get to the SB. That 98 NFC title game still feels like some sort of bad dream smh lol
Fondest memories from watching this game live as a teenager 1. My favorite of Moss's TD's that year off the flea flicker 2. Vikes scored 38 straight points in the second half -- amazing.
I remember that game. I thought Jacksonville was gonna be a fight that night with Fred Taylor but Minny was too much for them. Very dominant performance. Skol

Nothing could get in the way of their path towards greatness except Gary Anderson's leg which hadn't missed a single kick all season. In fact he made history. How unfortunate. I truly believe they would've been beaten Denver. Minnesota had : Randall Cunningham Robert Smith Randy Moss Cris Carter Jake Reed Randall McDaniel Todd Steussie John Randle
This vikings team was playing madden on rookie mode lol they was so dominant offensively and they would score quick and they did it in a time where the nfl didn’t favor the offense

He was actually really good that year for the Falcons too
I had the over in this game. It looked dead with 5 minutes left in the first half. It still looked bad late 3rd quarter. But wow it covered and then some, thanks to Jimmy Hitchcock.
Cunningham also had a fractured bone in his left hand, and had his knee drained by by the team surgeon. At this point he was pretty nicked up, and it was a rather smart move by Coach Green to take him out of the game.
Does anybody out there have any 1998 Vikings preseason footage or games? I have never seen a single preseason game from that year as they were very difficult to see outside of that market back then. Did Randy Moss get a TD wearing purple #18?
I can't say I've looked too hard for it, but I've never come across it. Earliest years where I've seen clips from preseason would be mid 2000s. I know they went 4-0 in '98. It would be cool to see, but I'm more concerned with acquiring the rest of the regular season games that I'm missing from those years first. Randy did wear 18 during the preseason. Not sure if he scored though. I'm sure looking up a newspaper article would say. Here's a pic from a week 3 game: media.gettyimages.com/photos/aug-1998-wide-receiver-randy-moss-of-the-minnesota-vikings-in-action-picture-id338414?s=2048x2048
Yep! They did not lose a game of any kind until week 9. Cool pic, don't think I've ever seen that particular one. I have a few rookie cards with him in #18 but I think I have even seen one where he wore #88 (Vikings not Marshall). Which makes me curious if he switched numbers twice.
I have the last seven games between the two teams. 2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015, Wildcard, and 2018. Sadly nothing older than that. If you want to discuss trading, email me at funkydunkleman@gmail.com

@@mmbs3191 the missed field goal for the win shouldn't have been necessary. And, if it's the season I'm thinking of, losing to the Giants 41-0 in the NFC championship game was also a big sign that he couldn't perform under real pressure.
There was poor clock management in the 98 championship game as well. People always remember the kick but just before half we had over a minute left on the clock with the highest scoring offense at our disposal and what do we do? Kneel and run it out.
