Thank you for this review of my old work place “Palmers” Gentleman hair stylist” originally owned by by Joe Palmer who sold it to Colin Tucker the manager who then sold it to Terry Edson who worked there until he retired. The lady’s hair stylist next door was also a chiropodist a man called Cyril he also owned Suson’s when I worked at Palmers the news agent was managed by a man call “Fred” I remember the tropical fish shop and if I was last for work I used to take a short cut through Bond Road school as it had an entry from both ends and I lived in Laings Avenue. I left Mitcham in 1971 and moved to King’s Lynn.
It is apparent from the most recent street view compared to your photo taken in 1980 how much Monarch Parade is deteriorated. Monarch Parade now looks hideous. It also shows the appreciable demographic change that has taken place over time much to the detriment of the original population of Mitcham and London as a whole.
Many comments here about the changes of population in Mitcham. My father took us from Mitcham to Morden near the North Cheam border in 1962. We then left Morden for Co. Durham in 1968. He could see the demographic changes coming. I did visit relatives in Mitcham in the very early 70's but alas the place has changed and all family have since departed on a much greater journey!

I have fond memories of Mitcham when it was English. Sad to the change!

Now this is filled with terrible people.
Sadly, I think you're right. Totally unrecognisable and full of incomers now.
